Unexpected behavior when moving a shape & text

Any one else run into this on Mac CS6?
I've selected a shape layer and a text layer at the same time. When I move the shape layer, the text goes in unexpected directions. But when I move the text layer, the objects move as expected. Weird!
Does CC1 and CC2014 still do this?

I can replicate your behavior by selecting the text layer and the diamond layer then dragging. That's completely normal because the position parented diamond layer becomes 0,0 when parented and movement of the selected Text layer is based on the recalculated positions. When you get all layers to move together you have selected all 3 ayers. The behavior is completely normal. The only way to prevent this kind of odd movement when selecting two objects, one of which is parented to another, is to work in a square composition. If you can wrap your head around the math you'll figure out why.

  • How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?

    How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?
    I am using either of the path selection tools to select only some of the paths on the layer. I have the proper layer targeted. I have the selection too auto select option turned off.
    If another layer has a path in that area, that layer becomes auto targeted and I get the wrong path. Turning off the layer is the only way to avoid this but then I have to  turn on the layer back on between making my selection and transforming to use the other layer as guide. Is there any way to stop this auto select? Locking the other layer does not stop the auto select, just prevents editing.

    As far as i know the move tool options don't have any effect on the path selection tools.
    You might try clicking on one of the path points or on the path itself with one of path selection tools and if you want to select multiple points
    you can shift click with the Direct Selection Tool or Alt click to select the entire path.

    For either importing images or adding text, there's a magnet icon with a checkmark in the options box; tap it to disable snapping.

  • Unexpected behavior of checkbox with help text

    Hi everyone.
    I'm using a checkbox to achieve a yes/no user input and I've noticed something strange. Whenever the user clicks on the help text (label) associated with the checkbox, the help text pops up and the checkbox changes state.
    For example, if the checkbox is unchecked, if the user clicks on the label / help text, when they close the popup, the box is checked.
    It's not the end of the world or anything, but could be confusing for end users and so is undesirable. Is this a known issue? Maybe something that could be changed in a future release?
    regards,
    Kieran

  • Unexpected behavior when creating Objects in a Vector

    I have a situation where Objects in a Vector appear to be getting corrupted. The context is this: I obtain a ResultSet from a database, create a Vector of Strings for each row, and a Vector of these row vectors for the entire ResultSet. This is passed to a method where a POJO is created for each row. This method returns a Vector of these POJOs. In the Object constructor, a String array of initial values is created and also values are assigned to individual variables. Here is a snippet with the Object constructor
    public class RefAuthorItem {
         private final String refKey;
         private String authorKey, firstName, lastName, itemKey;
         private int authorPosition;
         private boolean isDeleted, isNew;
         // Keep a copy of the original values
         private final String[] oldValues;
          * The constructor for the data object item.
          * @param dataVals     a String array of the data values
          * @param isNewVal     boolean true if this is a new item, false if it is
          *                                              an existing item
         public RefAuthorItem(final String[] dataVals, final boolean isNewVal) {
              oldValues = dataVals;
              authorKey = dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_NUM];
              firstName = dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_FIRST_NAME];
              itemKey = dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_PKEY];
              lastName = dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_LAST_NAME];
              refKey = dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_REF_FKEY];
              isNew = isNewVal;
              isDeleted = false;
              // the author position integer value is used to sort the display
              authorPosition =
                        Integer.parseInt(dataVals[RefQueryBuilder.AUTH_POS]);
         }It seems the oldValues[] values should be identical to the corresponding individual variable values. When the following code is used to create the objects, they are not.
              final boolean isNew = isNewVal;
              Vector<RefAuthorItem> returnSet = new Vector<RefAuthorItem>();
              final String queryString = QueryBuilder
                   .getRefQuery(keyString, tableName);
              Vector<Vector> dataSet = QueryDB.getResultSet(queryString);
              int columnTot = dataSet.firstElement().size();
                    String[] itemVals = new String[columnTot];
              for (Iterator iter = dataSet.iterator(); iter.hasNext();) {
                   Vector element = (Vector) iter.next();
                   for (int i = 0; i < columnTot; i++) {
                        itemVals[i] = (String) element.get(i);
                   RefAuthorItem item = new RefAuthorItem(itemVals, isNew);
                   returnSet.add(item);
              }What happens is this. I returned four rows from the database and the oldValues[] array for each of the four corresponding objects contains the data from the fourth row. However, when I retrieve the corresponding individual values (e.g., authorLastName) from the Object, it is correct. I checked the object values (oldValues versus individual values retrieved via getters) right after the object is created (the line: RefAuthorItem item = new RefAuthorItem(itemVals, isNew);) and get the correct results. Also, results are correct when the itemVals constructor is moved within the loop, as below
              int columnTot = dataSet.firstElement().size();
              for (Iterator iter = dataSet.iterator(); iter.hasNext();) {
                   Vector element = (Vector) iter.next();
                   String[] itemVals = new String[columnTot];
                   for (int i = 0; i < columnTot; i++) {
                        itemVals[i] = (String) element.get(i);
                   RefAuthorItem item = new RefAuthorItem(itemVals, isNew);
                   returnSet.add(item);
              } There is a problem here. Am I missing a subtle Java issue with instantiating the String array within the loop? Or is there a problem with Vectors? Thanks!

