Upgrading hard drive- reinstall windows?

I'm going to buy a 320 gb drive and an enclosure, use Super Duper to clone Macintosh HD to the new drive before installing it, but I'm also running Windows XP through Boot Camp. Can I also clone that partition using Super Duper (I also want to increase the size of the Windows partition on the new drive to 100 GB from the current drive's 20 gb). Or if I can't do that and have to reinstall both Boot Camp and XP, how do I deauthorize my old XP partition? Or will I not have any problems registering since I'm just reinstalling it again on the same computer?

You probably need to boot from XP CD once, check the FAQ section above.

  • Upgrading hard drive and Windows

I have a X61s Thinkpad with a 100 GB hard drive that is getting full (about 85GB).  I plan to buy a larger faster hard drive (probably a 7200 RPM 250 GB Western Digital one from New Egg:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279
First question; Are there any likely problems with upgrading to this hard drive?
Second, I still run XP and have recently purchased Windows 7 to install.  Should I clone existing drive contents to new drive and then change to Windows 7 or install Windows 7 on the existing hard drive and then move everything to the new drive?  Or some other scenario?
Finally, do I need to worry about the fall protection on this drive conflicting with the similar system in the laptop?
I'm fairly computer competent, but like it much better when I don't have to muck around inside the settings too much.
    Thanks,

someone else will probablly have to answer as to the compatibility of the new drive. but, as far as installing 7, are you planning an upgrade or do you actually have the os on disc.  if you have it on disc, i would probably install the new drive and load the new os right on it.  that way you would have your old drive with your old os as a backup just in case anything would go wrong.  if you are planning an upgrade then i would clone the old drive to the new drive and do the upgrade on the new drive. active protection and power management should still work the same but there have been a few posts on here concerning buggy drivers.  if your display starts freezing or lagging uninstall active protection first and if it still acts up then do the power management. but it should still work okay.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

    gj,
Unless it has worked since the upgrading, I believe you should uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows

How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows?

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

  • External Hard Drive (from windows to Mac)

    Hi Mac users!
I just moved from Windows to Mac and I'm very glad I made the switch. However, I am having some issues with my Win-Mac transistion. I have 3 external hard drives that I used under Windows to keep backups of my videos and personal files. Out of the 3 external hard drives, only one is recognized by OS X (10.5). I really need the other 2 to be recognized to transfer some more data to my new Mac system. Could you please help me to figure out what to do??
Here are some information on my 3 externl hard drives:
1 is a WD My Book (working fine)
1 is a La Cie Porsche model (Not working)
1 is a Ximeta (Not working)
I tried several USB ports, USB hubs. I have checked the Utilities to make sure the hard drive is not recognized/detected. Please, i need help to recover some important information and to complete my Windows-Mac transistion!
    Thank you for your help!

I had to ask...I also have to ask, when you tried a USB hub, was it an externally powered hub? Sometimes a USB disk won't mount because there isn't enough USB power. However, Mac OS has always given me an explicit message to that effect...
If your LaCie came with a CD, you might use it to install drivers. In principle, that shouldn't be necessary, but is a possibility. If it is a drivers issue then you may be SOL for the Ximeta; glancing at their website--but not necessarily for the right product--they seem to claim that their hard drives require Windows. But I've never had to install drivers on a Mac to use an external hard drive.
It shouldn't be an NTFS issue because NTFS is still readable, just not writable, as you already observed with the WD. The filesystem(s) should still mount.

  • Installed new hard drive and windows 7 at the same time. Left old hard drives in computer but unable to get bookmarks from old drives to new.

Installed new hard drive and windows 7 at the same time. Left old hard drives in computer, installed firefox however I have no idea in which file the old bookmarks are located. I still have the old files for firefox in the old drives.

Your "Firefox personal data", like bookmarks, are stored in your Profile folder in Firefox. See this support article about how to recover that data from that old hard drive and transfer it your your new Profile.

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

  • Load Leopard on a New Hard Drive with Windows XP already loaded

How can I load a new, fresh Leopard operating system on a new hard drive, with Windows XP already loaded and working on it's own independent hard drive via bootcamp beta. I have been using Tiger on it's own drive and wish to discontinue Tiger and move to Leopard without reloading windows. Can I just put in a new drive, and load Leopard with the Windows drive in place?
Please, any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Malcolm:
Thanks so much for replying to my question! I am new to MAC and have Tiger and Windows XP on separate drives. I will be removing the drive with Tiger and putting in a new drive to load Leopard and I wondered how that would effect accessing Windows XP since the Windows drive will remain in the system. Is there anything I need to do with bootcamp, since Windows was loaded using the Beta version of bootcamp, and bootcamp icon currently shows in the Windows XP taskbar. Tiger was pre-loaded when the computer was purchased. In fact I had to backdate the beta bootcamp version in order to get it to work. I hope this is not asking too much, but I wondered if there would any problem with Windows after the Leopard load.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

  • Booting a hard drive with Windows XP on it.

    Hi all,
I want to boot a hard drive that was in my mother's dead laptop from 10 years ago via a ATA/IDE to USB enclosure with my 2011 Macbook Pro 13''.
The hard drive has Windows XP on it and I am running Mountain Lion. I want to know if this is possible, and if so, how can I do it?
    Thank you in advance!

You can't boot from the XP drive, nor can your Mac run XP, but you can read it's files from the drive and copy them with the right adapter.
Mac's can read NTFS formatted drives, but can't write to them without additional paid software installed.
If there are files that can't be opened on the Mac, even with the free LibreOffice and VLC player, then you could install Windows 7 Pro + either into a virtual machine program or into Apple's BootCamp.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
Windows 7 Pro and above will run most XP programs, else they provide a XP download to virtualize XP in Win 7 that will run the files provided you have a compatible program installed.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-w indows-7
It can become quite complicated with three nested operating systems, so you need to have plenty of RAM, 16GB preferred.

  • Can my iSight work on partitioned hard drive with windows 7?

I have a macbook pro 17in screen, snow leopard. I have yet to get it updated to the latest operating system. I partitioned the hardrive to run windows 7. The built in iSight camera is not working. The dvd player will not visual to tv or projector. Yes.  If you are using BootCamp to boot Windows®, see  Apple - Support - Boot Camp for help.
If you are using an virtualization emulator like Parallels, VMware Fusion, CrossOver Mac, or VirtualBox, seek help from its support site.
kmburr wrote:... The built in iSight camera is not working....
If the problem continues after turning Mac off for a minute or two and restarting in Mac OS X with no external devices connected, see Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
Be sure to test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account.

I do not understand this sentence. We can try to help with this after you get your other problems corrected.  However, to minimize confusion among problems right now, I suggest you not respond to this unless you can explain how it is related to your other issues.
