Understanding the limitations of my hardware before Snow Leopard upgrade

Hi all,
I am considering upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I wanted to find out more about how much I would benefit from the upgrade generally and specifically in terms of 64bit.
I have a 20" iMac purchased on 16th October 2006. (it is the best piece of technology I have EVER owned (closed followed by my Honda VFR800!), I love it - sorry couldn't help myself...)
It has the following configuration:
0010 Z0DH IMAC 20/2.16/SD CTO
With the following configuration:
Processor2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics Memory256MB VRAM
Memory2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
Hard Drive 500GB Serial ATA Drive
Optical DriveSuperDrive 8X (DVDR-DL/CD-RW)
Modem NO MODEM
Apple Software Solutions None
MAC OS LanguageKYBD/MSE/MAC OS KIT-GBR
Country Kit and BT/APCountry Kit-GBR
I briefly read about EFI Firmware, 32/64bit Kernals etc etc, but got a bit lost TBH.
I really just want to know, with my hardware, what benefits can I expect to enjoy and what 'features' or 'advantages' of upgrading to snow leopard will I be missing out on.
Thanks in advance, Chris

<<<At some point early next year, I will be buying a MacBook of some description to take abroad when I go on photography holidays. Not sure yet if I will go for new, refurbished or used - but there is a good chance it will have SL on. Perhaps then would be a good time to upgrade the iMac in line with the laptop>>>
I have one of the first white Macbooks, and recently got the brand new 13" Macbook Pro. The improvement is amazing. Dramatically longer battery life (still over half left after using it for much of a five hour flight), rock solid construction, and even running intense software such as video rendering it stays cool and the fan does not get noisy. If your camera uses SD cards, the built-in slot will be a big plus for you, and also gives the option of using a big SDHC card as your backup device on trips. (I chose instead to get a pocket size 500 GB USB drive, which holds both Time Machine and Super Duper backups very nicely). If you get this computer, look seriously at making it your main machine and get a good external monitor for it rather than upgrading the iMac. But be sure to order it with 4GB of RAM and at least 250 GB internal drive, so it will last for a while without further upgrades.
Of course this advice is based on what's available today. There's a good chance that there will be new iMacs (and iPods) before the end of this month. And maybe a little touch screen Mac.

  • Some Concerns Before Snow Leopard Upgrade

Hey. I have a white MacBook 2.2 GHz2.2, 4 GB RAM and I wanted to get any input from others with this model about any issues with the OS X 10.6. My main concerns before installation are running Photoshop CS4 and the Intel GMA X3100 performance, my external FireWire LaCie HD, my Tascam FireOne Audio Interface, HP Laserjet 1300 printer, external DELL monitor and a number of other potential glitches.
Now I realize it would be a coincidence if anyone had this exact configuration, but if anyone had problems with the software or hardware, could you let us know.
I also realize that Apple will be doing the standard OSX updates as the weeks move on to correct driver, peripherals, and 3rd party software fixes.
So should I wait, or go ahead and risk the Snow Leopard. Right now, I'll knock on wood, my MacBook and software and hardware are working together flawlessly, so I want to keep it way if possible.
    Thanks Steve

