Unknown error: 118 on /Volumes

Last time I installed Leopard Server I got "Unknown error: 118" when trying to access /Volumes in any way through Terminal. Disk Utility says it's ok, but it's not. Repairing permissions gets the same error in the log, but it doesn't seem to care. I can't use /Volumes at all, so mounting dmg:s won't work for instance ("no mountable file systems"). I gave up and did an Erase and Install. Once set up again (10.5.1, OD, mail, DNS etc.), I just noticed that the problem is back! I have installed Firefox, so mounting dmgs did work for a while.
$ ls -l /Volumes/
ls: : Unknown error: 118
$ cd /Volumes/
-bash: cd: /Volumes/: Unknown error: 118
$
This isn't fun anymore.

Mac - my absence was because after encountering quite a few bugs and wierdnesses with leopard I decided to scrap the migration project until 10.5.2 or so. Now, here's 10.5.2, and no solution to this problem in sight.
I'm working with a clean install of OS X 10.5.2 Client (intel Imac mid-2007)
and OS X Server 10.4.11 (Xserve G5).
OS X Server is OD Master, but has no management in place for this client, it is not in any computer lists. To reproduce issue:
On leopard client, open Directory Utility, add my 10.4.11 OD Master. It is that simple.
Immediately, cannot mount any volumes nor navigate to or access /Volumes directory
on cd into /Volumes:
cd: /Volumes: Unknown error: 118.
Interestingly, ls -l on / shows permissions have changed on /Volumes to
dr-xr-xr-x (which explains why I cannot mount anything, since there is no write access to /volumes directory) (before connecting to server I believe permissions read drwxrwxr-t)
however, chmod u+w /volumes (to give write access and enable mounting there) results in same Unknown error: 118
Since adding the OD server broke this, I remove the server in Directory Utility and voila, immediately I can navigate into /volumes and mount any volume to my heart's content
permissions on /volumes are restored to:
drwxrwxr-t@
(just to confirm I re-added the server, and the problem was back)
Racking the brains here but I'm afraid I have no solution to add. Could this be a result in a differing OD schema between 10.4 and 10.5? This isn't an applied policy issue for me as I have no mgmt of this client in place, nor record of it anywhere. I connected to my testbed 10.5.2 Server OD Master just for kicks and the problem is not reproduced, only on the Tiger server..
I will keep hitting at this and post again if I discover a solution (or at least a clearer understanding of the problem).

When trying to download to download Firefox 4, the following message comes up: Downloading/Volumes/Firefox/05weDe.part. could not be saved because of an unknown error. Try saving to a different location. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.10. I think I should be able to download Firefox 4. I have Firefox Version 3.6 now.

I am often getting this kind of error, although I believe it's less frequent with Firefox 4 than with the previous version. I do not know a proper solution, but I have noticed this:
    * If I simply try to re-download, it will fail again.
    * If I clear the list in the download window, I can download the same file without any trouble.
I believe the problem may be related to the antivirus software. The file is downloaded completely, and instead of moving it to the final position Firefox gets confused and deletes it.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Unknown error (0x1008) when migrating to cluster shared volume.

    Hi All,
Currently have 4 HV hosts with FC IBM SAN. Each host is Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 6.1.76.01, System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager 3.0.6062. The SAN has been broken up into 20 LUN's, each LUN has been formatted NTFS and hosts the single VHD file for each
    of the 20 VM's.
We have provisioned a 3TB CSV to use as a sort of staging area and are attempting to migrate each VM to this in order to consolidate and recreate the individual LUN's into another CSV.
When attempting to perform a live storage migration we receive the following error almost instantly.
    Error (12711)
VMM cannot complete the WMI operation on the server (DGHVS02.example.com.au.local) because of an error: [MSCluster_Resource.Name="DTHV_EXAMPLEVM03_8abc6468-ae4a-41db-bd67-d787b81a6772"]
    Unknown error (0x1008)
    Recommended Action
Resolve the issue and then try the operation again.
There is nothing in the event logs on either server (VMM or HV host).
We have also attempted to start a debug trace but the VMM event providers are missing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    This has been solved.
    [MSCluster_Resource.Name="DTHV_EXAMPLEVM03_8abc6468-ae4a-41db-bd67-d787b81a6772"]
This is resource is added by DoubleTake to each VM which manages live replication to a DR site. Once replication was stopped for this VM storage migration worked.
    Hope this helps someone else.......

