Ultrabeat - programming drums

I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out ultrabeat lately, but i've hit a brick wall when it comes to programming. The manual appears to offer no help. I've no problems creating a drum sequence which will constantly repeat the same four bars or maximum 32 steps, but what if I want to vary this sequence by, for example inserting a cymbal crash every 12 bars or so? I know I can stick it in manually in the midi-editor, but is there no way of automating this? Another (related) problem is that when I drag a pattern over to a track and loop it, only the first cycle of the loop appears in the midi-editor - the rest is greyed out in the track view. One way round this is to do lots of copying and pasting of the first cycle to create a live drum track throughout the song in the midi editor which I can actually edit - but it seems incredibly labour intensive and there must be a quicker way. Any suggestions most gratefully received.

This tutorial might help, particularly if you plan using on UB extensively There are some preview clips here too:

In the Arrange window -> Region menu -> Convert to Real Copies.
This would enable you to DnD different patterns from Ultrabeat to, say, bars 1, 16, 32. then loop each one (which would stop before the next DnD'd region) - convert to real copies. Now all your regions are individually editable.
Edit: Bee Bee beat me to it!

  • Ultrabeat:  Swapping drum sounds causes samples to get lost

    Hello,
According to the Logic Studio Instruments and Effects manual on page 558, you should be able to swap drum sounds in ultrabeat by dragging and dropping one onto another. However, when I do this, both the source and destination cells have no sample loaded anymore. I also tried to swap via menu and clipboard copy, but got the same result.
Is this a known bug? Has anyone else seen this? I'm using Logic Pro 8.01 on a G5.

Yes. This is a problem. Also, when you create a new ultrabeat with your own samples and take the time to name them in ultrbeat's piano roll, the next time you open it up in a new project the names are gone. Both of these are major bugs. I have reported this to Apple and seen no results yet.

  • Question about programming drums with a midi controller and EZDRUMMER

I have ToonTracks EZdrummer. I am trying to do this. I have a beat I want to put over these guitar tracks but it's too difficult to play all at once. What I wanna do is be able to lay down a steady crash cymbol over and over again till the end of the guitar phrase. After that I want to add in the kick drum and snare, toms etc...How can I do this? I tried just recording over the crashes on the same track with the rest of the beat and it gets all messed up and causes Logic to freak out. How can I do this so that I can record one track of the crash then on another track the kick, snare and/or toms?

There's several different ways to do this, but here's what I do:
I have EZD set up as multichannel, with EZD itself on Instr. 1, plus its 7 AUXs.
I start recording on 1, and play the first part (say your cymbal crashes)
I press Control-Return. This creates a new track underneath Instr. 1 with EZD. Logic record-enables this track
I record part 2, say, the kick.
    Control-Return
Then the third part, and so on.
I can then go into any of the individual regions to correct any mistakes, change parameters etc.
Finally, with the first track selected I select the regions and Merge ("=") and all regions are now merged on the original EZD track. I delete the added tracks, and I'm done.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best Drum program for logic???

HI need help..which is the better drum program.for a non drummer..Idrum..ezdrummer..or bfd?...what i intend on using it for is for making my own beats..i need to know if these r loop sampled software or can i make my own beats...thank u..any and all information on these items is great apprecated!!!

Ok, there;s two factors here. Drum sounds, and programming environment.
In my view, you already have Logic, which offers a superb drum programming environment from the start. I have a screenset with the hyper editor, event editor, event float and various other bits on there, and I can do very sophisticated drum programming/editing there.
Now, if you want a simpler approach to programming drums, more "drum machiney", then you want to use a grid-type approach. Here, you can either use Logic's matrix or hyper editors, or you can use the step sequencer within Ultrabeat, using acoustic drum sounds. You can do as sophisticated feel-type stuff here (you won't be convincing anyone you're using a real drummer!) but it's easier to work with patterns - you can always drag them to the arrange and work on them some more using Logic's more sophisticated tools.
So - drum sounds. There are quite a lot of freebie good acoustic drum multisamples on the net - look out for NS Kit, the GSCW kit and the Bulldawg kits in particular.
So, you can do all you want, without spending money at all.
If you absolutely do want to get a new toy, then you mostly have a choice between drum "instruments", that have great sounds, but expect you to be playing/programming them with your host, and so don't really offer programming facilties (DKFHS, BFD, Stylus type things), or the more "virtual drum machine" type things like iDrum, Guru, Battery etc.
Without knowing your working preferences, or exactly what you want, it's difficult to make a recommendation, but I would say you should start of with the tools you already have in Logic Pro, because you might find they suit you pefectly.
Sometimes buying a new toy does make life easier, but often it's just an excuse (if I buy this, I'll be able to finally make the super-dope beats I have difficult doing now).
Buying new stuff doesn't bypass the need to develop your musical skills (I wish that it did!
As a coda, I'll just mention that Stylus RMX rocks hard, with the acoustic expanders and new Orleans benefit library.
The EXS24 and a few drum sample libraries, and freebie net samples and a bit of work will give you much of what DKFHS & BFD give you, albeit in not as convenient a package. I loved the first DKFH, haven't heard the new ones, but I liked the character of their samples.
I heard the first version of BFD and I thought it was fairly bland in character, it didn't immediately appeal to me, although they have a ton of addons for it now, so I'm sure there's stuff in there I'd think were superb - it certainly has a good reputation.
But none of those, despite sounding potentially great, will give you drummer like beats if you don't know how to play/program drummer like beats (or you take the existing patterns/loops that some of those instrument contain and use/edit those), so I'd hate for you to be dissapointed.
Did I say that Stylus RMX rocks hard? Good.

