Universe - MSAS Cube

Would like to explore pros and cons for using Business Objects Universe on top of Microsoft Analysis Service Cube...?

Hi,
In XI3.x, we have done the same devlopment effort for both SAP and MSAS.
Means that we support the same capabilities for the two data sources and if we are able to create mandatory filters for SAP (a.k.a. SAP variables), we provide the same capabilities for MSAS.
Currently one of the main limitations of OLAP universes is that we have to flatten hierarchies whatever the OLAP source is.
This barrier will be rempoved in XI 4.0 where we will fully support multi-dimensional data sources: SAP and MSAS in this version.
Moreover, we will provide more capabilities in this version such as:
<li>Calculated measures
<li>Calculatesd members
<li> Named sets (server or custom)
<li>Predeifined filters including mandatory filters (SAP variables) and othe filter types
<li>Metadata and data security
Finally, the MDX generation will be more powereful with more capabilities than in XI 3.1.
The new Semantic Layer in XI4.0 will also be consumed by Crystal Reports, XCelsius. BusinessObjects Explorer is also a candidate fpr consuming the new Semantic Layer. Pioneer has also committed to consume the new Semantic Layer in a future release.
The conclusion is to use OLAP universes if you want to use Web Intalligence of MSAS.

Didier

  • Universe design for SAP BPC (MSAS cube)

During the designing of a Universe on top of a MSAS cube there is the moment I may select Dimensions & Hierarchies. Here there are ID's of my model, e.g. Accounts-Lev1, Time-Lev1, etc.
How do I get to see the descriptions of the levels in the Universe Designer?
    Screenshots:

    Hi SR,
In some way is true what you think, is important to put effort and intelligence in design very well the Bex query also the BW solution.
But the effort is not only there, you can improve that with a good Universe creating MDX Measures, changing the BW names (Dimensions and measures) for other more comprehensives for the users, change and reorder the classes and dimensions to be more close to user concept, create new hierarchies and others.
Don't forget that the Universe is a semantic layer to hide complexity and is useful for:
    -  Map complex data into familiar business terms such as products, customers, and sales.
    -  Enable simple, intuitive, and self-guided data analysis.
    -  Guarantee single version of the truth (identical results) no matter what tool is used)
    Some tips are:
You do not need a BE query for every report and you do not need a Universe for every existing BE query
Focus the implementation strategy on limiting the number of Bex queries and Universes that share common elements
Build a small set of Bex queries focusing on sharing common elements in a small number of Universes
Understand that primarily the WebI Query Panel definition influences how much data is retrieved from BW, and not the BE query design or the WebI Report layout, In some situations extremely large queries and universes can adversely affect performance
Removing / Hide Unnecessary u201CL00u201D Objects
Removing / Hide Unused or Redundant Detail Objects
Remove all prefixes « Lxx ». Copy the initial name in the Description of the object
Rename the attributes (Detail objects) when necessary : remove the suffixes when no Business signification
    Optimizing Detail Object Syntax
    I hope this help you.

  • Hierarchies on Universe on top of MSAS cube

    All,
I have created an Universe on top of a MSAS 2005 cube. I am using BOXI3.1 base version.
    1. I noticed that none of the already predefined hierarchies in the cube get automatically set as custom hierarchies in the BO Universe.
I would need to manually set the hierarchies again on the Universe. Is this working as designed or am i missing something here?

    Thanks Didier.
However if i activate the drill-down in a  webi report based on cube universe , i am unable to perform any slice/dice or drilling based on these default hierarchies.
Just to rephrase the question: the MSAS cube has these custom hierarchies which you can use through proclarity or excel..however when universe is created on top the cube..those custom hierarchies are not flowing in as a part of the creation.
Let me know if this is function as designed.

  • Parent Child [MSAS cube is not working in BO]

    Hi
Does anyone know if the BO is prepared to work with the Parent Child concept? I'm asking that because I've created a universe connected into a MSAS cube and it's not working for hierarchies designed using the parent child concept. When I include the field in the report, it return me a null value, in other words, an error, however if I remove this field the report works fine.
does anyone suffer of the same issue?
    Thx

    Hi Rody,

  • How to enforce row level security on MSAS Cube

We have to enforce row level security on MSAS Cube based on BOUSER.
We are using a security table which contains BOUSER ID and Location ID
We need help in joining the security table with MSAS Cube.
    Thanks

    HI,
I haven't worked with cubes. But the will the knowledge I have in Universe, could probably help you.
As you already have a table which maintains BOUSERID and location id, you could probably join location id with MSAS cube id.
If you don't want to use this userdefined security table, you can use the inbuilt Row level security option.
Go to Tools -> Manage access REstrcitions --> Create a new restriction --> Rows tabe ---> give a expression with BOUSER
    Hope this helps.

  • Automatic refresh of excel sheet connected to MSAS Cube

I have a requirement, we have a excel spreadsheet connected to cube on a share drive that other applications use as input feed.
Cube is refreshed daily is there a way to refresh data in the spreadsheet automatically after cube refresh?

Yes , you can set the Excel spreadsheet to refresh automatically for every X number of minutes.
Under data go to connections tab and select the usage properties and select REFRESH every check box and enter the number of minutes or so to refresh the spreadsheet automatically.
Please mark as answer, if this has helped you solve the issue.

  • MSAS OLAP Universe Pre Defined Filter

    Hi:
We have a Universe based on a MSAS cube. The cube has only three time u201Cdimensionu201D objects u2013 Year, Quarter and Month. All come across as Character data types. The Month object displays the year and the month concatenated together (2009.JUL, for example). What we need to do is to create a pre defined filter in the Universe that will always give us the data for rolling 16 months. So, for example, if we run the report in July, the data would be for April 2009 through July 2010 u2013 of course, if the report is run next month in August, the data would be for May 2009 through August 2010.  If anyone can offer any help in what the pre defined filter in the Universe would look like, that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Didier:
Thanks again for your response u2013 the revised filter works without any syntax errors.
There are two problems. Firstly, we need it to dynamically calculate the 16 month period based on the month when the query is run, instead of prompting the user to enter the ending period as it does now.
Secondly, the dates that it brings back donu2019t appear to be correct. Here is what it brings back, if July 2010 is entered for the prompt:
    2009.MAR
    2009.MAY
    2009.NOV
    2009.OCT
    2009.SEP
    2010.APR
    2010.AUG
    2010.DEC
    2010.FEB
    2010.JAN
    2010.JUL
What I would expect it to bring is the following:
    2009.APR
    2009.AUG
    2009.DEC
    2009.JUL
    2009.JUN
    2009.MAY
    2009.NOV
    2009.OCT
    2009.SEP
    2010.APR
    2010.FEB
    2010.JAN
    2010.JUL
    2010.JUN
    2010.MAR
    2010.MAY
Here is the exact Filter that I am using:
    <FILTER EXPRESSION="IIF([Time].[H1].currentmember.member_value &lt;= STRTOMEMBER(&quot;@Prompt('Select period','A','Time\Month',Mono,primary_key,Persistent)&quot;).member_value AND [Time].[H1].currentmember.member_value &gt;= STRTOMEMBER(&quot;@Prompt('Select period','A','Time\Month',Mono,primary_key,Persistent)&quot;).lag(16).member_value ,1,0)">
    <CONDITION OPERATORCONDITION="Equal"><CONSTANT CAPTION="1"></CONSTANT></CONDITION></FILTER>
Also, it does not seem to change the number of months returned even if I change the lag(16) to lag(15).
BTW, I installed the Adventure Works cube and tested the query there u2013 it works as expected when I use it there, as you had suggested in thefirst example you gave me.
Thanks again for your help with this.
    Regards,
    Nishant.

  • MSAS OLAP UNX

    Hi,
We are doing a PILOT for UNX using MSAS Cubes.
I Installed SQL Server 2008R2 on my machine and downloaded the default Adventure Works DB, DW and also the related MSAS Project which has built in cubes.
I successfully deployed the MSAS project using MS Visual Studio which has 2 cubes on to my local machine. The Database I used for this was the DW I had downloaded earlier.
Now from IDT when I am trying to connect to build a UNX on top of the default cube. I am getting the following error.
    com.businessobjects.mds.olap.protocol.xmla.internal.XMLAException: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

  • What has changed for OLAP Universe in BOXI3.1 SP2

    All,
I would like to understand what has changed in BOXI3.1 SP2 in comparison with BOXI3.1 base version for OLAP universes.
We design Universe on top of MSAS 2005 cubes and create webi reports.
Based on BOXI3.1 SP2 what's new document- the enhancements seem to affect the Universe Designer- providing a developer with more control and options.
I am interested in learning if the release has any features that improves performance of BO against MSAS cubes.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Edited by: ramaks on Dec 11, 2009 11:02 PM

    Hi,
Here is the list of feature we have added in SP2 for OLAP universes:
    <li>Definition and Where editors enabled
    <li>Prompt editor
    <li>MDX dictionary
<li>New parameters and controls at universe generation time
<li>Refresh Structure (aka Universe Update or Universe Life Cycle Management)
    <li>Universe SDK enhancements.
You will find in attachment a PDF that describes the enhancements.

