University-Wide Infrastructure

I've just been hired to configure a campus-wide podcasting system to empower our faculty. I just got back from WWDC and see huge value in the new Podcast Producer coming with Leopard and Leopard Server. However, most of the classrooms we have set up with technology are PCs. Right now I'm thinking that we would need to create some sort of plan to phase them out and replace with Mac Mini's.
However, we have many professors that use PCs. I'd like to be able to create an infrastructure that will support both platforms. I've been doing tons of reading on Apple's Education sites, ALI, as well as studying up on the profiles of larger schools that are doing it now, but most point to a Mac-centric solution.
I'd love to plug into this community, let you all peek in on what we're doing, and hopefully our journey will help others coming in behind me. But for those before me, any help with what mics you'd recommend? Software? Hardware? Students record or empower faculty? workflow?
Would love to hear all of your ideas. Thanks.

Hi Joseph. I replied to the locked out thread. I'll chime in here as well with more objectivity to your re-worded question.
    CONS:
Universal Apps not all ready - but we expected this
Not tested enough? Problems would have surfaced. Don't make the end users your R & D team - that's Microsoft's greatest shortcoming. Test them more before releasing them as the new superior computer
Pricey. But state of the art, so... Think of it as a hot-rod.
CPU whine on a percentage of the units - no action *so far* from Apple
Excessive heat - much more than what the PowerBook series generated
    PROS:
Apple's Customer Service was flawless - can't say enough about it
Out-of-box experiece was wonderful. Quality packaging even - very impressive, very detailed
    VERY FAST computer. AMAZING speed
Great overall, superior package of hardware & software
Mac OS more seamless & stable - tho my Windows experiences were not as far-fetched as Mac enthusiasts in here make them out to be
Sleek, stylish, almost makes you proud to take it out and set it up
Attention to detail. Even the MacBook Pro logo that's laser-engraved into the screen bezel reflects light and looks 'top-shelf'
Overall fit & finish exceptional (though some are not happy with the lid latches not closing all the way - but compared to most other brands but Sony & Lenovo, pretty much a non-issue)
Aside from frustration about Apple's response to heat and whine in general, mine doesn't exhibit whine, and it shouldn't for the price I paid. But I'm very content so far with using my unit as a total desktop replacement for a very powerful PC (3.4 Ghz, 2 Gb ram, multiple SATA drives, etc.). I'm still trading up to the 17" MBP to have on-board FireWire 800 & other features, and, in the hopes that it runs somewhat cooler. Hard drives should not be in high-heat environments. As long as the 17" doesn't whine, I should be more than content.

    Hi Joseph.
I'm a first time Mac purchaser, after years of making music on PCs professionally with everyone people telling me that it cannot be done. I've been skeptical about moving to the Mac platform for this reason. I've even had some Mac die-hards laugh when I said that I've been producing professional music projects on PCs for years. Oddly, when I listened to their own productions, they sounded like C**P - which was a reflection on them and not their computers. So I've been fairly tongue-in-cheek about the whole idea of switching to the Mac platform. But I have many colleagues running Mac platform, and my switching ensures total compatibility on some large projects that I'm working on this year.
I actually had several other PC manufacturer's quotes printed out and was ready to buy. The Mac representative called me in follow up to my online price inquiry. I merely priced a unit and saved it in an online shopping cart in the online Apple Store. They called to follow up, which very much impressed me, and frankly, that sold the unit. And spend away I did - nearly $4,000. 2.16, 2 gigs ram, APP, software, keyboard, mouse, printer -- many extras of all sorts.
The whole customer service experience and out of box experience was flawless, and had me preaching Mac brand within hours - I couldn't be happier. Then came the online forums, and the horror stories of other MacBook owners and what they're dealing with...
I found that the MacBooks have stereotypical problems that are NOT being handled properly by Apple. Some new build problems ARE being addressed well - namely the inverter problems with the displays. But the CPU whine is another story entirely, as is the heat being generated by some units. It seems that some units are running MUCH hotter than others, and actually burning the skin of users. Users are actually getting out laser heat guns and running their own tests on the units out of frustration from Apple not responding, and posting the results here. Some units appear to be running as much as 20 deg. C higher than others under load. Remember, that's NOT Farenheit, but CENTIGRADE. Users are now tearing down their own machines and attempting corrections to fix some of the irratic heat problems on their own - even out of risk of voiding their warranties.
Users with these problems are being treated very poorly at the Apple Stores. They're told by Geniuses and managers that the obvious problems are 'within spec' and therefore a non-issue. Yet anyone that buys the book to do, say, audio recording, is quickly finding that the unit cannot be even used in the same room as a condensor microphone without employing a work-around for the CPU whine, because it's too loud. It's also too loud for a basic meeting room setting as well, users are posting.
These are VERY expensive units. They're not cheap by any means. And this sort of treatment, or ducking of the issues is totally unacceptable.
The way that Apple is avoiding direct response to these known issues is a VERY poor marketing strategy, and causing people to wonder if they're slipping in their historical customer-service. Seemingly Apple is very quietly dealing with users and avoiding any sort of recall or public statement.
My personal 'customer service' experience with Apple has been wonderful, and a breath of fresh air compared to some past experiences. My unit is quiet and though it runs VERY hot, mine's not out-of control as some others are expriencing. But watching others go through so many hassles - mostly consumer-advocacy related - expecially after they've spent a boat-load of a lot of money on a top-of-the-line notebook is disheartening, and frankly it's scaring me away from the brand very quickly. From a marketing standpoint, Apple needs to publically address these issues, and quick.
They're slipping on this one. The MacBook Pros have some issues - at least the 15" ones do, and they're avoiding talking about it. Many users are waiting to see if the new 17" units that are shipping this week are experiencing any similar problems. I'm one of those people.
One last marketing flaw that Apple has made is not announcing the 17" ahead of time to those purchasing the 15". I bought mine, and less than 14 business days later, the 17" comes out with more options, FireWire 800 that I desperately needed, and it ships for $50-$100 LESS than mine. Not a great way to make new owners of 15" models happy about their purchase.
Good luck on your thesis. Working on one myself.

