"Upgrade DVD" limitations?

Kind users,
I need some help exploring the possible limitations of the Snow Leopard disc that Apple sends users through the Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program. AFAIK, this disc is marked "Upgrade DVD," which distinguishes it from the retail disc, which is marked "Install DVD."
Specifically, I would like to know if it will install Snow Leopard on a freshly erased internal drive when no other drive containing a version of OS X is mounted on the Mac, or if it is necessary to install Leopard before installing Snow Leopard (which complies with the licensing requirement of the program).
The disc apparently will install Snow Leopard on an erased external disc if the internal one has either Leopard or Snow Leopard on it, & it may work the other way as well, with one of those two OS versions on a mounted external drive allowing Snow Leopard to be installed on an erased internal one. I'm trying to verify the behavior when just the internal drive is present & erased, with no OS version on it.
I would try this myself but I only have the retail "Install DVD" & "CPU Drop-in DVD" Snow Leopard discs, so I can't. If you have the DVD marked "Upgrade DVD" & have ever tried using it to do a "clean" install on the internal drive with no other drive attached, I would appreciate learning if you were successful or had to do a "two step" install (first installing Leopard from your system discs & then Snow Leopard from the upgrade disc).

Thank you for the link. I am still hoping for someone who has done this to post here, verifying that no other disk that had Leopard or Snow Leopard installed on it was mounted on the Mac when they did the clean install. I have yet to see any source explicitly mentioning anything about this.
It seems possible this might make a difference, since I know from looking at the installer logs for my upgrades that the installer logs attached disks & any OS versions on them.
BTW, for those wondering why I'm asking about this, there are 3 reasons:
1. Idle curiosity: If the "Upgrade DVD" discs are 100% functionally identical to the "Install DVD" discs, why did Apple go to the trouble of making two discs?
2. Helping a friend determine if something is wrong with his Mac and/or if he should buy the $29 retail disc.
3. Deciding if general advice about installing/reinstalling Snow Leopard or related issues should be different depending on which disc a user has.

I only have PP upgrade DVDs from Cs3 to Cs6, I need to reinstall in new machine, how do I do this without a cs6 disk

I Have been using PP since 1.5 I am now on CS6 but the last 3 updates have been on upgrade DVDs. I now need to delete and reinstall Premier. How can I do this without a CS6 disk. I cannot reinstall CS3 and then do the upgrades individually as CS3 was for Win XP and I'm not sure it would work. Is there a dept in Adobe I can contact (no telephone numbers) to get a CS6 DVD. Thank you for any assistance.

Adobe has made this process much simpler in recent years.
No need to re-install any version earlier than the current version (CS6). All installers (upgrade or full) contain the full program code. The difference between full and upgrade is in the serial number.
All you need do is download (link below) and install CS6, enter the CS6 upgrade serial number then enter the CS5 serial number (even if that too is an upgrade).

How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

Cannot upgrade from Mac OS X (10.4.11) with Mac OS X leopard upgrade DVD

I tried to install the Leopard today and I was unsuccessful. I was kept from proceeding to the initial install with a box that said Mac OS X cannot be upgraded to V 10.5 on your computer- Mac OS X v 10.4 or later cannot be found on your computer. At this point I can proceed and I had to quit. I brought my Macbook Pro last October just as the Leopard was being released. I purchased for a very small sum the Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD but i used it today and no success. If anyone can assist me in this matter I would appreciate it. I am up to date with firmware and all other soft ware updates etc. I have also have v 10.5.1,2,3 in a folder ready to be added once I can install the my Leopard DVD

I posted a few weeks ago stating that I was unable to upgrade.
I ran Utilities and tried again to no avail.
I called Apple and they told me to backup everything and do a fresh install. Before doing that, I decided to see if the Leopard Upgrade DVD could see my backup because I created it so that it would be a bootable hard disk.
It did recognize my external disk, so I clicked on the Utilities application to see if it could see my hard disk and it couldn't. When I got back to the window that allowed me to select a hard disk, suddenly my internal hard disk appeared.
It worked, and now I'm using Leopard. I don't know if it's a workaround, but it was a lot better than deleting everything off of my computer, installing the new system, and copying it all back onto my internal hard disk.
I hope someone else will find out that this works for them...

Leopard Upgrade DVD unusable - Not readable

Hello everybody,
I can't install Leopard on my brand new Macbook Pro.
I bought this upgrade DVD on Apple.com for $10. I purchased my Macbook Pro on October.
Each time I insert the DVD in the laptop, the computer tries to read it, but fails. No icon appear on the desktop. After a minute or so, the DVD is automatically ejected.
Can Apple send me another Leopard Upgrade DVD ? Or exchange it ?

Problems have been reported with some installation DVDs. Is it safe to assume that you can read other DVDs?

"Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer" used upgrade DVD up-to-date

I'm using an OS X 10.5 Leopard "Upgrade DVD" I bought with the up-to-date program when I bought a 2007 Macbook Pro (3,1) with Tiger bundled.
I tried to use it on my PowerBook G4 500 MHz (PowerBook 3,2), but it gave me the message:
"Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer"
My upgrade DVD looks like the retail version (aside from the "upgrade DVD" text), and it doesn't have any text explicitly suggesting that it's a restore DVD for any specific model. Can I still assume this is effectively a retail DVD?

Came with 2007 Macbook Pro (3,1) implies that it can't be use with PowerBook G4 500 MHz (PowerBook 3,2). That violates the terms of use. Additionally, it's machine-specific, as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2681 If you want to put Leopard on the PB, buy the retail version.

Is it legal to buy a Leopard-Upgrade DVD?

I've seen lots of upgrade-dvds from Tiger to Leopard on ebay, but do not know if it's legal to buy those. Does anybody know this?

Welcome to the Apple forums:
I personally would not buy a Leopard DVD from eBay (read another post about someone who bought one that was scratched and thereby useless) but if it's not a full install DVD it probably will not work.
It might also be a scam: Someone selling the Tiger-to-Leopard DVDs that came out last last year, or possibly an "Up-to-date" upgrade disk.
I would also be very suspicious that they are not copies. Do they come with a real License?
And why would someone be selling it? They are certainly cheap enough from a legit dealer like Amazon. Saving a few dollars may actually result in losing a lot of dollars if your disk is defective.
Upgrade CDs are only for the hardware of the machine that they came with. They will most likely not work on another machine.
I am not sure it is legal unless you know how and why this disk is being sold. Was the other machine decommissioned?
Buy from a legit Apple outlet and be sure and know you have a product with a full warrantee.

OS X Upgrade DVD not recognized

I just put XP on my old MacBook. Everything went OK, except when I put in my 10.5 DVD it doesn't get recognized by Windows! Is this possibly because it's an "Upgrade" DVD? The original system software DVD that came with the MacBook is 10.4.6., and XP doesn't recognize that, either. So I don't have any way to install the necessary drivers....

Do you have your old hard drive with Lion and does it still function properly so that if you were to reinstall it in you MBP you would be back to square one?
If so I suggest this: Put back your old hard drive and open DISK UTILITY app (in the utilities folder).
Erase the new hard drive and format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Go to "restore" and from the left side bar drag the old hard drive to the SOURCE window and the new hard drive to the DESTINATION window. Click the restore button and go to lunch. The more data you have the longer it will take (could be 2-3 hours). Use a firewire if you have it or an esata wire even is even faster. These will speed up the data transferr.
After this has been completed, swap the drives and you should be in business. My experience has been that the first boot takes longer than what you are used to.
CAVEAT: I have done this several times with no problems, but never with Lion. If you try this and fail I suspect there is some aspect with LIon that prohibits the transferr but I'll be bold and wager this will not be the case.

Can you please tell us which other models are listed on the upgrade DVD? As far as I know if you use the upgrade DVD you have to search for your model number, e. g. PSAL6E. Dont search for A350-123 for example, you will not find it! ;)
However, maybe you can add this information.

Pavillion a1600n Windows Vista Upgrade DVD

I have the HP Pavilion PC / Compaq Presario PC HP Upgrade Assistant disk but I lost the Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade DVD. And when I put the HP Pavilion PC / Compaq Presario PC HP Upgrade Assistant disk, it says "This is not a valid HP System." and "This version of Windows is NOT supported.". Can you guys help why the messages appear and can someone help me find a copy of the Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade DVD? Your help will be greatly appreciated!

That file will extract, but fail with some error about "no media." Passable instructions on how to install the driver from the device manager are here (and the below link includes the above link):

After you install it, you will have the newest device drivers. And your internal microphone will still not work.
I won't even close with "hope this helps." I know it won't. I post this so you won't scour the web looking for updated drivers. These are the updated drivers.

Full System Restore with Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD

I'm trying to do a full system restore to go from OS 10.6.4 back to 10.6.3, can I do the full restore with the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, or do I need the original Installation DVD that came with my computer?

Reinstalling using the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD?

This may be a stupid question, but I need to reinstall my Mac, however I only have the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD that was shipped to me since I the leopard dvd is stuffed somewhere in the back cupboard that I can't find for love nor money.
Can I erase the hard drive and perform a clean installation from the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? I've a feeling that I can't but just wanted to confirm.

Upgrade DVD Cannot Be Used As A Start Up Disc To Repair Drive

I tried to use the Upgrade DVD disc to repair the hard drive but a warning came up when restarting indicating that I could not upgrade because it could not find Tiger on my system. (Tiger is missing because Leopard is installed) I went to the menu to find disc utility and launched it. My external drive and the upgrade disc were the only discs showing. I then thought that I had to use my Tiger disc to repair the drive so I went to the Start Up disc file to restart from my hard drive as opposed to the upgrade disc but my hard drive was no longer showing. I restarted the computer holding down the eject button to eject the disc. The disc ejected but a blue folder showing a question mark showed up. (Shades of OS9). I hit the power button and restarted and the computer restarted ok. My hard drive did not need repairing, I was just trying to see if I could repair permissions and repair the disc with the Upgrade disc. Apparently this is a problem. Is anyone else experiencing this and If I do need to ever repair the drive, can I use my Tiger disc?

Oxford is the manufacturer of one of the chips used in firewire to IDE bridge boards as are found in external FW cases; specifically, the Oxford 911 chip. It isn't the only one out there, but it is regarded as the best in terms of speed and compatibility with Macs. Some macs refuse to boot from FW drives with other chips in the bridge board; others apparently aren't as picky. My eMac will boot from a non-Oxford chipset drive.
Since the Oxford 911 is better than the others, it is a selling point and is usually specified by vendors as being present if it is. If you want to know what you have in your box, you can look at the bridge board and see the chip maker's name stenciled on the chip. If it doesn't say Oxford, it isn't an Oxford.

Open Firmware Password; not on Snowy Upgrade DVD; how do I get hold of it?

my MBP15 came with 10.5 & i got the snowy upgrade dvd from apple; there's no Open Firmware Password utility on the upgrade DVD (i even searched using pacifist) and it cannot be downloaded from apple's downloads. this seems a serious omission since i protect my mac (somewhat) with it.
does anyone know how i can get it, since i think it's pretty product specific; if it's actually different from the version on the original 10.5 disk that shipped with the machine or would some kind soul with the same machine (MacBookPro5,1 MBP51.007E.B05) have to share it with me?

what had me fooled is that pacifist didn't find it, and it used to be a discrete file which you could simply drag from the utilities folder of the install disk on to your mac.
i have now enabled the firmware password!
