Umount drives mounted with autofs

Is it possible to allow users to call "umount" on drives that were mounted with autofs?  I have the following rules:
cdrom -fstype=iso9660,ro,users,nodev,nosuid :/dev/cdrom
floppy -fstype=auto,async,users,nodev,nosuid,umask=000 :/dev/fl
usb -fstype=auto,async,users,nodev,nosuid,umask=000 :/dev/sdb1
I am under the impression that if I mount with option "users", then users can umount the drives.  However, that option does not actually seem to be used.  Any ideas on how I can allow my users to umount these drives?

Nope.  From `man mount':
users:  Allow  every user to mount and unmount the file system.  This option implies the options noexec, nosuid, and nodev (unless overridden by subsequent options, as in the option line users, exec, dev, suid).
Only the user that mounted a filesystem can unmount it again.  If any user should be able to unmount, then use users instead of user in the fstab line.  The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the user must be the owner of the  special  file. This may be useful e.g. for /dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device.  The group option is similar, with the restriction that the user must be member of the group of the special file.

  • I am unable to get two external LaCie drives to mount.  I switched computer desks and everything was disconnected for a few days.  My 2T g drive mounted with no trouble.  What can I do to mount the two LaCie drives?  One is a 4T, the other is 1T.

After disconnected all the computer peripherals and trading computer desks, today I can't get the two LaCie external drives to mount.  They were working yesterday, but not without problems.  The 1T is hooked up for Time Machine, and it ran continually yesterday.  Today it isn't mounting.  The 4T showed on my mac desktop, but an error message stated it wouldn't mount.  I'm not super computer savvy and really need some help.  Also, the 2T g-drive is working without any problems.  My iMac is an older 2008 24" aluminum model.  It has been working well, but gets very hot in back.   What should I try now?

How have you been connecting these drives to your iMac?  USB?
Have you connected them back to your iMac the same way they were connected before?  Including making sure they have the power they need?
If all the connections are just as before, and all the drives have the power they need, have you tried shutting down your iMac and starting it up from a cold start?
If you still have trouble I would ask whether you shut everything down correctly before disconnecting/unplugging/powering-down the drives.  Unfortunately, it is possible that some of the drives were not disconnected or whatever in the proper manner, and, so, have become corrupted.  (I'm hoping not, for your sake.  However, even if so, such can be recovered, but it will take more expertise than you seem to claim for yourself.)

  • Stop external drive auto-mounting with utf8=1 option

The filenames on my external disk aren't showing up right.  I've used and am using a typical GNOME setup, and this only started happening when I stopped upgrading for a long while, then went with a complete re-install.
A little experimenting showed that mounting it without the utf8=1 option fixed those filenames. Given the labyrinth of HAL, DBus, udev and DeviceKit, how do I stop my vfat external drive mounting with utf8=1?
There's more info over at the cross-posted thread in Desktop Environments, but I felt it would be more appropriate to ask here instead.

I've "fixed" the issue by adding this line to /etc/fstab:
    UUID=3BEC-9DA3 /media/WD\040Passport vfat rw,user,uid=1000,gid=100,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=0,noauto,flush 0 0
This stops the utf8=1 option being used when I hotplug my external disk.
However, GNOME now has a phantom "WD Passport" external drive icon. It never seems to point to anything, and whenever it's so much as selected, an error dialog appears saying that nothing is mounted there. Another, actual drive icon can access the disk, but the phantom icon is annoying.
Does anybody have a better way of setting mount options in this setup than using /etc/fstab?
If not, does anybody know how to get rid of the phantom drive icon?

  • Can't get drive to mount using autofs (long)

I am trying to autoload cartridges from my Dell RD1000 usb drive, but have not been successful.  autofs4 module is loaded in rc.conf, and autofs daemon is there as well. I can manually mount the drive using /dev/sdc1 or /dev/disk/by-uuid/etc (what I get from the blkid command).  However, if I plug in a drive it does not automount.  I'm sure I'm missing something here, but cannot figure out what that might be.

