Update nowait only with for update?
Hello,
Aparently there is no "nowait" option for simple sql update statements. It exists only in "select .... for update nowait".
As oracle does a implicit row lock anyway upon execution of a normal update statement, i thought it would be handy
if I could write the following statement in order to not have to wait if another session is locking the current row:
update my_table set attr_y = 'val_z' where my_key = 123 nowait;
As this doesn't exist, I tried the following:
declare
v_key number;
begin
select my_key into v_key from my_table where my_key = 123 for update nowait;
update my_table set attr_y = 'val_z' where my_key = 123;
commit;
end;
When I block this record with another session (update without commit), this perfectly works,
I get the desired exeption.
Now this is probably not "the way to do this". Are there any other solutions?
Thanks for any help,
Martin
What you are performing is typically called "pessimistic locking"
Tom elaborates a bit on the differences between optimistic and pessimistic. Either approach is valid and can be used.

Difference between FOR UPDATE NOWAIT and no FOR UPDATE NOWAIT
Hi,
I have a quick question relating to the difference in SELECT statements and the use of FOR UPDATE NOWAIT.
Example:
If I query the following
SELECT * FROM ZX_LINES WHERE APPLICATION_ID = :B4 AND ENTITY_CODE = :B3 AND EVENT_CLASS_CODE = :B2 AND TRX_ID = :B1
/ with binds parsed, the result in Autotrace is as follows:
consistent gets 87
consistent gets - examination 2
consistent gets from cache 87
However, if I query the following
SELECT * FROM ZX_LINES WHERE APPLICATION_ID = :B4 AND ENTITY_CODE = :B3 AND EVENT_CLASS_CODE = :B2 AND TRX_ID = :B1
FOR UPDATE NOWAIT
/ the results in Autotrace are:
consistent gets 4341
consistent gets - examination 2
consistent gets from cache 4341
db block changes 5894
db block gets 5920
db block gets from cache 5920
So, I'm trying to understand why it happens that a FOR UPDATE NOWAIT requires so many more consistent gets, as opposed to not using a FOR UPDATE?>
So, I'm trying to understand why it happens that a FOR UPDATE NOWAIT requires so many more consistent gets, as opposed to not using a FOR UPDATE?
>
The main difference is that when you use FOR UPDATE Oracle has to LOCK each row.
How many rows will your query return?
Did you notice that in the second example ALL of the consistent gets were from the cache?
Did you notice all of the block gets? And that ALL of them were from the cache? -

Cursor with for update clause problem
Hi all,
We are having this problem with Oracle 8.1.7 where in we have a cursor with for update clause. The PL/SQL script used to work fine with Oracle 8.0.5 but is causing problems with Oracle 8.1.7. What the script is ending up doing in 8.1.7 is that it updates only one record instead of updating close to 60000 which it used to do in Oracle 8.0.5
The script just hangs after updating one record. We have replicated the same problem.
Has anyone seen this error before and attained resolution?
ThanksHello ,
I have found the same / very close to the same problem. I tried the code below in Oracle 10.2.0.1 and got the following error after the first loop.
ORA-01002: fetch out of sequence
ORA-06512: at "DEMO_TEST_RESEARCH_PKG", line 18
ORA-06512: at line 7
After trying to debug it , i thought i would try it in Oracle 9.0.2.0.7.0 , and to my suprise it worked fine.
Am i missing something ? Thanks in advance , ...
I have included the code i was running ...
PROCEDURE WhereCurrentOf(Param1 IN NUMBER) IS
v_title_eng ISSUES.TITLE_ENG%TYPE;
v_issue_id ISSUES.ISSUE_ID%TYPE;

Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Hi all,
I have a WSUS installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box, I have a new Windows Server 2012 box (joined to domain) that cannot get updates from the WSUS, whenever I try to search for new updates I receive the following error in event viewer:
Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800B0001
Note: I cannot see the Win2K12 server in the WSUS console under computers node.I couldn't get it to run even after installing the mentioned KB fixes. So I investigated the error myself, and found a "hack" that seems to fix the issue. Wrote up a small piece on it here:
http://tplive.azurewebsites.net/2013/12/windows-update-error/
You and about a thousand other people have reported "I had already installed [the update], but installing it AGAIN fixed the problem.", which is almost assuredly a simple indication that the original installation of the update failed, and you simply did
not recognize that the installation of the update was not successful.
The fact that the /selfupdate folder was corrupted (read: missing files) pretty much says it all. There's no bug. Your installation of the update simply failed. (Or, the server wasn't healthy to begin with and you got what you got.)
Bottom line: The only known cause for a client-side 0x800B0001 error code is that the WSUS server has not been
properly and completely patched.