    Dear ejp,
    In the non-working code, I rewrite the itemVals[], create a new RefAuthorItem using the itemVals[] and repeat. I checked the RefAuthorItem immediately after it was created (with println()) and the oldValues and individual String values in the object are concordant. However, after the loop is completed (all RefAuthorItems are created and added to the Vector), the oldValues[] in the objects all have the values from the last row. The individual String variables in the object all have the correct value from the ResultSet row.

  • Change Mail's behavior when moving a message?

    Hi:
    When I'm reading an email, and decide to move it (to the trash or another folder), I'd like to be automatically returned to the list of emails, not to be automatically taken to viewing the next email.
    Is there a setting that will effect this behavior?
    If not, is there an alternative app that supports it?
    Thanks!

    Thank you. I suspected as much.

  • Issue when moving between screens

    Hi All,
    Since we started working with Siebel 8.1 in SI we started having an unexpected behaviour when moving to another screen. Basically, when we log in Siebel PRM, we go to "Contact Screen Homepage View (SCW)" and search button is modified to go the Contact/ Opportunities view.
    But if we don't want to work with contacts and try to go to another Screen ("Home Page", "Opportunity" or "Messages") instead of showing the selected screen Siebel goes to the Contact/Opportunities of the first contact found.
    In case we search for a contact, go to another screen from the Contact/ Opportunities view and try to go to another screen the application works as expected.
    Did anybody have the same issue? Do you knwo what can be happening?
    thanks!

  • Slow performance when moving bunch of vector shapes

    Hi there,
    Photoshop CS6 Beta is soo slow in comparison to Photoshop CS5 when moving lots of vector layers. Check the videoa below please:
    CS6 - http://screencast.com/t/wBOzhTySdSf
    CS5 - http://screencast.com/t/ab7BDbgNxUYe
    - GPU Settings Enabled in both
    - GeForce GTX 560, latest drivers
    - i7 3,4 GHz, 16GB RAM
    Why CS6 is so slow in this situation?
    EDIT:  I found the Problem comes form the Layer Palete. Take a look how changing the tabs form Layers to Channels affect the moving performance : http://screencast.com/t/Gi01o1GzFPzJ
    This have to be fixed, as in more complex files this will be huge problem..
    Regards,
    SK

    Hi,
    Nothing peculiar at all. Normal text laters.
    Each field have subgroups with info - http://screencast.com/t/ykon4QwdBxC Overall lots of layers there, but in CS5 no problem to move them.
    Still can't understand why I can move all of these better when layer palete is not displayed.
    Test file - https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0phn6xiF-cobkc3cUViM0dSV3ktYk5Vbm5Bci1TUQ
    Please test it on CS5 (you will notice how smooth it is) and CS6 on both try to switch between layers palete and channels palete and try to move to see the difference. Move whole group named "Form",
    Please let me know if I can help with something else to define the problem.
    /I'm using Windows 7 x64, Photoshop CS6 beta x64/
    Thank you!

