  • Use the command "Properties" in Windows Explorer to unlock the file

I'm getting this error where, when I start Photoshop, I get a popup saying "Cannot load Photoshop because the file is locked or you don't have the needed privileges.. Use the command "Properties" in Windows Explorer to unlock the file". I unlocked it's access to everyone for the 64-bit and the 32-bit version, still doesn't work. The only way to make it work is by going in Program Files>Adobe>Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64-bit) and manually starting it as an administrator.
Everything was working just fine until today. Please help!

If this worked before, and you have made no hardware or software changes you might want to reset the preferences.
Start photoshop and IMMEDIATELY  hold down the Alt + Ctrl + shift keys.  It is a little tricky but keep trying until you get a reset window.

Have three users with CS6 Design Standard having problem saving files to a network share. All three are running Windows 7 SP1. CS 6 has all current updates applied. Have searched google for solution but all suggestions so far have not solved problem.
Have confirmed that windows explorer preview pane is not enabled/turned off. Other users on the network have no problems saving file to shared folder. Users can save to desktop and then copy and paste or drag and drop to the share!

Further Google searching found this bit of information....and it fixed our problem!
Rather than deleting the files I renamed them as follows Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs_old & Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs_old
To fix and prevent this error from happening, the user will navigate to:
    C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings
Depending on what version of photoshop is causing the error to appear you will delete the following file:
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp (for 32bit version)
    Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs.psp (for 64bit version)

  • I downloaded an upgrade but when I try to put it in the applications, it says the file is locked. when I unlock it, it still doesn't let me drag it, and reverts back to being locked when I close the window. I am using Mac Lion.

I opened Firefox this morning and it told me I needed to download a newer version. I downloaded the new version. I got the image prompting me to drag Firefox to the applications folder. When I do that, it asks if I want to replace the old Firefox, I click 'yes' and enter my password. It tells me the file is locked. I open 'get info', unlock the file and enter my password. It claims I have read and write access privileges. I then try again to drag Firefox to the applications folder - it says the same thing about the file being locked. I check again under 'get info', and Firefox has reverted to being locked again. I unlock it again and without closing that window, i.e. when it is still showing unlocked, I try again to drag it. Same message.
Now I can't use Firefox at all because it has corrupted the old version I was using and I am unable to download the new one.
I am using Mac OS 10.7.2, Lion, on a MacBook Pro.

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

"Hello, Adda. Most users can use it without problems. Did you set strict permissions on your machine?
Also, is it a small SSD? you lose their speed benefit by not putting Photoshop's scratch file on it."
Most power users are having big problems, We don't put scratch files on our SSDs because we know that this will run those into the ground. They are not intended for the pounding of constant read / write cycles. We also switch off indexing and any other constant cycling technology. Again, SSDs are best use for static files. They are, in fact, intended mainly for super fast launch, which is what they do so well. Obviously, if all you have is an SSD, then you have to live with the shortened life.
I have my scratch files and my TEMP folder set to a huge and empty internal drive. I have my USERS folder hard linked to a different huge internal drive, where I also store MY DOCUMENTS. I have an even larger internal drive where I store MY PICTURES. This has worked flawlessly (and very fast) for CS5 and LR4 Beta 1. Only CS6 complains constantly.
"Yes, I agree, but sometimes, what sounds and smells like a bug is not one, hence the troubleshooting we're trying to do, before QE tries to reproduce it."
This one not may or may not be a bug. But since I own and run dozens of applications, and only CS6 is freaking out constantly, I would say that it is not normal behavior.

  • Photoshop CS 5.5 - "Could not save [filename] because the file is locked..........."

    Hi,
We have a few iMacs here all running 10.8.4 - we have PhotoShop CS 5.5 and all the artwork etc is saved on a shared server ( Windows 2008 r2)   and we are forever getting these problems......
Only in photoshop we get the following error message......
"Could not save [filename] because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privilege. Use the 'Get info' command in the finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders"
Can't see this been an access issue so really don't know whats causing this other than the fact it's just server based...
    Please please please somebody help.

I have been hqving this issue on windows after I upgraded to internet explorer 10 and using outlook (hotmail.com) to attach images to an email.
After a file saved via photoshop (i assum any programe not just photoshop will cause this problem) is attached in outlook to an email, IE10 will not let go of that file.  meaning if you update the image in Photoshop and try and save over the existing jpg you previously attached it will give this error, file locked or file permissions needed etc.
Just posting this info incase you are using email to attach files and then getting these permisssion problems.
I work around it by closing the outlook browser tab (the email), so it lets go of the file, I can then save ontop of the file no problem, I then open outlook as needed.

  • In photoshop CS5 i get Preferences cannot be saved because the file is locked

Hi my photoshop doesn't remember my preferences or anything (like previously opened files) since i upgraded my operating system, i get this message each time i quit: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders." but when i follow instructions and do it, it changes nothing. can someone @help me?

To where are you trying to export? An external hard drive? Is the hard drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
If you are simply attempting to export to the internal drive of your Mac, let us know.

    Hi,
I've allready read a lot about this, but I can't finde the answer :S
    Why can't I find it?
I use Windows 7, all the fixes are for XP or MAC. Ctrl+Alt+Shift won't help. I get the properties menu, not the prompt that asks me to delete/reset some files.
Does anyone know how I can solve this?
== Since when do I get this message? ==
Since 1hour, I pulled out 1gb RAM out of my pc, and inserted 2gb. Now I have 3gb RAM. And now I have the error. I restarted my pc for 4 times and I ran the program as admin.
It works as long as I'm admin, but I don't want to be admin when I'm working with it because that could cause a lot of problems.
I tried if other programs had the same problems but Adobe Fireworks works fine, InDesign and Illustrator works fine too.
    Please help!?
    Thanks in advance,

I just upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit last night.  I had been running Cs2 just fine on Windows 7 64 bit for a few years now.   In fact I used it last week.  Now after the upgrade is complete, I get this error message when I try to launch CS2:
Could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked. use the properties command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.
Of course, there is no mention of which file is locked.
I tried a repair install, it didnt help, same error.

