Upgraded LR1 - LR3 Catalog: blank Grid, non functioning app

I've been dealing with support on this, but they're utterly useless, taking days to get back to me and spinning me over troubleshooting 101 stuff.
Problem:
Upgraded a perfectly working LR1 catalog to LR3.  No issues during upgrade.
Upon trying to use the LR3, the first thousand or so of my photos show up in Grid, but everything after that is blank. By that I mean, a grid cell is drawn, but LR3 doesn't display a thumbnail, or any cell extras or metadata.
Clicking on one of these empty cells gives me a thumbnail frame and some metadata (slowwwwly).
Going to Loupe View on a non-empty cell gives me a "Loading..." spinner and an unrendered thumbnail preview (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Going to Loupe View on an empty cell just gives me a blank screen (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Develop module does load the picture, but slowly.
When I quit, the app freezes up completely, with beachball.  Must force-quit (after giving it 20 minutes in case it was actually trying to do something)
Initially, when I load LR3, my CPU runs high, 75%, like it's working on something.  Then it just cuts out as if it's given up.
Console output when this happens is the following:
6/17/10 7:27:38 PM Adobe Lightroom 3[518] ServerProcess [AsyncDataServer( Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat )] ERRORSERVER<AsyncDataServer( Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat )>: A command threw an exception.
6/17/10 7:27:38 PM Adobe Lightroom 3[518] ServerProcess [AsyncDataServer( Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat )] ERROR Error: ?:0: attempt to perform arithmetic on field '?' (a nil value)
6/17/10 7:27:38 PM Adobe Lightroom 3[518] Error initializing alternate universe. bad argument #1 to 'pairs' (table expected, got nil)
System:
MacBook Pro Core2Duo 2.1Ghz 3GB RAM, 500GB Drive.
Initially Mac OS 10.5.8, but I tried upgrading to 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 (no luck).
Library: 21,000 photos
Other things I've tried:
Trashing all LR3 prefs, caches (running YASU), LR preview caches, plists, extensions, reinstalling, restarting -- no luck
Noticed it was copying the LR1 prefs plist, so I archived that.  LR3 generated a new pref, but no help
Downloaded LR2 Demo, upgraded LR1 Catalog to LR2 Catalog (which works perfectly, no issues), and then LR2 Cat -> LR3 -- no luck
Checking integrity of Catalog in LR1 and LR2 (no problems) and LR3 when upgrading (no problems)
LR3 runs fine on an empty catalog and if I point it at my photo folder and import everything, it's ok (with none of my 3 years of modifications of course).
Is my only option to write out LR1 data to sidecar files and then setup a new Catalog in LR3?

Well, on top of having full access to the photo files, LR obviously has proper permissions to affect the files it generates in the AppSupport>Adobe>Lightroom folder, the Caches>Lightroom folder, the Pictures>Lightroom folder and the Preferences> folder, otherwise it wouldn't be able to build a new catalog, new prefs, new caches and so forth when I generate a new empty catalog.
I really doubt this is a permissions voodoo issue or a monitor profile issue.
LR3 works fine with a brand new catalog (and all the same Photo files).
LR1 and LR2 have absolutely no problem with my catalog and photo files.
LR2 upgrades my LR1 Catalog without issue.
LR3 fails with my upgraded catalog (and all the same photo files)
Unless I'm missing something in my logic tree here, it seems to me this is obviously a problem with LR3 upgrading my Catalog.
Other people's catalogs upgrade fine, and that's dandy, but my catalog doesn't upgrade AND it fails with exactly the same error message every time in the Console (See original post), which seem to be related to some internal db issue, dividing by zero, nil values.
Something ain't being handled right by LR3 that previous versions of LR had no problem with.

  • 10.6.8 update added a non functioning app...

It seems the 10.6.8 update added Photo Booth to my applications folder. The icon has the "No" symbol on top of it, and clicking on it brings up the message: "You cant open the application Photo Booth because it may be damaged or incomplete." It seems to have installed a bunch of project folders, and HTML files, but no application that I can find anywhere. I have never added this app on my machine, and it is not part of the original installation. Info shows it modified the exact time I updated to 10.6.8. Time machine shows no record of it prior to that time. Anybody else have this? I updated using the Software Update method, my previous version was 10.6.7.

