Update checking

Hey guys
Me and my team have a problem. We run a web-based java application.
The current process is like so:
The user loads a web page on the intranet, the web page which has an active-x script in it, downloads a jar file from our server and deploys it.
The problem is, that each time the user will open the page, it will download the jar file even though we have not updated it with a new version.
We would like to write code that will save the jar file on the user's computer with a certain signature, and each time the user opens the page, it will compare versions of the jar file with the server. thus, deciding wether to download the jar file or not.
is it possible? and if it is, any suggestions?
thanks

Why aren't you using Java Web Start?
Are you not running the application, just trying to download the jar?

  • Firefox 34.0.5 says Adobe Flash plugin is blocked, but update check reports my Flash plugin (ver. 16.0.0.235) is current. How to fix???

About 1 month ago, I updated Flash and Firefox to most current versions. Firefox 34.0.5, running on WinXP, SP3, shows Adobe Flash plugin as ver. 16.0.0.235, but this is now being blocked again. No other versions of Flash are evident. When I choose option on Flash screen to check plugins are up to date, Firefox reports Flash plugin is up to date.
This program behaviour is wrong and should be fixed. Checking at Adobe, current Flash is 16.0.0.305.
Who or what is broken here? Is Firefox broken, and not reporting correctly that more current Flash plugin is available?
I do not appear to have previous versions of Flash installed on system. This combo of software was working correctly for a while, and then became broken, without a proper path to allow users to resolve it. If Firefox is rigged to "Block" a plugin, then it *MUST* be configured to easily and **CORRECTLY** allow that plugin to be updated. Using most current software, my clicking on the "Check for updates" feature reports that Adobe Flash is most current version. Arrrrgh!!
I am now back to "diagnose and fix broken Firefox+Flash" exercise, which I just went thru.
Best solution here would be to allow user to easily override the "blocking" mechanism. This would assist users who only use Flash video access on trusted sites.
If there is an obvious solution to this current Flash "BLocking" goofery, please inform. Otherwise, if and when I resolve this, I will post a reply to my own question here, indicating what I did to fix this, as it appears to be affecting other Firefox+Flash users, without a clear solution being posted.

Adobe issued 3 new Flash 16 versions in January alone, then another new one - .305 - in February, ''along with one in early December. Five new versions in 2 months time''. So with updating Flash "about 1 month ago", you are probably 2 or 3 versions behind the latest Flash 16 version.
Note that Adobe has its own internal updater, which by default is set to check for an update ''(only)'' once a month. Adobe does their own updates for their software, Firefox just tells you when your version is on the blocklist due to known security issues with the version you have installed. It is up to you to do a manual update between the monthly update check that Flash does for your installation.
The "solution" is for Adobe to fix their stuff. Like maybe an updater that checks for updates more frequently, and not hide their updater user preferences where users don't know where they are and be able to set it for more a frequent update check cycle. ''[Firefox "checks" every time Firefox is launched, as does Chrome]''. Or fix the code in Flash that leads to it being so exploitable, and not have to do 5 separate security fixes in as little as a 2 month time span. ''Flash went almost 2 years prior to Dec 2014 without Mozilla needing to blocklist it, and when Mozilla did first blocklist it in Dec it was / is a soft-block where the user can still use it by using Allow per Flash presentation.''
My advice is to grab the Extended Support Release - Flash Player 13.0.0.269 from here - https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html - over 3/4 down that page. IMO the best version for WinXP users, as the later versions have features for Vista and later versions of Windows - won't work on WinXP or may cause problems on WinXP.

  • Software update check via iTunes with error message (1664).

I had a recent experience with my new Ipad '4'. It is running IOS 6.0.1. When I perform a software update check via iTunes, it returned a message saying that an unknown error had occured (1664). When I connect my iPad 2, and did the same check, it returned the nomal "softawre is current version (IOS 6.0.1)" message. However when I checked the software update via Settings in my Ipad '4'. it returned the msaage "your software is up to date". I had completely rebooted (totally switched off) the Ipad '4' and it still gave me the same message via Itune. not sure what is truly going on here.

  • Can you please tell me how to shut off the plug-in update checker?

I like to check plug-in updates from time to time on my own. The "plug-in update checker" that pops up simultaneously EVERYTIME I open Firefox is VERY annoying. Though I have tried, I can't figure out how to stop that from happening. It is so annoying that I have considered going back to using Internet Explorer which I do not like. Please help me disable, turn off, delete this feature. Thank you

You can go into your Audio Preferences and disable the UV bridge. There is also the option in the drop down menu next to the speaker icon that allows you to mute just the telephone audio. This would make it so just the VoIP audio is heard, but I believe the telephone audio is still recorded.
This sounds like you either need to disconnect the phone from your room or call into the phone bridge as a host/leader. Ultimately this is a function of your phone bridge, not Connect.