  • Kextcache error while updating /Volumes/Seagate CCC

Hi, my external seagate drive (2Tb partitioned into 2 * 1Tb's I've been using for Carbon Copy Cloner has a problem with kextcache, I will not pretend to know what kextcache is but the errors I am getting relate to an invalid signature, it tries 26 times before giving up.
I expect this explains why the drive is not bootable, any suggestioins as to how to fix the problem, can it be fixed?
    Regards

    08/02/2014 22:11:46.876 com.apple.kextcache[2964]: rebuilding /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/kernelcache

    Hi,
interesting: I have the same issue, however, I don't have any software from Freecom installed.
Here is my situation, which - to me - is quite bizarre.
Some weeks ago, I installed an SSD as the boot disk, moving my "old" HDD to the Superdrive bay.
This worked quite well. I then upgraded to Mavericks (from ML).
It's tough to say for certain, but my impression is that since I upgraded, things have gone quite awry.
I'm seeing these Error 107 messages from kextcache as well, repeating over and over periodically. What is very odd is this: the cache is trying to update on the HDD! I checked; there is a Library and a System directory in the HHD's root.
I figured I had forgotten to clear those out when I changed the HDD to be a data-only drive, and that Mavericks was using the System directory on the HDD because - well - it was there. So I deleted both the Library and System directories and rebooted.
This fixed Pathfinder's lockup error (after updating), but - much to my surprise - the System directory is back!
All it contains is a Library directory and that only has a Caches directory in it, which - no surprise - contains the com.apple.kext.caches directory. This subtree belongs to root with group wheel, so that should be ok.
    So:
    1) why on earth is Mavericks putting this directory on the HDD, and not on the SSD which contains the "real" system directory?
    2) why am I getting 107 errors?
Here is the relevant part of my log:
Apparently, I'm not the only one, I just found this discussion on what seems to be a similar subject:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5490448
    Thanks!

  • System image utility fails "Unknown error has occurred"

    Hi,
I can create disk images from 10.8.3 clients but when i'm putting them through system utility on the 10.8 server it fails after hours of running.
The log is set to debug and shows the image creates upto 83% then jumps to 100% and later shows unknown errors and failed to create image from restore souce.
I've created several disk images and saved them to different locations on the server as the source and final image.
Below i've put in the debug log. Someone please help!!

I am seeing a very similar output trying to make a netrestore image of a 10.8.4 Macbook Air on a 10.8.4 Mac Mini running OSX Server.  Gets to 84% and then shows the -1 progress and then just hangs until I cancel it (I haven't tried leaving it over night but left it that way for hours).
Did you ever figure out what was going on or have a workaround to create an image?
    Thanks!

  • IPod cant be updated (unknown error -50)

I made a fresh install of WinXP pro (with a nLite customized CD). I installed iTunes (current version) and my iPod Shuffle is recognized by the program. But if I try to copy songs to my iPod, iTunes says that my iPod cant be updated. The volume cant be read or written. Sometimes a 2nd error message occurs that says unknown error (-50).
I get no error message during startup of iTunes, the iPod is recognized by iTunes and Windows as well. All seems to be working, but it dont if I tried to update the iPod. I assume that a needed service of windows maybe missing, but dont know which one are necessary.
I also tried to reset my iPod. But this do not work with this version of iTunes. So I use the older program ipodsetup to reset my iPod to version 1.14 but this doesnt solve my prob too.
    Any ideas? Plz help!
    Plz help.

It's weird. I format my iPod and plug it into usb again. iTunes popup and asked for a name of the new iPod. I choose one and I choose autofill, too. Then iTunes filled up my iPod with songs. So far every thing was ok. But after this op was finished, I make some settings which needs to be saved on my iPod Shuffle and of course the same error occurs again. I cant put songs on it manually, this seems only to work on 1st launch of iTunes (u know every time u start iTunes the message "dont plug off iPod..." appears, where I got no errors messages at all).
I need ur support becuz I cant figure out the reason why this happens! I cant use my iPod becuz I cant choose which music has to be copied on it.

  • An unknown error occurred (-9808)

Please help me solve this problem. Every time I try to use the ITunes program to download anything I receive the following message: An unknown error occurred (-9808). When I run the diagnostic program I get the message that Network interfaces verified. ITunes connection verified. And secure link to iTunes failed. What shall I do? When I look at the diagnostic report it states that: Current user is not an administrator. However, I am logged in as the administrator. Also, Windows Firewall is on. iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall. If iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall, shouldn’t the problem be solved? I tried restarting the computer, but this doesn’t seem to solve the problem. I will keep trying, but it is very frustrating that I cannot download any of the iTunes/ iPod applications.

I am an avid PC user, but have been considering purchasing several of Apple’s products, including the iPad. This experience is not helping me continue my desire to purchase these products. I hope you can provide technical assistance. Thank You for your attention.

Problems connecting to the iTunes Store often stem from issues with the Windows firewall or a firewall in a router, a privacy filter (such as McAfee Internet Privacy Service or Norton Internet Security), an antivirus/antispyware utility, or a download accelerator. Start here:
iTunes for Windows: iTunes Store Connection Troubleshooting
iTunes for Windows: Connection Issues when using Internet Filters, Accelerators, or Firewalls
Tunes for Windows could not establish a secure connection to the iTunes Store
iTunes for Windows: Possible iTunes Store Errors
for some basic tips to start isolating the cause of the problem. What you may need to do is temporarily disable any such service and see if that fixes the problem. If so, then if it's a firewall/Internet filter that's causing the problem and you'll need to set the offending service to allow iTunes to connect to the iTunes Store.
    Hope this helps.

  • I've update iOS devices to 8.0 and now need to update xCode, but keep getting "unknown error -50" leaving me with a non-working internet connection - the only fix seems to be reboot of both iMac and router - any ideas?

Having updated all my iOS devices to iOS 8.0 I now need to update xCode to match. I've tried several times, and on each occasion have received an "unknown error -50" message after getting about 500Mb. After this my internet connection appears to be fully occupied, and the only fix appears to be a reboot of both the iMac (2.5GHx Core i5, 4Gb RAMm OS X 10.9.5) and the router (Netgear DG834 v5, firmware 1.6.01.34) At first I thought that the error had not stopped the download, but after waiting for 30 minutes the connection was still unresponsive, though traffic was indicated as passing through but the router status page, and no additional content had been added to the download. Anyone else having a similar problem and different ideas as to fixing it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Unknown error during 10.4.6 update and now machine doesn't startup

    Hi all
As with many people, the update broke my machine.
The update failed with an unknown error. Then no apps would start, so I rebooted, and now the PB won't start, just goes to the Apple with the spinning thingy beneath, and sits there forever.
And suggestions on how to fix this, shy of archive and install?
I can boot off a 10.3 firewire drive and look at the drive. I tried running the standalone update from this to update the 10.4.5 system, but the update won't run because I'm not running the correct system. Thanks, Apple.
    So, ideas?

First off, verify the directory is okay with Disk Utility. From there, if you're confident in Terminal, you may be able to recover. I've done it when my 10.4.4 update failed due to directory corruption.
[1] Copy the 10.4.6 Combo Updater onto the 10.4 drive, top level.
[2] Boot into Single User mode off the 10.4 drive.
[3] IF you get into single user mode successfully, proceed with fsck'ing and mounting the volume.
[4] Use hdiutil to mount the Combo Updater (ie hdiutil attach /MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.dmg).
    [5] Run installer to rerun the combo updater (ie, installer --pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.4.6\ Combined\ Update/MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.6PPC.pkg --target /).
[6] Reboot and see if it worked!
Basically, the idea here is that the Combo updater can overwrite clean copies of all the apps that 10.4.6 tried to update, but since the GUI is hosed you need to come at it from the command line tools of single user mode. So if, it works, you're up and running again. If it doesn't, then you're probably going to have to do an archive and install to get operational again.
    Best o' luck!

  • Error compiling movie: unknown error & Mercury Playback GPU acceleration

    Hardware
2014 Mac Pro, 12GB RAM, 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xenon ES Processor, duel AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB graphics cards
    Software
    Mavericks (10.9.4)
    Premiere Pro CC2014 (8.0.1)
I'm attempting to render out a moderately complex sequence. Raw footage was dslr h.264 MOV files. 30fps 1920x1080 from canon. It has some clips that are pulled from multi-cam sequences and a few that have warp stabilizer applied. 4 total audio tracks with some linked comps from audition. Whole thing is about 14 minutes. It should be noted that I render out similar sequences regularly without issue. However on this occasion whenever I tried to render out using media encoder ( for web h.264 MOV 720 30fps) I was getting an error at the same clip every time. Error Compiling Movie: Unknown Error. So I checked out the clip. It was one of the ones with warp stabilize. I turned that off and sent it out again. Render got further this time but hit a different clip with warp stabilize (after getting through like 2 other clips with warp stabilize enabled) and gave me the same error. I tried getting rid of cache files, saving to a local drive instead of a network drive, uninstalling and re-installing premiere even. (which btw if you check remove preferences then reinstall it def still has preferences so that's a total load.) Anyway I was doing some forum surfing and found several people going all the way back to PP 5.5 saying that the only solution they found was to turn off the Mercury Playback GPU acceleration. Tried that and it's currently rendering just fine but taking roughly 4X longer than with acceleration. The GPU acceleration is a big deal for me since our company relies on putting out a lot of volume quickly. Has anyone else experienced this problem and is it something you were able to fix without turning off GPU acceleration. Grateful for your input.

sorry I actually wrote that wrong. I am using the H.264 setting 720 30fps to create a web friendly .mp4. Alternately though I decided to watch and see if it was the same clip failing every time. It is. I went into the project and did a match frame for the offending clip. Dragged the a new version of the same content onto the timeline and copied the warp stabilize effect onto the new version. Well this time the encode got past the clip with the issue, however the next clip it hit with warp stabilize caused another error compiling movie: unknown error. I guess at this point my options are to turn off the GPU acceleration and wait for a render that takes more than 3x as long to render with software only, or to go through the whole timeline and replace the clips with warp stabilize (there are a bunch, the shooter wasn't having a great day on glidecam). Not a great solution on either end. Please let me know if I should file this as a bug report. Though it seems people have been having the same issues since version CS5.5

  • The iTunes application could not be opened.  An unknown error occurred

Has anyone else gotten this problem after downloading iTunes 7? I didn't have this problem with the previous version, and I tried to repair this one and the same problem still happens. Before the error box pops up, though, it asks me to agree to something. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

okay, erin, it sounds like you've already seen this article:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes fails to launch with an unknown error
... but even if you've had no joy with that, there are some other possibilities to check on.
That error has been known to be produced by having Total Recorder or the Volume Logic plug-in installed on the PC.
For a workaround for Total Recorder, see:

  • Itunes: An unknown error occurred (-50): external disk sleeping

    Hi All.
I posted this question about a year ago, but never got a usable answer.  However, now I have more info, and thought I'd give it another try.
I have an external disk that I attach via USB to my iMac running OS X 10.6.8, which is left on almost all the time.  When I don't use the computer for an extended period, despite having the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" unchecked in the Energy Saver system preferences, the disk in the external array spin down anyway.
Most of the time, when I return to the computer, the disks spin up just fine and there's no issue.
However, sometimes, when I return, I'll find the disk that was normally read/write is now available, but read only, and messages such as the following are in the console log:
         7/13/11 4:33:42 PM          kernel          disk3s2: I/O error.     7/13/11 4:33:42 PM          kernel      7/13/11 4:33:42 PM          kernel      7/13/11 4:33:42 PM          kernel          jnl: disk3s2: do_jnl_io: strategy err 0x5     7/13/11 4:33:42 PM          kernel          jnl: disk3s2: write_journal_header: error writing the journal header!     7/13/11 4:33:48 PM          kernel          disk3s2: I/O error.     7/13/11 4:33:48 PM          kernel      7/13/11 4:33:48 PM          kernel      7/13/11 4:33:48 PM          kernel          jnl: disk3s2: do_jnl_io: strategy err 0x5     7/13/11 4:33:48 PM          kernel          jnl: disk3s2: end_transaction: only wrote 0 of 12288 bytes to the journal!
The disk has my iTunes library on it, and iTunes complains  "An unknown error occurred (-50)".
If I eject this 3Tb disk from the system and then use either 'Disk Utility' or 'diskutil' to mount it, it comes back up just fine.
My question is, is there a way to use the 'remount option on the mount command to fix this?  If I try, I get
         #  mount -o remount,rw /dev/disk3s2 /Volumes/Audio4TbRaid0     mount: -o remount: option not supported     #
If not the mount command, is there some hidden option to 'diskutil' that will do this without having to unmount the drive first (and cause all the open windows into the drive to go away)?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just an update to this:  It's definitely a problem with external (USB 2 connected) drives that go into sleep mode.  When they spin up, they sometimes are in read only mode.
Unmouting them and mounting them again restores normal operations.
Annoying?  You bet.  Workaround?  Yeah, I guess...

  • Unknown error code 13014 problem, this is the first time I've ever seen it.

After I upgraded my PC, I copied old libraries and music files from the old hard drive to the new one. I installed the newest version of iTunes (8.0.2) and when I plugged in my ipod, I saw something I had never seen. Guess what it is?
    'Unknown error code 13014!'
I had no problems for using every function that my iPod touch and iTunes have (including Genius play list) and of course, I've been updating every version of firmwares and iTunes programs. After I googled about this incident, I figured out this problem should not be seen on the newest version of iTunes but I'm still surffering from it.
Temporally, I turned off Genius Play List and now, that error code doesn't pop up but of course, I can not use Genius Play list because of it.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, restored firmware, moved Library Extras & Genius.itdb and do them again and again. Of course, none of them worked.
What can I do? Is there anyone else who is experiencing same thing to me? How can I get my Genius Play List function back?
Please Help me. I'm desperate. :<

Did you properly prep your new drive first?
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.  If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
I think you should shutdown the installer then erase the drive per the above and start again.
