What's the best Grayscale profile to use... for offset printing?
That's like asking "how big is a bread box?" For a sheetfed press on caoted stock I tend to use Dot Gain 20%, but you should probably ask the printer.
You can create a custom gray profile using the Black Ink from your CMYK profile that you would use for that press for grayscale conversions in Photoshop, and ID will give you a better output preview.  Edit Color Settings... and in the grayscale dropdown choose "Load Gray" then pick your CMYK profile from the open dialog (you may have to browse to find it). Save the settings file. Bad news is I don't know how to get that converted into a custom ICC profile that you can load and choose in ID. Perhaps Rob knows and will see this.

  • SelectToolByName intermittently crashes (Illustrator CS6, OSX)

    Hi,
I've been writing some tool switching code, and have been having an issue using Illustrator CS6 (16.0.4) on OSX (using either mountain lion or mavericks) where setting SetSelectedToolByName eventually crashes due to an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error, even when passing in basic string constants.
Here's a simple example based on the Annotator sample code, where I setup a thread to periodically switch between two common tools after selecting the Annotator tool:
Usually, this code will work X number of iterations before crashing, where X can be anywhere from 15 to 200 or 750ish or not at all. This ultimately feels like a  multi-threaded race condition at work.
    So what's the stacktrace?
    There's three scenarios/stacktraces to show:
    1) First type of crash resulting in EXC_BAD_ACCESS error, while running Illustrator api under XCode's debugger. This is all the same state of the code for the screenshots below when the breakpoint hits.
full-size images also available at: http://imgur.com/a/Iy6tF
    2) Second type of crash is similar, but giving a SIGABRT message:
full-size images also available at: http://imgur.com/a/ERCCD
    3) While this sample code doesn't seem to generate an adobe 'bug report' (it just hard-crashes with no 'report crash to adobe' dialog), my main app that uses SetSelectedToolByName has generated the following crash log:

I'd love to hear a response from Adobe on this. It's been causing me weeks of frustration.

    Another update,
I'm also observing the same crash using Illustrator CC, and using the other method of setting tools by first acquiring a tool handle.
Here's the code that uses the handles instead, similar  to other code found in the samplecode folder:
...and here's the first type of crash observed:
    ...and the second type:

  • Firefox crashes when exiting on i7-920, OSX-10.7.2 Lion Fully updated

This happened before.. i used app zapper to remove FF8, then reinstalled FF 7.01.. no issues with 7.01. Verified Addons with Addon checker (everything up to date)
Used update channel to install FF8 ... Still Crashing when exiting Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Games.
Hardware info... i7-920, 6GB Ram, 1TB HD, Nvidia Graphics. OSX-10.7.2 Lion Fully updated
BTW Appzapper removed everything including profile... ITS NOT PROFILE RELATED.
Still Happens in Safe Mode... Going Back to 7.01 after AppZapping 8.0 .
Must be Related to some change in LION because FF8 works fine on Snow 10.6.8. Perhaps Permissions need to be modified in the Script for FF8, Perhaps Plugin related. Not Sure, but 7.01 Works without Crashing.

On Mac systems with Java version "1.6.0_29" (Java SE 6 Update 29), Firefox 8 will crash after running a Java applet when closing the tab or hitting the back button. This is a new crash that only occurs in Firefox 8 (or above) and is being investigated ([https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700835 bug 700835]).

Upgraded from osx snow leopard to lion and still no iCloud settings in System Preferences, why?

I have the exact same issue, and no Profiles for me under System. My system was upgraded from 10.6 as soon as Lion came out and I've never had the icon.
I have had iCloud set up by creating an account within Mail, Contacts & Calendars - but in this setup my Mobile Documents folder, my iCloud "Documents and Data", never synchronized with my other devices. That is why I began wondering why I don't have the iCon as I have seen other Macs that came with 10.7 installed factory.

How do I uninstall Photoshop CS6 EXTENDED - I did not ask for it and I do not want it

Well, you could if your serial number was for a Mac. The serial numbers are platform specific (Mac/Win).
With that issue not being considered, you would "deactivate" on one of your previous computers (as you mentioned), then install on another.