  • What is BI ? How we implement & what is the cost to implement ?

What is BI ? How we implement & what is the cost to implement ?
    Thanks,
    Sumit.

    Hi Sumit,
Below is the description according to ur query
Business Intelligence is a process for increasing the competitive advantage of a business by intelligent use of available data in decision making. This process is pictured below.
The five key stages of Business Intelligence:
    1.     Data Sourcing
    2.     Data Analysis
    3.     Situation Awareness
    4.     Risk Assessment
    5.     Decision Support
    Data sourcing
Business Intelligence is about extracting information from multiple sources of data. The data might be: text documents - e.g. memos or reports or email messages; photographs and images; sounds; formatted tables; web pages and URL lists. The key to data sourcing is to obtain the information in electronic form. So typical sources of data might include: scanners; digital cameras; database queries; web searches; computer file access; etcetera.
    Data analysis
Business Intelligence is about synthesizing useful knowledge from collections of data. It is about estimating current trends, integrating and summarising disparate information, validating models of understanding, and predicting missing information or future trends. This process of data analysis is also called data mining or knowledge discovery. Typical analysis tools might use:-
    u2022     probability theory - e.g. classification, clustering and Bayesian networks;
    u2022     statistical methods - e.g. regression;
    u2022     operations research - e.g. queuing and scheduling;
u2022     artificial intelligence - e.g. neural networks and fuzzy logic.
    Situation awareness
Business Intelligence is about filtering out irrelevant information, and setting the remaining information in the context of the business and its environment. The user needs the key items of information relevant to his or her needs, and summaries that are syntheses of all the relevant data (market forces, government policy etc.).  Situation awareness is the grasp of  the context in which to understand and make decisions.  Algorithms for situation assessment provide such syntheses automatically.
    Risk assessment
Business Intelligence is about discovering what plausible actions might be taken, or decisions made, at different times. It is about helping you weigh up the current and future risk, cost or benefit of taking one action over another, or making one decision versus another. It is about inferring and summarising your best options or choices.
    Decision support
Business Intelligence is about using information wisely.  It aims to provide warning you of important events, such as takeovers, market changes, and poor staff performance, so that you can take preventative steps. It seeks to help you analyse and make better business decisions, to improve sales or customer satisfaction or staff morale. It presents the information you need, when you need it.
This section describes how we are using extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) processes and a data warehouse architecture to build our enterprise-wide data warehouse in incremental project steps. Before an enterprise-wide data warehouse could be delivered, an integrated architecture and a companion implementation methodology needed to be adopted. A productive and flexible tool set was also required to support ETL processes and the data warehouse architecture in a production service environment. The resulting data warehouse architecture has the following four principal components:
    u2022 Data Sources
    u2022 Data Warehouses
    u2022 Data Marts
    u2022 Publication Services
ETL processing occurs between data sources and the data warehouse, between the data warehouse and data marts and may also be used within the data warehouse and data marts.
    Data Sources
The university has a multitude of data sources residing in different Data Base Management System (DBMS) tables and non-DBMS data sets. To ensure that all relevant data source candidates were identified, a physical inventory and logical inventory was conducted. The compilation of these inventories ensures that we have an enterprise-wide view of the university data resource.
The physical inventory was comprised of a review of DBMS cataloged tables as well as data sets used by business processes. These data sets had been identified through developing the enterprise-wide information needs model.
    3
    SUGI 30 Focus Session
The logical inventory was constructed from u201Cbrain-stormingu201D sessions which focused on common key business terms which must be referenced when articulating the institutionu2019s vision and mission (strategic direction, goals, strategies, objectives and activities). Once the primary terms were identified, they were organized into directories such as u201CProjectu201D, u201CLocationu201D, u201CAcademic Entityu201D, u201CUniversity Personu201D, u201CBudget Envelopeu201D etc. Relationships were identified by recognizing u201Cnatural linkagesu201D within and among directories, and the u201Cdrill-downsu201D and u201Croll-upsu201D that were required to support u201Creport byu201D and u201Creport onu201D information hierarchies. This exercise allowed the directories to be sub-divided into hierarchies of business terms which were useful for presentation and validation purposes.
We called this important deliverable the u201CConceptual Data Modelu201D (CDM) and it was used as the consolidated conceptual (paper) view of all of the Universityu2019s diverse data sources. The CDM was then subjected to a university-wide consultative process to solicit feedback and communicate to the university community that this model would be adopted by the Business Intelligence (BI) project as a governance model in managing the incremental development of its enterprise-wide data warehousing project.
    Data Warehouse
This component of our data warehouse architecture (DWA) is used to supply quality data to the many different data marts in a flexible, consistent and cohesive manner. It is a u2018landing zoneu2019 for inbound data sources and an organizational and re-structuring area for implementing data, information and statistical modeling. This is where business rules which measure and enforce data quality standards for data collection in the source systems are tested and evaluated against appropriate data quality business rules/standards which are required to perform the data, information and statistical modeling described previously.
Inbound data that does not meet data warehouse data quality business rules is not loaded into the data warehouse (for example, if a hierarchy is incomplete). While it is desirable for rejected and corrected records to occur in the operational system, if this is not possible then start dates for when the data can begin to be collected into the data warehouse may need to be adjusted in order to accommodate necessary source systems data entry u201Cre-worku201D. Existing systems and procedures may need modification in order to permanently accommodate required data warehouse data quality measures. Severe situations may occur in which new data entry collection transactions or entire systems will need to be either built or acquired.
We have found that a powerful and flexible extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) process is to use Structured Query Language (SQL) views on host database management systems (DBMS) in conjunction with a good ETL tool such as SAS® ETL Studio. This tool enables you to perform the following tasks:
u2022 The extraction of data from operational data stores
u2022 The transformation of this data
u2022 The loading of the extracted data into your data warehouse or data mart
When the data source is a u201Cnon-DBMSu201D data set it may be advantageous to pre-convert this into a SAS® data set to standardize data warehouse metadata definitions. Then it may be captured by SAS® ETL Studio and included in the data warehouse along with any DBMS source tables using consistent metadata terms. SAS® data sets, non-SAS® data sets, and any DBMS table will provide the SAS® ETL tool with all of the necessary metadata required to facilitate productive extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) work.
Having the ability to utilize standard structured query language (SQL) views on host DBMS systems and within SAS® is a great advantage for ETL processing. The views can serve as data quality filters without having to write any procedural code. The option exists to u201Cmaterializeu201D these views on the host systems or leave them u201Cun-materializedu201D on the hosts and u201Cmaterializeu201D them on the target data structure defined in the SAS® ETL process. These choices may be applied differentially depending upon whether you are working with u201Ccurrent onlyu201D or u201Ctime seriesu201D data. Different deployment configurations may be chosen based upon performance issues or cost considerations. The flexibility of choosing different deployment options based upon these factors is a considerable advantage.

    Data Marts
This component of the data warehouse architecture may manifest as the following:
    u2022 Customer u201Cvisibleu201D relational tables
    u2022 OLAP cubes
    u2022 Pre-determined parameterized and non-parameterized reports
    u2022 Ad-hoc reports
u2022 Spreadsheet applications with pre-populated work sheets and pivot tables
    u2022 Data visualization graphics
u2022 Dashboard/scorecards for performance indicator applications
Typically a business intelligence (BI) project may be scoped to deliver an agreed upon set of data marts in a project. Once these have been well specified, the conceptual data model (CDM) is used to determine what parts need to be built or used as a reference to conform the inbound data from any new project. After the detailed data mart specifications (DDMS) have been verified and the conceptual data model (CDM) components determined, a source and target logical data model (LDM) can be designed to integrate the detailed data mart specification (DDMS) and conceptual data model (CMD). An extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) process can then be set up and scheduled to populate the logical data models (LDM) from the required data sources and assist with any time series and data audit change control requirements.
Over time as more and more data marts and logical data models (LDMu2019s) are built the conceptual data model (CDM) becomes more complete. One very important advantage to this implementation methodology is that the order of the data marts and logical data models can be entirely driven by project priority, project budget allocation and time-to-completion constraints/requirements. This data warehouse architecture implementation methodology does not need to dictate project priorities or project scope as long as the conceptual data model (CDM) exercise has been successfully completed before the first project request is initiated.

    Publication Services
This is the visible presentation environment that business intelligence (BI) customers will use to interact with the published data mart deliverables. The SAS® Information Delivery Portal will be utilized as a web delivery channel to deliver a u201Cone-stop information shoppingu201D solution. This software solution provides an interface to access enterprise data, applications and information. It is built on top of the SAS Business Intelligence Architecture, provides a single point of entry and provides a Portal API for application development. All of our canned reports generated through SAS® Enterprise Guide, along with a web-based query and reporting tool (SAS® Web Report Studio) will be accessed through this publication channel.
Using the portalu2019s personalization features we have customized it for a McMaster u201Clook and feelu201D. Information is organized using pages and portlets and our stakeholders will have access to public pages along with private portlets based on role authorization rules. Stakeholders will also be able to access SAS® data sets from within Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel using the SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office. This tool will enable our stakeholders to execute stored processes (a SAS® program which is hosted on a server) and embed the results in their documents and spreadsheets. Within Excel, the SAS® Add-In can:
u2022 Access and view SAS® data sources
u2022 Access and view any other data source that is available from a SAS® server
u2022 Analyze SAS® or Excel data using analytic tasks
The SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office will not be accessed through the SAS® Information Delivery Portal as this is a client component which will be installed on individual personal computers by members of our Client Services group. Future stages of the project will include interactive reports (drill-down through OLAP cubes) as well as balanced scorecards to measure performance indicators (through SAS® Strategic Performance Management software). This, along with event notification messages, will all be delivered through the SAS® Information Delivery Portal.
Publication is also channeled according to audience with appropriate security and privacy rules.
    SECURITY u2013 AUTHENTICATION AND AUTHORIZATION
The business value derived from using the SAS® Value Chain Analytics includes an authoritative and secure environment for data management and reporting. A data warehouse may be categorized as a u201Ccollection of integrated databases designed to support managerial decision making and problem solving functionsu201D and u201Ccontains both highly detailed and summarized historical data relating to various categories, subjects, or areasu201D. Implementation of the research funding data mart at McMaster has meant that our stakeholders now have electronic access to data which previously was not widely disseminated. Stakeholders are now able to gain timely access to this data in the form that best matches their current information needs. Security requirements are being addressed taking into consideration the following:
    u2022 Data identification
    u2022 Data classification
    u2022 Value of the data
u2022 Identifying any data security vulnerabilities
u2022 Identifying data protection measures and associated costs
u2022 Selection of cost-effective security measures
u2022 Evaluation of effectiveness of security measures
At McMaster access to data involves both authentication and authorization. Authentication may be defined as the process of verifying the identity of a person or process within the guidelines of a specific
    6
    SUGI 30 Focus Session
security policy (who you are). Authorization is the process of determining which permissions the user has for which resources (permissions). Authentication is also a prerequisite for authorization. At McMaster business intelligence (BI) services that are not public require a sign on with a single university-wide login identifier which is currently authenticated using the Microsoft Active Directory. After a successful authentication the SAS® university login identifier can be used by the SAS® Meta data server. No passwords are ever stored in SAS®. Future plans at the university call for this authentication to be done using Kerberos.
At McMaster aggregate information will be open to all. Granular security is being implemented as required through a combination of SAS® Information Maps and stored processes. SAS® Information Maps consist of metadata that describe a data warehouse in business terms. Through using SAS® Information Map Studio which is an application used to create, edit and manage SAS® Information Maps, we will determine what data our stakeholders will be accessing through either SAS® Web Report Studio (ability to create reports) or SAS® Information Delivery Portal (ability to view only). Previously access to data residing in DB-2 tables was granted by creating views using structured query language (SQL). Information maps are much more powerful as they capture metadata about allowable usage and query generation rules. They also describe what can be done, are database independent and can cross databases and they hide the physical structure of the data from the business user. Since query code is generated in the background, the business user does not need to know structured query language (SQL). As well as using Information Maps, we will also be using SAS® stored processes to implement role based granular security.
At the university some business intelligence (BI) services are targeted for particular roles such as researchers. The primary investigator role of a research project needs access to current and past research funding data at both the summary and detail levels for their research project. A SAS® stored process (a SAS® program which is hosted on a server) is used to determine the employee number of the login by checking a common university directory and then filtering the research data mart to selectively provide only the data that is relevant for the researcher who has signed onto the decision support portal.
Other business intelligence (BI) services are targeted for particular roles such as Vice-Presidents, Deans, Chairs, Directors, Managers and their Staff. SAS® stored processes are used as described above with the exception that they filter data on the basis of positions and organizational affiliations. When individuals change jobs or new appointments occur the authorized business intelligence (BI) data will always be correctly presented.
As the SAS® stored process can be executed from many environments (for example, SAS® Web Report Studio, SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office, SAS® Enterprise Guide) authorization rules are consistently applied across all environments on a timely basis. There is also potential in the future to automatically customize web portals and event notifications based upon the particular role of the person who has signed onto the SAS® Information Delivery Portal.
    ARCHITECTURE (PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT)
We are currently in the planning stages for building a scalable, sustainable infrastructure which will support a scaled deployment of the SAS® Value Chain Analytics. We are considering implementing the following three-tier platform which will allow us to scale horizontally in the future:
Our development environment consists of a server with 2 x Intel Xeon 2.8GHz Processors, 2GB of RAM and is running Windows 2000 u2013 Service Pack 4.
We are considering the following for the scaled roll-out of our production environment.
    A. Hardware
    1. Server 1 - SAS® Data Server
    - 4 way 64 bit 1.5Ghz Itanium2 server
    7