The explanation in the howto that I'm following is:(they use vchanger, I use rd1000, mine is a 15sec timeout)
After restarting the autofs daemon, whenever a file or directory with a full path beginning with '/mnt/vchanger' is accessed, the autofs filesystem will search the map defined in the /etc/auto.vchanger file for a key matching the path being accessed. In this case, the only key in /etc/auto.vchanger is the wildcard '*', meaning any path name beginning with '/mnt/vchanger' will match. Autofs then automatically mounts the device mapped to the wildcard key at the path being accessed. The /etc/auto.vchanger map file specifies the device to be mounted as /dev/disk/by-uuid/&. The '&' is substituted for the key value. For example, when a program attempts to access /mnt/vchanger/9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35 (or any files or directories below it) the autofs daemon will look at the auto.vchanger map for the key 9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35 and discover that it should mount /dev/disk/by-uuid/9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35 at /mnt/vchanger/9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35 with mount options '-fstype=auto,rw,sync'. After a period of 30 seconds of no activity, autofs will automatically unmount the device.
Always make sure autofs is working properly before continuing with setting up vchanger. If using the above autofs config files, when you plug in a USB drive with filesystem UUID of, say, 9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35, you should be able to list its contents with the command
    # ls /mnt/vchanger/9667f83c-6150-44c7-b0d4-57564f174b35
The ls command should trigger an automatic mount of the partition. Then after waiting for the timeout period, the drive should automatically be unmounted.

  • My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. And now it will not mount despite my various efforts. I don't know what else to do. Can someone help me with this?

My G RAID thunderbolt drive mounted just fine onto my iMac this morning. I copied some files from another drive onto the RAID drive, ejected it, and worked on another project for a few hours. When I went to mount the RAID drive again so I could work on the project associated with the drive (I'm a freelance video editor) it would not mount. I've tried everything. It boots up perfectly fine, the drive seems to have no hardware problems. It shows up on Disk Utility and in System Information but is listed as not mounted. I've verified it on Disk Utility and it tells me everything with the drive is fine. I've tried all the various restarting my iMac, ejecting and reconnecting the drive, shutting down the whole system and starting it back up, relaunching Finder, and nothing works. Starting to panic because this is a client's drive, I have no idea what the issue is, it worked perfectly fine only hours ago, nothing happened to it in the meantime, and I fear continuously connecting and ejecting it because I don't know what the state is with the data and if this is only going to further aggravate the problem. I've been up and down Apple and g-raid forums and can't get a straight answer anywhere. I need to know that the data is safe, the drive is undamaged, and how to get it to mount on my iMac. Can anyone out there help me with this??

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • External Drives Won't Mount with Mavericks

My external drives will not mount with Mavericks. They did for a while but I noticed that they stopped doing so a week ago or so. I have a drobo raid, hitiachi drive in an external case and a WD Passport. The drobo goes to sleep, the Hitachi external spins and the WD flashes like its being read.
None of the drives were mounted when I loaded Mavericks and, as far as I know, they've not been erased. They did  mount for a few weeks but doesn't look they have since the beginning of November.
I have a brand new 2013 MBP 15" Retina with 750 GB SSHD, 16 GB ram and a 2.7 GHz i7. The drives are all connected via one FW800 through a Thunderbolt dongle.

I eventually gave up. I will probably get another card at some point but it probably won't be a SIIG card. Even though they are recommended by digidesign I just doesn't seem to want to work with my G5. Maybe it's some kind of weird software conflict blocking the functionality of the card? Don't know. Two cards in a row were non functional. Something is gummin up the works and the PCI slots work with the other cards I have. The only thing I did not try is plugging in the optional power connection to the FW800 card, which is supposed to be optional. I called SIIG and they had no idea what the problem was and they also said that the power plug would not make a difference for the problem I was having. Anyway, I'm gonna keep monitoring posts to this cause I'd love to hear the answer.. but I'm throwing in the towel. Good luck to the rest of you still trying to solve the riddle.

  • External Drives Won't Mount with SIIG Fire WIre 800 PCI Card

I can't get any drive to mount using this card. It's the SIIG FW 800 3 port PCI card. I've also got the SIIG FW 400 and I think a Belkin 5 port usb PCI card. I've removed the other cards leaving just the 800. I've moved them all around into different slots. Nothing Changed. I've reset the PRAM and the NVRAM. I've Unplugged system and let it sit for a while. I've had only one drive connected to the 800 card and no other 400, 800 or usb peripherals connected. That didn't help either. Again, this is the second card, so I have to assume that the odds of getting to bad cards in a row is a long shot... right? I have to assume that it's the G5 but the other cards work when put into any of the PCI slots. I know all the drives work. I'm just kind of baffled here. Oh, and in the system profiler the drive shows up as "Unknown Device" but it never mounts on the desktop. Also drives connected to the 800 PCI card don't show up in programs like Diskwarrior or Drive Genius. Starting the drive while Disk Utility is open also does nothing. So, I'm at a loss. I spoke with SIIG tech support and they said they had no idea but they could test the card if I send it to the. That would at least confirm or deny if the card is faulty. I think the card is ok and the mac is just messing with it somehow? Any Ideas? Could resetting the PMU help? I've also cleared my cache and defragged and rebuilt the data directory and all the usual utility stuff. So the system is peppier but still no drives mounting on the 800 pci card? Please shout out if you have an idea... Thanks..