With ASA 9.0 and AnyConnect, you have to enabled SSL on the IKEv2 Profile, it seems that disabling this disables the ability to deliver the Profile, with is enabled on the IKEv2 Profile, the actual profiles get delivered without error.
Previously I only allowed IKEv2 connections and had SSL disable on the profile itself, now in order for the profile to get delivered to the end user, it must also be enabled.

  • Turning off automatic update checks

How do you turn off automatic update checks?
Not only do these pop up on their own even though I have all the 'update' options in iTunes set to manual, but when they do pop up, they do so in a top priority fashion, kicking me out of whatever else I might be doing.
Why can't such updates be done solely when I am going into iTunes?
    Thanks

    Welcome to AD!
It might not be the updater from iTunes. When you install iTunes, you also get a little program called Apple Software Updater.
You can uninstall that from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. You will still be able to go into iTunes and check for updates with it gone.

  • A KISS systray pacman/aur updates checker for KDE

I have created a simple python-QT script that places an icon in the system tray and informs you when updates for both pacman and AUR are available. Also I created a bash script that does the real package updates checking. The python script depends on python 3, kde which must be installed and PyQt4 perl module. The bash scripts depends on cower.
I could have built the whole functionality in only the python script, but I thought that the best way was to separate the checking and the notification parts to keep it simple and flexible.
I thought that I should share them as they are very convenient for me and they work well for a long time now.
    They feature:
    - automatically checking for updates both for arch official repos and AUR
    - notifies the user by changing the icon accordingly if there are updates available
    - by clicking on the icon you get a balloon with a list of the availabe (and ignored) updates for packages
    - automatically refreshes after every pacman upgrade/installation/removal of packages
    - ability to ignore some updates for packages that you don't wish to upgrade and not get notified for them (but they still get printed as ignored on the list in the icon's balloon)
    - no root permission needed
    - it only CHECKS and does absolutely nothing else. It does not change your system, your packages or your pacman database.
Here's a quick summary of how they work:
The bash script calls checkupdates and cower -u to produce a list of available updates both for arch official repos and AUR and it stores this list in two temporary files. The python script simply checks those two temporary files each second and gets the package names and updates count, which in turn notifies the user for them. It also checks each second /var/log/pacman for modification (for a way to know when there's been a change in the installed packages) and if it is, then it calls the bash script to update the temporary files.
    Instructions:
    1. place the python script somewhere in your system and add it to the KDE Autostart.
    2. place the bash script also anywhere and add it to a cron job that runs hourly (or whatever other interval you wish)
    3. change the paths in the python script accordingly to reflect correctly the paths of the various files your system
    4. optional: create a file for the ignored packages, where you can list each package name in a new line for those packages that you wish to be ignored. Also don't forget to update the python script with the correct path for this particular file.
And that's it. From now on you get a nice icon in your systray that is green when you system is "up to date" and yellow with exclamation mark when updates are available. I hope you like it.
Tell me if they work for you, or you have issues so I can fix them.
Also if you want something to be added or have some good idea or maybe you would want them to work for other DEs, I am open to ideas and suggestions for expanding them and making them better. But remember I am keen on the KISS idea and I will keep them as simple as possible.

Yes, sorry for my dumb question. I guess I actually wanted to ask if you planned to maintain an official Qt5 version. Also, might be useful to add your script in the AUR and to reference it in the wiki.

  • Software Update Checks for Updates at Start Up Even When Off

I had problems with Software Update struggling to updating my Macbook's firmware (I solved it by updating the firmware outside of Software Update with Installer), I am now having problems with Software Update.
Software Update checks for updates everytime I start up my computer - even when I have Software Update checks turned off in System Preferences. Is there a way to correct this?

I, too, am having this same problem. However, I'll need a little patience from everyone. The last Mac I used was an SE30 and now about 15-18 years later I have 3 PC desktops and 3 PC laptops in my house. But... I'm exploring getting back to Mac and have a MacBook Pro that's exactly 10 days old. No problems until 2 days ago and now every time I boot, the little software update icon is bouncing on my Dock. It searches and then tells me there are no updates to install. Pretty annoying having it do this every start up. I've checked apple>system preferences>software update and unchecked it (so that it should be off). Still shows up on next boot.
So, I tried to follow your suggestion about top level HD > preferences, but haven't quite figured out the Mac OS enough to know where these preferences are that you're directing me to. Could you possibly be a bit more granular for this Mac novice?
Thanks a ton. These little system annoyances are why I've decided to try and break the PC grip on my life and it's a little disappointing to already have one on my mac. At least on the PC I know how to get rid of these things, but I'm still learning this Mac stuff.
    Thanks again,

  • Big problems stemming from Google Update Checker -- any ideas?

