Unix system administration in Leopard

Hi, Everyone!
I'm quite new to this forum, so hello. I'm looking for some material (book, guide, tutorial or other) which can teach me about unix system admin tasks in Leopard, like creating new groups and password protecting these form the Terminal. I have studied parts of the book Unix system administration in 24 hours but it's not really updated for Leopard, and is very centered around /etc/passwd and /etc/group and other UNIX related traditional account management resources. As you know, these etc files are no longer used in any larger capacity. There seems to be a lot of scattered, partly helpful information, around the net about various dscl commands, but no coherent book or something about this. I have also tried Leopard for Unix geeks, it was a bit too programmatically centered for my tastes.
Do you have any idea how to proceed?
--paul

It isn't documented well, if at all. I filtched a few shell scripts and modified and updated them for 10.5 to add users, groups, etc, and several of us here wrote some others.
These include shell scripts entitled
add_user
addgroup
adduser2group
delete_user
delete_group
removeuser_fromgroup
Links to man pages
Links to the shell scripts themselves. You can get these individually by browsing the repository, or you can download the whole thing in one package.

  • What can I do I Lost system administrator name and password

I have used Leopard reinstall disc to reset password but when I want to make changes ie download software etc I am prompted for system Administrators name and password. My ex set up the computer I may have known the password/name but have forgotten it.

Thanks tried that again. There does not seem to be an administrator account, except for (root) option which I get on using start up as above. I use "my account" to log in but do not have admin access only standard. Neither my account nor other accounts (2) one standard one sharing only have admin allowance. Previously tried changing System Administrator (root) and resetting and resetting keychain which achieved nothing. Problem seems to be there is no system administrator among the accounts set up. There used to be. Any suggestions pls.

  • Best directory for isnatlling Unix Applications in Snow Leopard?

Can someone advise me on the best location for installing Unix Applications in Snow Leopard? Should I install them in /usr/local or create a new /opt directory for them? My understanding is that OS X 10.6 does not come with /opt. I prefer to install manually and not use third party software (e.g. Fink).
    Many thanks.

If you are downloading and compiling your own sources, then /usr/local/... would be the expected location.
If you are using the MacPorts.org already ported packages, then get placed in /opt/local/...
If you are using Fink.sf.net already ported packages, then the get placed in /sw/...
And for a few Unix tools at work, and I can not modify my host system, I put it in $HOME/local/..., which works for me because my company uses NFS to allow the use of my same home directory on multiple systems. This works as long as I do not exceed my corporate home directory storage quota

  • Error: X "does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help."

I have received to following error from at least three different applications when they have attempted to auto-update recently: X "does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help."
I am not running off a disk image and I have admin privileges... Not sure what the problem is, but it just started happening (a week or two ago) and I have never previously had a problem with these applications auto-updating.  I have repaired permissions and attempted other "fixes" found on the interweb, but nothing works.  Also, this is only happening on my iMac (27" Intel i5) and not my MacBook Pro (17" Intel i5) -- both are running Lion.  Please help!

If you updated using the default install (merge) from before Tiger, you may be seeing an issue that we saw when Leopard first came out last year.
Not sure of the fix - it was not simple - but if you search back in these forums you might find something that will help. I believe it deals with the numbers assigned to accounts (501, etc).
If you open your Accounts Preferences and unlock the padlock, right-click Advanced Options and read your User ID and Group ID. Let us know what they are.
Now, in the other user admin account, do the same thing.
One of the real experts who knows much more about this than I may be able to then help.
And be sure to check out this article

  • Updates are being installed by system administrator - stuck!?

Snow Leopard Server seems stuck on this process and  indeed I am now scared to reboot!
I have logged on as a diradmin and the updates are visible in the Software updates and despite my clicking install, it does not and seens hung at this process and then if I log out and attempt to apply "software Update" via the Apple menu it tells me that it cant as "Updates are being installed by the system administrator"...
Its a catch 22, closed loop of some sort!
    thanks

    Hi Linda,
Please try the steps mentioned below:
    > Enable the hidden Admin Account on Windows 7 ( Ref :  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-wi ndows-vista/ )
    > Disable all Non-Microsoft Startup Services. (Ref : http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/disable-startup-items-services-windows.html )
    > Disable all the Antivirus softwares like CA, Norton,Mc Afee etc. temporarily from the computer.
Reboot and try installing in the new enabled Admin user account and check.

So you have download OBIEE 11.1.1.5 ""BI Administrator Client Tool" and Install it on Windows Platform.

  • New to the Unix system

Hello all, now that I know the hardware aspects of the mac I thought it's about time I learned the Unix system. I really only know DOS commands, windows, and anything else dealing with the Windows system. I'm ashamed to say I can't even figure out how to use a .tar.gz file even though I researched it too.. I don't truly want to waste anyone's time but if you would it is greatly appreciated.

    Hi 21q,
I was just passing by. Would you like some names of classical introductory books (primers) that present +unix wizards+ used when they were in your place? They're likely unwanted today, so sell for pennies on places like
    http://www.bookfinder.com/
+Panther's Darwin+ used Linux, and Tiger's used +BSD Unix+ (the Berkeley Service Distribution), +AT&T's System V+ with many networking additions to help academics & students communicate. Unix was an elegant 'system'. The beautiful book by Steven Bourne, however, you'll find useless without its commands, at least, re-installed to Darwin.
Some Berkeley extensions, such as finger, were removed when the internet went public. You can still use these on your LAN, though! One day I was using spell and its list in text of all words in +Webster's 2d International Dictionary+ to create limited vocabularies for my 5-year old granddaughter The next day the list was gone. So, ask these knowledgeable people where to get these commands. (Archives other than Fink require you know unix already to get it.) It's free, and the source code is included!
It is very helpful to know what the 2- or 3-letter commands mean, because there are hundreds (as opposed to a dozen on DOS). Though I thought they were designed short & in lower case so several could be on one line, Ken Thompson said he was just a poor touch typist.
The low-level unix 'commands', designed to be incorporated into C programs, are still here, so you can write C-language applications using these. Again, we can refer you to the best introductions.
Note that 'tar' stood for 'tape archiver', which concatenated & copied many files as one, and 'gz' likely stood for the compression utility 'GNU zip' (as it zipping your suitcase). No list of 'official meanings' exists, so guessing their meaning is an ongoing puzzle. 'Biff', however, you'll never guess: this command, which beeped when mail arrived, was the name of its author's dog, who barked instead. The pair, '.tar.gz' is often referred to as a 'tar ball'.
I shan't discuss why Unix, originally built for use by two people on one small machine, spread like fire throughout universities, but the original unix was a work of art. You can appreciate this if you can get most of it back, though you can no longer use such scripts as 'rc' (run command?) in /etc to configure your system.
With primers on programming, books by Comer or Tannenbaum, and the source code on archives, you can use your Mac to master programming to any level. Though Objective-C, I'm told, is elegant, and AppleScript powerful; these are not ISO standard languages, portable to any computer. So I'd recommend learning Unix & C early, using either the vi or emacs editor.
This is a slight expansion of Neil's reply.
    Bruce
PS. Unix has three 'standard' devices to work with: standard input, standard output, and standard error. These were originally displayed on separate monitors, but standard input is now your keyboard & mouse, standard output the 'Terminal', and standard error is the 'Console' (named after a network administrator's console). I direct all errors to the console, and placed it in my dock.

    Hi Tracy,
Have you changed something on your SharePoint 2007 environment recently before this issue occurred?
This issue may be related to Alternate Access Mappings settings like the following similar post, if you have configured AAM, you can check if this issue happened to some URLs, if it's the case, please add the problematic URLs as a Publish URLs for the default
zone for your web application, and also add these URLs as trusted locations, then check results again.
If above doesn't work, please enable ULS log on verbose level to get more useful log errors which time are corresponding to the errors occur.

  • I am trying to download iTunes on my new desktop computer (Windows 7, 64 bit).  It starts installing, and then stops with the message- "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."  I am the sole user- please help.

I am trying to download iTunes on my new desktop computer (Windows 7, 64 bit).  It starts installing, and then stops with the message- "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." This is a stand alone computer and I am the sole user.   Please help.

This is a Microsoft Windows Issue.
    From a MS Support Engineer:
    "Hi,
    ·        Is the computer on a domain?
    ·        Is the issue isolated to only this software or you get the same error message with other software’s as well?
Try the steps below and check if it helps.
    Step 1:
Run the software setup file as an administrator and check if it helps.
    a. Right click on the setup file of the software that you are trying to install.
    b. Select “Run as administrator”.
    Step 2:
Temporarily disable the antivirus software running on the computer and check if you are able to install the software.
    Disable antivirus software
    Warning:
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Step 3:
    a. Click Start, type "Local Security Policy" (without quotes) and press enter.
    b. Click on Software Restriction Policies.
    c. In the right pane, double click on the "enforcement".
    d. Select “All users except local administrators”.
    e. Click Ok and restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed."

  • Unable to Log in. Please see your System Administrator. Laptop chucks Spack

    Hi all,
Got great responses from people in my first post recently, but before I managed to try any of them, my laptop chucked a spack attack.
It will start up, and get to the Log in Window, but when I type in my password (yes, it is the right one...) I get a message which says something like, 'There is a Problem logging in. Please see your System Administrator'. I can't remember the exact wording, but it is pretty much that.
Unfortunately, I am the System Administrator, and I'm using the only log in and password attached to the computer. So I've got no idea how to get into it. A friend suggested I start it up in target disk mode from another computer, but I've got Filevault turned on, so I suspect I'm going to have the same problem.
Recently installed an Apple security Update, but thats the only thing that has changed.
Any suggestions very welcome, as it has been about five days now.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan!
Have you tried resetting the Admin PW?
To reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X CD:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 CD and restart the computer.
    2. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.
    3. When the Installer appears, choose Installer > Reset Password.
    4. Follow the onscreen instructions to change the password.
    5. Quit the Installer and restart your computer while holding down the mouse button to eject the CD.
Copied From Changing your administrator password
    Good Luck!

OK I bit the bullet and contacted support on this one.
There is a known issue with MDS 2012 and business rules with a combination of "must be unique" attributes. If you do not list the attributes in the same order that they were created you will get the generic error I cited. At first they told me it must be
in the same order the attributes are in and that worked on one entity but not the other. The difference was that in the second entity I previously rearranged the attributes in question. Once I changed the order in the business rule to reflect the *original*
order it worked like a champ.
Hopefully this helps save someone some time and money.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")
