Upgrading Cluster To Windows Server 2012 R2

My previous thread was closed so here is a new one.
I have a 4 Hyper-V host failover cluster (R720s) running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, which is connected to a SAN where the CSVs are stored. I have a 5th R720 server on which I have installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter from scratch. I have installed
the Hyper-V and Failover Cluster roles on it as well. It is can see the SAN.
Questions:
1. To setup the Hyper-V virtual switch on the 5th server, should I join it to the existing Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster and create the virtual switch then? Or should I create the virtual switch on the 5th server, with the same settings as the virtual
switch in the Hyper-V failover cluster, before adding it to the failover cluster?
2. Can I add the 5th server to the existing Hyper-V cluster, migrate virtual machines from Hyper-V host #1 to the 5th server, install Virtual Guest Services on the virtual machines which have been migrated to the 5th server, drain roles from Hyper-V host
#1 and perform an in-place upgrade on Hyper-V host #1, once the in-place upgrade is complete, fail the roles back to Hyper-V host #1.
Please advise.
Thanks,

Just and FYI, it is now called a witness disk.  Yes, it does provide a quorum function from time to time, but with the new dynamic quorum model it is not always used as a quorum.
There are multiple ways to move the VMs from 2012 to 2012 R2.  Here are three.  A little searching of TechNet and you will most likely find some others.
One of the new capabilities is to live migrate the VM from 2012 to 2012 R2.  This involves storage migration across the network, so if you have lots of VMs and not a lot of bandwidth, this can be painful.  But it is the only way to ensure no downtime
of a VM, so it could be used selectively.
If you can take some downtime on the VMs, you can use something like VeeamZip -
http://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html
Another method that requires some downtime is to use a step-by-step guide that Microsoft published for moving from 2008 R2 cluster to a 2012 cluster.  Even though you are going 2012 to 2012 R2, it works exactly the same.

    Hi TFMalik,
"To avoid CSV failovers, you may have to make additional changes to the computer after you install the hotfix. For example, you may be experiencing the issue described in the "Symptoms" section because of the lack of hardware support
for Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX). This causes delays when the operating system queries for hardware support during I/O requests.
In this situation, disable ODX by changing the FilterSupportedFeaturesMode value for the storage device that does not support ODX to

  • Cluster Quorum Disk failing inside Guest cluster VMs in Hyper-V Cluster using Virtual Disk Sharing Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I'm having a problem in a VM Guest cluster using Windows Server 2012 R2 and virtual disk sharing enabled.
It's a SQL 2012 cluster, which has around 10 vhdx disks shared this way. all the VHDX files are inside LUNs on a SAN. These LUNs are presented to all clustered members of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster, via Cluster Shared Volumes.
Yesterday happened a very strange problem, both the Quorum Disk and the DTC disks got the information completetly erased. The vhdx disks themselves where there, but the info inside was gone.
The SQL admin had to recreated both disks, but now we don't know if this issue was related to the virtualization platform or another event inside the cluster itself.
Right now I'm seen this errors on one of the VM Guest:

  • Windows Server 2012 Cluster Validation Failing On List All Potential Cluster Disks

I'm in the process of setting up a new cluster using Windows Server 2012 with a view to migrate from our existing 2008 R2 cluster.  I am having problems validating the storage and the wizard keeps failing on the List All Potential Cluster Disks
test (which causes all the other storage tests to be cancelled).
    I'm getting the following error:
Failed while verifying removal of any Persistent Reservation on physical disk 19ba99a4 at node RC-HYPERV-3.riddlesdown.local.
When I look in validation report, disk 19ba99a4 is the management LUN (Access LUN 31 as termed by the storage software).
Looking on my 2008 R2 cluster this doesn't appear in Disk Management.
Any ideas how I can get rid of it or the error that it is causing?

  • Post upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi, I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or if i lack some steps.
We have an existing server having Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 as OS, DC, and DNS. I had to upgrade it based on global standards so I upgraded it into Windows Server 2012 R2.
What I did was an online upgrade, insert the DVD installation disc and it asked for a adprep for forest and domain.
I did both forest and domain adprep and installation continued. After reboot, it showed up errors on my local server. Please see image below:
and when i clicked each roles under Manageability, it shows me
Is there something I need to do to fix these red marks?
    Regards,
    Jeff

These are the logs i've seen inside Custom Views>Server Roles>AD DS, DNS Server, and Administrative Events respectively.

