Update could not be installed pls make sure no other copies running

I have version Firefox 10.0 and it is trying to update to 10.0.01 but msg states update could not be installed. Please make sure no other copies of FF are running. I had this problem before V10 was updated and re-installed FF at that time. Why does this continue to happen. I tried restarting and Run as admin but nothing works.

Hi,
Please try deleting the '''parent.lock''' file in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder Firefox Profile Folder]. You can also open this folder via Firefox '''Help''' ('''Alt''' + '''H''') > '''Troubleshooting Information''' > '''Open Containing Folder''', and exit Firefox.

Thanks for the info about Trojan. It may be the problem. Meanwhile I went to Admin/Owner side and did some cleaning -- including trying to reload my Favorite/Bookmarks that have always carried forth from previous levels of Windows XP and earlier.
The new computer here did not grab the Bookmarks from the previous, and yesterday I thought I had them loaded, and today went to Worker-Bee side and they are not showing.
About those add-ons... I have no idea, but think I got everything up to date yesterday. I will look at your earlier reply tomorrow or this weekend when I have more time at home to learn from it.
Thank you for your time in helping.

  • When I try to open Firefox I get a message: "Update could not be installed. Make sure there is not another instance of Firefox. Restart and try again."

    Started w/FF 29 something.on Win XP (Home) SP3
Verified w/Task manager and PS that there is no other instance of FF.
Occurs only in my profile, administrator and other users do not get this message.
    First Resetting, did not work.
Safe mode also did not work.
Uninstalled completely, even deleted the Firefox folder from my profile and rebooted.
Downloaded new versions, installed and same issue.
Firefox now version 33, all seems up to date but I still get that message. When I open Help > About it says I am at version 33 and to restart to upgrade...
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Have reverted to SeaMonkey for now.

Hello sprytely, go for a clean re-install, this means you '''remove Firefox program files''' and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from the next full installer https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • On starting FF, get error 'the update cld nt be installed.Make sure no other copies running' even from cold. Have reset but still persists.

On starting Firefox (Windows 7), even from a cold boot I get a dialogue box with the message 'The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer and then restart Firefox to try again'
I have checked task manager and there are no other copies.
I have downloaded the latest version 29 Firefox but the error persists.
I have reset Firefox to default state but the error still persists.
    Help please!

There are a few old methods for troubleshooting this but no longer maintained:

Sometimes there are other programs that might be preventing the update, as well as a need for a clean reinstall. However it is odd that this has happened two versions in a row. Does your firewall or antivirus allow updates to Firefox? [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls]
If you restart the computer does the error message still happen when you try to update from the About Firefox page?

I click on Firefox and it says that Firefox is installing your updates and will start in a few minutes. Then I get "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." this cycle never ends. Do I need to deinstall Firefox and re-install? If I do that, do i lose all of my bookmarks, etc?

  • "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again"

I'm using Firefox 4 Beta and I tryed install update but I dont got success. Now every time that I go start the browser is displayed the mensage: "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again"
My release is installed not in default drive C:\. I installed in the other Partition on my PC.
I don't have other release installed.

    Try a clean re-install.
    * Download the setup file from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/RC (this is for the Firefox 4 release candidate)
    * Uninstall Firefox, do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data"
    * Delete the Firefox installation directory - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory
    * Re-install Firefox
This process does not remove the Firefox user data such as bookmarks and passwords which are stored elsewhere in the profile folder.
You may also need to manually reset the Software Update feature by deleting the software update files as shown in the "Software Update not working properly" section here - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update

  • When I click on Firefox it opens with a box that says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments-. " then it says "Software Update Failed (in blue) with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle) The update could not be install

When I click on Firefox the first time it says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments…. (with a green bar)" then it says "Software Update Failed (in blue) with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle)
The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." When I click the ok, Firefox opens up. If I open another Firefox window with the previous one still running, it doesn't give me any of these messages, it just opens normally.

If you can't install on top of the current installation then you need to delete or rename the current Firefox program folder to do a clean install.
It is possible that your security software is using or locking files, so you can try to temporarily disable that software during the installation.

  • When I open firefox I get an error message "update could not be installed check for duplcates"

Error message: The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox and try again.
I have uninstalled all versions of Firefox. Then went to the Internet through Explorer and downloaded from scratch. A few days later I started getting the message again.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • "The update could not be installed" message

Every time I start Firefox I get a dialog box with this message:
The update could not be installed. Please make sure that there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer and then restart Firefox to try again. [OK button]
I click the OK button, the box disappears, then Firefox starts up.
It's annoying. I have tried updating Firefox in the Admin account on this computer, but even that has not worked. Why might this be happening, and what can I do about it?
PS I don't do online forums, if you are a "Firefox expert" answering thsi question, by all means post the reply on the forum, but please also email it to me at my registration address. Thanks.

So this is rapid updating? I had to stop using V5 because of problems. V5.01 did improve things. FF was still my default browser so I did get to follow the upgrade to V6. Now the suggestion that completely removing it and editing the registry will enable me to see if V6 is worth having. Please, this is not rapid. This is the kind of problem that stopped me using Norton, having to deal with more issues that actually using the software.
No doubt I will attempt this sometime, by then though I may have just got used to Chrome [yuk]. It is not a good sign that being more news worthy is better than having a working product. I'm a web and app developer and it has served me well until V4 now it is just getting in the way and Mozilla seem to think that just one more rapid release [with problems like this] may just solve the problems.
I think not after all I'm still waiting for MS to fix things that should have been better 10 years ago.
I removed my current version. I check that the folders were gone. I reinstalled. I got an error:
Error Platform version '5.01' is not compatible with minVersion >=6.0 maxVersion <=6.0

If updating isn't working then you need to download and install the full version.
If you intend to try out beta or nightly releases then you should be aware of this.<br />
Such issues can happen more often or the browser can stop working entirely (that is usually corrected with a respin).

  • Update could not be installed

When starting FF 3.68 using quick launch icon, I get this popup before the window loads. I have tried to follow the instructions in this page:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Software+Update+Failed?s=update+could+not+be+installed&as=s

Try to run Firefox once as Administrator (right-click the desktop shortcut > Run as Administrator).<br />
If that didn't work then do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.

It was due to using an old version of Adobe Air. There really should be a tighly coupled error that either updates Adobe Air for me, or links me to the update. I was only able to find the solution using intuition as a techy.
Now I can install the Muse demo.