  • Using general midi loops in ultrabeat

I want to keep it SIMPLE. I don't want to hassle with programming drum sequences.
This is what I want to do, take GENERAL MIDI loops from actual live drum performances into Logic Express 8, use them to trigger hi resolution acoustic drum samples in Ultrabeat to create natural, REAL sounding drum tracks at 24 bit/96 resolution. Here is an example of the type of 3rd party midi loops I would like to use:
    http://www.smartloops.com/products/mididrumloops/mididrumloops1.html
Is this possible and easy to do in Logic Express 8/ultrabeat and how do I do this?

I looked at one of the Logic Pro books, and it said to transpose by using the transpose function in the inspector, but that only lets you transpose by octaves!
Put the mouse pointer on top of the transpose number, which is zero, hold down the left mouse button and drag up or down to transpose by steps. At the beginning of either the getting started or Logic manual there's an explanation of the different types of mouse/key behavior, if you're not used to using Logic it's a good idea to go over these.
Also, Logic does not always use simplified Mac conventions (thank the stars for that), as a result you have a lot more variety of data input, it varies according to the task at hand.

  • More about drums. . .

Inspired by WarriorAnt's thread about programming drums (since drums are one of the most difficult things to properly capture in the recording process. . . you know . .. mic'ing, gates, ridiculous compression, the likes) does anyone know of any GB compatible full range drum programming software? In the next issue of garage band I think it would make a good bit of sense to include some kind of drum machine/creator with some of the excellent sample sounds that are already included with GB. A lot of GB doubters have been really impressed with the sound quality of many of the drum loops. . . it would be great to port that sound quality into some kind of drum sequence creator. Thanks. . .

As far as a program which can generate interesting, varied drum parts on the fly, I'm a big fan of Steinberg's Groove Agent product, which costs US$300, and which was originally called "Drums for Dummies" according to its creator and project manager, Sven Bornemark.
    http://bornemark.se/ga/
Crank it up and as your sequencer plays back, you just show it where the fills should go, and you can rachet up or down the complexity level of the beats according to the section of the song. For somebody like me who really doesn't understand how a drummer thinks or how to program a drum machine (hey, I'm just a singer!), it gets the job done.
Groove Agent covers all the drum-based musical styles you are likely to encounter in United States or European music, from acoustic-style jazz up through and including the various flavors of hip-hop, techno and electronica.
There are two other products with a similar philosophy: Latigo, which covers Latin and Afro-Cuban music; and Darbuka, which covers Arabic music.

I have not tried these last two products myself.

  • What is the best way to use single shot drum sounds?

I have a huge collection of wav. format single sound drum sounds that I use in FL Studio. What is the best way to program drums in GB using them besides buying iDrum? I like the flexibility of using drums from different kits when I make my music so I kind of get board using a preset drum kit from GB even layering 3-4 kits isn't as nice as choosing each individual drum sound.

Would be great to have more info but on a 24fps timeline with 24fps footage, you can simply right click and change the speed/duration to whatever. It'll be more jittery than smooth 60fps slow-mo. If your footage is shot at 60fps and you are editing on a 24fps timeline, just select the clip and right-click and choose MODIFY>Interpret footage and change the fps to 23.976 and you're done. Now when you drop that clip on the timeline it's in smooth slow-mo. Or, you can just toss the original clip on the timeline and change the speed/duration setting to 40%. Pretty much the same thing although the former is better if you need to add any warp stabilization to the clip. Anything you want to speed back up you can either duplicate the clip in the project panel and change it back to the original frame rate OR you can simply adjust it on the timeline to 250% speed which is back to normal. Good luck!