  • Webi against OLAP Cubes and rowlevel security

    Hi all
    Running XI3.1, SP4. Windows
We are trying to create universes on top of OLAP cubes made in MSAS 2008, and take advantage of the rowlevel-structure that exist on the cube side.
When running a WEBI-report against the cubeuniverse, the current user logged in from InfoView should be passed to the MSAS cube. Different users will then get different results. This is our goal!!!
It works in Voyager, which runs directly at the cubes.
But is this possible, via WEBI and universes. Has anyone done this??
When creating the connection, the Authentication mode="Use SSO when refreshing the reports at runtime", looks promising.
But i get a error message, stating "DBD: Unknown error has occured when determining the ODBO connection credentials"
    All inputs are appreciated
    /Björn

    Hi all
We have configured the BOservers with SSO, using AD-Kerberos (using Tim Ziembas whitepapers). So we are using authentication=WindowsAD.
It works perfectly for the end-users. They hit the INFOVIEW-url and they dont need no password.
The thing that we want to acheive, is to connect to MSAnalysisServer2008, with Designer. I want to create a universe on top of MSAS OLAP-cubes, and take advantage of the rowlevel-security that has been implemented in the CUBE-server.
When creating a connection in Designer using MSAS2008 OLEDB for OLAP Provider, there is the Authentication mode-dropdown. The second alternative "Use single-sign-on when refreshing..." gives the  error-message "DBD: Unknown error has occured when determining the ODBO connection credentials".
I dont know if this is a bug, or if when using middleware MSAS2008 OLEDB for OLAP Provider in combination with Authentication mode="Use single-sign-on when refreshing.." it isnt supposed to work. From the Designer documentation it should work.
We have tested this for Voyager, which connects directly to the cubes. It works in Voyager. the connection "feeds" the cubesystem with the user currently logged on to InfoView, and gives the correct rowlevel-restriction.
We want to acheive the same thing with Webintelligence.

    Björn

  • Updating Physical Cube Tables and Hierarchies OBIEE 11.1.1.7

    OBIEE 11.1.1.7
I have imported a MSAS Cube, modeled it and created a presentation layer. I now have some new hierarchies I need to add to the phyicial layer.
How do you import new Cube Tables and/or Hierarchies?
When I select the Import option it creates a new OLAP database and connection pool, I am unable to successfully move those changes into the existing OLAP Connection.
I have been through the documentation and it reccomends importing over a manual process. However I am unable to figure out how to do this with the import process.
Oracle® Fusion Middleware Metadata Repository Builder's Guide for Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition
    11g Release 1 (11.1.1) Part Number E10540-05
Chapter 8 Working with Physical Tables, Cubes, and Joins
There is a section called Working with Multidimensional Sources in the Physical Layer, in this section is says
"Each multidimensional catalog in the data source can contain multiple physical cubes. You can import the metadata for one or more of these cubes into your Oracle BI repository. Although it is possible to create a cube table manually, it is recommended that you import metadata for cube tables and their components"
The New Utilities feature(s) is really cool, but it doesn't work for OLAP connections.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michael,
it works, but its a bit tricky. I did it with Oracle OLAP and I think it must be similar with other OLAP Databases.
Rename your existing Database in Physical Layer to the name Metadata Import dialog would create. With Oracle OLAP the "Data Source Name" ist used. Just try it once.
Unfortunately you can not merge dimensions and cubes as it is with relational Objects . So you have to delete the cube and dimensions you will import from you renamed Database in Physical Layer. Of course the mapping between physical and business model will be lost
Now you can import your modified OLAP-Cubes and Dimensions and it should be placed in your renamed Database in Physical Layer
Open the sources of your logical tables in business model and add the Dimensions or Cubes in the "General" Tab. Move to the Tab "Column Mapping" and check if mapping is OK. If not (this will be the case, if you customized the column names), you have to do the mapping from the scratch .
I recommend to use the original names from the data source. If you need another name for a column, just create a new logical column and use "Derive from existing columns". Now you can reimport OLAP Metadate quicker because the Mapping is done automatically.
    Hope this helps
    Regards Claus

