Unicode font usage with jTabbedPane

Hey there
I faced a problem when I use Unicode characters on JTabbedPane
the font is amharic power geez unicode1 and it works fine with jLabel and partially with jButtons ( except trying to set text at run time )
The problem with jTabbedpane is that when I change its tab title property the other tabs disappear ( am using netbeans 5.5 )

To me, it looks as if your problem is that you're only calling setFont on "this".
That's only going to set it for the top level frame, and doesn't always do it for every individual component. The easy way to get around this is to go berserk with the setFont call. Set it on anything (heck, set it on your dog if it makes you feel any better)! ;D
The slightly harder but smarter way to do this is to write a recursive function that drills down your component list.
public void setFontRecursively(Font myFont, Component comp) {
   comp.setFont(myFont);
   if (comp instanceof Container) {
      Component[] childComps = ((Container)comp).getComponents();
      if (childComps != null) {
         for (int i=0; i < childComps.length; i++) {
            setFontRecursively(myFont, childComps);
That should basically cover anything bar popup menus and drop-down submenus. You have to recall this as they appear, or they don't get the font straight off.
Hope that helps!

  • Need help with Tamil unicode fonts in Macbook OSX 10.6.7

    I am really desperate for some help figuring out my Tamil unicode font problem. With great difficulty I got all these fonts set up on my previous ibook G4. When that computer died in the fall I got this new Macbook, and had all my data brought from the old computer to the new one. Fonts were working great, as before. Well recently I had a hard drive failure on my new Macbook (OSX 10.6.7). I now have a new hard drive, and I brought over all my data from an external hard drive using Time Machine. Everything appeared to be working great....except the Tamil fonts. Previously I was using Murasu Anjal unicode font which allowed me to type in Tamil font and view Tamil on webpages, no problem. I understand that Snow Leopard has Tamil font support (including Anjal), so I am confused as to why they were working before but are not working now-especially because on my husband's Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6.5) you can see Tamil fonts on webpages and he has no special Tamil font installed whatsoever. For me the only thing visible is boxes. I am in the midst of finishing up a dissertation which is really dependent on being able to read and write in Tamil fonts. I am desperate to get this fixed but just cannot seem to figure it out. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice!!! Thanks so much!!!

    I've always used the Anjal keyboard with no problem...at least there was no problem before my MacBook hard drive had to be replaced, with a newer operating system, as I had mentioned previously. When I type in Pages, NeoOffice or TextEdit, the results are the same. Many of the characters show up, but vowel combinations--especially the "o" or "u" vowels--show up incorrectly or are unintelligible. Strangely, typing in Tamil font (using Anjal keyboard) in internet searches works perfectly, but ONLY in Firefox (?) NOT in the Safari browser. Prior to re-installing the InaiMathi font, which had seemingly vanished with the transfer of my data to the new hard drive, I was unable to type Tamil anywhere, not even in Firefox. Now it works only in Firefox. For example, if I were to type in Tamil in this window, it works fine: தமிழ் நாடு.
    Being able to do Tamil searches in Firefox as I had previously is really a major boon for me, but of course I'd love to be able to produce Tamil text, especially as I am about to embark on a 6 month research jaunt to South Asia.
    Many thanks for all your help thus far, and for any further advice you might have.

  • IOS6 JERKY SCROLLING, BROWSING WITH UNICODE FONTS

    Unicode font have been used for many years.
    We use Burmese Unicode fonts name Zawgyi Unicode font to view our language on web.
    We use special apps (Mogok, Myanmar Browser lite) for viewing on iPhone and iPad as this font is not embeded.
    They are OK to view all our language sites without problems prior iOS 6.
    Now with iOS6, the problem comes.
    Safari engine rendering for web pages causes those apps frozen.
    If we type email with this unicode font, it is frozen.
    Frozen means it freezes for 10 seconds on every action triggered from your touch.
    Imagine how annoying!
    Not even that font, Apple approved Myanmar Unicode font also have the same issue.
    I have tested it already.
    Here is the web link (http://chawsufoodfriends.blogspot.com) you can browse on iOS Safari and you won't see the language display but you will see what happening. If you download the apps that I have mentioned, you will be able to view the fonts.
    I can send you test email and see the problem in Mail App as well.
    This is not only happening on my iPhone and iPad...I have called my friends, and all have the same issue.
    So, it is clearly A BIG BUG.
    I love Apple products. But now I am very very frustrated how they manage, how they release products and softwares.
    I have never seen it is released recklessly.
    I don't find "Attention to Detail" anymore.
    We are now holding back and reviewing for our next gadgets.. Thank you Apple.

    I have a correspondence with a gentleman from Apple ( I would think he is from the developement team) and he said "I just saw your email with the sample text and confirmed that there is a problem reading the text. I will look into it and file the appropriate defect report."
    So now our case is noticed and it will be taken care of appropriately.
    Let's cross our fingers and see the wonderful result on the next update.
    PS. Whoever read this thread and if you are concerned with Burmese fonts problems, please submit bugreport at Apple.
    https://bugreport.apple.com/
    If you need any assistance on submitting report, let me know. we will help you out on this forum.
    Or you can find some discussion at this thread.
    The more we submit bug report, the more it will be noticed by Apple Developers and it would be taken care of soon.
    We will be very much appreciate with your help.
    Thanks

  • Using Sinhala Unicode Fonts with Indesign

    Hello,
    We are having trouble using  Sinhala Unicode Font with Indesign. We require this to covert content to the EPUB format.
    Siyabas - how to install Sinhala Unicode
    Do you know if there is a  Plug-in for the Sinhala Unicode Font? Or is there someone in the community working on it?
    Thank you.

    Hi, Thanks for your post. We want to convert to reflow able text, which can include illustrations (For Example - Children's Books).
    We tried FM Abbhaya Font as it is easy to read and using a traditional Sinhala keyboard input method.
    For Some reason we cannot get this input to be recognized by Adobe Indesign, to convert to an Epub format.
    We tried the open font on Windows, but it means selecting each character from a table. As a small publisher it is not practical.
    In fact the ideal path for us will be to convert our printed books to Epubs using OCR.
    Any thoughts on that? Thanks for your time.

    Sochinda  forget about what K wrote. You can not use the crviewer.dll (also known as active X viewer) - of any version in any version of .NET.
    1) It is not supported - in any and all versions of CR
    2) With some versions of CR, you are breaking your license agreement; CR 9.2, 10.2, 10.5, CRVS2010 (13.0)

  • Modified Keyboard Layout (Unicode) not useable with different fonts

    Hi,
    I have created a customized unicode keyboard layout with german basic layout and polish characters supplied with the "Alt" key. I activated the layout and was able to type in most of the OSx applications BUT only with fonts Times New Roman and Arial. When I switched to a differnet font and typed normal chars they were displayed in the font style selected. When I typed the Polish characters defined via ALT + A for example, these chars were displayed in TimesNew Roman, not in the selected font e.g. comic mt...
    this was the case in ms office apps as well as in Apple Mail or other apps.
    Please help me out. I need a functional basic German keyboard layout with aditional keys defined under ALT+ somewthat. How can I get this stuff working, maybe without using Unicode? Do I have to modify the generic .RSC files with ResEdit, and does somebody have an Idea how to do this.
    Basically I need German keyboard with the mentioned addition of some polish keystrokes.
    Many thanks in advance
    thomas

    There is nothing wrong with your keyboard. Your problem is probably caused by the fact that not every font has the characters needed for Polish. Just open up Character Palette, go to 0142, and look in the Font Variation panel. That will show you the fonts that do have the slashed l, for example. They should all work fine, except in Appleworks and Word X, which cannot do Unicode.

  • Good word processing software with unicode font support?

    If this is the wrong place, apols and please redirect me.
    I stopped using MS Word v.x (2001) as it doesn't support Unicode fonts, which I absolutely need. I assume the latest Word/Office for Mac supports Unicode fonts (?), but it's too expensive, and also I always found that Word crashed a lot and I don't want to support Microsoft.
    I've been using the cheap Mellel for several months. I applaud its producers, but it's far too lacking in features (e.g. no alphabetical sorting) and even after months of use is very counter-intuitive.
    Can anyone recommend a good all-round word processor for Leopard on a Macbook Pro which is stable, supports unicode fonts, doesn't break the bank, and has comparable features to MS Word but preferably isn't MS Word?

    Of all the word processors you are likely to come across, I think only Word X and AppleWorks, both essentially obsolete, do not support Unicode. Here is a list with summary info on each app that may be helpful:

  • Bengali Unicode fonts in InDesign CS6

    Dear InDesign Gurus,
    How do I type using "Bengali" (Unicode) fonts in InDesign CS6?  I've tried to copy/paste the text from an existing word document on to an InDesign document, but it shows up with square blocks!   I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64Bit OS.
    Is this even possible?  Would someone please provide me some detail steps?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Simon

    Cyndee,
    As I said, I'm fairly new in ID, would you kindly tell me the steps so that I know what to do?
    Ellis,
    I am working with a ID Magazine template.  Obviously the template has blocks and pre-written text inside those blocks.  If I try to delete the text (without deleting the BOX + contents within) and paste the Bengali text from some other document, some of the characters do not stay in place.  Whereas, if I just create a text box and paste the text inside the new box, texts show properly.
    So my question to you Gurus is... how can keep the template I'm using and just replace the text within text box and save time.   Would someone plz guide me?
    Thanks for your professional help!

  • Unicode Font in a PDF report (iTextSharp)

    I tried to use unicode font  (Arial Unicode MS - arialuni.ttf) in a PDF document generated with iTextSharp.  I am able to create the PDF document with this font.
    In the  iTextSharp documentation, we are suppose to be able to send unicode, but I don't understand how to do this in Labview.
    I read A List of Tips and Tools for using Unicode in LabVIEW but I am stuck.  Any ideas?

    I don’t have the new version in my actual computer. I will go by memory.
    1)      I found no way to connect a LabVIEW string to an Unicode iTextSharp phrase or paragraph;
    2)      The only way I found is to add a .NET string (mscorlib.system.string --> Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane) to an iTextSharp phrase or paragraph.
    3)      You construct this .NET string with an array of UTF16.
    To construct the U16[ ]:
    1)    I wrote the text in NotePad (Unicode).
    2)    I copy the string in a LabVIEW string (not Unicode);
    3)    I remove the BOM;
    4)    I swap the bytes (2 bytes by to 2 bytes) and I typecast in U16.

  • Prs-t1 is not properly rendering indic unicode fonts. Works fine in prs-t2

    Hi
    prs-t1 is not properly rendering indic unicode fonts (Hindi, Telugu etc).  Same epub works fine in prs-t2 and it renders the fonts properly.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

     Hi
    “Ind” had emailed me, a file with a font issue.
    On his first post, he wrote: “…prs-t1 is not properly rendering indic unicode fonts (Hindi, Telugu etc).  Same epub works fine in prs-t2 and it renders the fonts properly…”
    Even I had the same results.
    Only ReaderforPC and PRS-T1 had such font issue.
    All other softwares (MS Word, MS Notepad, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Sigil, etc) and PRS-T2 are viewing Indic Unicode fonts correctly.
    I had copied the “defective” text from ReaderforPC and pasted it on MS Word. But surprise! The same text on MS Word had no font issue anymore!!!!
    That means: “the file is without font issue!"
    The issue is on "Reader for PC" software and on PRS-T1’s firmware!
    Probable solutions.
    For Sony Software Developers:
    Correct ReaderforPC software.
    Correct PRS-T1 firmware.
    For all other in order to read ebooks with Indic Unicode fonts (Hindi, Telugu, etc.):
    Use Sony PRS-T2/T3 Reader Device
    On PC use:
    --Adobe Digital Editions http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html (to read ebooks with Adobe DRM or DRM-free)
    --Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ to read DRM-free ebooks
    --Sigil (free epub editor) http://code.google.com/p/sigil/  to modify ebooks (only DRM-free ebooks)
    -- or other software
    Thanks “ind” for the feedback