  • Who uses exs24 for drums?

hi, ive always been aware of drum programming via exs24.....but never fully understood in depth..... how its done.....
who uses exs24 for drums?? can you explain how you use it?
ive loaded up a bunch of hits....across a zone.....
but those parameters on the front of the exs24..... change the sound of the whole instrument, right?
but say if you wanna change the sound of one kick drum? with the exs24.....
would you have to devote the whole channel/exs24 to the ONE kick sound???
or can you independently tweak each drum sound on each zone/key?
im sorry, but how do i send a drum sound from exs24 to its own channel in logic mixer?
im used to NI battery but havnt got it for the mac yet.... should i take the time out and use and learn exs24 for my drum programming?
    cheers

    thanks
was that recorded from a live drummer, or you programme the drums in the piano roll/matrix editor?
so when you use the exs24 for drums....you just programme in the piano roll? or record live MIDI.....
This obviously depends from personal experience...
I know drummers that play directly to EXS24 (or other sampler) by using MIDI trigger pads... (such as Roland Pad drums)
I know professional drummer that make session over the web for work
I'm a Piano player and i prefer to use my keyboard or... depends.. if I need to add juas a Crash Cynbals on the down beat I can also use to add direct in the piano roll and copy the same over the song
everything depends from the target that you want reach...
programming drums via midi is not much different tha other instruments parts
every professional musician has his personal business secrets, obtained with the experience of his work.
so you have one drum sound per exs24 in a single stero track?
Yes, single tracks of single stereo samples in the 80% of cases...
I also use various Samples that I select by myself during the working in progress...
I can only suggest you to search in the Thousands of Akai samples Library (or Roland, EMU, Kurzwiel)
and of course in the NI generation such as EWQL Stormdrum and spectrasonics...
in almost cases the samples are the same.. but if you have milion of Sample you can reach to find your personal sound setting!
Obviously.. there is a faster way... just use EZ-drummer, Battery, BFD etc.

  • Help with Ultrabeat in Logic Pro 8

A couple of things I want to learn/be able to do in Ultrabeat
Customizing drum kits - what I mean by this is, I want to be able to freely pick desired drum sounds from the multitude of logic libraries, mixing and matching them in the ultrabeat sampler. Like say taking a kick drum from one kit and a snap from another, and building up my own custom kit in the process.
Assigning specific drum sounds in ultrabeat to desired midi controller pads - say assigning a kick drum to a pad on my midi controller and a snare to another, etc (this would actually be useful for just sounds in general).... I have a axiom 25.

Each voice in ultrabeat can hold a sample in OSC1. Drag a sample or audio file into the sample area.
Or use the import button to choose a preset Kit. Then click the arrow next to import and click on a sound in the list to audition it. Then drag it onto the voice (on the left assignment area) you want.

  • Using ReDrum In Logic 8??

Hi, I'm very new to both Logic and Reason but the main problem I am having at the moment is getting my drum tracks created in reason over to my logic tracks.
The first way that I tried, which was successful but time consuming, was to open logic and reason independently of each other, create the drum patterns i needed then export them one at a time (eg. Bass Drum, Snare etc.) then import them as wav files into logic to place on my timeline, as you can see this is time consuming, not to mention space consuming.
The next step I tired using ReWire was to set up an aux channel so I could hear the drums playing in logic, then lay out my patterns in reason. This is where I've become stuck, I now need a way of transferring those drums into logic.
Ideally the way i would like to do it is to have individual channels in logic set up for each re drum sound (bass drum, snare etc.) but still be able to lay my drum patterns out in reasons page initially as i find the process of drawing in the patterns in reason very quick and efficient, but in the long run i want to have all my drums in logic and be able to use logics effects on each drum sound.
I'd appreciate any help people could give me as I'm quite stuck and haven't been able to find anything online as of yet
Thanks So Much for reading, much appreciated
    Thom

I think i understand your problem. Although you can assign rewire inputs to aux strips, you can't record to them directly. you need to send each aux strip that you want to record to an audio channel. then you may record.
    step by step:
    1. open logic
    2. open reason
    3. in reason, cable the individual channels directly from redrum to the hardware device, starting with 3/4 (dont use 1/2)
    4. In logic, create new aux strips for each of the individual redrum instruments, and change the input from 1-2 to the appropriate reason rw selection. MAKE SURE YOU NAME YOUR STRIPS AT THIS POINT- it makes the next step less confusing.
    5. Set the output of each of the aux strips to a separate BUS. (this creates a new, superfluous aux strip every time- so try not to get confused with all the clutter-that's why it's best to name the originals as stated above)
    5. Now create new audio tracks in the arrange window for each aux strip that you configured earlier, and change each strips' input to the corresponding BUS from your rewire aux strips.
You are done. Now when you record, each instrument channel from your redrum will record to it's own audio track in logic. Sounds complicated- but after you do it a few times it makes sense, to a degree :P
I understand Redrum is very straightforward and fast, but i would seriously consider learning to use Ultrabeat or Battery for your drum sequencing. The problem with the above method is that if you decide to change your beats, or replace a kickdrum, you will have to re-record from redrum all over again, as the rewire record process has left you with only audio files. Ultrabeat has a very easy to use pattern sequencer built in, and it's far more powerful than Redrum. Battery is a whole 'nother beast, but either plugin will allow you to program drums directly in logic, which is a huge workflow improvement.

