Unable To Use Phone Keypad (# or *)?

I recently purchased the "Calling Card" application:
Trying to use it, I noticed I was unable to enter # or *
and to my surprise was told the iPhone doesn't allow applications
to enter these.
This seems silly since these two keys are part of the phone
and used extensively when entering numbers inside any IVR
out there...is this correct or is this program just trying
to blame someone else?

Those buttons work using the Calling Card application?