    REPORTING
We have created a number of parameterized stored processes using SAS® Enterprise Guide, which our stakeholders will access as both static (HTML as well as PDF documents) and interactive reports (drill-down) through SAS® Web Report Studio and the SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office. All canned reports along with SAS® Web Report Studio will be accessed through the SAS® Information Delivery Portal.
    NEXT STEPS
Next steps of the project include development of a financial data mart along with appropriate data quality standards, monthly frozen snapshots and implementation of university-wide financial reporting standards. This will facilitate electronic access to integrated financial information necessary for the development and maintenance of an integrated, multi-year financial planning framework. Canned reports to include monthly web-based financial statements, with drill-down capability along with budget templates automatically populated with data values and saved in different workbooks for different subgroups (for example by Department). The later will be accomplished using Microsoft Direct Data Exchange (DDE).
    8
    SUGI 30 Focus Session
As well, we will begin the implementation of SAS® Strategic Performance Management Software to support the performance measurement and monitoring initiative that is a fundamental component of McMasteru2019s strategic plan. This tool will assist in critically assessing and identifying meaningful and statistically relevant measures and indicators. This software can perform causal analyses among various measures within and across areas providing useful information on inter-relationships between factors and measures. As well as demonstrating how decisions in one area affect other areas, these cause-and-effect analyses can reveal both good performance drivers and also possible detractors and enable u2018evidenced-basedu2019 decision-making. Lessons learned include the importance of taking a consultative approach not only in assessing information needs, but also in building data hierarchies, understanding subject matter, and in prioritizing tasks to best support decision making and inform senior management. We found that a combination of training and mentoring (knowledge transfer) helped us accelerate learning the new tools. It was very important to ensure that time and resources were committed to complete the necessary planning and data quality initiatives prior to initiating the first project. When developing a project plan, it is important to

  • Access read-only LDAP for username/password, Directory Server LDAP for rest

Hello! I keep trying to find documentation on the above, but thus far I have been unable to find something that explains this well (and my attempts at figuring out thus far have failed).
I have a read-only LDAP that is used University wide, and I am not allowed to change how it currently operates. It uses double-bind authentication in that you search for a user to get their DN, then bind to that DN with the users password to see if it was correct.
I'd like to use the above setup to verify a user's credential as well as return some basic information about them (name, email, etc). After this, I'd like to use another freshly installed Directory Server LDAP to manage the roles that seem to be needed for Portal Server (as I cannot write to the original LDAP).
Any help or advice on the above would be appreciated! Thank you.

The authentication you described is the default way LDAP authentication works.
AM Ldap auth-module allows you to 'pull' attributes from the LDAP server you're using for authentication and store it in it's 'amSDK' Directory Server - which is leveraged by Portal Server (if you're talking about Sun's Portal Server).
However this is only done if the profile is created (set 'dynamic profile generation' in auth - service).
As Portal Server does not support the new 'identity repsoistory API' of AM you have to stick to AM's legacy mode when using Portal Server.
To keep the the data in sync (if needed) you have to write a post-auth class.

  • Please add a no-sign-in feature for Muse in Enterprise

We install Muse in a multimedia lab for our university, in order to provide a wonderfully easy web design tool.
Our students and faculty are put off and confused by the login screen and the inconvenience of needing to create an adobe ID before accessing the program (and having to remember their Adobe password and sign in on every new machine). Would you guys be willing to consider a configuration option for enterprise users where the following changes occur:
+Upon launch, Muse would be logged into a generic university-wide account, for use with typekit. This account would be pre-configured during installation
+The Publish option for connecting to Business Catalyst would be greyed out, with a tooltip reading "To publish to your business catalyst, please log in with your adobe id"
+Individual users could log into their adobe accounts, replacing the generic login for their user profile only, on that machine
In exchange for these changes, I can offer to pre-populate the minds of the next generation with Adobe software usage habits...

Really?? That'd be great news, then! (Sorry for the generalizations)
I will have to check on this, and get back to you. I'm doing multimedia teaching--the guy who configured the install assured me that a "no sign-in option" wasn't available in August when he packaged the deployment.
We're on a CC Enterprise license; I'll ask our deployment guys to make absolutely sure that they are using the correct installer.

  • Newbee: I want to Podcast with Apple - where to start?

    Hi,
I am in a WINDOWS environment trying to give apple technology a chance. At Heilbronn university we want to experiment with podcast technology using apples podcast producer. Blue-eyed I tried to install the Server OS and, as the next step, tried to configure the machine using the "podcast producer administration guide". I failed. E.g. the guide tells me to set up DNS to strange addresses, but only HOW, not WHY. And it doesn't work.
    So I need help:
I have an environment where the server (mac mini) is attached via ethernet (manual DHCP with static IP address) using our university DNS. Our university has its own mail server, its own LDAP Server, etc.
Attachment to LDAP is not needed but I want to use a macbook air to capture the podcasts.
    Where should I start?
    Any help is welcome.
    Best regards,
    Dr. Jörg Winckler

    Guten Tag Jörg!
Your setup is similar to one i've just deployed for a college here in England.
Are you planning on using Podcast Capture or quicktime on the macbook air to capture the podcasts? You have to login to the mac server in order to submit the podcasts, and that requires a user account either standalone on the mac server's openldap, or your university wide LDAP.
The other options depend on exactly what you want to do with your podcasts. You might not need a mail server at all if you're not publishing notifications..
As for DNS, its actually fairly simple. You just need the FQDN of the mac server to be published on the network you will be using to connect to the mac server from the macbook air, and it needs a reverse DNS entry for the same.
I hope this helps, but feel free to ask detailed questions on anything i've missed.
    Thanks,

  • Virus Scan for  Windows Viruses on Mac

I am new to discussion group since my Apple Care subscription expired and they don't renew it.
I hope this is the correct Forum for this topic----if not, please advise which of over several thousand threads might it be associated more closely with?
I'm Looking for a virus scanner that will scan windows materials (CD disks with program files on them) while in a MAC 10.3 OSX environment.... (sorry haven't yet updated to either TIger or Leopard 10.4 or 10.5 as of yet).
Can use or buy either an online scanner or resident virus scanner within the Mac. As this discussion group concerns the PowerBook G4 15 inch screen, that is what I chose to post first within.
    Thanks for reading this!

