Unable to disable plugins

I was using mobile broadband to connect to the Internet. Because it was prepaid and video was what ate up the most MBs I disabled all the plug-ins such as flash player, realplayer etc...that allowed video to run on webpages. This worked just fine and since I didn't care about video it wasnt a problem and I did it for over a year. Recently I subscribed to cable broadband so I no longer use the mobile broadband. I enabled all the video plug-ins and I am all set. The problem lies in the following. I gave the mobile broadband device to my mother to use for her desktop as I did. She has a computer but only uses it to check email etc...in a very limited capacity to where paying for a monthly Internet ISP doesn't make much sense so the prepaid mobile broadband is perfect. She is running Windows Vista and Firefox version-3.6 The problem is when I go into her firefox to disable the same video plug-ins that I disabled on mine, they do not stay disabled which allows video to play on all sites which burns through her prepaid Internet balance at an insane rate. I am able to disable them however as soon as I restart firefox, they are automatically enabled again. I've tried a dozen times or more and have tried rebooting the computer, etc... and nothing works. They are disabled but as soon as firefox restarts and I check they are once again enabled. Can you please tell me what is going on and how to fix it? I Feel bad because she specifically got rid of her Internet service because I gave her this to use and now she cant use it because it is costing a fortune. Thank You

Note that Adobe doesn't make the latest version of Adobe Reader available to Windows Vista users. It does seem to run just fine under that operating system, however. On the following page, you can simply select either Windows 7 or Windows 8 to get the latest installer.

    When I try to stream TV shows with Firefox, I receive high Firefox disc usage warnings from my Norton antivirus. I believe this is due to the gigantic plugin-container.exe that Firefox apparently runs the Flash player inside of. When I look at it in Taskmaster plugin-container has been using 150 k + after just a few minutes and continues to go higher the longer I watch. If I continue to watch without doing anything, eventually the video begins to stutter and then stops while the sound keeps playing. My system slows down to the point where it takes 5 min to stop the player after clicking the control, and a half hour for my system to process the commands to shut down Firefox and restart.
    I've been able to work around this by putting the AV into extended Silent Mode to save CPU and by closing the browser after each and every episode, then reopening it again. Obviously this isn't an optimal solution.
    I tried shutting down plugin-container using the Taskmaster but this also killed my video. When I closed the window and restarted the video, the plug-in-container came back. In this current version of Flash 20.0.1 is there a way to disable it forever that will also allow me to stream video? IE8 didn't play nice with web pages but Firefox isn't playing nice with video streaming. Is there a fix that doesn't involve a new PC?

    Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. We know the problem isn't with Flash because I was running it without huge background files or lock-up up while using IE8.
    Installing an older version of Flash isn't an option because newer versions resolve some of the memory usage and flickering problem that older Flash versions caused on the new Hulu site. Some sites also require the newest patch and return an error message if an older version is detected.
    I'm not sure what protected Flash mode does or doesn't do and hate to mess around with Flash when we already know it's been running without issues on my system using the other browser.
    What I DO know is that the problem only started occurring when I made the switch from IE8 to Firefox. This weekend I had it happen again when I only had Firefox open and the Norton AV running out of Silent Mode in the background. Only the Flash thumbnails on the Hulu home page were active, not the Flash player and I started to get slowdown and lose mouse control.
    I posted the issue over on the Norton forum also but don't expect a workaround. I think disabling that huge plugin-container file might help. By the time I've watched one video both Firefox and plug-in container are up around 200k each, much,much, much larger than anything else running on my system.
    So is disabling plugin-containter still viable? Firefox crashing is never going to happen, if plug-in container freezes up my system first. Continually closing and reopening Firefox as a workaround doesn't seem to be way it was intended to perform.

    Might you have a newly acquired iPad that is still locked to someone else's Apple ID?  If that is the case, then you will need the former owner's Apple ID and password to proceed.  That feature is called Activation Lock and described here:

    If you cannot get that former owner's Apple ID and password, you will never be able to use the iPad.

    If you mean. Settings> General>Restrictions>Allowed Content>Websites, then disable the restrictions and you should be able to do what you want to do.

    Safari 4.0.4 or 4.0.3 ??  your profile shows you are running v10.6.8.
    If you are running v10.6.8, click your Apple menu  / Software Update. The current version of Safari is 5.0.5.
    Then if necessary, reinstall Flash.

    Is there a way in Firefox to globally disable plugins and allow only certain sites to run them (i.e., a whitelist)? I've tried working with CAPS, but it doesn't seem to be able to turn off <embed> or <object> tags, only certain aspects of JavaScript. I know about FlashBlock, but I've heard it's easy to circumvent and isn't meant for security. NoScript has this ability, and it's great for my own PC, but I'm looking for something more simple that I can use on the PCs of my friends and relatives.

    No, not in the basic Firefox build, and I haven't seen an extension with those features that is simple enough for the "average user" to use.
    Flashblock only blocks Flash, Shockwave, and Authorware. Plugins like Java, Silverlight, and other aren't blocked by Flashblock. There is one manual control extension for JavaScript, Java, Flash, and Silverlight - Quick Java - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1237/ - but there is no "whitelist", only toolbar /statusbar buttons to toggle those plugins on/off.
    As you mentioned, NoScript has features to block specific plugins from running automatically, and also has a "whitelist" so those plugins will run automatically on "trusted" websites, but getting the NoScript "whitelist" set up is a continuing job. It can be a frustrating extension to use for even "above-average users".
    I use NoScript on my Windows desktop PC's as it is intended to be used - allowing JavaScript per domain / website by "allowing" or "temporarily allowing", but on my Linux netbook ''(900MHz processor and only 1GB of RAM)'' I have it set to ''Allow Scripts Globally'', so I don't have to allow JavaScript for each domain on every website I visit. When I first got that netbook I ran for a few months without blocking anything, but after Firefox getting stalled by too many unnecessary plugin presentations I installed Flashblock. After a few weeks I realized that Flashblock wasn't blocking enough of the plugins that were causing problems, so I switched to NoScript with ''Allow Scripts Globally'' selected. IMO, Linux is much less of a target than Windows PC's are as far as exploits and Malware are concerned.

  • IOS 7.0.4 Messages not working, unable to disable iMessage

    After upgrading to IOS 7.0.4, I am unable to send Messages from my iPad2. I have the same issue on my iPhone 5s but I was able to disable iMessages in Settings and it works in SMS mode. I tried to disable iMessage in Settings on my iPad 2 but each time I do it then prompts me for my Apple ID password everytime I launch Messages. When I enter my password it accepts it but it enables iMessage, which will not send a text, I get the "not delivered". Since I'm unable to disable iMessage as described above, I'm completely unable to send any text messages from my iPad. Luckily I do not get the same results on my 5s, it allows me to disable iMessage and does NOT prompt me for my Apple ID/password and therefore does NOT reenable iMessage.
    I've tried closing Messages and power cycling my iPad2 but the same issue occurs.
    Both devices are runing IOS 7.0.4.

    Thanks for the replies from all. The first issue was that I don't have a cellular iPad (I forget) so of course I could not turn off iMessage as I did on my 5s.
    The real issue was that when my Wife's 5s was upgraded from IOS 7.0.3 iMessage was disabled. This did not happen on my 5s or my Daughter's 5s so I didn't expect it.
    So, check to make sure that iMessage is enabled after upgrading from 7.0.3 to 7.0.4.

    When you are logged in as both a Developer and End User, you will ALWAYS see the Save button, even if it is disabled. This is so that you can save the Defaults for an IR. Thus, if you click on the save option, you should only see one item - Save Report Defaults. You will not be able to save a custom report.
    Your end-users are not logged in as developers, and thus, won't see any save icon at all. In fact - if you log out of APEX and run just your application, neither will you.

  • Unable to disable root after solving login issues

    Having followed the steps to regain access to my macbook pro after upgrading to OS X 10.5, I am now unable to disable root as an account or remove the "Other" account from my login in screen.
    I have tried using Directory Utility, but this doesn't show root as enabled. However, when I click on enable root, nothing happens so I cannot even enable and then disable.
    I can still login as "root" and I am concerned with leaving this active.
    Can anyone suggest a method of disabling the root account?

    In case anyone else is having this issue, I've found a fix that's worked for my configuration.
    In my usual account, which is also and administrators account, I opened Terminal from Utilities and typed:
    dsenableroot
    at the the prompt. I was then asked for my account password
    I was then asked for a root password - I entered the root password I created when I reset the password from the installer password reset utility, and then confirmed the same password.
    I then entered the disable command:
    dsenableroot -d
    followed by my usual account password.
    After shutting down and rebooting, I only had my usual account login left and the mysterious "Other" had disappeared and root was disabled.

    I have edited a project in FCS HD and went back to make some changes and now when I open the project I get an error message that says "Unable to locate plugin "Boris Red 3.0 FCP Filter."
    I used the Boris Red application to make some effects and had no problem with this before. I have located the filter in the users library/Application support files but I can't get Final Cut Pro to accept it. I went to the Boris Red website and found no help there, nor have they responded to my requests for assistance so I thought I would look here.
    Another user posted this same problem at another website and the responses he got were not useful either. Can anyone help?

    I re-installed the program and nothing changed. How do I retro FCP?
    The older version I used does not work on Intel Mac Pros and the graphics card it requires is also obsolete. (Actually, it died and couldn't be replaced which forced me to drop my G5 and get a new MAc Pro which started this whole nightmare in the first place!)
    So am I screwed? There really is no way to fix this and save all that work now? I have the After Effects program so would it be better to just forget about Boris altogether and redo the entire project in After Effects?
    If so, I can't believe what a waste of time and money Boris is. All because FCP cannot locate ONE filter? When the filter is sitting right where it is supposed to be?

    When i disable plugins firefox runs faster. I could uninstall the plugins, but i periodically want to use them. I have tried using click to play but i want some plugins to run automatically.

    i don't use any cleanup tools & MSE is my security software, which is rather unobtrusive and shouldn't interfere here...
    i currently have one blocklisted plugin (see screenshot), but if i remember it correctly the problem was already present in my case before i had the outdated acrobat plugin installed.
    sometimes when you enable/disable a plugin in the addons manager & press f5 afterwards, it immediately switches back to its old state/sometimes it will stay on the new state until a restart of the browser & in some cases it will remember the state even across sessions - it's just not working reliably in any way.
    as far as i can observe the pluginreg.dat file in my profile folder the change of a plugin's state isn't written to the file as soon as it's toggled in the UI during a session, but only when the browser is getting closed - so the information has to be in the memory somewhere before and might be getting corrupted. i suspect it might be a general bug but i cannot reproduce it reliably .