  • Upgrade a Domain Controller running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Eval

    Hello,
because I couldn't wait for Server 2012 to show up on Dreamspark Premium I installed the Datacenter evaluation version after I found this blog
post telling me, I could simply enter my key when I get it to upgrade to the full version.
After entering the command I get notified that "Changing this Windows edition is not supported online for a domain controller.".
The TechNet article for upgrading evaluation versions states the following:
"If the server is a domain controller, see http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh472160.aspx for important steps to follow before proceeding."
and taking me to an article for installing/uninstalling ADDS without further comments.
Simply typing "slui 3" and entering my key states that I have to enter an eval key.
My question is: Is there a painless way to upgrade my 2012 DC without losing my AD config?
    Regards,
    Hans

    Hi,
Please refer to the following Microsoft TechNet article to confirm if the steps of converting to full retail version are correct.
Evaluation Versions and Upgrade Options for Windows Server 2012
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx
If the warning persists, it means Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller does not support such convert. If so, please install another Windows Server 2012 full retail version or
convert to full retail version and then promote it to an additional Domain Controller for this domain. After that, transfer FSMOs to this new Domain Controller and demote the original Domain Controller.

  • Can't upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Even though the "Windows Server Installation and Upgrade" TechNet article (DN627667) claims that I can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, it seems I can't. I get an error message saying "Windows 2008
R2 Enterprise cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows..." What might be causing this issue? Thanks for any input! :)

    Hi,
Firstly, for retail versions, Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter.
I assume you are running Windows Server 2008 R2 retail version, right?
In addition, it seems that in earlier version than Windows Server 2012,
once you install the server in Core or with GUI mode, you could not switch to the other. The only option was to rebuild the server from scratch.
Did you install Windows Server 2008 R2 in GUI? If yes, I recommend you to upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2 in GUI
mode to see if the issue persists. If it succeed and you want to run in server core, you can just remove the graphical shell and convert your Windows Server 2012 R2 to Server Core.
    Best regards,
    Susie
Thanks for replying Susie. The 2008 R2 software is the one provided by Microsoft for Action Pack subscribers, so I'm assuming it's not retail. That's another thing, I think I should be installing the GUI as my 2008 has a GUI, not just the server core. For some
reason I missed that and clicked on the server core only install!

  • Error in creating Failover Clutser - Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello,
I have created a single node Failover Cluster in Windows Server 2012 R2. When I am trying to add second node to this cluster, it gives the error: “Cluster
service on node Node1did not reach the running state. The error code is 0x5b4. For more information check the cluster log and the system event log from node Node1. This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
The server 'Node1.mydomain.com' could not be added to the cluster.

I have attached the screenshots of Event ID.
Firewalls are turned off on both servers (Node1 and Node2). I have successfully created single node clusters on both servers, but when I try to add second node, it
    gives error.
Before starting the creation of new cluster I don't forget to Destroy previous cluster and run "Clear-ClusterNode".
Every time they successfully pass the Validate Configuration Test, but give the error on creating failover cluster.
I'm using the service account which has full permissions on CNU and both nodes, plus it has permissions to create computer accounts in AD.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Hasan Bin Hasib

    Thank you fellows!
The issue just resolved when I moved the Node1 and Node2 on the same host, and the cluster was successfully created.
After the creation of cluster, as soon as I moved the Node2 to some other host, then the Failover Cluster Manager console started showing Node2 is Down. Error: Cluster node Node2 could not to join the cluster because it failed
to communicate over the network with any other node in the cluster. Verify the network connectivity and configuration of any network firewalls. Event ID: 1653
    IP Address of Node1: 172.16.1.186 ; IP Address of Node2: 172.16.1.187
And yes, the ‘Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter Performance Filter’ is already disabled on all virtual adapters. All firewalls are disabled, no antivirus installed. I’m using same type of NICs.
I don’t know where the blockage is, and I am badly stuck. Please help.
    Thank you.

  • Windows server 2012: migration from 2012 standard evaluation version to 2012R2

    Hello.
    Is it possible то migrate
FROM: windows server 2012 standard evaluation
    TO: windows server 2012R2 standard
And if it is possible then "how to"?
Activation product key for 2012 is NOT available.
Activation product key (MAK, "open licence") for 2012R2 is available.
The key for 2012R2 does not "open" 2012 evaluation version.
    Thanks.

Upgrade means moving from your existing operating system release to a more recent release, while staying on the same hardware. For example, if your server is running Windows Server 2012, you can upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2. You
can upgrade from an evaluation version of the operating system to a retail version, from an older retail version to a newer version, or, in some cases, from a volume-licensed edition of the operating system to an ordinary retail edition.

    Hi,
Here agree with the words of Bill, you cannot able to convert the license to server 2012 R2 without buying new copy of R2. You need to buy new copy of Server 2012 R2. As Bill already mentioned, if you want to downgrade then it’s possible with downgrade rights.