  • Mod Wheel not changing Articulation ID

I'm using the Samson Carbon 61 keyboard controller to program drums with Drum Kit Designer. The decice is working correctly. But when using the GM + Mod Wheel for Hi Hat control, the Mod Wheel doesn't make any changes in the Articulation ID parameter. I already checked and the Mod Wheel is sending the corresponding CC#1 (Modulation) messages to the software correctly. Does anyone know how to solve this?

    Hi
    The Art Of Sound wrote:
Normally it must send such messages on Channel 10... not Channel 1 which is the default for most Keyboards. (Logic reads all Chans usually)
    <snip>
If I am incorrect, maybe Edgar might step in with further advice...
    Not Edgar, but...
DrumKit Designer uses Articulation ID's to control the HiHat Open/Closed amount. Switching to GM+ does indeed work the Open/Closed amount here on F#1, G#1 and A#1 notes with the Mod Wheel. It works regardless of MIDI transmission channel and regardless of the Instrument track MIDI Channel.
You may note that playing say an F#1 with the Mod Wheel on Max will give you an open Hat sound, but moving the ModWheel back to zero will not give you a "pedal closing" hat sound. You have to play the note again.
If the controller device is correctly sending MIDI CC1, the OP may want to switch DKD for the EXS24 after loading the desired kit and setting the GM+ in DKD. You could then open up the EXS Editor Groups pane and watch check that they are being selected as you play a note repeatedly whilst moving the Mod Whl.

  • Missing features Logic X

In addition to the chord track that has been eliminated, another feature that seems to be missing is the ability to grab data between nodes in the midi draw feature. You can do it in automation and it was available in Logic 9 but in Logic X we seem to have lost the ability to do that. Why???
Also, if you had selected and were viewing several tracks in the piano roll or score editor you use to be able to drill down into a specific track by doubling clicking a note from that track and then going back out if you double clicked on the background. I can't seem to make that happen anymore. I used that a lot when programming drums or strings. I've looked for it in preferences and can't seem to find it.

  • It clips no matter what I do!

Just recently when I have opened up projects new and old I have noticed that suddenly quite a few tracks are clipping very badly all the way to 6.0 constantly. They definitely were not doing this before. An ultrabeat kick drum channel is just always on 6.0 over no matter what I do, if I turn all the plug-ins off and even put its fader down to 0 it still clips all the way to 6.0 even though I can't hear it! What is going on?
There must be something I have done to suddenly make all my projects say they are clipping.

    Hi,
the meter is Pre-Fader. Pulling down the fader won't do anything to the meter of the track, but can only change the amount that is sent to the mains.
So to reduce db's, you have to reduce the input loudness, which can be done in every software instrument, plugin or whatever you like.
If you don't want to pull your volume down, simply insert a limiter or a compressor with limiter circuit activated, set gain to zero and pull down the autogain to minus 4 or so.
But normally, you would decrease the volume of the software instrument in question.

  • Tempo question, please help!

Though this may seem like a silly question to many of you pro's out there, I've stuck with Garageband 1 for quite some time, as until recently it has worked without issue.
I'm programming drums in for my bands music, and there are many tempo changes in the songs. Unfortunately, Garageband 1 does not seem to allow me to have more than one tempo for a single song! If there is any way, any way at all I can splice tempo's, even if it means creating a new project, setting the tempo higher/lower, and converting it into a real instrument or loop (if that's even possible), please let me know!
I'm desperate to figure out a solution to this dilemma. If I can splice tempo's in later versions of Garageband, again, please let me know!
    Any help is much appreciated.

Okay you should have it then.
In Edit (Waveform) view) hit Effects then select Time and Pitch.  On the T&P menu select "Stretch and Pitch (Process)" which should be the bottom option.
There you should see one of these two screens depending which algorithm is selected.  If Audition is selected, you'll see:
Tick the menu option I've arrowed.
Or, in the Izotope algorithm (my recommendation), it'll be similar.with the menu option, phrased slightly differently but in the same place.
