I have recently purchased a new computer (imac), and even more recently a new phone (iphone 5c). I have repeatedly authorized my computer, and yet I cannot put apps onto my phone, from iTunes.

OK, so you have your device hooked up to iTunes on the computer you sync with. You click on the Apps tab of the account profile screen and are then attempting to add the apps that are not currently installed?
What happens when you click on the "Install" button next to the App? Are you saying it does not change to "Will Install"?
Or are you getting an error when you try to sync those selected apps?
At what point in the process are you getting an error, and what is the error that you are getting?

Ok, sorry. And yes, I just restored my iPhone as new and tried to put all the songs on there before I even restored with my previous backup, but it still does the same thing... even when I just checked the option to sync only "selected music or videos". How's that possible?
P.S. After I tried syncing with checked songs only, nothing showed up under Music on my phone and this message popped up in iTunes: "The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish." If you could, please tell me what that means, thanks.

There is nothing to backup.
If the device is showing the Connect to iTunes screen, there is nothing on the device to backup.
The first step in the update process is a backup... restore the device using that backup and try again.

I put an app onto my phone via my comp when there wasn't space on my phone originally to download it directly. Now however, everytime I visit the app store on my phone it tries to download the same app that's already there. How can I stop it doing this?

My phone didn't have space on it when I originally tried downloading a large app (Infinity Blade), so I downloaded the app on my computer to save time and removed apps from my phone to make space for it.
I then connected my phone to my computer and transferred the app across onto my phone and it works fine.
However, everytime I visit the App Store on my phone it starts downloading this same app until it tells me there isn't enough space for it at which point the app goes back to its normal already downloaded self and I can carry on playing the same game.
How can I stop it from trying to re-download everytime I visit the app store?

If it's still trying to download the app to your phone, then it thinks the app is not on the device.
A reset or restart would be a good starting point to clear up the attempts to redownload the app.

I just found out my incredibly stubborn teenager's iphone hasn't been backed up at all since last spring. Her old 3gs was previously synced with my computer, but I thought she was syncing her 4 with her own macbook - evidently not. I mean the world will end if she loses a single text message from last year. Can it be done? And if it can, I need step by step, idiot-proof instructions so I don't mess anything up. My husband says if she will get it to back up to icloud, it will automatically sync the songs from her laptop? Is that right? Or does it still need to be synced to itunes on that computer?
