Upgrading slot load iMac motherboard with later model

I have a 450 MHZ iMac DV. I recently found a 500 MHZ iMac motherboard with the 16 MB video chip on eBay for $15 so I figured I might as well go for it. I know the CPU heat sink is in a different place. Does anyone have any other advice for the swap (I've swapped motherboards between 350 & 450 iMacs efore so I have some experience with it).

I've swapped quite a few. It will work fine as long as you replace the power button as well. You'll need one with the white LED instead of the green/amber one currently installed.

  • How do I get Linux on Slot Loading iMac G3 350 running with Tiger OSX?

    Hi,
How do I get Linux (Ubuntu) running alongside Tiger 10.4 on an iMac G3? I have a 350MHz Slot Loading iMac G3 Indigo currently running OSX 10.4. I would like to have Ubuntu and OSX on the same computer, so when I boot, I can choose which OS to boot into.
I have tried several times, but I can't seem to boot from the Ubuntu PPC CD. In the Ubuntu pages, it says that there are two types of iMac G3's. New style and Old Style. Supposedly New style ones are easier to have Ubuntu on it, but I don't know which I have.
    Any help is appreciated.

The "new style" they refer to is probably distinguished by the type of optical drive it has. The two types are completely different designs (on the inside), but the most obvious visual difference is the slot-loading optical drive in the newer design, and the tray-loading optical drive in the older design.
As for Ubuntu, is it an old enough version you are trying, so that it works on PowerPC Macs. How did you burn the CD (?), because some of those old drives may have trouble with booting (or even reading) some CDRW media. CDR generally works

You can't just buy any Mac compatible RAM.  It has to be RAM specified as compatible with Late 2013 iMac.
Kingston does make such RAM, but you have to ask them which RAM is specified for it.   Do not buy ValueRAM.
http://www.macsales.com/ has been the most reliable third party RAM vendor.  Recently Crucial while good has had a few questionable issues which I'm still trying to figure out why.  Generally if you buy the RAM that says it is for your specific age of machine and model machine, you are good with lifetime warranty RAM.

  • Will the 24 cinema led display work with my imac 17inch 2006 late model?

Would like to buy one that will work with my imac late 2006 17inch 2.0 ghz intel core 2 duo
Anyone know or are they only for the notebooks. thanks

    Talked to an Apple Genius.
May be an apple, but definitely not a genius.
He stated that I could do it a lot cheaper by using two of Apples adapters.
It will be cheaper, but it won't work.
Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter 19 dollars and Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter 29 dollars. I bought both, they don't fit together.
There's a reason they don't fit together. The DVI ports on these adapters are DVI outputs only, meant to send DVI signals to displays. The DVI ports cannot be used as inputs, no matter what adapters or cables are used.
Now all I need is a 24 inch LED Cinema display to see how it works.
It won't. The digital video signals are very different between DVI and DisplayPort. You can use a cheap adapter to connect a DVI display to aDisplayPort computer because the DisplayPort graphics system recognizes the adapter and changes the video signals to the DVI format. The adapter then sends these signals to the correct pins on its DVI port. You can'y use a simple adapter the other way since DVI graphics controllers can't generate DisplayPort video signals.
You need a DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter.

  • Migrating Slot Loading iMac Power PC G3  Mac OS 10.4 to new iMac

My 10 year old iMac has been taking way too long to start up and has been shutting down by it's self. Made the mistake of trying to do a complete back up (instead of an incremental back up) on my last back up, When that completely erased my back up drive and then failed to complete the back up, it left me with me with no back up to the drive in the iMac, I realized that I would have to actually spend money and get a new 21" iMac.
I'm just starting to figure out that the new Intel based iMac may not be able to use or read all my Power PC files. And that maybe a straight migration may not work. Here is what I have done so far.
I downloaded the "A Basic Guide to Migrating to Intel Macs". From Discussions.
I managed to download my iPhoto library to an external drive.
I tried to down load my iTunes library to an external Hard drive, but the iMac shut down in the middle of the download.
My external drive has a Fire wire 400 and Fire wire 800 input.
The old iMac has Fire Wire 400 input, the new iMac had fire wire 800 input.
I'm going to get a Fire wire 400 to Fire wire 800 cable, and maybe a fire wire 800 to 800 cable.
Here is what I would like to Migrate, in order of importance.
    1.Photos
    2.iTunes music.
    3.Address Book
    4.Pages and Word documents
Anything else I could work around or live without.
Any hints or suggestions? Should I transfer cookies?
If I cannot transfer the files from the old iMac to the new, I'm considering taking out the hard drive from the old iMac and putting into an putting it in an external drive case, then trying to download from that. What do you think?

    A Brody;
I actually downloaded the tips earlier. That's where I found out that migrating from the Motorola Power PS chip to the newer Intel chips was not going to be easy.
Meanwhile my 10 year old iMac finally died. I tried to vacuum the inside in hopes that maybe dust was causing start up problems. When I put it back together it would not start at all. Went to plan "B" by tearing it apart again and removing the hard drive. I put it in the HD enclosure that was holding the original iMac 10 gig hard drive that I had pulled out years ago.
When I plugged it in to the new imac, it looked like everything was there. I copied photos, itunes music and all the personal files I could find.
Now I need to see if it possible to transfer play lists and book marks.
From the article I can see where to find the files I need to transfer. I can see dragging the files to the new iMac desktop. But once it get it to the desk top, how can I get the information imported to where it needs to go? Instructions are not clear on that.
The instructions say start the old mac in target disc mode, but of course the brains have been removed from the old iMac and is now a 200 gig external drive with questionable life expectancy.
    Thanks.

