Unable to install .p5p  package in global zones in Solaris 11

Hello All,
I have few zones configured on my Solaris 11 node which are up and running. I have a package in a .p5p archive package which i need to install in my global zone as well as the non-global zones. I dont want to use a network based repository for the installation.
When i try to install the package it gives me the below error
"pkg install: The proposed operation on this parent image can not be performed because
temporary origins were specified and this image has children. Please either
retry the operation again without specifying any temporary origins, or if
packages from additional origins are required, please configure those origins
persistently."
1. How to install a .p5p package without a network based repository ?
2. Is it possible to install packages from the global zone to non-global zones without having to log on to each of the zones ?
TIA,
Sudhir

Package can be installed from global zone to local zone. When you issue pkgadd command from global zone it will distribute the package to local zones.Solaris 11 packaging does not use pkgadd(1M), it uses pkg(1M), described in more detail in pkg(5). Unlike in Solaris 10, the global zone and each non-global zone can have a disjoint set of packages. Thus, it is possible to minimize the global zone but have a zone that has most of Solaris installed. To allow this, pkg does not cause packages that are installed in the global zone to be automatically installed in non-global zones. For most use cases, this is a big improvement over the way things worked in Solaris 10.
Note that pkgadd(1M) is still available in Solaris 11 to allow you to install legacy svr4 packages. Even when using pkgadd on Solaris 11, it does not cross zone boundaries.

  • Installing Pakcage in Non Global Zone

    Hi,
I have SUNWbtool package that is installed in Global Zone but not installed in one my (Non-global) Zones called test
Below are parameters of package on Global Zone.
    SUNW_PKG_ALLZONES='true'
    SUNW_PKG_HOLLOW='false'
But somehow I can't see this package in one of my test Zone. How to get this package reflected into my test Zone as it is already installed in Global Zone?
This package is required to install Oracle10G grid on on my Test Zone.

it's possible that it's not happening due to questions being asked in the install process. Which version of Sol 10 are you using? ( cat /etc/release)

  • Unable to Install any packages in Fink

I am unable to install any packages either via Fink commander or via the terminal. I was able to install some just the other day, so I don't know what went wrong.
I have not been able to get Fink commander to see any package lists, despite following every bit of advice I could find in these forumns and on the net. Also, I updated the repositories rsync as instructed on the net. I can see the list of Fink packages by running "Fink List". However, when I try to install "sudo apt-get install xyz package" I connstantly receive the error "xyz package not found".
I'm sure this is a case of operator error, only I don't know what that error might be. I would be most grateful for anyone's help in this regard as I really enjoyed the Fink programs like kdegames that I was able to install before I started having this problem.
My thanks to everyone for any assistance they can provide.

I appreciate your previous response, instructing me to enter "source /sw/bin/init.sh as a user in order to run Evolution.
My problem is that this solution only lasts until I logout. When I log back and and try to run evolution via terminal, I receive the error "Command not found". Once I enter your instruction again, all is well-for that session.
Is there a way I can do this globally and make it "stick"? By making it stick I mean so that I don't have to do it each time I want to run evolution.
These issues of course don't happen when evolution is run as admin user. Also, it's worth noting that evolution is the only fink program that causes these problems. Other KDE programs like kgeography and kmahjongg don't have such issues.
I appreciate any feedback you can give with this issue.

  • Always install applications into non-global zones?

I am planning on taking full advantage of Containers and Zones as I migrate servers and applications to Solaris 10. During this migration process, I believe that I will have a need to initially just run just one application on a server. I fear that if I do this in the global zone I will lose flexibility down the road for future projects and workloads. So, should I consider always installing applications in a non-global zone and never install applications in the global zone? This would keep the global zone as the controller of the non-global zones and ensure that I can always add more non-global zones later without having to worry about what is running in the global zone.
Are there any thoughts or comments on this topic?

Yes we've found it's best to run the applications in non-global zones. Here are a few benefits, basically we only put an application in the global zone if it requires it (like Oracle RAC). Note non-RAC instances of Oracle will run in a non-global zone just fine.
Reasons to put applications in non-global zones
o Increased security (self contained environment)
o Increased flexibility for provisioning resources (CPU, memory, etc) when/if we decide to run multiple applications on the same hardware
o Increased flexibility in starting up temporary environments to debug issues in parallel to the primary environment (i.e. in another non-global zone on the same server)
o Works well with Sun Cluster (i.e. we cluster the non-global zones so that they can run across several hosts)
o Improved trouble shooting and performance diagnosis as the applications are isolated to a non-global zone
o Simplified environment for the application admins as the environment can be fine tuned for their needs (i.e. only let them see what they need)
o Disaster recovery is much faster for a non-global zone

If your pkg wants to be installed in /usr or another inherit-pkg-dir, it can't because they are share as read-only.
Verify wherer the pkg copies its files.