  • Largest Oracle OLAP cube

    Forum members,
What is the largest Oracle OLAP cube that is out there in terms of total size, number of dimensions, and metrics? The company I recently joined uses Microsoft SSAS for building cubes pulling data from an Oracle DB. The size of the Microsoft SSAS cube is 18 TB (Tera Bites). I am encouraging these people to use Oracle OLAP, but there is push back saying Oracle OLAP won't scale to the extent Microsoft SSAS has.
I need some real data to defend my case. Has any one moved from Microsoft SSAS to Oracle OLAP?
    Thanks,
    Logan

    Logan,
In addition to the link that David provided, some more points are:
(1). With cube compression, it could be that the same 18 TB cube in MSAS is smaller in OLAP. Its hard to prove it without doing a test load.
(2). Microsoft does have a very feature-rich front-end to develop/build dimensions and cubes for MSAS, compared to Oracle OLAP's AWM.
Most of the work is handled in relational sql-views before loading dimensions and cubes in Oracle-OLAP. That is why there is relatively less functionality in AWM.
(3). Another thing I heard about in MSAS is "Scoped Assignments". I am not sure what it is, so I can't say how it can be done in Oracle-OLAP. If your customer currently use this MSAS feature, then you can post a question on this forum providing some details.
(4). MSAS does provide good Excel reporting. If your client will continue using Excel, then you should look at Simba's Oracle OLAP MDX plugin for Excel. Search this forum and you will find information about it, or goto http://www.simba.com/MDX-Provider-for-Oracle-OLAP.htm
(5). Writeback is another feature that can be done easily in MSAS. With Oracle-OLAP, you will have to come up with a custom (although simple) solution, where the data will be written into a table first and then loaded into Oracle-OLAP cubes. Its a very very quick process.
(6). There are more choices for reporting tools compared to MSAS. Since Oracle-OLAP cubes are queried through SQL SELECT statements, as long as a reporting tool can generate SELECT statements for an Oracle database, it can also work with Oracle-OLAP.
(7). Finally, it is much easier to federate (or combine) relational and multi-dimensional data together between Oracle-OLAP and Relational, as both are in the same database. So you may not have to store all the data into OLAP cube, what is currently loaded into MSAS cube.
Overall, its a slightly different way of doing things between OLAP and MSAS. But I am almost certain that with the power and scalability of Oracle database, Oracle-OLAP will perform better than MSAS. You just have to know how to convert those MSAS cubes/dimensions into OLAP cubes/dimensions.

  • Connection errors when configuring OBIEE to access data in MS Analysis Cube

    Hi,
I also have a requirement of making reports in OBIEE using MSAS 2005 Olap Cube as a source.
I have installed SQL Server 2005 with analysis services on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (Service Pack 1).
I have applied SQL Server 2005 Patch (SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x86-ENU.exe).
The customer has sent me a database dump and a Cube dump.
I have restored the database and Cube in the database and analysis server.
I am able to see the cube through the management studio.
Now I have to make reports in OBIEE with the MSAS Cube as a source.
For this I configured Virtual directory using the link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/httpasws.mspx
Then when I try to import the cube from OBIEE RPD by giving the URL
    http://10.176.230.227/olap/msmdpump.dll
I get the following error :
nQSError: 46100 Sax parser failed with error an exception occurred Type NetAccessorException Message Could not connect to the socket for URL http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd
    I have everything installed on a single system (Sql Server,IIS,OBIEE 10.1.3.4 ).
    Regards,
    Krishna

Before trying to use this URL in OBIEE to import cubes, try this in Internet Explorer.
    Follow the following steps:
    a. Run this URL in Internet Explorer
    b. You should get an output like this:
    +
    - <soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    - <soap:Body>
    - <soap:Fault xmlns="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    <faultcode>XMLAnalysisError.0xc10e0002</faultcode>
<faultstring>Parser: The syntax for 'GET' is incorrect.</faultstring>
    - <detail>
    <Error ErrorCode="3238920194" Description="Parser: The syntax for 'GET' is incorrect." Source="Unknown" HelpFile="" />
    </detail>
    </soap:Fault>
    </soap:Body>
    </soap:Envelope>
    +
    c. If yes, this proves that the virtual directory in IIS has been configured properly. If you get any other message, for example "Page cannot be displayed" or "Page not found", it means there are some issues with Virtual directory.
Try this and let me know the results...and then we can proceed further