    Hi eww:
Wow! You are correct for most of your assertions and observations...but unfortunately for you, I am employed and live in a PC Windows world that makes no excuses or time for the few (to the IT managers) Apple/Mac users out there. You do have a fan here in those multitude of PC vs. Mac advertisements, which clearly point out the folly of anyone using Windows on a PC.
I am employed by a 21 college University, which, at my last estimate, currently is funding Microsoft to the tune of $42 million dollars a year for its Windows Licenses across the University platforms which are almost 100% Windows based (or mainframe Unix for computer science classes of course). I consistently get emails with unopenable "windat" files and "PowerPoint" "excel" etc files and CD's that are totally unusable in the MAC, and for which I maintained the PC. Currently offline, its a two step dance to get them off line to the MAC and then save to a jump drive and thence recopied over to the PC to be opened there. They will not normally spend college money duplicating 100 page endless documents for the one user who has a "pc" problem, and they are just as enthusiastic about their PC's and Windows and hide any defects under the general phrase "computer or internet system is down---sorry for the inconvenience" broadcast over the old fashioned "telephone answering machine" network we still have functioning after 20 years! Also, unfortunately, after having spent monies for many expensive computer programs and their proprietary methods of "saving" files so that only their program can open and utilize them.....I am not about to buy all "Mac" versions of the programs (if there are any in the same company---usually they are not), or spend the time and money buying brand new Apple created or third party created programs, learn how to use them, and then save to their unique proprietary methods of saving files, all the data and files which are saved now on the PC. That unfortunately is simply not an option. Unfortunately for timing, after investigating those programs that claim to convert the Mac into a "Windows friendly" platform also run afoul of many issues, including the program cost is just the beginning, as now one has to purchase all new versions of the programs to run on a different computer with its new unique CD product key, not to speak of the difficulty of deciding if I go with XP which can run and share the files as they are, or the new VISTA program, which as I've explored this issue with some of the major programs I use and no longer can access right now on the PC---they say that (in typical Microsoft computerspeak) "sorry, but you may find that older programs no longer run in the VISTA environment, so new programs and files may have to be created" (that sentence is a simplified compilation of the programs that I've investigated..... The simplest one to show you this on is the fact I'm a WordPerfect User in a "Word" world. Even the MAC I have has Microsoft's version of Office on it with their terrible Word program on it. Fortunately for me, WordPerfect realizes this is the issue and creates keys that allow one to change the way a file is saved so that those people with Word, or a dozen other word-processing systems can read and correct those files. Unfortunately, that does it for WordPerfect as the other companies I use and have used for years through many versions on the Windows based systems, do not care if their programs would be readable by people using similar systems on a Mac.
But enough about why I still cling to the PC.
You brought up interesting points that I didn't stop to think about when I went searching for AV software that would check up on the Windows based CD for malware, spyware, and viruses. I've installed CD's from reputable companies that have had "issues" where people do insert such spyware etc unknowing to the top bosses into their production of the CD's in order to create havoc and upset the end user. Of course normal AV software on my PC has removed those programs for years. My difficulty is clear now, that I cannot use the older versions of the software as they do not install on my machine anymore with the "larger" Hard Drives and it detects that and refuses to scan for it....which takes care of the pre 2006 versions of the AV software.... Post 2006, AV software, must be "activated" using the internet and updated frequently else the AV software shuts down as a precuation against piracy. Of course turning on and connecting to the internet for even a few minutes of registration invites in to my computer a trojan horse which can do its damage before the AV software has been activated and the "Internet" scanning part of the software activated. I've discussed this problem with the software company at length and they assure me that they never thought of the problem, as most people like myself are installing "upgrades" not from "zero" so the older AV software is kept functioning until its removal is requested by the "Wizard" installing the new one, after confirmation of the CD product key allows for the installation and registration of the software.....I know I know too much details but you did respond to me as if I did not know of the detriments of having a PC and now I've explained the problems that led me to this course of action......its not the patience of a saint, but the business (education) that I'm in and to which Apple did not have enough of a clout when they were choosing which platform will run University-wide several decades ago, so now we are stuck with Microsoft whether we like it or not!
Back to the AV problem and thanks for pointing out that without the ability to download the program into the computer for the AV program to not only check up but eliminate any malware and viruses, the CD is essentially unchanged and would have been inserted into the PC and transferred its virus to the PC (if it did have one, as even a small virus would seriously hamper my continued discussions with these companies as they are searching for a solution, and coming up empty, of course they ask: any new software or viruses, and that I have until today answered "no"....
So therefore I am between a rock and a hard place not having the ability to install a MP3 creation program into the PC, nor being able to use the latest GarageBand with the parts of the program that had "defects" (we don't call them bugs in Mac, of course Mac's don't get things like viruses or bugs I've found out over the years!)...which have been long rectified with the newer iLife and newer Tiger/Leopard operating systems. Unfortunately, that accident and lack of willing and patient people to carry the computer to where the store is located has been the cause of the delay in upgrading...until now its deadline time and too late to do anything about it....
Of course the Garage Band would be updated when I get to have Leopard installed, but as someone here already pointed out, I have to buy from a store not via mail since I would not trust myself to install something on the Mac simply because I do not have the experience installing stuff on the Mac as except for a font program MacFonts, the Mac PowerBook is essentially the way it was when purchased in 2004.
Thanks again for your patience in reading all of this background material---any suggestion from you or anyone would be appreciated as I’m forever barred from posting my question on the Windows help Forums as the price of entry is too high (another “free” installation of the Windows Genuine Advantage” program!)