Hi,
i have 2 session(A, B) and trying to execute sql statement with For update clause
Session A
select * from emp where empid in (10) for update nowait;
Session B
select * from emp where empid in (10, 20) for update nowait;
my question is after executing select statement in sessin B will oracle locks
empid =20 or it will ignore the lock as part of it (empid=10) is already locked by
session A.
Can anyone plz help me in this..
Rds,
NagaWhy not try it out?:
Session A:
SQL> select empno,ename from emp where empno in (7788) for update nowait;

Whether two session with for update at the same time will wait for another?
Will this scenario happen?
One session executes: select ... for update/select ... for update nowait
The other session also executes: select ... for update/select ... for update nowait
Two sessions happens at the same time unluckily. Whether they will all stand by because of "for update" or quit immediately because of "nowait"?
Thx a lot.HiddenName wrote:
This situation is called 'a deadlock'. Oracle will automaticaly detect a deadlock. One of the statements will fail with ORA-00060 deadlock detected;
No, it's not.
A deadlock is when sesson-A has a lock on something that session-B needs in order to continue, and at the same time, session-B has a lock on something that Session-A needs in order to continue. They BOTH have something the other needs.
In the OP's case, at least as he described it, it is simple serialization. The one with the lower scn will go, then the next.
PS.
Why don't you try? You can setup a small table with some records, open 2 sessions to the same database and for example issue UPDATE statements:
session 1: update where id=1
session 2: update where id=2
session 1: update where id=2 - this will hang waiting for session 2 to commit and free lock
session 2: update where id=1 - ORA-00060
You may also read about deadlocks in chapter on "Data Concurency and Consistency" of "Oracle Concepts'. -
How to alter the materialized view defintion with -- For update clause
My db version is 9.2.0.3
My orginal materialized view difination does not have "for update " clause.
how can i alter the mview defination to inclused and exclude the "for update" clause.
I dont want to drop and recreate the mview with for update clause. But I what to change the existing definition.
Please suggest.
Thanks
Naveen.I already have the view definition in place. I want to change the exising defination, by adding the "for update " clause. Is it possible with any " alter mview ... " syntax.
Below is my existing syntax. I don't what to drop and recreate. Just want to alter the existing definition , with for update clause.
create materialized view test

tablespace DATA storage (pctincrease 0)
build immediate refresh start with sysdate next (trunc(sysdate+1) +1/24)
with primary key
disable query rewrite
as select * from test@isource;

I just bought a MBP w/Lion (10.7.4) and ran software update. The first two items I updated were firmware for SMC (ver 1.5) and EFI (ver 2.7) and now my MBP says: "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem." However, I can connect to the Internet to surf the web just fine. This is the only update I've made. Can firmware be uninstalled? If I reverted to the image on my external drive that I did with CCC prior to the update, would that fix it?
Hi! i hope i'm able to explain what i worked out and what worked for me. I had the same message coming up "no internet connection, run network/internet diagnosis" etc etc. Internet connection was fine. What i finally did:
Open airport, check internet, internet options ; with me, IPv6 was set as this (the letters are in german order and not in a english order, sorry...):
In system prefs, network/TCP/IP IPv6 was set to "automatic":
I did change the settings in Airport back to "Link Local" and Software Update worked immediately normal whithout restarting the computer.
No idea what changed the settings; however i did run permission repairs beforehand with no connection to any problems, just as a normal kind of 'maintenance routine'.
Hope this helps others, it worked for me.
Cheers

Software Update can't check for updates (Lion)
Just downloaded and installed OSX 10.7. Tried to run Software Update and get the following alert:
'Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem. The file “index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog” couldn’t be found on the server “swscan.apple.com”.'
Repaired permissions, created new user account... Issue persists. I'm connected to the internet. Software Update System Preference has no entries in the "Software Installed' tab.No I haven't tried to get the individually. I will just wait because I am not the only one in our household who's iTunes won't download app updates.
The Software Update error has also now changed to:
Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
A network error has occurred. Check your Internet connection, and then try again.
as opposed to earlier when it read:
Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
The file “index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog” couldn’t be found on the server “matsus2.matilda.net.au”.
So something has changed in the last few hours. Maybe it's not my computer and just something to do with the apple servers. The matsus2.matilda.net.au is the interesting thing as it has no relevance to our internet or home network. -

I need your support please if somebody encounter that to let me run my windows Update for more information its colored with red.
Ali HadaweHi ,
First of all ,I would you suggest to check the status of the "Windows update "services " and "Background Intelligent Transfer service".Run "Services.msc" to open the services manager.
Someone has tried the following methods to resolve the similar issue,please have a try :
1.go into Windows Update and change the settings to "Never check for updates (not recommended)", click OK, and then change it back to "Install updates automatically".
2.Turn on the Windows Defender and update it .
Here is a link for reference :

Some computers download and install the two approved updates, others only download Windows Update Agent and not the approved updates.

Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
The software update app fails with following error msgs. But all network functions fine.
+A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.+
+Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.+
Deleted the software update plist files in $HOME/Library/Preferences, $HOME/Library/Preferences/ByHost, and HD/Library/Preferences, as per some posts. no effect. Problem persists.
Any Ideas?
ThanksSame here
The last update I managed to do without problems was +Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5+ - since yesterday the update process has become much, much slower and when I try to install +Security Update 2009 005+ and +iTunes 9+, it fails, usually with the aforementioned error, but also sometimes with Error 400 or Error 600, IIRC. -
"Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem" - help!
Recently, when I perform a software update check on the pulldown Apple menu, I get this error:
"Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem."
The only problem is that my network works just fine. I use the internet and get emails without any problem. But I can't figure how I can fix Software Update.
The only relevant updates have been for Glims and 1Password. Oh, and note the same problem trying to access the App Store; I just get a "Can't connect to the App Store" error.
Any hints?I have to solve all my own problems.
The problem was due to Little Snitch. Once I upgraded from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2, my system works swimmingly again.

(solved)-Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer
