Unable to save Photoshop files in original folder: file disappears

Hi,
At random moments when I'm saving layered Photoshop CS5 files, a message pops up with the following text:
Could not save "\...\FileName..." because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.
Well the strange thing is that I'm the administrator, the only user of this PC and even when I set/check the properties of the folder containing the files this continues to happen. What is even more disturbing is that I have to save my file as a new file in a new location and when I check the original file, it is no longer in it's original folder.
I save all my files to the local HD and I use an external device to backup my files. I regularly get notices on my backup device telling me that various files were deleted, but will be kept until I need the room. These are files which I did not delete, they are files which I'm still working on.
I'm having to save to the original job folder first, save to the desktop when I get the notice saying I can't save, and then save back into the original folder when I can't save on the desktop anymore because of the same error message. I sometimes get a similar Adobe error message which is basically along the same lines, but I haven't noted the exact text yet.
Recently I closed a file which I had saved and when I needed to return to it, it was nowhere on my computer. I'm very organised about file saving, so it's not a matter of saving files in the wrong place.
I no longer run my back up continuously while I'm working because while it's great to have the peace of mind that I'm regularly backed up, my files can get up to 2GB in size and I think the backup running at the same time is slowing Photoshop processes down, so I most often pause it until I take a break. On this occasion, I had been running it while working (smaller file) and so I was able to retrieve an earlier version from my backup which saved me from having to re-do the job completely. I didn't get this problem when I was using CS5 on Vista, it's been since I've been using Windows7 and my back up drive.
I only recall having had this problem with PSDs, but that could just be because these files can take up to ten hours to complete and there's a higher chance of getting an error message over a longer period of time.
It doesn't happen very often by there has been the very rare occasion where two versions of exactly the same file have been visible in the original job folder (same name on both files). To check if files are where they're supposed to be or if they seem to exhist, I have to close the job folder and re-open it.
I'll disconnect my back up drive while I'm working and see how it goes. It's not ideal, but probably worth a try.
I don't know if there's a connection, but occasionally windows randomly sticks a lock on zipped folders which I create, regardless of the permissions I apply to the upper level folder they sit in.  I'm told by a friend that it won't affect other people accessing these zipped folders from other machines. I don't know if that's the case, I always change the zipped folder's permission to include 'Users' and that makes the lock disappear.
I will run this file disappearance thing by Microsoft, but I thought I'd run it buy you guys first in case you can shed any light on it.
Meanwhile here are my specs. If you have any suggestions on how I can boost my computer's performance for large format print work in Photoshop I'd be happy to know. It's not bad now, but faster is always more pleasant:

A great first chapter Charlie. Can't wait for the rest of the book.
The only time I've had anything like this happen, was in a new build after hooking the drives from the old system, but the permissions really were screwed up, and it was a straight forward fix. Is the machine networked perhaps? The files open in another app? I expect you answered this already somewhere in your forum equivalent of War & Peace. ;-) The lads on the Premiere Pro hardware forum can be disparaging about Dell and HP machines, saying their proprietary hardware and software are inaccessible, so I wonder if it is something along those lines.
I’d definitely unhook the second drive as a starting point, or at least double/treble check its permissions.
The only other thing I can think of is changing the state of ‘Save as to original folder’ in Preferences > file handling, but this is all very tenuous and straw clutching.

  • Reading file from a folder : File dir = new File(URL+aFile_to_add);

    Hi,
Trying to read files from a dir on my site using a JSP and bean. I've tried nearly every option for the filepath I can think of and it doesn't seem to be finding the file...
    Here's the bit:
    String URL = "images\\wedding_photos\\";
    File dir = new File(URL+aFile_to_add);
    String[] files = dir.list();
It's working locally, but I obviously had to change the path from c://... to the above.
The full code is listed below in the addWedding Method
The method removes the .jpg from the file name and then writes the new file name to a database

  • LR cc does not save files in Original Folder - various folder issues

the LR cc application is in my Windows 7 C: drive, a 256 MB Solid State Drive.  I keep all my images on a 1T Hard drive, "My Pictures."  I convert raw CR2 files to DNG files using the Adobe DNG converter, and store them in a labeled folder in My Pictures (on the 1T hard drive).  I then make jpegs from the DNG image files, often with lots of "development" (adjustments.)  When I save them, I export them to the "Same Folder As Original."  BUT, they are always exported to an entirely new folder located on my C: Drive, my SSD.  This error started happening recently; I have used lightroom for several years and never had this issue.  In addition, it seems to make a copy of my DNG files in the same folder, and those files seem to be different from my originals.  (I think lightroom keeps track of the adjustments somehow, without using sidecar files.  I don't know how that works.  I got an error message when I tried to use one of the DNG files after I deleted them from the C: drive.
What's going on?  I tried looking at Preferences but did not find a relevant topic.

I have to say that menu bar has been the same for many, if not all, versions of LR. It also give you a description of what each option does, IIRC.
You have all the options you need, "Copy as DNG" (What that does is take whatever file extension you are using, even a DNG file, and converts it to a DNG, Yes even if the original is a DNG), "Copy" (I hope you know what that does. COPIES the files from the original location to another location of your choosing), "Move" (MOVES the file/files from the original location and places it/them in a folder of your choosing) all the above also put the images in the LR database and last but not least Add (All that does is add the images to your Lightroom database).
I always use the ADD option as I copy my images off the memory card to a folder or folders of my choosing first.

  • Applications don't "Open" or "Save As" into file's original folder anymore.

When I am working in any software package, I am having opening and saving problems.
    1. When I attempt to open an file, the software defaults to my user Documents folder rather than the last used folder. Even after I've been working a while.
    2. When I attempt to "save as" a document, the software defaults to the parent folder of the file's folder rather than the file's folder.
    3. When I click on the "Recent Places" drop down in the "Save As" screen, my apps crash.
I have tossed a few prefs.
    1. Illustrator Prefs Folder - But this is not an Adobe only issue. It's system-wide.
    2. Finder Prefs
    3. A few others I don't rememeber. Sorry.

Then, the problem's system-wide and you might consider doing an Archive & Install installation (see http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/ for details), saving user and network settings. Backup your current installation to an external, bootable HD using something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. so you can get back toi where you are now.

  • Publishing AIR file deletes original icon files

I have seeral Flash/AIR projects where I have selected app icons in the AIR Application and Installer Settings dialog. Every time I build the AIR file, the entire directory containing those icon files is deleted. The files correctly end up in the generated AIR file, but how do I keep it from deleting my originals every time?
If it matters, I store the icon images in a subdirectory under where the .fla and accompanying files live, like this:
    MyProject/
        project.fla
        something.as
        project.swf
        AppIconsForAIRPublish/
            icon-128x128.png
            icon-32x32.png
            icon-16x16.png
            icon-48x48.png
Why does it delete the icons and the containing folder after building the .air file, and how can I prevent it?

Another thing I learned is that you might have the icon file embeded in the application somewhere and that removes it from the include in AIR package screen. That shows the same 303 error. See more detalis here : http://spy6.blogspot.com/2009/10/error-creating-air-file-303error-some.html

  • How to replace m4a conversion files with original mp3 files in iTunes library to reduce disk space?

    Hello
I have a rather large music collection most of which is in mp3 format and also kept in seperate folders to my iTunes music. I had iTunes set up copy media to iTunes folder as m4a so now have two sets of files which are now taking up a large proportion of my hard disk space. Is there an easy way to move my mp3 files into the Itunes folder to replace the copies then delete the copied files.
    Many thanks

By m4a are we talking compressed AAC?  Those don't take up any more room than the equivalent mp3 and probably give you better quality.
Are you positive those files are m4a?  If iTunes is set to copy media when you add it to the library I don't think it converts.  It only converts when you import.
Since we're not talking replacing mp3s with mp3s I don't know if there is an way to more or less invisibly replace the files.  If you were replacing a file with one of identical file name, you can trick iTunes into accepting it.  Since the new files end in mp3 and the old ones in m4a I suspect you will end up having to add the new files and delete the others.  This will of course mean you have to rebuild playlists and update tags.  Before you delete the old copy you can use Dougscript "Copy Tag Info Tracks To Tracks" to transfer some of the tag information that you might wish to retain such as playcount, ratings, last played, etc.