  • Can't install 121118-12 on global zone

Hi, after our first round of patching, we're starting again. So, I've had to upgrade my external LPS to latest patches to get it to work at all. It is now on 119788-09 and 121118-12. The patchsvr has been reconfigured to point to getupdates1.sun.com without the trailing "solaris/".
So, I then tried to get my internal LPS working...proxy isn't running. smpatch pointed to the external (DMZ) LPS without a trailing "solaris/". Has patch revisions 119788-07 and 121118-08. Note, when I use the trailing "solaris/" then I get the "no patches" message. Without that, I now get a list of 40 patches (tho' I'm expecting about 190-odd as my external LPS is at the same patch levels otherwise and smpatch which points direct to Sun comes back with 196 patches).
Just to confirm, my current.zip (/var/sadm/spool/cache/Database/http....***...current.zip) gives me a patchlist.delimited file that is 9419 lines long. That seems about right.
So I thought - gosh! I really hope that this isn't going to be a 2-step patch process (currently running kernel rev 118833-24 and have seen a few warnings about going up to the mid-30s) so maybe I have to install the latest UC client patch for this to see that it needs more patches.
    But trying to run "smpatch add -i 121118-12" barfs and finishes with the following message;
Patch 121118-12 failed to install due to a failure produced by pkgadd.

No patches to install.Funnily enough, I am running on my global zone, but patchadd and smpatch just can't seem to tell. Has there been a major update to patchadd that I've missed or is there some other reason that I can't install this patch? Do I really need to remove it all before patching again? If so, how is that affected by 119788 which also patches SUNWppror?
    Thanks for any help,
    Sally.

Also, when I was testing applying patches on zones, I would've run "patchadd -G" for some patches to see what the difference is, but I wouldn't have suspected that this would change the action of the patch forever more.
Or have these packages gotten in there another way.
    Within one of my local zones, there are no SUNW packages in the /var/sadm/install/gz-only-packages file and yet the zone cannot remove the patch;

The cancel button works, the popup information about the authorizations work,so it is not a problem that the touchscreen doesn't work. I then have to restart the phone and then installation is possible. Obviously that is not acceptable if I'm testing and have to install a new version every ten minutes. Can someone tell me what's happening?

That sounds like a weird explanation, but I did in fact change the screen brightness recently, setting it to max :-) Although I did this through the regular settings menu, not using a dedicated app. But I'll see if it makes a difference next time it happens. Thanks!

  • How to unlock Root Account in non-global zone on Solaris 10 Branded Zone

    Hello All,
I have a phsical x86 server running Solaris 11. On top of that, I have 3 Solaris 10 branded zones configured. Due to security policy the root account has been locked by 5 failed login attempts.
Is there a way by which I can unlock root account in non-global zone.
I have the root access of global zone.
Pls help as these are production servers.
    Regards

    Hey,
It worked. Actually i forgot to save the file.
    I changed the /<zonepath>/root/etc/shadow
Removed *LK* & then from global zone did zlogin -l root zonename
    Thanks  lot.

  • StarOffice8 Solaris 10 sparc: how to install only in the global zone?

    hello all,
i have installed SO8 on T2000 Solaris 10 according this doc:
    [http://notallmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2005/10/installing-staroffice-8-on-solaris-nfs.html|http://notallmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2005/10/installing-staroffice-8-on-solaris-nfs.html]
everyhing works fine except that now, i have to setup zones on my nfs server, and because the staroffice installer isn't aware of zones, and doesn't permit to do:
    pkgadd -G ...
all the zones created are very big due to staroffice (800Mb instead of 100Mb!)
so i tried the following method:
    - launch the installer so-8-ga-bin-solsparc-en-US_fr.sh without DISPLAY for example
    - go into /var/tmp/unpack_staroffice/packages
    - install all the packages manually:
pkgadd -G -d . SUNWstaroffice-* (this method is already used by OpenOffice!)
This method works well if i use soffice on the nfs server.
But on nfs client, that mount /opt/staroffice8, i got this error:
    mimosa-henry% soffice
    The application cannot be started.
The component manager is not available. How can i deal with it? Is it possible to modify some scripts to add "-G" option to pkgadd without breaking the installation? What is the component manager? What package is concerned?
    Thanks in advance for help,

    ok, the solution is here:

  • Unable to install hotfix package 2 for AppV 5 SP1 (KB2897087)

    Good afternoon,
We've downloaded hotfix package 2 for AppV 5 SP1 (KB2897087) but when going to install we receive the message "The Application Virtualization update setup did not finish because the target version of App-V Server is not installed".
What we have installed on server is the following:
    - Microsoft App-v Server 5.0.285.0
    - Microsoft App-V Server 5.0.1104.0 Service Pack 1
So we have SP1 installed. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there another patch / update that needs to be applied first?
    Thanks