  • E-mail changes to unreadable text when moved to another mailbox folder

    Hi,
    when moving a correct received e-mail to another mailbox folder, the mail and the attachment will change to unreadable text and it looks like the column below.
    On my iPad and iPhone the mail and the attachment is shown correct. If I forward it to my own account again, the mail is also correct shown an my imac27, as long as it resides in the in-box.
    On the other hand, there are lots of mails+attachments with "normal" behavier when moved.
    Any idea about that?

    Since moving to Maverick and the new updated of Keynote, I have a constant problem when typing in a text box, the program crashes. Is there a bug fix for this. Drives me nuts. Like many who can type quite quickly but at secretarial level, the text box freezes, nothing works and you know what's coming...crash!
    This is most annoying. Is there bug fixes for this. Apparently I have the current updates and this problem still exists. Is it a Maverick bug or Keynote.
    Barry

    How did you install Mavericks, as an update ontop of the previous OS or did you wipe the drive and install clean?

  • Tab focus behavior when searching selected text

    In the previous versions of Firefox, when I selected some text on a webpage, right-clicked the text to get the context menu, and clicked the "Search" option (e.g. Search Google for "my text selection") the currently focused tab would stay focused and a new tab would be launched to handle the appropriate search in the background. Ever since I updated to Firefox 13, the new tab now receives focus when I do a search on selected text.
    How can I switch back to the old behavior? This change in functionality is driving me crazy. When reading a webpage, I often like to select words and phrases about which I want to learn more and launch searches to Google and/or Wikipedia via the context menu. I almost always like to finish reading the current page before going off to read the new tabs. Even if I did intend to stop reading the current page and go to the new tab, it often takes many seconds for the new tab to load and I would rather keep reading the current page and switch to the new tab manually than stare at a blank tab while I wait for it to load.
    In the "Tabs" tab of the options window, there is a checkbox for "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately." Is there anything like this for new tabs launched by a context menu search?
    Thanks!

    hey bob, you can enter '''about:config''' into the location bar of firefox, confirm the info notification (in case it shows up), search for the preference named '''browser.search.context.loadInBackground''' & toggle it to true by double-clicking it. that should bring back the old behaviour...

  • Magic Mouse randomly "micro scrolls" when moving

    I just bought a magic mouse to replace an older might mouse and it's exhibiting a new odd phenomenon. when moving around in web pages or in Mail, it occasionally scrolls a bit (~5 lines of text worth) in a window. when it does this i don't have any fingers on the touch surface (i've started to experiment to see what exactly causes this behavior) so I'm not "accidentally scrolling".
    is anyone else experiencing this same behavior?

    Ditto on the complaints. I am very frustrated. I'll be working in Aperture, for example, with an album of several hundred photos I am in the process of rating. As I go to reach for the mouse to click on a particular photo, the mouse activates a scrolling function and POOF!... I'm at the top of my photo album, forced to scroll many rows of photos to get to that one I was about to click on. Google Maps is useless as well. iTunes also sporadically scrolls through music. My productivity is noticeably hindered by this phenomenon. As a result, I find myself grabbing the mouse like a fragile egg- just on its sides to prevent accidental scrolling.

  • Trouble selecting and moving objects near text in Adobe Illustrator? Try this.

    It's been 4 years since I left Corel DRAW for Adobe Illustrator. One thing I could never get used to is the crazy way text has an impenetrable invisible sheet over it making it hard to select objects near or behind it.
    With Corel DRAW I was used to be able to select text by simply clicking on the visible area of the text. Selecting stuff behind the text by clicking between letters or right next to a decender was never a problem. But Illustrator is a different story.
    Tonight I finally found a way to make selecting text in Illustrator behave more like Corel DRAW.
    I wrote it up here: http://www.johnstanowski.com/blog/trouble-selecting-and-moving-objects-near-text-in-adobe- illustrator-try-this/
    Just thought I'd share!

    It's not spam, but thanks for assuming.
    I was up really late writing that blog post. Posting a link was the quickest way to share and be able to go to bed.
    Plus it's rather lengthy. I thought that would be rude to use an Adobe forum for my articles.
    If you saw my blog you will have seen there's not much going on there at all, and no calls to action to hire me. I don't have anything to gain by getting traffic.
    And, yeah, layers work for selecting, but that slows you down. Who would want to look away from their work to find and select a layer when they're trying to tweak positions of objects? Layers suck for selecting quickly.
    And there must be something wrong with me but I find using Type Object Selection by Path Only by itself hard to use. I'd really just like to click on the text itself rather than an invisible hairline you have to probe to find.
    Here's the post. I hope people who had trouble like me find it helpful.
    Do you have trouble selecting objects near Point Type in Adobe Illustrator? You’ve been there. You want to select an object. Problem is, it’s really close to piece of Point Type. All too often we try to select objects that wind up being unreachable because they lie too close to a piece of Point Type, which we wind up selecting instead. Luckily, after years of angst, I discovered a solution.
    Point Type in Adobe Illustrator is funny. There’s this invisible “shield” around it. This shield is much larger (at least it seems that way) than the text itself. It prevents you from selecting objects behind text by clicking between letter and words. This shield is particularly meddlesome with lowercase letters and decenders because we think surely we can click on that blue box (or whatever) because it seems far enough away from that Point Type. But the lowercase “g” in the Point Type’s territory.
    Okay, now that we know we’re talking about the same thing, let’s move on to the solutions.
    Step 1. Check ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ in Preferences
    You’ll find this option in Preferences/Type. Click it and that nasty text shield goes away. But there’s a price to pay. With this option activated, the only way you can select your text is by clicking on the text path, a super, tiny, thin baseline thingy under all the letters, but above decenders. It’s really hard to grab. To do it right you need to slowly approach the text path with your cursor. When you’re right over it, Illustrator will let you know by adding a small black square to your cursor. Now, you can click, hold and move your text. But this workflow can really slow you down and break your rhythm, maybe even more so with it turned off.
    Step 2. Add the ‘Outline Object’ Effect
    Select your Point Type and, from under the Effects Menu/Path/, select Outline Object. This effect does something really sweet to text in Illustrator: it lets your Point Type objects be treated as if their were converted to Outlines. You can still edit the text, but as far as selecting it, Illustrator now considers it outlines and shapes instead of a text object. Basically, it now considers the Path of the text to be the text itself! Now, since we’ve already checked ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ we can now click on the text to select it. Just the text. Not the baseline, not the wacky invisible shield surrounding it.
    And now… you can select things behind the text by clicking between words and letters. And the ONLY way to select Point Type is to click on the visible parts of the text itself! Problem solved.
    Potential Problem:
    Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Let’s say you have some Point Type set in a very light face and it’s pretty small or you’re zoomed way out. Selecting that text could be a problem since you have to actually click on the text itself. Actually it isn’t that hard, it may just require an extra click to grab it. If you have a set of smaller, light-faced bits of text, you can elect to just not apply the Outline Object effect to these. They’ll get their ‘shield’ back and be easier to click on. And since they’re so small, they don’t pose a problem with selecting things behind them anyway.
    Applying this technique to your old files
    Now that you’ve learned this awesome new way to work around type in Illustrator, you may be anxious to open yesterday’s project and get back to work. But you may be not be looking forward to applying the Outline Object effect to each and every piece of type. For this you can use Illustrator’s “Select Same” feature. Select one piece of text. Then from the Select Menu click on Object/Text Objects. Now ALL of your text objects will be selected, and you can apply the Outline Object effect to all of them at once!
    That’s it. If you build ads or work with a lot of type in Illustrator, you’re about to be able to work a lot faster… and happier.