  • Flash CS6 - Unable to save document (to windows server) [OSX Mavericks]

Since updating to OSX Mavericks, I've been unable to save to our network server (HP Proliant with raid 6 running Windows 2008 R2).
I can save to any given filename once (open an old file from pre-OSX update and then save / create a new file and then save it as something) - any subsequent saves to that file name result in a warning dialogue box similar to this:
The original FLA will also corrupt during the attempted save process. The file size will also bloat.
For example my intial test file is listed as 211KB in finder
I open it perform an amend and save it once - that works fine. My file is still 211KB in finder
I then reopen it for another amend and attempt to save.
The unable to save warning dialogue appears. The file is now 421KB in finder and corrupt.
If I try to resave after the first file save fails the file continues to bloat.
e.g. if I attempt to save it another twice the file will now show as 843KB in finder and still be corrupt

    Hi,
While this issue is being fixed, you can recover the corrupted files by following the below steps
    1. Change the file extension of your corrupted fla to zip eg: corrupt.fla to corrupt.zip
    2. Extract the zip file
    3. Open the xfl file from the extracted folder in Flash CC(you will see the file is of up to date and non-corrupted)
    Other trivial work-arounds:
    1. Save your file as .xfl(uncompressed fla) instead of .fla
    2. Connect your shared location via afp protocol on Mac 10.9 whereever-possible
    3. Use Mac 10.8 or lower versions if-possible
    Thanks!

  • Spotlight inconsistent -  files in Downloads folder and/or SeeAllResults

    Hi
I'm currently assessing Punakea http://www.nudgenudge.eu/home, an app that allows one to tag files and stuff. It uses the comments field so in theory everything is still findable via Spotlight.
When tagging a file with Punakea one to choose to leave the file where it is, or to move it to Punakea's folder.
After much to-ing and fro-ing where I thought I was going mad, I have narrowed it to 6 test cases.
    3 files in Download folder
    - file A I manually added comment @AKK
    - file B I used Punakea to add tag AKK and left file in place
    - file C I used Punakea to add tag AKK and asked Punakea to move file
3 files in Mail Download folder
    - file D I manually added comment @AKK
    - file E I used Punakea to add tag AKK and left file in place
    - file F I used Punakea to add tag AKK and asked Punakea to move file
A Punakea tag looks like this:###begintags###@AKK;###endtags###
(though there are some spaces up the front)
Then I searched in Spotlight for @AKK and it only found files A, D, E, F. Clearly Spotlight was treating the Downloads folder differently. I used the Spotlight preferences to first exclude that folder -- and file A stopped appearing. Then I removed the exclusion and, after some audible disk whirring, file B appeared.
So I thought I had fixed the problem, so tried another to match the file C case, and then noticed that file B had disappeared again.
I realised that I was on OS 10.5.2 so I upgraded to 10.5.4 and repeated the Spotlight preference changes, but got the same results.
For good measure, I removed Punakea's folder from Spotlight, and correclty file F dissappeared.
I then reinstated it, and I finally saw all 6 of the files listed. I clicked on Show all results and saw all 6. Came back to this post to keep typing - and then went back to check again - and now there's only 4 again - B and C have gone.
I must confess that throughout this whole test sometimes I have juts looked at the files in the Spotlight drop down, and other times I have used the 'See all results' - am now starting to consider that this is part of the issue, and so I need to repeat the whole exercise.
Throughout all of this Punakea found its files, B, C, E and F.
I suppose one workaround is to create a new Downloads folder for Firefox and use that instead.
There was a post to the Punakea forum http://www.nudgenudge.eu/support/spotlight-indexing-behavior which makes me realise I'm not the first person to fall down this particular rabbit hole.
    Any comments ?
    Cheers.