Hey Jason and responders. I installed the OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard yesterday evening and my friend picked up the last copy at out local Apple Store. The man at the desk said customers were coming in "droves" to pick up the DVD kit. He put in another order to get a case next week/ Ok, the results of the install.
First things first. I put in my latest Netflix DVD, Gia 1998 starring that living doll Angelina Jolie playing the first Vogue/Cosmo supermodel in the early 80's who was rumored the first female to die of AIDS from shooting heroin. Had to bedistracted as the install took about 40 minutes.
I spent 2 hours on backing up important files as was recommended here and the Apple Store Genius, on my external LaCie FireWire HD just in case things didn't work out. Admit, I'm a bit lax on doing backups everyday. I did a custom install that cut down the HD space such as dumped all the foreign languages, extra fonts, QT 7 and one of the printer driver check boxes. I think that got me down to about GBs.
What is interesting about the Snow Leopard installation is you just push in the DVD to mount on the desktop rather than restarting and holding the "C" key. So after the software loaded, it flashed an estimated time as 1 hour and 20 minutes!! What, no way, but then the estimated install time kept dropping to less than an hour. The meter started running, so I set my cell phone stop watch to monitor the time for installation.
So after about 40 minutes, the MacBook restarted automatically and the system was installed. I then checked HD partition 1 and noticed after the install, I had added about 7 GB of space to the HD and that was a real bonus to upgrade. Then I started opening all the Apple apps, iTunes, iMovie, etc. All was ok. The new QuickTime was a totally redesigned, a new look altogether. but it worked fine. If you already have QT 7 Pro, you have to be sure and click the QT7 box or the new QT will overwrite it.
Next I clicked some 3rd party apps and a box popped up and asked if I wanted to install Rosetta which I was not familiar with, but I checked the box and it does online and automatically opens those apps. One example was Photoshop CS2, it has to have Rosetta to open it. I tried to open Toast 6 Lite that I prefer to burn CD's and that won't work open anymore after the upgrade.
Next I opened Photoshop CS4 and Bridge CS4 ver3. and some large images and I can report that Photoshop and Bridge are much faster. I had some Open GL issues before, especially with compatibility with the older
Intel GMA X3100: graphics card. Before I had to disable Open GL in PS preferences, but now with Snow Leopard PS CS4 works perfectly with Open GL enabled and the pen tool is back to normal. In fact before the upgrade, I was using the PenTool in CS2 to do all selections because it worked fine. But I wanted to use the new Open GL functions such as the new Rotate function, the smooth zoom and the Hand tool function. The only thing that was problematic in CS4 before Snow Leopard was the Pen Tool and Lasso. Now all is well I hope.
Online function is fine with our AT&T DSL and Mail had to be updated. My DELL monitor works fine as usual and my LaCie FireWire HD mounts instantly and reads and writes fine. I am a pro keyboard player and have not tested the MacBook with the Tascam FireOne or the M-Audio UNO MIDI cable, but GarageBand works fine. Also, I haven't hooked the USB cable in our HP LaserJet 1300, so I'll be testing those this afternoon. I'm hoping those functions will work. My Wacom CTE-440 tablet works fine with the latest driver.
I then ran the Monolingual App and dumped 412 MB of foreign languages and that got back some HD space. I dumped foreign language and duplicate fonts in FontBook and closed the ones I don't need or use to help a faster start up.
For me, just to get the performance and Open GL functions to work OK in PS CS4 was worth the $29 Snow Leopard kit. I have not had time to check out my USB CF card reader yet, but I'm sure it will mount ok.
So far, so good and I will update my experience after further tests for analysis.

  • CAN'T SEE SHARED FOLDERS FROM THE PC ON MY MAC SINCE  SNOW LEOPARD UPGRADE

HELP! Ever since I've installed Snow Leopard on my iMac, I don't see my folders I selected for sharing from the Microsoft PC computer in my network anymore. I can't seem to locate anything. However the PC is able to see the folders from my iMac. If anyone has solutions to this problem, your help would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Pat

Your problem is probably the same one I described in my thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133962&tstart=0
The problem in my case, seems to be that the SL mac is not setting itself as the master browser, so when a Windows PC is switched on, it doesn't update that computer in the finder sidebar.
You can see if this is the case, by opening terminal, and typing:
    nmblookup -M -- -
If it comes back with "name_query failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01" then you've got the same problem as me. With Leopard, my mac would report back as the master browser.
It's got nothing to do with the firewall (I've tried turning mine off ,to no avail). Also, my workgroup is correct, and smb sharing is turned on for the user.

  • I need to update my operating system from 10.5.8 to 10.6, I believe its the one before snow leopard and is just called leopard.

i need to update my operating system from 10.5.8 to 10.6 on my mac mini, I believe its the one before snow leopard and is just called leopard.

You seem to have your OS's confused.   Your profile says 10.6 but you are asking to update from 10.5.8.
10.5.8 is Leopard.   It is also the highest level of Leopard you can achieve.
10.6.(x) is Snow Leopard.   And 10.6.8 is the highest level you can achieve.
If you have 10.6 then all you will need to do is download and apply the combo updater.
If you have 10.5.8, then you will need to review the machine ... Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -Read the Technical Specifications
Subject the machine will take it, you will then need to buy Snow Leopard from your National on-line Apple store.
Before you start upgrading, back up your files.   If you are unsure how best to do this, the following link is hugely informative.   Most commonly used backup methods: Apple Support Communities
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard, your upgrade will take you to 10.6.3 and you then will need to apply the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
and follow with software updates to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.
This will give you the best and highest level includine the App Store.
    Good luck.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • Installing Leopard server on the servers that only come with Snow Leopard

Has anyone ever "downgrade" - installing Leopard server on the servers that only come with Snow Leopard installer disc??? Is there anything special involved?? Or can I just pop in a Leopard Server installation disc from previous generation servers and procede?? These servers are going to be a part of Xsan. And with my previous horrible experience with Snow Leopard and Xsan, I am really trying to avoid going through that again... Thank you!