    Hello,
My computer is having severe issues after receiving an error message involving Google Update Checker. Please let me know if you have any idea how to solve my problems!
So yesterday while working on my computer with many programs running (Finder, Safari, Firefox, X11, Matlab, Mail, Bibdesk, TexShop, Desktop Manager, RSS Menu, possibly others) I received an Error Message saying close the following:
"The Google program Google Update Checker has quit unexpectedly. A report has been made and is ready to be sent", with options to "cancel" or "send report".
At first, I clicked cancel. Between 30-60 minutes later I received the same message, I pressed cancel, then again, and I pressed "send report". I restarted, shut down then restarted, restarted again and still received the message. Long story short, I kept getting the same error message every half hour or so.
Finally I went to Applications and manually put "Google Update" in the trash, since the only google software that I explicitly know of on my computer is Google Earth and Gmail Checker, neither of which I had run recently. This turned out to be a good idea, and now Finder continually stops responding and relaunches. It does so frequently enough that I am unable to open the trash to restore the Google Update app, or a finder window at all. Additionally, using Activity Monitor it says that FInder is using 99% of my CPU.
I tried to restart it in safe mode by holding down "Shift" when booting, but OS X never booted in this circumstance.
Any help on this matter would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Patrick

    BDAqua,
Thanks for setting me straight on the dual cores
I went ahead and created a new Admin account. When I logged in with that account I had zero problems and everything behaved beautifully. I checked the "login items" on this account and none were present, so I went back to my normal account and removed login items (nine total) one by one, logging out and logging back in between each try. Even with no "login items" present, the problem persisted.
I went back to Activity Monitor to check which processes were running, and saw the following:
    Activity Monitor
    SystemUIServer
    UniversalAccess.app
    loginwindow
    ATSServer
    pbs
    mdimport
    launchd
    Google Update Helper
I logged back out and logged into the diagnostic account (again, no problems with Finder) and checked the Active Processes. There were the exact same processes running in that case, too.
When I opened Console, Finder was already doing its crashing routine, so here is a tiny tidbit from the Console:

  • Inforecord update check

    Hi everybody,
When I create a purchase order and I select vendor and material, the inforecord update check is set automatically (using B or C). I want to know how I can change this ID (B or C for empty) because I dont want to purchase order will be set in the inforecord as the last reference (I know that I can change it manually, but I want to system doesn´t set it automatically).
When I run in debbug I only can see program select the ID from structure mepo1319_pbo.
    Thanks,
    Lili.

    HI,
Yes I know that there is a SPRO option to set the conditions for plant and the update inforecord check depends on this settings. The options that the SPRO shows are only to set the update inforecord check, using empty, + or -.
How can I do to dont set the automatic infoupdate check in the PO without EVO parameters or manually process, because I see that PO always create with update inforecord check.
    Thanks.
    Lili.

  • Problem with CS3 installation. Update Check doesn't accept serial number

    Hey,
I have CS3 which I need to instal from one mac to another. It already has been deactivated and installed again as well. But after entering serial number I can see window called Updade Check and here my serial doesn't work. Technical support does not longer support old versions so they can't help me. But I need to run CS3 on this mac anyway. Can I skip Update Check step anyhow? Or what can I do to run this? Problem is I already cannot even use it on previous machine 'cause it already has been deactivated.
Does anyone know what should I do in this situation?

I want to but there is no option for that. I can't go futher without it.
Actually I don't even need to update anything but it seems I have no choice

I'm getting a message that my Java is not updated, but when I run the update check, I'm told all is updated. Some web materials won't open because my Java is not updated. What do I do?

    Hi Ginny,
There are no more updates for Java from Apple for 10.5.8, the only way to get a Java upgrade is updating your OSX.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they do still have it:

And it's been reported that if you have a MobileMe account Apple will send one free.

  • Disable plugin update check

Hi, We are using firefox on centos linux on around 1000 computers. We are using Firefox 10.0.7 ESR. For our applications we need JRE1.6_17.
The problem is, that some of our intranet pages stopped working. I found out, that java plugin was disabled. It was disabled because the user clicked yes when asked that the plugin was old and it will be disabled.
I tried changing "plugins.update.url" in about:config, but firefox still found, that the plugin was old.
So my questio would be:''' Is there a way to disable plugin checking (at least for java plugin) in about:config or using some config file?'''
I know it is possible to do this by clicking, but if someone wants to do this on 1000 computers using multiple user profiles with the machines spread acrosss 500 kilometers, please contact me.

Everytime you upgrade Firefox, it will do a addon update check.
before you upgrade to the new Firefox version.. Modify the prefs.js or user.js file in the logged on users firefox profile .
There may be one or both of these lines already in the prefs.js file.
    currect version installed 10.0.3:
    user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "10.0.3");
    user_pref("extensions.lastPlatformVersion", "10.0.3");
    Modify the prefs.js or user.js
    Installing version 15.0.1:
    user_pref("extensions.lastAppVersion", "15.0.1");
    user_pref("extensions.lastPlatformVersion", "15.0.1");
modify this to the version you are going to install before you do the install.
