"Unsplitting" clips (merging split clips).

To unsplit a clip that was accidentally split (either video or audio) you can simply stretch the tail end back to where it should be.
Procedure:
You have to use timeline view for this procedure.
In all cases select the appropriate audio or video clips by the usual method. The most common, simple case just involves selecting the clip, including the associated audio.
If it was accidental and is in two adjacent pieces:
*Select the portion of the clip to the right of the split.
b CLEAR
it, do
i not
delete it! You need to leave the original space.
*Then simply grab the right end of the remaining clip and drag it to fill the void. Done!
If it was intentional, or other cases where there is no space or not enough space following the clip:
*Use your favourite method of creating space.
](one of my favourite methods is to drag any handy clip that is longer than I need to where needed on the timeline and and then CLEAR it, leaving the space required. However the presence of multiple tracks can make life far more complicated than that.)
*Now that there is space (time) available, simply drag the right end of the previously split clip to wherever it should be.
*Finally use delete and close gap to get rid of any leftover space. Again, the presence of multiple tracks will complicate things a lot, so life is not always that simple.
In all cases be aware that any effects (with or without keyframing) will be based on the original segment of the clip. You may have to adjust keyframes accordingly.
The above applies equally to where the video and audio tracks are treated together and to situations where you have only selected the video OR audio (particularly applicable to accidentally having split a voice over or music over track).
Note: assumes clips are continuous. For instance if you used a "split" to bleep out a word, that is permanently two clips (use keyframing instead of split).

There's an button in the Clip Settings Tab of the HDV log and capture window to turn off the behavior of capturing separate clips at each start/stop location on the tape. Might try turning that off if you want longer clips.
I've an article about HDV editing in FCP coming in the next issue of the Creative COW magazine you can subscribe to for free here:http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newpage_wrapper.cgi?forumid=1&page=http://www.creativecow.net/magazine/cowmagsubscribe.html Might be a good read for you if you continue to work in HDV...
When you say chunks are lost... how long are these gaps?

  • Merging/splitting cells is inappropriate

Sigh. Pages is cloning the awful way that Word does the table cell merge/split ... it really should follow the FrameMaker model ... try merging three cells, then split them again ... it's just about impossible to get the table back to its previous form. FM, on the other hand, treats a "merge" as a "disable boundaries" command, which means the cell boundaries are still there, just not active so all the contents get mushed together. When the "split" is applied, all the original boundaries return so you have a nice clean and lined-up table again.

What you need to do is unmerge the cells, not split them. Then you can move it and remerge with the other cells.
With the cells selected, just click on Merge Cells again and they should now be individual cells. Then move and reselect the cells you want to merge.

  • Merge split image segments

    Dear Friends,
in an external PDF all images are splitted to smaller segments.
I heard this is quite common in PDF generation due Postscript.
I am placing this external PDF on an Indesign document page which is also exported again as a final PDF/SWF/JPEG.
But in the final PDF/SWF/JPEG there are white lines visible in the images, when they appear, allways between two image segments.
I heard this is due to rounding errors of position x-/y-coordinates of these image segments rendering them not perfectly onto their intended position.
I think about two general solutions:
Merge all image segments to a complete image.
Being able to position these segments with lock / automatically to make them perfectly edge to each other (but what would be with these rounding errors?).
This is a quite common problem to designers who want to further use the ressources or pages of an external PDF.
Often the senders of those external PDFs have not even got the original data (careless/lost/etc.).
It would be great if there is a reliable, solid solution to this problem.
Thank you for answers in advance!
    With best regards
    Inno

A naive (but possibly sufficient) implementation could just be to keep a table mapping (x,y) pairs to countries. To keep the table smaller, you could map 10x10 blocks of pixels to countries.
Ultimately this is about storing and then managing data.
One hack (in my opinion) is to check the color of the clicked pixel in the image of the map. But that is nasty for a variety of reasons (such as, it keeps you from being able to easily change the map image, and things like text in the map (like the names of countries) kind of screws that up. But it's an option.
You can also keep lists of pixels in sequence describing a polygon, and then use certain algorithms (which I don't recall right now) to determine whether a given point is inside or outside a given polygon.
Also you can do things like "binary space partitions", I think.
These last two things are computer graphics techniques, and are non-trivial to implement. I dimly recall them from college but recall no details. You can get a computer graphics textbook (which tend to be expensive) to get more info, or these days there's probably a wiki about it somewhere.
But I'd suggest keeping it modular. Add a layer of abstraction, writing an API around this functionality. Then write an implementation with a simple table of locations or blocks of locations, and if this proves to be insufficient later, swap it out with something more sophisticated.

  • Merge & split cells

If I select three cells in a row and then merge them into one, and then decide to split them back to their original arrangement, I can only split the merged cell into two equal cells.
    This seems nuts to me.
Is there any way to get the merged cell to split back into the original 3 cells?

    Shuncle wrote:
In the meantime, I will try not to merge any cells I may want to split later.
Not to take this too far off topic, but the design of Numbers includes several non-reversible features (assuming "undo" is not available or would undo more than you want). For example, enter the text "March 1" in a cell preset to the text format. If you later set the cell's format to automatic, the cell data is irreversibly set to a date.
More than once, I've selected a group of cells & accidentally made changes like this, usually when the selection is larger than what shows in the document window, & only too late to use "undo" noticed what had happened. (Should you be wondering, "March 1" means something entirely different from a date in a spreadsheet used to record cues for musical events!)
So I've learned to be very careful when making any of these changes, & to backup my Numbers spreadsheets more frequently than I would other documents.

  • Data Merge then Split Documents

    Hey everyone,
I'm using InDesign and Data Merge to create business cards for our printer, but we of course have the recepients proof them first.
I was wondering if there was a way where after the Data Merge, I could separate every 2 pages into their own PDF (front and back of card).
Even more awesome would be if the PDF filename could be "<<FirstName>><<LastName>>-BC-proof.pdf"
    Thanks!

in Acrobat X, there is a feature under the pages panel called split pages which lets users split a PDF into various sizes, whether it be based on amount of pages or file size.
As for titling the PDFs appropriately, the above method won't do that, BUT i'm sure i've read about this somewhere before on this very forum. Do a search of this forum for Data Merge Split or something similar... if I find it I'll post it here.

  • Using split/merge

What I want to be able to do is nudge certain notes left or right a tad in order to tighten up timing.  I've been trying to use the Split tool for this, but to no avail.
    * I can split the note I want from the rest of the track, and I can move that split section to a new track, extend or reduce the front and tail ends of the split so that everything flows continuously,  and then do a mixdown of both tracks to a new track.
    or...
    * I can split the note I want from the rest of the track, extend or reduce the front and tail ends of the split so that everything flows continuously, and then use the Merge/rejoin Split to restore the integrity of the track.
Problem: the second method doesn't work, because the Merge/Split command is greyed out and inactive.  What am I doing wrong?  The second approach would be a lot less work.

Aw, go on... *somebody* must know something about the split/merge function.  Here, look, I'll make it worth your while to respond.  You can go like: "Dobro, you ninny, you never ever get it.  This stuff is so simple.  Haven't you rtfm?"  And I'll go: "Well, I've read *some* of the manual, but the bit I read didn't help much, actually."  And you can sort of sigh heavily and look down toward the floor as if inspiration might be down there somewhere between your feet and the pizza crumbs.
And then you can tell me.

  • IPad event merge

iPad iPhoto event merging, splitting and event mamagment...is this possible on ipad considering you can't use a Cntl key?  If so, how?  Thanks.

I'm guessing that you are going through all of those steps because you have photos in a number of different events that you want to copy to the iPad and that those events also include photos that you don't want to go to the iPad?
    Two options to consider:
    1) Create an Event for photos that you want to move to the iPad and move all of the photos from where they currently are into that Event. This has the advantage of grouping all of the photos into one Event but the disadvantage that they are no longer in the Event where you may have wanted them for other reasons.
    2) What I do. Use the iPhoto "Album" feature. A photo inside iPhoto can be in one Event and in one or more Albums without occupying any more space. Create an Album (iPhoto File menu New Album) and name it something like "iPad Photos". If you desire you can create additional Albums and drag them onto the main Album to create sub-albums one level deep for better organization. Then simply drag photos from Events to the desired Album and they will be in both places. Then when you sync, select the Album (e.g. "iPad Photos") to sync.

  • Can you move events from one drive to another easily?

I've just bought an external firewire drive to dedicate to my Sony HD camcorder material.
I've only imported 30 mins or so of stuff onto the Mac's internal drive with iMovie '08, and would like to know if anyone's managed to easily copy 'events' from one drive to another to merge/split content.
Is it just a case of copying event folders from the iMovie Events folder to the external drive, but if so do you have to specify a particular path?
Similarly, can you just move the individual 'Projects' or archive to DVD etc as they will invariably take up lots of space for longer footage? Does the projects file just hold references to the assembled clips, in which case moving events would scupper things as I seem to have several movie files in there already though these may just be things I uploaded to .Mac to test out.
This may all be a bit of trial and error. Hopefully clips are only references unlike the pretty huge but self-contained iMovie 6 HD project packages. This also raises issues about how to easily backup all your 'events'.
    AC

    Observation:
Just imported 15mins of video from the Sony.
When you click import you are asked which drive to save to.
As well as the Mac's internal drive, all my attached USB drives which are formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) appear as targets to save to as well as teh Firewire drive.
I selected the Firewire drive and don't recall an option to create a sub-folder. After import a new top level folder of iMovie Events was created, but no others.
Presumably iMovie Projects/Shared folders only exist on the boot drive.
I'm assuming that this structure will allow you to share movie Events between Macs using external drives.
Again, an assumption but I suspect iMovie scans all available suitable hard drives and checks what content is available in top level iMovie Events folders for non-boot drives as well as this folder in the user's Movies folder.
    Rambling observations over for now.

  • How Can I Use IMovie with 6TB of Home Movies?

I have 6TB of home movies on a Thunderbolt WD hard drive.  Recently the thumbnails and video has stopped loading and I can't get IMovie to load it all up.  Is there any solution to use this much video with IMovie?

Thanks so much Karsten.   So the fact I'm doing all this now is basically a culmination of (a) old mini-DV technology which meant dealing with the tapes was a hassle for many years (b) Mom & Dad just taking alot of video of alot of the kids, family trips, births, parties, first day's of school, etc. over about a 15+ year period and (c) Now that we finally have the technology to start to deal with all these tapes WITHOUT making DVDs (I tried several years ago, just way to time intensive) and we have big hard drive technology relatively cheaply, I'm trying to tackle this.
The first step was importing 300+ min-DV tapes into IMovie, which took the better part of a year, on and off.  I now have three back-up drives of all that data.  (BTW, I am a die-hard MAC user so everything has to be MAC compatible).
My primary goal for the near term is really not to try to craft neat summarized videos of family events.  That will come later.  The initial goal it to get all of this into some understandable and usable format.  For starters, when pulled up in Imovie, this 15 years of video all just comes out as a gazillion NEW EVENT 3-12-2004-type headings, organized chronologically, which is essential, but with no ability to really know what is what.  I've gone through about a third of the headings and renamed, merged and split them into events with names like Billy's Third Birthday Party or New Zealand Trip Day 5 or Sally's First Day at School, etc. etc.  No editing of the actual content what-so-ever at this point.
What I have discovered, in the process, though, is that the kids LOVE to watch the unedited video of themselves as children...I have to turn it off to get them to stop watching.  Videoing them watching the video actually makes for great video, because they find it a laugh a minute, they vaguely remember various things and places and they have tons of questions about their past childhood.  That's largely what this record was kept for.
Thus, my immediate goal is to get it all into a format with Events all named properly so we know where important events are located, and from there, I'd ideally like to be able to convert key events to Iphone/Ipad/Apple TV mediums to the kids can watch some of it when they'd like - unedited.
The next step (maybe a year or so down the road) is to actually start to try to make the edited "Christmas Party 1998" video, vs. just the raw footage, for the wider family and friends that participated.  A single edited video though can take hours and hours I've learned the hard way.
The problem I'm having is that as I brought in the last 1TB or so of video (2010-2013) from my current Imovie library (which is all digital to start with, no mini-DV tapes involved), now IMovie has stopped loading all the thumbnails (it loads only a portion), so combining, merging, splitting and naming Events is very difficult.
I tried importing it all into FCPX using the free trial, but I found that for whatever reason, instead of ordering things chronologically starting in 1996 forward, that the dates only start in 2012.  Somehow FCPX doesn't recognize the encoded date the video was shot, but instead the dates that I copied it onto my current hard drive.    Can't figure that out, but it makes it impossible to then organize things easily by date since all the events are scattered all around, instead of in chronological order.
Sorry this is long, but this is the problem I'm facing.  I'd really appreciate an expert's opinion of how to tackle this!:)

  • Can you set a single FILEGROUP to READONLY without getting exclusive access to the entire DB?

I'm in the process of building a partitioned table with a sliding-window partition.  I have several years of historical static image data that will be moved to individual filegroups created to hold year's worth of data each.  The Business
requires that the last 60 days of images be updateable, everything older needs to be readonly which simplifies the backup process.
Since the PRIMARY filegroup is always READWRITE, I'm going to use the PRIMARY filegroup for the upper range of my partition to allow users to make necessary modifications to images in this 60 day window.  On a nightly basis, I'm going to run
a process that changes the upper range on the partition to the daterange = (getdate() - 60).  The 61st day moves seamlessly from PRIMARY filegroup to my 2013FileGroup in milliseconds.
The process runs almost flawlessly, however, I'd like to change the FILEGROUP to READ-ONLY after moving the data to the archive partition.  In my process, I can quickly switch this archive filegroup to READWRITE and run the Partition MERGE \ SPLIT to
change my upper range and move records between partitions.  However, I cannot change the FILEGROUP back to READ_ONLY without getting exclusive access to the entire database to save the change.
Is there any way to set a single FILEGROUP to read-only quickly without setting the entire DB to SINGLE-USER with ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE?  I've tried the WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE on the ALTER DB statement to modify the filegroup without any success.
I need WRITE access for a matter of seconds before setting it back to read only. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm dealing with a TB of data, a full restore could take 60+ hours to recover the entire db.  However, doing partial backups on the READWRITE portion of the DB is done quickly and I can get the business back online quickly by recovering the
PRIMARY filegroup and then restore readonly filegroups in the background.  If I can't change these filegroups to read-only on the fly, I may have to maintain more backups for extended periods of time and may need to wait for maintenance windows to set
    filegroups to READONLY.

I am moving it to Tools. Consider setting up a separate database for the 60+ days data.

As per BIP10g documentation the definition of a parameter in a template can only contain ONE default value:
