Unreliable broadband - please help

Hi there, well my story started pretty much as soon as I had BT installed, it began with speeds varying between 750 - 1500 kbps which i thought was a bit slow but it was good enough to do the job so i didnt take it any further, however about 5 months ago now my internet dived to around 130 kbps which i couldn't even surf websites properly this super slow speed would strike atleast once - twice a day for hours at a time but on the whole my average speed was still 500kbps which i was disappointed with but i could still play xbox live and surf websites just about but then when i thought things couldnt get any worse i suffered from a 130kbps speed which lasted well over a week so i contacted BT i spoke to a person who assured me it would be sorted and i should see improvement by 9pm at night and he would phone me to confirm it had picked up, it took a little longer than he said but im not complaining it was sorted it went upto 5500 kbps by 12 pm the next day i was extremely happy having never seen above 1500 kbps when online before but this lasted only for 12 hours then it dropped to 700 kbps then this lasted another 12 hours at tops and dropped to 130 kbps again and plagued me for several more days. I then contacted BT again as the person i spoke to before obviously forgot about me so i went through the same steps ive done 3 times before having to check the test socket and she did speed tests on my line i assured her i've followed all the steps which i had from using no extensions to changing my ethernet cable i even installed a newer model of BT HomeHub 2.0, she assured me she would contact me by wednesday but i still havent heard from her or anyone, anyways she also said that she had placed me on a ten day stabilisation period However for the past 6 days ive received 1500 kbps for about 2 hours 700 kbps for about 2 hours and the rest has been 70 - 130kbps i just cant handle it anymore no matter what i do it doesnt work nothing gets better for more than a few hours and im back in the same boat, i just dont understand that if my internet speed can be put to 5500 kbps within 12 hours with nothing needing to be done on my end or no engineer why i have never seen this before and have yet to see it after or anything even slightly close to this figure and all this was done without needing to cause stabilisation plus when i talk on the phone there is a lot of interference always has been but i have changed everything at my end hardware wise even new microfilters so i dont understand how it's there. btw im on 18 month contract 20 meg internet option 1 i believe, thanks to anyone that can help ive tried to put all the information needed, sorry i waffled a bit lol.

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
 Additional Information:
 Your DSL Connection Rate :160 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

as your connection has improved dramatically in the test socket there is obviously a problem with your wiring of the extensions causing noise on your line.
The profile of 135 is due to the low speed you previously had but if you can remain connected 24/7 in the test socket for 3/5 days then your profile will rise as shown here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm
One of the main causes of noise is the orange wire on terminal 3 and this should be disconnected from the master and any extension sockets  http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/bellwirenutshell.html

  • Wireless router for Orange broadband - please help!

    Hi all,
I've recently purchased a refurbished MacBook. I'm really happy with it but I've just discovered that I can't use the SpeedTouch USB modem that Orange provided with their Starter Package and have been happily using with my PC laptop. Apparently it's something to do with the modem being incompatible with Intel processor Macs?
As far as I can tell there is no way around it (or maybe there is?) and I think I now have two options:
    1) upgrade my broadband package and get a Livebox for an extra £5 a month, or
    2) pay for an alternative wireless router.
The first one I don't mind doing but it'll be a hassle. The latter I'm not sure about as I'm not at all sure that an alternative router will work with the package I have with Orange. Can anyone who is more technically-minded give me some advice? Please??
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

USB modems are inherently troublesome and problematic since they usually require a firmware update after an OS update is released for Windows or for OS X depending on what is included with the update.
Ethernet modems are the way to go which don't require firmware updates.
But if this a combination modem/router, then a USB connection to your Mac is not in play.

Has the speed ever been acceptable, or is this something new?  Try resetting Safari and perhaps rebooting your router.

  • BT Broadband - IP Profile 500K - Please Help!

    Good Evening Everyone,
Have BT broadband up and running just under a month now, using a home hub 3, which is connected to the master socket, have also tried running in the master 'test' socket even with no telephones connected (these are all cordless with filters in the extension socket) but I can NEVER get a download speed greater than half a meg. Have tried connecting at various off peak hours but makes no difference.
I can use speedtest.net to test the line speed but not the official BT site, I can never get past the assured throughput test, an error message is always returned - however using a site to test the ping of the line I always achieve below 50ms and most of the time it is around 24ms. My question is this - Virgin provided the previous broadband to our home and we had the same problem and I note the IP profile which was 500k has been carried across to BT broadband - does this need resetting and how do I go about this ??? The home hub 3 spec are below if you can pick anything out from them - please help!!!!

  • Please Help! 3-Weeks Since Installation and Still ...

It's just over 3 weeks since I had my broadband moved to my new address and I'm still getting a shockingly-bad connection. All the way through my 10-day stabilisation period it was really poor (always well below 100kbps down) but I waited the full 10 days before calling India when they told me to wait another 3 days. After that extra 3 days I called again and they ran a line test and identified an issue which they described as a 'configuration mismatch which happens every 1 in a 100' - I couldn't understand his exact explanation for the issue was but he told me it had to be corrected at the exchange and to give it 48-72 hours for it to be fixed. After waiting three days and seeing zero change, I called back was told that it had been fixed but I had to wait another 48-72 hours for it to stabilize. So I waited 3 more days. saw no change and called again... this time another guy did another line test and ran through the usual questions, he identified some issue with the line (the same issue?) and said he had reported it the team that deal with line faults. I was told I'd get a call within a few days and that someone would either fix the problem or an engineer would visit. I did get a call back... the call came from India so I'm not sure if that was _the_ call or if it was just a follow-up to one of the earlier support calls (I was expecting call from UK?). Whatever it was, the lady said that the issue had been corrected at the exchange and that I should see a big impovement over the next 48-72 hours. I'm just about at the end of that period now and I'm again seeing no difference whatsoever. I'm dreading the prospect of another support call which results in another non-existant fix which takes another 48-72 hours and makes no difference.
I dont know if anyone can help and if so what info you'd need?
Here's some basic info about my setup, the results of my speedtest and some info from the homehub etc...
I'm on the Unlimited Option 3 (or at least I should be).
My homehub is the v1, i.e. white box with the 5 lights (phone, wireless, broadband, internet, data).
Wireless is now disabled on the homehub and I'm using the ethernet cable to my PC.
I've tried all the phone sockets in the flat and get the same result from all of them.
I've tried the connetion on my desktop, laptop and even via the wireless on my mobile, it's the same on all three.
Samknows puts me about 1.6 miles from my local exchange at Moortown (MYMOO)
I've tried the noise test on my line using the number I found on this forum, didn't hear anything at all.
I've tried disconnecting my Sky box from the telephone (which is in a different room) but still no joy.
The homehub has been up for the most part - I've only restarted it three times, twice at the instruction of the guys at BT support and once myself.

    BT Speedtest Results...
I was hoping to just upload a screenshot but thats impossible for me, so I'll have to type the results instead:

IP Profile for your line is - 3000Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 3.77:5.66:90.57 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic
This test was not conclusive and further testing is required. This might be useful for your ISP to investigate the fault."

As the subject says, "Please Help!"

    Hi JoeFoulkes
Certainly looks like something’s up here, your downstream speed doesn’t seem to be too bad but throughput speed is really letting you down.  I take it this is at all time of the day?
Not too sure what has been tried by our tech guys so far but if you drop me an email with a few details then I can have a look and get things moving.
Could you drop me an email to [email protected] with your BT account and telephone number and I'll sort it out.
    Cheers

  • Mail authentication problem - PLEASE HELP

I was trying to set up my email account on my new Droid phone. Apparently, it requires that the incoming mail server use authentication. I went into my Mac Mail account settings and changed the Advanced setting to Password. Now I can't receive any mail (though I can send). I also can't UNDO this change, None is no longer an option on the drop down menu. WHAT?
Please help. I tried adding a new email account, by my Mac tells me there's already and account with that email address and gives me no options for deleting/starting over.

That is the case, assuming you picked "Edit Serve List" from the "Outgoing Mail Server" list, then selected your SMTP server. I'm not surprised that you had "Authentication" for the outgoing mail server set to "None". If your broadband account is like mine, authentication depends on you being connected through the ISP's connection. Is that the entry you were unable to set to "None"?
    Yes, that's correct.
The settings for incoming mail servers are just above the field for "Outgoing Mail Server". The type of security is declared under the "Advanced" tab. Is the password declared there the correct one for your incoming e-mail?
    Yes.
That's normal. Why do you want anything different?
I meant that now I have two mailboxes and the new 'working' mailbox takes much longer to fetch new emails. I don't understand why changing the settings in the old mailbox doesn't fix the problem, and why I can't delete or change the new mailbox. I created it in haste and it doesn't show my name correctly. Yes, its a small annoyance at this point but I'm baffled as to why I now have two sort of mailboxes and why none of my edits worked (yet entering the exact same info in a new box did). Seems like Mail is f*ed up and there's no convenient way to reinstall.
Anyway, thanks for the help, I'm moving on.

  • Network Connection Was Refused - PLEASE help me this time...

To be perfectly honest, I'm quite irritated. I want answers. And if there is no answer, I want someone to tell me such. I've posted three times before, twice on someone else's topic, and once on my own. This is my last ditch effort. PLEASE help me. I really enjoy the use of your product, and I don't want to give up on it.
Many people are having issues with their network connection. I know I'm not the only one. Some diagnostics say the connection to iTunes works, but for some reason still won't open the music store. In my case, it says it isn't.
I went to my parents' house this holiday and stole their broadband high speed internet connection, hoping that the new connection might make iTunes work. Nope. So now I'm fresh out of ideas.
Here is the information I posted on an earlier post below. PLEASE help me answer my question. I'm really missing my iTunes. It's been a long time since I've had it, and there are a bunch of songs I plan to download if I am able to get it back. Thank you so much!
I downloaded the newest version of iTunes, without realizing that there were so many problems with it. The installation went off without a hitch, and it was able to open up my library. However, whenever I try to access the music store, the message "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The network connection was refused. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, then try again" appeared. I tried redownloading it, but that didn't solve the problem. I got frustrated, and finally was able to download 7.01. That didn't work either. So I downloaded the older version that I used to have. The same error message appeared. NOW I'm mad, because I can't even get the older version back. I want my older version back... I never had a problem with your products before, but right now I'm slowly losing faith. PLEASE help me.
I can't run a diagnostics on my network connection anymore, but I had posted my first diagnostics on the old post, referencing back to when I was still trying to fix the newest version. I'll post the diagnostics below the post.
I have a wireless connection, since I live in an apartment complex right now. I didn't have the same connection type when I first downloaded iTunes a year or more ago, but I was able to work iTunes under this connection before I uploaded.
Please help me. I want my music store back.

  • Best buy, please help me on this! very disappointed and frustrated!!

    Here is my complaint:
1.I have been saving for weeks trying to buy this flat screen TV: the price has been $299.99
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/westinghouse-48-class-48-diag--led-1080p-hdtv-black/6233067.p?id=1219198...
Then finally this Tuesday I went there to buy, I checked the online price, it jumped to $329.99. I do have a mover coupon which is good for 10% off a single item. So I used, but I will have been really happy if I could have used it when the price is $299.99 instead. This mover coupon said any single item with some exclusions and I believe this Westinghouse 48" is not in the exclusion list.
After I bought Tuesday, I checked the price online today, man, it went back to $299.99. Your price mathcing policy said if the price lowered within the return period, we could get the difference back. Then I went back to the Best Buy at Fairlawn, Ohio (Montrose) location where I bought my TV. But they refuse to return the difference saying I used that coupon.
But key issue here is not using the coupon. That coupon DOES NOT SAY anything about not using on a sale item at all!!!!!
If I return the TV today and they give me back that coupon, I would have been able to buy this one again at $299.99 AND using that coupon again!  So It is very UNFAIR they are doing that.
Very disappointed and frustrated. Please help me to get this issue straightened out!! I follow all the rules, but that store clerk did not seem to understand that coupon is good for on sale items too and that TV is not on the exclusion list so they should follow the price matching promise and issue me the credit!!!!!!

here is the detail of this mover coupon:

  • At My Wits End - Please Help Before I Contact OFCO...

I have been loyal BT customer since... well having a landline in my name.
We have been experiencing problems with BT / BT Broadband now for over 3 months. During this period we have had over 6 engineer visits an countless phone calls to BT Customer Services and also their Priority Care desk and the problem is still not resolved.
Over 3 weeks ago I also sent an email to BT asking for contact from someone residing in the UK that could assist with the issue. I asked for a response within 10 working days and stated failure to respond would result in contacting OFCOM, watchdog and/or Trading Standards.
The problem comprises of two issues -
1] very slow broadband connection - no more than 0.13Mb/s at best (and that is when we have a connection at all
    2] zero broadband connection
The telephone line crackles badly too, but as the landline is only there for the broadband this doesn't really concern us too much. We use our mobiles for phone calls.
A similar fault stems back to 2008 when we started experiencing slowing connection speeds, but after a service visit the fault appeared to be fixed until this time last year it slowed to a death again. Following another engineer visit connection stabilised at around 1Mb/s. Then 3 months ago the problem started all over again.
Whenever I call the customer service line, we get routed to their call centre in India where we just keep being fobbed off by engineer visits by engineers that are either not capable of doing the work or do not have the time allocated to do a comprehensive service.
We have been told a huge number of excuses (From aluminium in the ground running next to the cables to faults with our equipment in the house (which has all been replaced for new within the last 3 months) to "we can't find a problem") as to why the service is unstable and slow.
Another Engineer is booked for tomorrow morning, but I am fairly confident they will not solve the issue.
The lack of service is causing problems trying to sort out year end Self Assessment, book holidays, online banking etc... over and above communicating with family living abroad (via Skype) and general surfing - all things we can not do from work.
I have a brief record of all the attempts to resolve the issue including records of speed tests. I can also get the entire case history from BT if necessary (as I think they are compiled by law to hand over any notes they have taken). I also obviously have a copy of the email sent to direct to BT.
Can someone here please, please help or advise who I need to contact to get the issue sorted out for once and for all before I take the matter further?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1) What is the maximum speed you can get in your area? Type your number into the box on the right of the following web page:
    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=29017
It will tell you whether you can get BT Infinity and what your potential line speed is for your area.
    2) What package are you on? All BT packages are subject to a Fair Usage policy. Even if you are on the 'Unlimited' package your speed will be slowed down if you are a heavy user. Contact BT (call 150 from a BT landline) and choose the options concerning questions about products. Don't choose the fault options else you'll be put through to India. This way you will hopefully be put through to somebody in England as I was, and you can get the matter solved more easily. Try and find out whether your account / line has been put under Network Management.

  • Stop Error / Blue Screen of Death... Please Help

    Hello,
I have been having problems with my desktop computer ever since I Installed the BT Total Broadband software.
I have seen a similar topic regarding the Stop error and BSOD,but the problem there appears to be with a wireless connection with a laptop. I, on the other hand, am using an ethernet cable connection with a desktop, so I am not sure if the fix will also work for me.
The problem I have am having is that my computer frequently either resets or BSOD's, with an IRQ_Less_Or_Equal message. This usually occurs within minutes of any kind of internet navigation, and after it has occured once, the problem seems to persist, causing my computer to freeze during bootup, or crashing/resetting shortly after windows (eventually) loads successfully.
Please help, this is driving me crazy!

Thanx again for the replies guys, this is all very helpful!
Firstly, Im running windows XP, SP3.
Also, I have to admit the inside of my computer is quite dusty and could use a good clean.
Finally, its interesting to note that although my computer has a habit of crashing/resetting/BSODing quite regularly during online activity, sometimes the system seems to stabilise, and will run perfectly well for hours at a time.
However I have reached a point where the continual errors, and the resulting 100x crashes and windows failing to load has driven me to seek professional help (here, not a pyschiatrist )

  • Ipod error message when connected. Please help

    Windows XP
I have had my 30 gigabyte ipod for almost a year and i've never had any problems with it before. But recently our area wasn't able to get broadband. So i was unable to download the recent ipod and itunes updates. I have done that now.. but i think something has affected my ipod. When i plug it into my computer nothing comes up on my ipod screen and i can continue browsing music etc.. i know this isn't supposed to happen. And on my computer an error message comes up saying "USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. "
    Please help me!

Okay. So i'll tell you the steps i have taken. I've uninstalled all the ipod updaters i had on my computer, eg 2006 and 2005.. and i reinstalled the latest version of itunes. I also went to device manager and all that but it only came up in the list at "unknown device" and i uninstalled the driver and tried to reinstall it but it came up saying it was an unknown device again. I tried right clicking on it and going "scan for hardware updates" but it told me the one i have installed is the nearest match. I also tried connecting my ipod to my computer in disc mode which did nothing. But i have discovered my ipod charges when i plug it in.. but the computer freezes on the black dos screen (as it always has for me when i turn the computer on with the ipod plugged in) and the ipod remains charging. but it seems if i plug it in after windows has loaded it's not even recognised.
I'm sorry for making it so long but i really really need help

  • The internet on my Mac OSX v10.6.8 is running extremely slow. I have a macbook air 13-inch late 2010. Please help!

The Internet (firefox, safari) are loading VERY slow. At first I thought it was just my school's website acting up, but after talking to their technical support they had me delete cache and cookies, make sure all programs are updated including plug ins like adobe, flash plug in etc. All of these things didn't help when I did them.  On my school's website the videos do not load completely so they are choppy when viewed. After finishing an activity it won't load my score, during activities the page constantly has errors. It was just this website that was slow to load but now it seems like any website I go to is very slow. I am wondering if the loading problem is contributed to the computers memory, or lack of. However, I am not expert when it comes to computers so I don't know how to figure out how much free disc space I have/memory etc. I'm wondering if this is the problem.  I have increased my activity on this computer for school, including more documents, downloading etc. So do you think the slowness of the internet is contributed to the memory or disc space? I believe I have snow leopard. it is MAC OS X 10.6.8 with Memory: 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Please help! Thank you!

To find out how much space you have & what is left, open up Disk Utility/Machintosh HD/First Aid.  The info will be at the bottom of the window.
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
    Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top.  If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance.  Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
Too little ram - max out your ram.
Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!1

I'm getting really frustrated with my ipod. Well two days ago i noticed I was having this problem with it. Basically, my ipod will play songs but for most of them it will just skip the song completely. Like i tried playing a playlist with 19 songs and when i did that it just skips all the songs. So I tried restoring my ipod. that didnt work. i tried the 5 r's. and just this now i uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it. I also put that ipod configuration cd in the computer and connected my ipod. Now my iped is in the computer with the usb and its been maybe 15 minutes and the ipod is still in its DO NOT DISCONNECT mode. The autoplay thing came up but only lasted for a minute. Now the Ipod configuration bar isnt moving which means my computer isnt reading my ipod, i cant restore it, and its stuck skipping songs! please please please help me. its really frustrating. i really hate how apple has no hotline you can call. Whats even more frustrating is that the apple centers over here in malaysia are so unreliable. I brought my ipod to the shop today and they didnt know at all what to do. SO please help me out!!!!

I know that it's not working:
    Here, try this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Also, you can try to manually put the iPod into disk mode and then see if the computer can recognize it a little easier (just know that it might continue with the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" when you DO plug it into the computer and will not stop it). Here's the link with instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Good luck!
