Understanding Installed Applications on OSX
I'm new with a Macbook Pro. I am a pure Linux user and now I'm working on a nice shiny new Macbook Pro running 10.8.3. I tried to download PostgreSQL 9 for my Macbook Pro. I double clicked the PostgreSQL 'dmg' file I downloaded. I then got a new window that showed two files:
1. postgresql-9.2.3-2-osx
2. readme
I clicked the item above listed as #1 and I was prompted for my Macbook Pro's administrator password and then I got some mesage pretaining to shared memory not being high enough blah blah blah...and then I'm back staring at the window with the two files I extacted from the 'dmg' file.
So basically I have no understanding if the PostgreSQL application installed or is taking up space on my hard drive. How can I tell? I just want to remove it but I don't see it under my 'Application' menu at all but want to make sure all files that "may" have been loaded during my botched install are gone. Can anyone help me?
When I use Spotlight, I see a bunch of files and also folders pertaining to PostgreSQL. I just don't know / understand how to remove everything off my system. I don't want orphaned files / folders for an application I can't use on this. I just want to delete it all. Does OS X not have a command line utility or some kind of graphical tool to help me remove this junk?
I have no idea if the following list I used in terminal with the 'find' command is stuff I installed or was just pre-packaged into OS X...

There are some errors in the log file, I only included the portions where the errors are listed. The initial lines are at the top of the log file, then I skipped to the section where the other errors were. I can include the whole log if

I'm presuming the first 2 errors are OK and just indicate optional startup modes for prerequisiteinstaller.exe
The 2nd set of errors seems more serious. I don't see ServerManagerCmd.exe on my PC that's listed in the error
I don't understand the last error which I'm supposing triggered the listed error even though there are other errors in the log.
Many of the existing posts don't match the configuration I'm using, and the ones that do match didn't seem to provide a usable answer. Any help is appreciated. Do these problems exist using Sever 2012 Standard? I will try that, but would
like to resolve the issue here with R2.

AlanServerManagerCMD.exe is a deprecated utility and (as far as I know) is only found on Server 2008 versions, so I'm surprised it's needed for the preinstaller. Are you trying to install SharePoint 2010?

How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch
Hi,
I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.

DonIf you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.

Install Application - TextArea inside JScrollPane
I've been working on an install application to install another one of my programs (next/accept/next/ finish type of thing) and had a couple questions and would appreciate any help anyone can give.
Some Background info:
I made images and have them display as image icons through jlabels for the buttons and background. The labels have classes applying various mouselisteners (Mousepressed, MouseEntered, MouseExited, etc) changing the images and moving from screen to screen. I have my layout set to null, not for any particular reason, but because I have no formal education in layout managers.
1) Is there a conical solution to moving through various windows? That is, right now I move through the various 'screens' with a check on an int called state, that gets incremented and decremented through forward and back buttons. I looked at some code given to us on a test by our teacher (we had to find bugs) and saw that he had implemented a fake "state" interface, with constants like "Account_State" to control where you were in the program. This seems a bit easier to read than ints, but is there a correct built in version of his states?
2) On the second screen I have a license agreement (actually required for the application that gets installed), and a checkbox. The license is held inside of a JTextArea(scroll) inside a JScrollPane(textscroll). The JScrollPane is extending in weird ways. The following is a stripped down version of my code (it runs and demonstrates the problem):

I've tried a number of different things I got from searching the forums at different points in the code (setting the number of rows/columns, setting max and min sizes, etc etc) The code above that wraps the text I could have sworn I tried 3 times before it magically worked... I also tried using the awt component for textareas that had the scrollbars built in, but scrapped it after having even more difficulties with that one. I'm trying to get the textbox to only go down about 300 px and 300 px to the right. Using the graphical editor to change it produces a null pointer error at compile time(?!?). Can anyone help me to get the textbox to render as I want it to?

If you are using Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows in Mountain Lion, read and follow the installation instructions. Downloading the Windows support software is one of the first options in the Boot Camp Assistant memu. There is no Mountain Lion disk containing the support software. -
Cannot install applications because the certificate for .... is not valid

We have an in house enterprise app that can no longer update. We have taken the steps outlined here. These steps include installing a SSL certificate on the server from a trusted CA (GeoTrust) that shows as valid in Safari on OSX. Also the http to https redirect has been setup and verified in Safari and FireFox. Addtionally, the plist file's XML has been manually updated to point HTTPS. New installs work on iOS 7.1 without an issue.
However, the program has automatic updates that fail with the message "Cannot install applications because the certificate for .... is not valid".
The update process works like this:
A Plist file exists on the server that contains the version number of the build on the server. The app will download the file and parse it into a NSDictionary then the verison into an NSString. If the version doesn't match the current version then the user is prompted to install updates.
When the user says yes to the prompt a UIApplication is sent the Open URL message with a hard coded download URL that looks like this:
imts-services//?action=download-manifest&url=http://www.example.com/app/Release.plist
On iOS 7.1 the user will receive the message "Cannot install applications because the certificate for example is not valid". This error occurs even thought the certificate is valid. It almost looks like the URL isn't respecing the redirect from the server.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there a work around for it? what does this error message mean? I am trying to use a disc that came along with a book I ordered for studying. However, when I try and run it, this is the error message I receive. "You can't open the application Start.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." Anything I can do to fix this and make it work?????

I installed a cd and when I try to open the application a message appears: "You can't open the application TOEFL.osx because PowerPC applications are no longer supported". I also tried installing it in Windows (Parallels) but couldn't find the .exe file, which appears in other computers with another version of windows. Could somebody help me please?
MacBook ProPower PC applications will not run in OS newer than 10.6.

Unable to uninstall pre-installed applications aft...
I'm unable to uninstall pre-installed applications after updated to Belle in N8, e.g. CNN, E!, KL traffic, Movie Teasers, Nat Geo, etc.
I noticed that it looks like those app with folder icon in application manager does not support to manual uninstall by user. (folder icon indicates pre-installed app??)
Application manager only prompt message : "Removing cancelled", and unable to uninstall these apps. Anyone facing this & is there any solution for this?

I need to remove some unwanted pre-installed applications to optimize my N8 to run smooth without lag. My N8 have some lagging when playing video, when access cuztomized folder via shortcut at homescreen (it take times to display those app in folder & this caused me launch wrong app very often), when access app via shortcut at homescreen (sometime need to press it twice to launch app, dont know why).
I can free up total 6.651Mb in my N8, if it is allowed to remove these unnecessary pre-installed app. This can speed up much more faster for N8.
Dont understand why those pre-installed applications cant be remove since they are unnecessary app & not holding the main/ must have feature in N8. I can understand some pre-installed app such as Ovi, Social that act as main/ must have feature in N8 to let user download app / social networking, but why those unnecessary app cant be remove?
Can give us some clues that why these pre-installed app cant be remove?
Can this be fixed in next firmware update?

Is there a Apple tool to check THe installed applications by upgrading to os X Mavericks?
I like to know the following:
- Are there issues I have to know when I decide to upgrade too OS X Mavericks?

Uninstalled software deployed by SCCM still remains in Installed Applications

I noticed when we manually uninstalled a software which was deployed via SCCM, in Software Center, under Installed Applications, the software is still listed as installed there.
I know the only way to make the software unlisted under Software Center is to remove the software deployment on the Primary Site Server, refresh the client policy and the software will disappear from the Software Center, but that means it will disappear for
all the other computers which will need the software as well. I don't think this is a workable solution.
Possible to share if the uninstalled software will automatically disappear from the Installed Application to Available Application? If yes, how long would it take, does it depend on the next cycle where the SCCM client get new policies from the Primary Site
server?
The reason why I am asking this is because it might confuse the end user.
User: I thought you have uninstalled the software!
IT: Yes we did
User: Then why is it still listed under Installed Application in Software Center. It is bugging me! You didn't do your job.

You could check AppEnforce.log and CIAgent.log to confirm the current state for this application after running the Application Deployment Eval Cycle.
1. Find the ScopeID of the application in AppEnforce.log.

Mail application in osx 10.6 is damaged
Hello,
what has happen is, that my girlfriend went into my mail. And to not leave marks, she tried to delete the history in finder about visting my mail.
She tried to delete the mail application, and while being in the trash, she couldnt delete since the mail app still was in use. So se choosed to put it back and restart the computer..
Now the problem is, that everytime I try to open the mail application, it says mail application in osx is damaged..
What ive tried.
Verify permission and repair them NO-GO
Deleted the envelope index file and restarted NO-GO
What can I try more?

Here's what I've done.I've Installed a fresh OSX 10.8.2 after checking the HD's integrity & after fixing all permissions.
Here are the results: The crashes have stopped but when I download a disk image app, I randomly get a checksum error when I try to open it. Also, I still got a 103 error after using the App Store to update my iTunes.
I bet that error 103 that one encounters by an app that has been downloaded from the App Store means a checksum error. -
I have a MacBook running OSX 5.8. I deleted the Mail application, because idiot.
I want to reinstall it BUT the Install disk has OSX Version 5.5, so when I try and install from here it won't as there is a more recent version of OSX on teh computer. I don't want to go backwards to 10.5, I want to keep 10.5.8 and just add Mail.

My TaskSequence aborts prior to installing applications
Hi guys, so I've been using a task sequence that lets the user pick and install applications from a list.
For halv a year now without any issues.
a few days ago I upgraded the server from SP1 to R2, I thought that everything was now set as it was suppose to..
but apperently its not. Cause my task sequence aborts.
Right after installing drivers, it restarts then goes to windows.. it leaves this folder behind
C:\_SMSTasksequence - filled with stuff in it. furthermore no applications are installed.
I googled the folder cause I had never seen it before and its clear this is still here because the task sequence aborts unexpectedly
As the task sequence is completely identical to the one before I upgraded to R2, I don't understand whats wrong.

Whats really weird about these 2 applications is, that they aren't deployed to the variable..
They are however deployed to the collection the device is placed in.
