Updating router

I have a linksys 802.11b router that doesnt seem to reach all parts of my house equally.  I have an macbook pro, ipad and hp wireless router.  When i test my broadband speed it says i am only getting 4 mbps download and 480 kbps upload.  The max our plan has for wireles is 7 mbps download and 512 kbps upload.  Will updating/upgrading my router help with better coverage of the house and improve the download capabilities?  We are thinking of upgrading interent services as well, so I need to know if it is a router issue or a interent issue.
thanks

First, you will never get your quoted speed, although under ideal conditions you may get close.  Your older router can handle about 7Mbs with no problem, although if you upgrade you'll definitely need to upgrade to an 802.11n router. 802.11g can only handle about 8Mbps max (the 11Mbs is not a real world figure, but a mathematically derived max).
If you are intending on upgrading to a faster service, I would not bother with the old router.  I would buy a new 802.11n router.
Wrong.
1)  Most service providers have low enough caps that you'll see 95% of your quoted speed except at peak times of day.  I see 15 megabits/second from my Time Warner service all the time, and back when I had a 5 megabit cap, I NEVER failed to hit it.
2)  802.11g is good for far more than 8.
General rule of thumb - in good signal quality you'll almost never see more than about half the maximum rated bandwidth, and will usually see a bit less than half.  The advertised rate is the raw signaling rate of the interface - when you take into account wireless handshaking and overhead, you usually drop to about half the raw signaling rate since wireless isn't full duplex.  In an area with little interference and only one active device, I've never had problems hitting 20-25 Mbps on an 802.11g router.  Interference and multiple simultaneous active devices will drop this quickly though.
This is consistent with your experience, since you're seeing a bit less (4 megabits) than half the signaling rate (5.5 mbps = 11 divided by 2)
Also, if you're in an interference-prone area, 802.11n in the 2.4 GHz band performs very poorly - for 802.11n to shine it really needs to be running in the 5 GHz band.  My experience has been that up to 10-15 feet, my 5 GHz N router outperforms my old 2.4 GHz G router.  Beyond that - the G router blows it away, although that's partly because I have a high-power G router with an external high-gain antenna.  It's VERY difficult to find N routers with external antenna provisions.
For your purposes, a good solid 802.11g router with a good antenna (MAKE SURE it has an external antenna - if you can't see an antenna sticking out of it, don't buy it) will be your best bet.  Even the stock antenna of an external-antenna G router will be better than any internal-antenna router.
Also, for determining what your external connection is truly capable of - use a wired connection to test it.  Take the wireless out of the equation.

    Cannot get the Apple.. what?
Model and actual device you are talking about?
Apple covers a pretty huge range.. If you mean extreme.. did you reset it to factory and start over.. that is always necessary when you change a network. You cannot pick up a router from one home and network and plonk it into another and have it work.. aint gonna happen.
You also need to power down any pure cable modem for 20min or so to get it to forget the old MAC address that captured the IP so the Apple ??? has a chance to work.

  • VPN connection created with CMAK fails to update routing table on Windows 8.1 with error 8000ffff

When my clients connect their CMAK-created VPN, it fails to run the script to set their routing table with the following error:
Custom script (to update your routing table) failed (8000ffff)
My objective is to create a VPN connection with split tunneling - does not use the VPN connection as the client's default gateway.
All my clients are on Windows 8.1 64-bit, and are logged in with Administrative privileges
My VPN Clients are on 10.242.2.0/24, my internal network is on 10.172.16.0/24
I want only traffic for 10.172.16.0 to go via the VPN. Everything else should go via the client's internet connection
My Connection Manager Administration Kit profile, was created on Windows 2012 R2 CMAK with the following settings:

    REMOVE_GATEWAY

"By default, the dial-up entry and the VPN entry have Make this connection the default gateway selected.
Leave this default in place, and remove any gateways by using the REMOVE_GATEWAY command in the routing table update file itself."
    It seems counter-intuitive to leave
Make this connection the default gateway selected, when I specifically don't want that behaviour, but leaving it selected and using REMOVE_GATEWAY works for me.

  • 10.4.9 update / router & safari problem

Following the update, which went smoothly my internet connection slowed to dial up speed from 3MB. When I bypass the router speed to back to 3MB. But safari shows no images only text / Firefox works fine. I've reset the router updated the firmware, powered modem, router, computer off and cycled on in recommended sequence with no change. Update 10.4.9 appears to have conflicted with the router D-Link DI-604. I checked D-Link's site and found no info (put in a help request). Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? Has anyone had a similar problem post update?
iMac (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Turn OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that makes a difference -- if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.

For example if 3 materials belong to origin group A then if all 3 materials use labour hours of 5 hours, then the user has to enter only the origin group and 5 hours once to update all 3 material routings. Is this possible?

    Dear Raja,

if you mean updating the results in Material master

  • Updating router firmware - a concern

I wandered into the Linksys site and noticed that one could automatically update the firmware on one's router using Linksysupgrade.exe (I have a WRT54GS router).Since my router is a few years old, I figured what the heck. It said it would check to see if it needed upgrading and if so, would do so automatically. So I downloaded the file and clicked on it and didn't see much happen except it extracting some files into my Windows\system32 directory called DDMI2.sys and DDMI.vxd (I only knew that because Online Armor (my firewall) popped up and asked me to allow that.) So I did.
I'm connected to the Internet from a desktop using a linksys wireless-G usb network adapter with Speedbooster. The only other computer in the house is laptop which connects through it's built in wireless card. I don't have either computer hooked up via Ethernet.
I just wondered what this linksysupgrade.exe actually did? Is it going to do something weird when I reboot? I don't want to toast my router. It made it sound so simple that I figured , well what the heck. Then when I didn't see it do anything, I thought I'd read the forums and then saw a lot of comments about making sure one of the computers was hooked up via an Ethernet cable if you were going to upgrade. So now I'm a bit nervous about what is going to happen when I reboot. Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!
    Mark

Did you get any messages like "Upgrade is Successful" or "upgrade failed" if not dont worry. if you wanty to upgrade the firmware try the manual way. Download the firmware from www.linksys.com/downloads and follow these steps: Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: - Open
an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on
the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' to select the
extracted/uncompressed .img or .bin file and click on "Upgrade"-Wait for few seconds ....
It shows that "Upgrade successful"  After
the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back
to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Reset the router for few seconds ....
    Reconfigure it ....

  • Updating router firmware

I have been having issues with my iPad staying connected to the Internet. Often it will show that I am connected and I will have 2-3 "bars" in my signal, but I get an error saying I can't connect to the Internet.
I spoke with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and they told me I need to update my router firmware. My router is a DLink (I believe) and I do not use a Mac, and he said that often the routers need to be updated to work with iPads. (I have the same problem with my iTouch).
I am not sure how to update the firmware. I want to ensure I don't screw anything up as I use my computer to remote into my office as well.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!!!

Just a question, is the wireless connection dropping, or just the internet? If the signal is dropping (and there are no other wireless computers or if there are, are doing the same thing), cordless phones have been known to contribute to problems. (http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/2191241/Interference-from-Cordl ess-Phones.htm) If its just the iPad, and there are other wireless computers working find, its the renew lease thats screwing with it, in which case you would update the firmware (or can manually go into the router and force renew lease on it).

  • WRT54GL Web Interface Broken - Failed Firmware Update - Router Works

I have a WRT54GL v1.1 router. I tried to update the firmware, using what I thought was the newer firmware, apparently somewhere I mislicked and didn't get what I thought I was getting. It succeeded, but now the web admin interface is totally broken. It loads, but there are no link or text, I can seem some form fields with some data, but mostly it's like seeing the page with NO content or navigation (though I can see the layout correctly). This means I can't change any of the router settings.
My internet still works. Wireless works (I just have no way to secure it now). I have tried to usu TFTP to upload the correct drivers from this web site. It says "Cannot Connect to Server" or something like that when it tries. I have pinged the router and it works. I have tried to assign a static IP (192.168.1.100) and then have TFTP start as soon as I see my continuos ping start to get a result. It still says the same "Cannot Connect" type of message.
I have also tried to see if the router has some kind of "Management Mode" by holding the rest button, unplugging the router, plugging it back in, waiting 10 seconds and releasing then waiting a minute and going to 192.168.1.1 and it looks like the same exact broken web interface I normally get. It doesn't appear to go to a "Management Mode."
The power light is not blinking.
    Help!
    Screenshot of Broken Interface

What was the procedure you followed to upgrade/re-flash the firmware through TFTP?
As TFTP firmware upgrade was failed follow the below mentioned steps.
Double click the TFTP.exe file and click run.
For Server- Enter the IP Address of the router that you assigned.  By default, the router is 192.168.1.1...
For Password- Enter the password you assigned the router. By default, the router’s password is “admin”.
For File- Click the triple “…” button and browse for the .bin firmware file...
Click Upgrade button to start upgrading.  A progress bar should show up to show the progress.
Once the Upgrade is done press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • 2.0 Firmware update: router & car connection successes,  failures & warning

    1. I found out that my Touch doesn't see the network on my Airport extreme 802.11n operating on 5GHz in a mixed Airport Extreme network. It does, however, see & connect to an attached Airport extreme 802.11g operating on 2.4GHz (with WPA2). Conclusion: Maybe the Touch can't connect to routers operating on 5GHz. Has anyone had any success with routers operating on 5GHz?
    2. After installing the firmware update, my Touch stopped working with my car's Alpine iPod radio that I had been using for over a year with the Touch without any problems. It detected the iPod, but kept on "searching" without any success. I'll try another iPod tomorrow, but I'm sure the radio is OK. That's a problem as I doubt that the radio manufacturers will come up with software updates to accommodate Apple's iPod firmware updates. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem?