Actually, Photo Booth has been a standard OS X application since Leopard, at least. The reason for what you see is that you must have deleted Photo Booth. The solution is to reinstall Photo Booth from your original Snow Leopard DVD, then reinstall the 10.6.8 update by downloading the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo and reinstalling.

How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........

Stop Leave original alone Update ..... Default selection Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • How To Get Refund Non-functioning App

The I Swipe Ruler is not accurate and does not repeat at all (that is everything a measuring device needs to do). Below is the response from the developer, but I don't know who to contact at Apple to get a refund to my account. It is only $0.99 but at this point it is the principle of the matter more than the money.
There is a junk app out there sold by Apple that costs a buck but no way to get a refund that I know of. I tried the apple phone number who sent me to the itunes store where I got the apple phone number in the first place. When I go to itunes, click on all  of the support links all I get are circular links bringing me back to where I started. Can someone tell me how to get my $0.99 returned please?
    E-mail from developer...
    Hi, sorry to hear that.
Instructions are in the app itself, I'm planning to upload a video demo for that when I'll have time.
You are right that the app have a small inaccuracy, if you want more accurate one you can use my app I-ruler its free!
Mostly it depends on your iDevice (on new iPhone it works best).
If you really don't like this app please contact apple and say you download that app accidentally and you contact me for approval of a full refund.
Again I'm really sorry for your bad experience.
    Have a good week,
    Idan.

  • TS1702 Refund for non-functioning app - Jumsoft Money

I am using Jumsoft Money - i have bought the Mac version plus iphone app plus iPad app. A big investment.
The recent program update has rendered the apps useless - everybody is complaining but Jumsoft is being totally unresponsive: how can I get my money returned?

If you've contacted the developer and not a had a reply from them then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account (Store > View My Apple ID on iTunes 11) and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that app and use the 'Report a Problem' link and fill in details about the problem (iTunes support should reply within, I think, about 24 hours).
Some people have had a problem with the 'report a problem' link (it's been taking people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) - if it does that to you then try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, and then Purchases, Billing & Redemption.

  • Error message while importing upgraded LR3 catalog to new LR4 catalog

I'm using a Win7 x64 system, 3Ghz Xeon dual core, 8 GB ram system.  After upgrading a LR3 catalog to LR4, it would not display all images in GRID VIEW in the upper level folders.  i.e. D:/Photos/2011.  It will display the images in the 2011 folder but not in the Photos folder.  And yes I do have the "Show Photos in SubFolders" selected.
By importing this updated LR4 catalog to a new LR4 catalog the display problem disappears.  However, I get an error message at the end of the import saying that "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error."  This occurs after it says it is importing updated keywords.  But, as compared to the LR3 catalog, the new LR4 catalog shows the correct number of images in the catalog, shows the correct number of collections and seems to have all the keywords in the keyword list panel.
Because there seems to be some sort of catalog database upgrade error, I am hesitant to use LR4 for production at this time.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this error might be, or a work around for the error so I can be confident in my LR4 catalog?
    Thanks,
    Tony...

I've pgraded to LR4.1 RC1 and then created a new catalog, imported from my original LR3 cat. It updated that temporary cat and then imported to the new LR4 cat without issues or error messages. I then just did an upgrade to my original LR3 cat and saved it in another location. Upgrade went without hitch or error messages and I am now using that catalog.  So far, so good with the new candidate.
    Tony...

  • How to merge or upgrade the PSE8 catalog into the LR3 master catalog?

I did some searching but wasn't able to find a good match for the issue I'm trying to resolve.
I have recently installed LR3 after using LR3-beta, and had also been using PSE8 as my main photo library. After installing LR3 I used the "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog...." to create a LR3 catalog of all photos that were in PSE8 catalog. In doing so LR8 created a separate catalog (Lightroom Catalog-2.lrcat) for these photos. However, I would like all photos in one catalog in LR8 (preferably in the LR8 master catalog: Lightroom Catalog.lrcat). Is there a way to either merge those 2 catalogs, or is there a better way to add the PSE8 photos into the LR3 master catalog? Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
Tried that - while in LR using the master catalog, I selected the other catalog (Lightroom 3 Catalog-2.lrcat) and received the following pop-up box:

  • Very slow library function after upgrading to lr3.4

I "upgraded" to LR3.4 and since then the Library function absolutely crawls along.  I have a quad core desktop with gobs of memory.  it flew through library, import, and developing before.  Only change was downloading and installing what I thought was a minor update for raw file updates.  Ideas?