  • Canon 860 Series (Pixma) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
    Problem:
    - New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
    - When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
    - The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
    Solution:
    1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.
Canon 860 Series Drivers & Software  for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion:
The base software and drivers needed for using Canon 860 Series on Mac OS X 10.8 (USB) are
    1 Printer Driver
(Canon MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (03-Aug-2012))
    2 Scanner Driver
(Canon MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.4a (03-Aug-2012))
    3 Network Tool
(Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac (27-Dec-2012)
Canon Software for using advanced printing and scanning functions (while connected to network)
    4 Solution Menu
    (Canon Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.1 (27-Jul-2012 ))
    5 MP Navigator EX
(Canon MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 (02-Auf-2012))
    6 Easy-PhotoPrint EX
    (Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 4.1.6 (21-Jan-2013 ))
Canon Support (HK) – check your local site

Select Product and drivers from support site eg http://support-hk.canon-asia.com/
    1. Choose a product category
    Multifunctional Printers
    2. Choose a product series
      Pixma
    3. Choose a product model
      Pixma MX868
    4. Choose type of document
    Downloads or FAQ
If you have problems installing the software under 10.8, see the FAQ on Canon site. You will need to allow software installs from “unidentified developers by using “Control” Key or by changing your system preferences)
    2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB.  Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’).  This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
    3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list).  The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List.  It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try again

Hi, thaks for response, meant to post as a discussion (not question), wanted to save others time if they get the same problem

  • After upgrading to osx 10.9.3, my external hard drive was not able to mount, but it can be mounted without issue in osx 10.6, how do I solve it? it was formatted by disk utility.

    Hi
After upgrading to osx 10.9.3, my external hard drive was not able to mount, but it can be mounted without issue in osx 10.6, how do I solve it? it was formatted by disk utility.
    Thanks
    PT

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • I accidentally uninstalled photoshop cs6. Is there a way to reinstall it?

I noticed my Bridge was not working, because I think I accidentally deleted the icon when I was deleting images. I thought that if I uninstalled Photoshop cs6 and then reinstalled it I could get it back. I uninstalled Photoshop cs6 but now I do not know how to reinstall it?

CS6 installer download links should be on a page linked from here:

Looking to move data from OSX 9 to Mountain Lion using external hard drive?

Thanks.  I'd like to get rid of this OSX 9 after retrieving a few files.  If I wanted to erase it's hard drive before I do so, would powering off then on again and immediately start tapping the F10 button do the trick as it does with a PC?

  • CF10 on mac OSX 10.8.4 lion

    Hi,
I installed CF10 on mac using this link:
    http://iknowkungfoo.com/blog/index.cfm/2013/2/27/Installing-ColdFusion-10-on-OSX-108-Mount ain-Lion
    The CF server is working.
I was fine until the step 8 on OSX Sites.
I can see fine the file from the step 7 "http://localhost/~username/index.htm", means that apache also is working fine.
Why I cannot see the current time from "http://localhost/~username/index.cfm"?
I only see the content of the file <cfoutput>#now()#</cfoutput>
Any ideas how to fix or test this?
I will install flash builder 4.7 after to work with CF10.
    Thanks

Fixed, content of cfm file is working fine.

  • After uninstalling Premiere CS6 using the Windows uninstall programs, Premiere still appears in list

I'm trying to reinstall Premiere CS6 and I notice that according to the Creative Cloud manager, in the app list, Premiere is still listed as being installed, which is now not letting me reinstall the app.
How can I remove Premiere CS6 from this list? I used windows control panel to uninstall Premiere CS6 family and also the CC cleaner tool, but this app still appears in the CC admin app list. How can I remove this so I can reinstall?

-CC desktop lists applications as "Up to Date" when not installed

  • I uninstalled PS CS6 (non-cloud upgrade) WinXP SP3 then downloaded and reinstall failed during SetUp.exe

Review: I purchased non-CC upgrade from PS CS5>CS6 today at Adobe.com, downloaded and installed, seemed to work, but had problems after attempting ACR update that led to PS errors, so I uninstalled PS CS6 via control panel>remove>Adobe uninstaller. When I tried to reuse SetUp.exe or re-extract PS CS6 install files; all failed. Contacted support chat they said-download again that will work. That failed, too. Please advise on how to re-install PS CS6 upgrade on same machine where I removed it just hours before. OS: Win XP SP3
    Thanks, Paul

    Kglad,
Thanks for your helpful reply. I ran the cleaner, checked the log (ok), then ran installer. The installer ran (1 am) and after a brief celebration I looked and PS CS6 was not visible. It did not completely install and no PS CS6 icons were visible--I should have know something was wrong when it did not ask for serial number. I did System Restore, and just ran the CC Cleaner again (targeting PS CS6, since I believe that I need to leave the PS CS5 on the computer for the upgrade to work. Is there anything else that I may need to do to reinstall successfully? I think that the ACR I tried to install caused a problem -- can I target ACR for cleaning / removal further? I have valid serial numbers: loaded PS CS5 from box upgrade yesterday and then bought PS CS6 upgrade also yesterday. Thank you for your good ideas! Paul
