Upgrading from 2012 Standard Evaluation (Domain Controller) to 2012 R2 Standard Full

Hello,
My company recently wanted to move from a Linux domain controller to a Windows system. We downloaded and installed Server 2012 Standard evaluation, set up a domain, and made sure things were working well. Now, we want to purchase the full copy, but we see
that 2012 R2 is now out.
We would like to purchase R2, but somehow do an in-place upgrade. From what I can tell, we have a few hurdles:
*No upgrade path from 2012 Evaluation to 2012 R2 Full
*Cannot upgrade evaluation with DC role to full
What would be the recommended course of action to take here? We do have an unused machine here that could serve as a secondary domain controller that currently has no OS installed, but we don't want to buy 2 server licenses at this time if we can help it.
Thanks,
B
Braden

As far as i know you can't upgrade an eval to a full install on 2012.
you could build a new server using server 2012 R2 depends on how you normally purchase software you might be able to install without likening initially as you get a grace period. Build a new DC in the existing domain and then demote the current DC, then
rebuild it using 2012 R2, licence it and then install it back as a DC and demote the other one you created.

Upgrade means
moving from your existing operating system release to a more recent release, while staying on the same hardware. For example, if your server is running Windows Server 2012, you can upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2. You can upgrade from an evaluation version
of the operating system to a retail version, from an older retail version to a newer version, or, in some cases, from a volume-licensed edition of the operating system to an ordinary retail edition.

Physical server has 128 GB of RAM but only 92 GB of free space on C: system partition, so I've limited physical memory to 32 GB in order to accomodate to upgrade requirements.
As I mentioned earlier, it has Hyper-V role and some virtual machines that are turned off.
    Please advise,

    Hi Andrei,
Based on your description, we need to make sure all VMs have been shutdown before doing the upgrade.

  • MAC UPGRADE FROM CS4 STANDARD TO CS5 STANDARD OR EXTENDED

    Hello,
I'm interested to find out how to MAC UPGRADE FROM CS4 STANDARD TO CS5 STANDARD OR EXTENDED. Its my intention to buy the upgrade not thru
download, but purchasing the dvd's needed eventually used if necessary.
    Thank you

No, forget it. Adobe only sells current versions. How would you even be able to buy a used upgrade that is tied to someone else's previous version? Makes no sense at all and is clearly a breach of the EULA - whoever may sell you this "upgrade" would have to include all his previous versions leading up to that point, making it a completely independent full license that has no relation whatsoever to your CS4. And you would still have to run the license transfer drill.

  • Inplace upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2 fails when nearly complete

    Greetings,
I've tried several times to upgrade a Server 2012 Standard running Hyper-V to R2 several times now with no success.
The setup will start fine. There are no "compatibility" issues found or reported and the setup then proceeds as expected.
It gets all the way through the phases and past the installing features, reboots, does all the hardware devices install and completes that, then does another reboot and gives me a BSOD (sorry, windows could not start sad face)
It will then reboot again and just keep doing that until I catch the boot menu and select the option to roll back to previous Windows. It then goes through the revert process and gives me a functioning machine again.
It's very much like this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/23d088d4-9ce0-4f12-a8c5-9bde3979e372/windows-server-2012-r2-upgrade-fails?forum=winserver8gen
I have checked and there are NO disk volumes at all without drive letters
I have tried setting all Hyper-V and other 3rd party app services to manual and disabled
I tried disabling VT support from the bios (this was an issue on a workstation upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1)
I've unplugged all external drives and the UPS connection (only mouse/keyboard attached)
This server is running a full GUI, and apart from the UPS and RAID disk controller there are no other apps or software installed.
I am doing the install from a copy of all the DVD ISO files placed on a directory on the C: and there is over 550GB free space
I first tried this several months ago and gave up. I just tried again today with a newer ISO of 2012R2 but still the same issue.

There is a minor BIOS update that I will probably apply to be sure, although the release notes only say it is for additional support for newer CPU's. All drivers are either updated with ones that are already R2 supported, or are devices that say to just
use the drivers that come OOB in 2012/R2. This is a "white box" that I've built myself, but it effectively uses the same "enterprise class" components and is fully 2012R2 compatible.
I was able to do a clean install of 2012R2 using a different drive that I connected up, so I know the system is capable of running R2, the issue seems to be somewhere in the upgrade process that messes it all up. I'd rather avoid having to do a fresh install
    at this time though.
Because the upgrade actually seems to get through all the steps of hardware detection etc I'm at a loss where the failure is. My first guess is that there is some "other" driver that the system has decided is more suitable for something (and is incompatible)
than the one I'm currently using.

  • Best file location for VS2013 Windows Form applications on a stand alone PC (Windows 7) upgrading from VS2008 Standard?