The general answer is yes. But the conditional answer is that you must have the original installation media from the Xserve model before it started shipping Snow Leopard exclusively. This means you would need to have bought an Xserve as recently as December to have the combo OS pack as I believe Apple stopped shipping Leopard around early January (although that might be on BTO models so if you got one from the channel it may still have the original media kit). You need to be mindful of the machine's Boot ROM version. The change of one digit can cause some issues with older installation media.
If you don't have recent media kits, you "should" be able to construct a functional OS by building on other hardware and patching up to 10.5.8. Then cloning it to the new unit.
And, you've peaked my interest. What specific issue have you had with 10.6 and Xsan?
    Hope this helps

  • Am using Macbook pro mid 2010 running on OSX 10.9.5. It does not read my old Seagate back up plus ITB ext hard disk which opens and works on snow leopard. The back ups were made on snow leopard and mountain lion. How do I make it work on Mavericks?

I have been making back ups on a Seagate Back up plus drive on a macbook pro running on Mountain lion. Sadly the mac was stolen and all I had was the seagate back up. I tried opening it on my old iMac running on snow leopard and after several visits to this forum managed to open it. The data was safe and sound. Now I have received a hand me down macbook pro which runs on osx 10.9.5. I'm assuming there is a compatability issue as the drive does not come on at all when I hook it up to the usb port. I checked the seagate drive once again on the imac and its light came on on that system. Then I suspected there may be a problem with this macbook pro usb port. But it seemed to work fine when i hooked my camera cord into it. Is it that I must reinstall mavericks. In which case how do I back up before reformatting or reinstalling. BTW I did the command+ R thingy and repaired my internal Hard disc which was showing errors. What do I do next, your help is most appreciated if you have had a similar problem.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

  • Has anyone found a solution for fixing the dvd reading problems after installing snow leopard?

I installed snow leopard on my macpro tower and my dvd player will not read dvds. My archived dvd all come up blank but on my laptop their fine. All my other dvds are just spit out. I have seen hundreds of post about this in the forums but I haven't come across a solution. Apple told me they have never come across this issue which is disturbing to say the least.

    Leroydouglas
Thanks, I did see that thread and way too many others like it. My drive was working fine up to the minute I installed snow leopard and now I can't read all my archived dvds of the last 5 years of my work. Nor will it read the training dvd "New" that I just bought. It also won't even read the iwork disc that came with snow leopard. Of course all these disc work fine on my other make that didn't get the snow leopard upgrade. Apple support told me they never heard of anything like this. I took it to the apple store and they think it the dvd drive itself. Please, it plays cds fine and accepts new dvd media...some. Countless people have had their drives go out right after the snow leopard install.
I'm sorry but what happens to a dvd player or what hardware problem happens to only allow a player to read a few dvds but all cds. Could someone explain to me what breaks. Apple saying I need to by a new dvd player from them is crazy. Why do I get the feeling that if I install snow leopard on my other machine that the dvd player will also break. How also can apple not have any record of this happening to others.
I work with windows machines and linux boxes and Macs and I'm sorry I trusted an upgrade to a mac os that has been around for a while. If I would have checked the forums the way I do with anything I work with I guarantee I would not have upgrade to snow leopard after seeing all the people out their with this issue. It is also shameful that apple says it has no knowledge of this problem.

Probably. Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before installing it.

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If those don't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of compressed air. Chances are that your drive has failed, join the club it's not all that uncommon. You can either have it replaced or purchase an inexpensive external drive. Don't buy the cute little Apple USB Superdrive, it won't work on macs with internal drives working or not.

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."?  If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

Haven't much problem with Airs around here, since they have a SSD they tend to be more reliable.
Perhaps it was a bad update, have you ran through this list of possible fixes?
Do as many as possible, starting with #1. Until the problem is resolved.
Use the boot 10.6 USB instead of the disk of course.