  • On ipad to hp 6500A printer, message says contacting printer, but does not connect.

New 6500A prints wirelessly ok from vista laptop and desktop. also prints from ipad printbureau app. but when printing direct from ipad email or pic, I get message that it is "contacting printer", but will not go any further to connect

I have the HP Envy--but it's at my studio and I'm at home so I'm going off memory here, and my understanding of networking is,shall we say, limited. But, as the HP Envy is an AirPrint printer, you don't need Print and Share or any of the other wireless printing apps (although I have Print and Share).
I have a WiFi iPad 2. After Setting up the Envy, I just joined a local wireless network using the Envy touchscreen and then joined that same network on my iPad. Then, when I choose Print in, for example, Pages, the Envy appears after the Select Printer option.
All I can suggest is to make sure the Envy has a connection to the same wireless network as your iPad. (in my case I have to select a local network which does not have Internet access as my Envy isn't registered on the university-wide network.)
(I did complete the initial setup of the Envy on my laptop (MacBook Pro) (and which requires a USB cable for setup) and that gave me printing and scanning options from my MacBook. I don't see how that would have any bearing on the AirPrint function from the iPad.)
(I do think that the Envy printer is an amazingly useful little printer, especially with the ability to scan to a flash drive or SD card.)

Reading your proclamation on the cessation from yourself, I thought some right taunting was deserved so I wrote up a post that I'd wanted to post under an alias in hopes of drawing our dear Uncle Grump back to the board.
Rather than go to the trouble of registering as someone else, I'll just offer up the post here in hopes it gives back some of the chuckles that you've given me over the years.

  • Computer printer connection in University environment with campus wide wifi

My daughter just went off to college.  The campus provides free wifi. Since it is a campus wide network the printer cannot connect to the network.  We tried wireless direct, but that was problematic when she had to print things professors posted on their website as you have to disconnect from the school network to connect to wireless direct and the switch was not as seemless as one would like and sometimes it would take up to 3 minutes to print a page - not sure if the laptop was trying to reconnect to the main network or what was  going on.  So she tried ethernet, but then she had to  disconnect the ethernet cable if she wanted to get back on the campus network otherwise it kept showing it was connected to the campus network but  had limited access.   So before she invests in a long USB - would that even solve the issue? Or,is there some configuration we are missing on the Pavillion and/or HP that would allow connection to the internet wirelessly while the printer is connected to the laptop?  Unfortunately her computer does not seem to have bluetooth capabilities or I would have switched out the printer for one with bluetooth. I have to think there is some way to configure this that we are just missing. Any insight would be appreciated.

Doesn't the printer have to have access to the internet in order to use eprint?  That is the whole problem, the printer is not allowed access to the internet through the University wifi system.  They system will not allow it.  Te printer shows an error message and when I contacted HP tech support they said there was no way around it and showed me how to do direct connect.   So itt either needs to be wifi direct or hard wired.  Wifi direct connect means switching back and forth between networks and makes it very difficult to print anything off of the web.  What I want to know is if there is a way to connect the printer directly through USB or ethernet and still have the computer connect wifi with the university network.  Or does anytime you connect the printer does the computer think that is a network?  We tried ethernet and the computer shows limited access to the internet whenever it is connected.  I am assuming that is because it is trying to connect to a network through the ethernet. I am thinking USB might be better.  However, if it would make no difference we will live with this workaround.  Or are there settings on the laptop and/or printer that would solve the problem another way.

  • Opening PDFs in Preview system-wide/universally?

    Hi,
I'd like to have PDFs open in Preview rather than Adobe Reader. Without first going modifying the "Open with" seting for each file, is there a way to automatically have all PDFs open in Preview by default?
    Thx!

Choose one pdf and do a Get Info. You can then use the Open With section of the Get Info window to choose Preview, and then click the "Change All" button.