    Hi and Help,
I'm in the process of upgrading my VS2008.Standard Windows Forms apps to VS2013.Pro.  My concern is I've got the VS2008 apps scattered in folders all over my disc; this includes the VS2008 published apps.
All of the converted apps are being stored in one folder,
VB13_AppSource, in their own sub-folders.  (I don't know if it makes any difference here, but all of these apps, except one which is a Sudoku screen app, use SQL2005.Express.  After I've made all the conversions, I'll upgrade SQL
to the latest Express available down the road in several months.  Included will be an upgrade from my current SSMS to the latest SQL Server Management Studio. )
What I'd like from you are recommendations and document locations on how to store VS2013 apps on my C drive.  Please note that I'm using Net 4.5.1.  Some of my thoughts are:
    Source folder for all applications
    Folder for all published apps
    Folder for Class Library(s?)
    Folder for Active SQL Databases
    Folder for Test SQL Databases
    Thanks for your help,
    Terry 01

  • Upgrade from Design Standard to Production Premium

    Hello,
the company I am working at is thinking about an upgrade from the Design Standard CS 5.5 to the Production Premium CS6.
My question now is: When we upgrade is it still possible to use InDesign CS 5.5?? Or will the licence change completly to Production Premium that it wont be possible to active InDesign ot the Design Standard package??
    Thanks.

Thanks for your answer. That I can install CS5.5 und CS6 I was aware. The problem I saw was that the Production Premium doesn't include Indesign and that I will lose the the programm after the upgrade.

  • Upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2 with DirectAccess

I have read a few posts here and there about doing an in-place upgrade of 2012 to 2012 R2 with DirectAccess.  I'm wondering what people in the forum have to say about doing an in-place upgrade.  I realize that there are no new features but I would
like to make sure most of our servers are 2012 R2 instead of 2012 since it is much friendlier.
What I was hoping to do was just mount the 2012 R2 ISO and run setup.  I have done this with AD and it worked in my home lab but I have not tried DA hence me asking.
    Thank you,

  • Upgrade from 2012 SP1 to R2

    Hello,
We are planning to upgrade our SCCM 2012 SP1 VM to R2. We are a small environment with 200 clients and run everything on the same VM. Currently installed is
    - Windows Server 2012
    - SQL Server 2012 SP1
    - Windows Assesement and Deployment Kit 8.1-
    - SCCM 2012 SP1 Build 7804.1000 - no CU is installed
We would like to upgrade to R2 and also use the opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 and install the latest SP for SQL 2012 Server.
Is there a particular order we need to follow? First to upgrade the OS? Pay special attention of something?
We will make first a snapshot before performing the upgrade.
    Thanks,
    Edy
    Edy from Switzerland

Follow Gerry's guide and you'll be fine.
Here's my take on the upgrade if you want a second opinion
    http://sccmentor.wordpress.com/2014/04/22/sccm-2012-sp1-cu1-to-r2-cu1-in-place-upgrade/
Both guides are missing the most important part (that's why it might be dangerous to follow next-next-finish-guides): you should always test the upgrade of the database (on a copy; using /testdbupgrade) before installing a service pack or R release!
The official documentation does contain that step:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/464a3ce6-3bbf-45d8-aeaa-0040f64214c5#BKMK_UpgradeR2Checklist ("Test the database upgrade process on a copy of the most recent site database backup.")

  • Can I upgrade from the standard destiny pre-order to the ghost edition?

Hey is there anyway I can upgrade my regular Destiny pre-order to the Ghost Edition or will I have to canel my previous preorder to buy the Ghost Edition?

    Hello Treveyon,
Thanks for pre-ordering Destiny at Best Buy! With the recent announcement of the Ghost and Limited Editions of Destiny, it’s no surprise that you’d be inquiring about switching your pre-order. I’ve only recently started really digging into the details of Destiny and I can already tell that this game will likely live up to the hype, and then some!
Kandlestick makes a few pretty good points. First, you would need to cancel your existing pre-order for the standard edition of Destiny and create a new pre-order for the Ghost Edition. However, as Kandlestick also mentioned, you may want to check the availability of the Ghost edition prior to cancelling your current pre-order. To my knowledge, the Ghost version is likely no longer available due to it being very limited in quantity. Click here to see the different versions and their availability.
If you wish to cancel your current pre-order, the method of doing so is determined by how you originally pre-ordered the game. If you pre-ordered on BestBuy.com, log in to your account and pull up the order. You should be able to cancel the pre-order from within the current order details. If you pre-ordered in-store, simply return to the store with your receipt and visit the Customer Service desk.
Please let us know if you have any further questions!

  • Activating Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 180 Eval after Upgrade from Win2K8R2 Standard

I had a licensed instance of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.  It is an OEM License.

How can I activate the 180 day trial?

"Error: 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist", suggests this server is now configured as a KMSclient, and it is trying to contact a KMShost to perform activation. It is not being returned any SRV records from your DNS, when it queries for _vlmcs._tcp
If you do not have a KMShost server implemented, you need to input a suitable ServerEnterprise product key.
When you purchase your ServerEnterprise license, you will be given a product key to use for this.
For this task, you can use slmgr.vbs /ipk
For your trial, you could use the method slmgr.vbs /rearm
this will only succeed 3 times, I think.