  • Can't use Cambodian unicode font

    I tried to create a new page in Dreamweaver 8 and attempting
    to use Cambodian (Khmer) unicode font, but it does not show all the
    upper and lower script. Even though I changed the New Document page
    and it still does the same. Anyone has any idea?

    When I try to use Symbol font and display it in
    JLabel, it show a square.
    i have read the article written by John O'Conner
    http://www.joconner.com/javai18n/articles/TextDisplay.htm.
    Much of that article is now incorrect or unnecessary for JDK 1.5. Because 1.5 knows how to find a font for the character you're trying to display, you should be able to set your label font to any logical font, and the JRE should find a substitute font if necessary that can display the character.
    I'll give your code a try and will post results...is the code you've posted the code I should actually experiment with? It seems like you should want to display something different than 0x0065.
    Your other questions:
    0x0021 is the exclamation mark regardless of font. I see what you mean, however, since the wingdings font in charmap also says 0x0021. However, that mapping is obviously not a Unicode code point mapping.
    I looked in the Misc. Symbols and Dingbats section of Uncode. A few characters might be a reasonable substitution for the pencil character you want:
    0x270E (LOWER RIGHT PENCIL)
    0x270F (PENCIL)
    0x2710 (UPPER RIGHT PENCIL)
    I didn't see any mirror images of these, ie LOWER LEFT PENCIL and UPPER LEFT PENCIL, although I admit that I didn't look closely.
    Maybe one of these will work for you instead of the Wingdings 0x21 character you mentioned.

              jlbl.setFont(fontSymbol);
              jlbl.setText( new Character(c).toString() );1) I can't display any Wingdings font , any expert can help on this?
    2) what is the difference between 0021(character code for Arial font) and 0x21(character code for Wingdings font) shown in character map?

  • Font Prints With Jagged Edges

    Okay, I have a document in which I used a font that I downloaded for free (yeah, I know*) and which has no italics set. After I had used it and gotten the work approved, I was asked to italicize a web address that was set in this font. So, I skewed it using the Indesign character pallette. I had heard before that this sometimes causes problems on the print side, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, when the samples came back the font edges were bumpy, almost like noise in a raster image. So, for my next magical trick I selected that text and converted it to outlines. This produced pretty much the exact same result.
    One last piece of weirdness: To work around the problem for now, we ditched the italics altogether. Now I get an e-mail telling me that even the unaltered font "still doesn't look terrific". Going to see for myself now.
    My questions are: What causes this? Why didn't the edges get smoother when converted to vector curves? Does a better solution exist (other than the obvious one of using a different font)? Any insight will be appreciated.
    * I work for a State agency and we have limited resources, so purchasing a decent selection of fonts isn't an option. I found a couple of sites that offer many decorative fonts for download and have been using them without an issue for a couple of years now. I'm sure they're not Adobe quality, but they've worked fine until now.

    >You don't have to buy Adobe. But free is worth what you pay for it...
    I didn't mean to imply that Adobe was the only source of quality fonts. I buy from other foundries as well, but I think Adobe has more inexpensive options than many of the other big names (though not all quality fonts come from big names, either).
    But you DO get a bunch of very fine, and classic, Adobe fonts FREE with InDesign, and even more if you bought the whole suite. :)
    I have no idea what the free font in question is, but unless it was something in a wild display face (which seems pretty unlikely, given the usage description), there should be no problem finding a suitable replacement in what came with the software.