yeah 10.4.10 is not playing nice. I've searched thoughout the forum and even called apple support and there is no clear solution. Apple basically told me to go back to 10.4.9... good thing I spent the extra $$ on applecare..huh

  • DVD Drive Non-Function Mac Mini 3,1 (late 2009)

    Hi
The DVD drive in my Mac Mini has recently become non-functional, "About this Mac" sees the drive fine,

      Model:          OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
      Revision:          2AHI

      Detachable Drive:          No
      Power Off:          No

      Bay Name:          Upper
But when you insert a disc there is no response, it does not see to attempt to read it just ejects after about 20-30 seconds.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? This issue started sometime after I upgraded the memory, but I cannot be sure that the two things are connected as I very rarely use the DVD drive and the first time I tried to use it was several months later.
    Many Thanks

Optical drives are pretty short lived in my experience.
    Might try a cleaning Disc.

  • External Lacie drive crashed, now I can't find a recent backup for LR3 catalog.

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8.  My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac).  My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images.  The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting.  Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted.  I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over.  I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive.  10 hours to erase the drive (the drive never quit during this time).  Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either).  So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog.  The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012.  I am baffled.  What happened all those times I was backing up?  I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

What happened all those times I was backing up?
We can't possibly know what happend or where your backups are. But you can indeed search all of your available hard disks and see if there are any files named *.LRCAT with recent dates.
By the way, I would be extremely wary of using that Lacie drive any more. If it was me, I'd replace it.

  • System Preference Panes non-functional (some)

I am "fixing" a friends MacBook Pro as a favour, and she's getting exactly what she paid for. It may be a few years old - not sure. It's running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, but I'm putting it in this more general section because it may not be SL-specific.
A few of the System Preferences panes don't work. A message comes up which simply says "non-functional" or something like that. Specifically, the ones whcih don't work are:
    Desktop and ScreenSaver
    Spotlight
    Energy Saver
Background: she forgot her password, and this is on a computer which was formerly someone else's. I couldn't even get the thing to the login screen, so something else was wrong besides her password, but I had her gray Snow Leopard installation disks, so got through the re-install process, made a new User for myself, as Administrator, and was then delighted to find that all of her data was still intact. I had to add myself in to the permissions on her UserID. I made a new user for her as well, because we still didn't have her own original password, and I looked around but couldn't find it. I copied all of her data over to her new UserID.
I also did all Updates, plus tried a 10.6.8. combo update.
Then I made an error. The former owners UserID was also still there. We couldn't log on as her either, without her password, but I figured that we didn't need that anymore, checked with the current owner first, and deleted the original User (and renamed the computer). I cannot reconstruct in my mind whether the System Preferences panes malfunction occurred before or after deleting the original User.
There is other minor wonkiness, but basically the machine is running and the data has been preserved (and now backed up). But one thing at a time: I've reinstalled the OS a couple of times, without improvement. I tried to upgrade to Mavericks, but after downloading, it told me that this computer could not be upgraded (without saying why not).
I haven't found any plist files which look relevant. I did more 2 of them out of HD-Library-Preferences, without any effect, so put them back. I find the Preference Panes in System-Library-PreferencePanes, but didn't see anything to do about that. The offending panes look like they're at least present.
Is there something simple I'm missing? Can I get those panes back?
    Thank you.
    Charles

Macbook pros need to be at least 2009 for 13" and 2007 for 15" and 17" to run Mavericks.  see system requiements.
At this point, the easiest solution will be to make your backups current, then wipe the drive and do a clean install of the system. That means more work reinstalling the backed-up data (you only want to restore data and third-party apps, not any of the system components), but it makes sure you get a clean, working copy of the system.

  • Wired interface non-functional

So I have a most unusual problem with a mac mini server that is driving me banana's that I hope someone in the Apple community has run into, and found a decent solution..
The mac mini (2.3GHz quad core i7, late 2012) is running 10.9 and server 3.0.1.   I did an upgrade from 10.8 (and whatever the previous version server was)..
Since then the wired ethernet interface (en0) literally stopped working. (Links up, but no connectivity.. no ping, it does not even send an ARP)
    Data points about the problem.
    - It worked flawlessly up until the upgrade to 10.9.
    - wireless interface is still fine, static or dhcp.
    - The IP is statically configured via System preferences - Network.
    - ifconfig in terminal show NO IPADDRESS assigned to the interface.
    - if I reconfigure the interface to DHCP, it will not receive an IP and ends up with an APIPA address..
    - if I go into terminal and 'ifconfig en0 down' then 'ifconfig en0 <IP> up' the interface works again until restart.  It will also correctly display the IP in terminal.
    - If I reset, it goes back into this same state (network preferences shows proper config, ifconfig does not, and the interface is non functional)
    - If I then go to cli, and manually ifconfig down then up, all is good again..  Doing so from system prefs has no affect..
Here is where it gets really interesting, and why I am convinced this is a software issue..     I did a clean install of 10.9 and Server on an external USB disk, and things work exactly as expected if I boot from that Volume..  If I boot from the internal drive, Its in the broken state again..
This absolutelty tells me its some kind of software issue, and I am out of ideas short of wiping the internal drive, and reloading all the data from scratch..
Anyone else run into this?  If yes, were you able to fix it without wiping/reloading?

First, thank you for taking the time to respond and offering great ideas..
I'd delete the interface & recreate it.
In 'System Preferences > Network tab' select the ethernet, click the - button. Then add it again. Reboot & see if it has any effect.
    - Had no affect..  More accurately, it works the same as doing ifconfig down/up in cli, where the interface will work again until the next reboot.
See what appears in Console (Spotlight search for it) in the 'All messages" section when you remove connect the ethernet.
    - Log messages are below..  Interestingly, I do not get the failure messages that I have highlighted in red on another machine that is is also running 10.9, with server loaded.

Have you tried changing the port on the switch it is connected to?
    - Yes, for ease of testing I have it plugged directly into my MacBook Pro  (I also tried new cable first )
Does safe mode have any effect?
    - No, Same results.
Again, booting the machine from a clean install on a USB disk, does not show the issue..    I’ve got a lot of data on the machine, so I am doing anything I can to avoid wiping and reloading it all..  Ive added the output of etrecheck, in case its of any help.

  • Advice on upgrade, settings, merging catalog

Do I need to start all over in setting up LR4 from LR3. It's been so long since I set everything up in LR3...I don't remember how I did it all! (Preferences, metadata, etc) Is there a way to bring all of that over in the upgrade process? (The box is still sitting on the shelf.)
I now have LR3 catalog, LR4 catalog from the beta. How do I, at least, get the LR4-beta catalog into the new lr4? I also don't want to clutter up my computer with 3 versions of LR. Will LR4-beta disappear after 31 March? What happens if I don't get the LR4 (actual) going by then? (I'm leaving the country for 2 weeks in a couple of days and won't be home until the 30th.)
    Many questions. Haven't upgraded before....
    Thanks!

There should not be an issue with upgrading in place - you have already given me my caveat. <grin>
You will need to upgrade integration components for every VM after upgrading Hyper-V.  New ICs come with each release of the OS.  Should not need to upgrade the VM's OSes other than that.
PowerShell.  Can be used to change all VMs to not autostart and then change it back to autostart after everything is updated and you are happy.  Can also be used to shutdown all the VMs instead of manually clicking on each one.  I would definitely
make the change to not autostart - you are going to have more than one reboot in there, because you are also going to be applying patches.  Don't want all those VMs yo-yo-ing
If you are using System Center to manage/monitor any 2012 R2 servers (after upgrade), you will need to upgrade to SC 2012 R2 because 2012 SP1 does not work with Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • Filtering by 'Blank' and 'Non Blank'

Numbers looks better but the lack of this simple function is driving me crazy.
In Excell, I could quickly sort a column by 'blank' 'non-blank' or a whatever else is in the pulldown (like a name) - and then get a count of those cells with that criteria.
How do I quickly do this in Numbers?? I know I can set criteria but I then need to know what's in a cell ahead of time.
I use spreadsheets to track projects and need to be able to quickly sort the fields while on a call - using Numbers for this is not working.

In Numbers, you can quickly hide rows that are blank or non-blank and then do the sort.
Click in the column you want to sort. On the the toolbar is a button called "reorganize", click it. It has three parts. The first is sorting. The second is filters. The third has to do with categories. In the filter section, select a column and it will let you choose filters such as blank, not blank, contains, etc. The rows that don't meet your criteria will be hidden and you can sort the remaining rows as ascending or descending if you want.
A count of the items that meet your criteria is not available as far as I know.
The Pages 09 users manual provides more detail than what I've provided above. The section on sorting begins on page 63.