HAve you tried resetting preferences?  Start PS and IMMEDIATELY hold down the shift ctrl alt keys.  Should get a reset window if fast enough.

  • Unlocking windows files doesn't work

Hi, I went to print some projects yesterday and my usb drive got a virus or two. Usually I would just unlock the files in Leopard and trash them, but I can't unlock the files with Snow Leopard.
    Any help?
    Thanks,
    Jaco

Firstly, this is a bit long (sorry), but will fix your problem.
I solved this problem using the terminal. In the mac os, you need to move something to the trash before deleting it. In unix, on which the mac os is based, you can delete anything in place using the command "rm", shorthand for remove.
To delete locked files that you can't unlock and delete using the mac os, you will need:
    Administrator privileges, including administrator password
    A locked file
    Extreme care
in addition to the "rm" command, you'll also be using the "sudo" command, which is short for "Super user do". Be very careful with this, as you will not be asked "are you sure?" when using "rm" or "sudo". any changes you make *are irreversible*. Consider yourself warned.
These steps assume that the files you want to delete are on an external drive, as mine were.
    1-
    open terminal
    Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities>Terminal
    you should see something like:
Last login: Wed Oct 14 23:43:36 on ttys000
    USERNAMEs-iMac:~ USER$
    2-
type "cd /" and hit enter
Last login: Wed Oct 14 23:43:36 on ttys000
    USERNAMEs-iMac:~ USER$ cd /
    USERNAMEs-iMac:/ USER$
    3-
type "cd Volumes" and hit enter. unix is case sensitive, and you'll need to give "Volumes" the capital "V".
Last login: Wed Oct 14 23:43:36 on ttys000
    USERNAMEs-iMac:~ USER$ cd /
    USERNAMEs-iMac:/ USER$ cd Volumes
    USERNAMEs-iMac:/ USER$
    4-
type "ls" and hit enter. This will list the contents of "Volumes". In case you haven't worked it out, the "cd" command is short for "change directory" and is used as the command line equivalent of opening a folder in the mac os.
Last login: Wed Oct 14 23:43:36 on ttys000
    USERNAMEs-iMac:~ USER$ cd /
    USERNAMEs-iMac:/ USER$ cd Volumes
    USERNAMEs-iMac:Volumes USER$ ls
    USB-DRIVE Macintosh HD
    USERNAMEs-iMac:Volumes USER$
Before we move on, we need to take a look at what we have.
    this line:
    USERNAMEs-iMac:Volumes USER$
not only shows us where we are in the computer, but also shows that the computer is waiting for a command.
    USERNAMEs-iMac:Volumes
means that we're in the folder "Volumes" on "USERNAMEs" computer. I assume that your username is not, in fact, USERNAME.
the $ symbol means that the computer is waiting for a command.
    this line:
    USB-DRIVE Macintosh HD
appeared after we typed "ls", short for "list structure"
in my case, there are 2 further folders inside "Volumes": "USB-DRIVE" and "Macintosh HD"
you may also have a few more, depending on what else is plugged in to your computer.
    5-
in order to delete the files, you'll need to navigate to them. my locked files were on my USB drive, which is where i'm assuming yours are too. If not, navigate to them now using "cd".
if you need to go to your user account's home folder, type "cd ~ ". " ~ " is the button immediately below the escape button on your keyboard, and you'll need to hold shift to type it.
if you need to go to the top level of your computer (the same as double clicking "Macintosh HD" in the finder), type "cd /"
if you accidentally open a folder and just need to go up one level, type "cd .."
if you need to see what folders and files are at your current location, use "ls" again
if you can't open a folder, because there is a space character in the name, type "cd 'folder name' ", including the single quote marks, where folder name is the directory you're trying to open.
remember that unix is case sensitive, so match the case exactly for any files that you try to open.

if you attempt this on a locked file, however, it will ask you to confirm. (i forget the exact message, as I have deleted all the locked files already...) even if you type "yes" to confirm, the file will not be deleted.
this is where "sudo" comes in. "sudo" should only every be used as a last resort, if you are really 100% completely sure that you want to do whatever it is that you're doing with it. used improperly, "sudo" can destroy your computer. it won't here, with what we're doing, but i'm just trying to get across that it isn't a command to be played around with. (it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye...)
type "sudo rm 'locked file 1'" if the file has a space in its name, or
"sudo rm locked2" if it doesn't. obviously, "locked file 1" or "locked 2" will be different for you. if the file has a file extension, type that too, for example, "sudo rm program2.exe"
    [snip]

    USERNAMEs-iMac:USB-DRIVE USER$ sudo rm locked2
    Password:
The password that is now being asked of you is the Administrator password. If you are not logged in as administrator, you will need to log out and log in as one to do this.
Type your password and hit enter.
You will be asked at this point to confirm deletion of the locked file. Type "yes" and hit enter
if you type "ls" again, you should see that the stubborn file is gone. If you open the folder where it was located using the finder, you should see that it's gone, too.
    8-
Repeat the "sudo" command for any other locked files that you need to delete. You will not be asked for your password again, unless you quit Terminal and relaunch it, but you will need to confirm each time.
once you have finished deleting files, you can just quit Terminal; you don't need to type a specific command to do so.