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

  • After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted. Anybody else with this major problem?

After installing Mountain Lion doesn't external hard drives mount or stay mounted.
I have tried resetting my Mac's PRAM but the problem still remains.
Even USB memory sticks are unmounted efter a few seconds.
Anybody else with this major problem?

I have the same problem, although mine has not been solved by ESET update, finder settings, PRAM & SMC resets or anything else.
Don't get it, my external hard drive still works on both my housemates computers - one macbook pro (with snow leopard) and one dell, just not on mine with mountain lion.
    Any ideas for me guys?

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..
thanks a lot for having read this long post..

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.

  • Script after unmount with autofs

I have a small embedded home server running arch linux, now it should manage many (~10) external hd's. i mount them with autofs and share the /mnt folder with samba and nfs. after 10 minutes inactivity, i unmount each hard drive. is it possible to start a script when a hard drive unmounts, and to start another script when autofs mounts it again? the script talks to the serial port and a microcontroller turns off each hard drive.

The AE scripting host only works with AE running. It doesn't even work with just hooking up to ESTK. You realyl need to run the AE process one way or another. Of course scripts can be invoked by triggering teh respective menu commands or providing them as commandline parameters then, but that very much is the long and short of it. Generally one would rather run a plug-in or script panel from within AE and connect to the external processes...

  • External HFS encrypted password change & Drive mounting in Disk Utility without password

    I have two questions:
    1. I have an external HFS encyrpted drive that was encrypted via Mavericks Disk Utility. I have the password for it in 1password but I cannot cut and paste it when it attempts to mount. It is a very long password and it would not be practical to type it manually. It seems that Apple does not permit pasting such passwords (I have also tried to copy the password to a sticky note and then into the drive mount password prompt with no results, thus it is not unique to 1Password). At any rate, to remedy this situation, I would like to change the password to something smaller and memorizable (which is very very unfortunate as I find this a gaping security issue for who, in their right mind will manualy type in a 60 character password every time?). I have not been able to locate a method to change this external drive's password. Any assistance would be greatly apprecaiated.
    2. Alarmingly, I AM able to mount the drive WITHOUT entry of the password if I do a verify disk and repair disk. This is horrifying. This means that without any password someone can mount the drive just by running these utilities.
    Thanks in advance.

You wrote: "It's definitely formatted for windows...I have Disk Warrior, but it doesn't see my drive "DiskWarrior only works on disks in Mac OS formats, e.g. "Mac OS Extended" (aka HFS Plus or HFS+), "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." It won't fix disks in MS-DOS/FAT32 format.
There are PC-specific disk utilities, akin to DiskWarrior for Mac, so if you have a PC as well, a PC disk utility might help repair the directory corruption if run from a PC.
External drives, whether they're formatted for PCs or Macs, can be subject to the same causes of directory corruption discussed in See my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ. Some of those causes have nothing to do with hardware failure and many are preventable.
    Good luck!

  • Hard drives mount, icons appear, can't access contents

    Hi.
I recently bought a 17' macbook pro 2.6. I previously had a g4 with four hard drives in it, so I took a couple of them out and put them in external cases. I also have a few external hard drives that were always externals (never in the g4).
The problem I have is that I cannot access one of the formerly internal hard drives. It appears in disk utility and I verified it and there was a minor repair needed (I forget what), so I used the repair function and nothing has changed. The drive icon appears on the desktop, but not under "devices" in the finder window. When I double click on the drive on the desktop, any open finder windows disappear for a few seconds, then reappear, but the drive does not open.
The same thing happens about half of the time with another external drive that was always an external drive. The strange thing is that, even if I can't open the drive, iTunes can access the music files and library on that drive.
And as if that weren't strange enough, about half of the times that I select "documents" from the "places" menu in the finder window, the same thing happens (finder windows disappear for a few seconds and the documents folder doesn't open), yet I can access my documents folder through my home folder.
The other drive I pulled from my g4 is currently my time machine drive and has no similar problems. Two other external drives also have no problems.
    Does this ring any bells?
    Thanks,
    - Bruce

I just tried the most offending drive on my wife's computer (macbook 2.16) and the drive mounts fine and I can open it with no trouble.