  • Any Idea How Temperatures Of New Imacs Compare With Previous Models ?

Has anyone had a chance to test or compare the operating temperatures of the new and old models ?
In particular I would like to know how the new entry 2.4GHz compares with the old 2.0GHz.

    Found my own answer...
Mid to late Feb, G73 series.
Gonna be hot!  Looks like they will be able to run all the most demanding games on highest settings.  Sweet deal.

  • Graphite Slot loading imac not starting

    Hi,
I was given a Graphite imac and told it did not work and did not have a hard drive. I also purchased a second logic board, hard drive, and optical drive. Pressing the front panel power switch causes a small green led near the DIMM slots to light up for less than a second, and I hear a CRT turn on crackle, then nothing more happens. swapping logic boards does not change things. Having a clock battery in or out does not seem to matter. Any suggestions on what I should try next would be appreciated.
    Thanks Mark

    Hey Mark,
Here's the section on the battery:
"Troubleshooting Logic Board Battery - 14
    Logic Board Battery
    Important:
Apple highly recommends removing the battery when
handling the logic board. Make sure to use proper ESD protection
    when handling modules.
The battery on the logic board controls the stored system settings,
such as date and time. It is only necessary to test the battery when
you can’t power on the computer, or the date and time are reset
every time the AC power is removed.
The battery is also used to power the PMU chip (because the PMU
chip keeps time and must always be running) when the computer
is unplugged from the wall (AC power). The PMU is
    very
    sensitive
and touching any circuitry that is connected to the PMU can cause
it to crash. If the PMU crashes, the battery life goes from about
five years to about two days if the PMU is not reset. Once the battery
goes dead, the PMU will reset the time and date to 12:00 AM
1/1/04 every time the AC power is removed. To fix this situation,
replace the battery and reset the PMU (refer to “Resetting
the PMU on the Logic Board” mentioned earlier in this chapter).
If the computer has a “No Power” situation, check the battery
before replacing modules. When checking the battery, make sure
the computer is unplugged. Measure the voltage across the battery’s
BT1 positive and ground terminals. The battery should read
3.3 volts to 3.7 volts. If it’s lower than 3.2 volts, replace the
battery and reset the PMU chip."
In my experience they're either over 3.3 volts, completely dead or a few tenths of a volt.
I have seen "PAV" in the discussion forums, does that refer to the small power >supply board coupled to the main logic board, on the same plane?
No that's the "down converter" It takes power from the PAV and converts it to logic board power. The PAV is the big brown board under the CRT. It has all those big parts on it.
What's the CPU speed? Also of the board you subed? How do I check?
If you're looking at the top of the board with the IDE and memory slots at the bottom right underneath there it will say: (eg on a 350 I have here) "part no." here 820-1051-A then "Apple Computer,Inc. ©1999" then a white barcoded label that says at the end 350MHz 64 MB
So this is a 350 that had 64 MB ram originally.
That I asked because depending on the speed the heat sinks will be in different places. This is only a problem if and when you get it booted and only between the 350-400s vs the 600-700s. There's also the issue of the heat transfer pads.

  • How do you change the pram battery on a slot loading iMac?

I'm hopeful that a new pram battery will solve the problems I've been having with my iMac. I just have to put it in, and judging by the correspondence I've seen on this subject, that's not an easy job. (One letter spoke of having to remove 16 screws) Does anyone know of a site that gives instructions complete with illustrations for changing the battery? It seems silly to have to take my set to a repair shop to change the battery, but I don't feel up to removing 16 screws without very clear instructions.

    Hello,
So far, so good. My computer started after I changed
the battery, however, I can't be sure until tomorrow
morning because my set was still warm when I started
it. Tomorrow is the acid test. I'll let you, and
everyone else who has tried to help me, then.
Glad to hear that you survived, and that it seems to be working
Let us know what you find tomorrow.
A few comments: Whatever happens, this experience
will give me more courage for the future. I now know
that I can open my computer without breaking
    anything--anything important, that is.
    That's always a good thing
Possible problem: After putting in the new battery, I
noticed a loose black wire with a metal tip right
    next to the battery.
    Interesting...
The only thing I could think of that might look like that might be the Airport antenna.
But, it could be something else. Without pictures, it would be hard to really guess at it.
    I hadn't noticed it before, so I
don't know if I might have accidentally unplugged it
from where it should be. Anyway, just to be sure, I
wrapped the metal tip with scotch tape to insulate it
in case it comes in contact with a metal part.
Was it attached to the logic board (the main circuit board which your battery was on)? Or, was it coming from somewhere inside the computer's case?
Any idea or description of where it's other end was attached?
I hate to tell you this now, but electrical tape would have been a better choice for insulating it. It's still possible for electrical current to pass through scotch-tape.
A small, white polyethene? part fell out during my
activities. I can only hope that it's not essential.
Without a description, it's hard to say what that might have been.
Does it look like a bracket? If so, it may have gone around one of the connectors around the CD-ROM drive connectors, or one of the other cables you disconnected.
Otherwise, if it doesn't appear to have a function, it might just be a piece of broken plastic.
If it's flat and rectangular, it could also be a cap that goes over the battery. But, those are usually black with a couple of tabs to hold it in-place.
Also, it looks like two small, flat, grayish tabs got
snapped off the bottom panel when I removed it.
That happens sometimes. I was fortunate with my system. I've opened it many times without breaking anything (yet).
I didn't find the job to be easy, but maybe that's
because I was stresed out during the whole operation.
    Yes, that doesn't help.
Fear was the problem. I was afraid that I might touch
the wrong part, I was afraid that I might drop a
screw ito the computer, I was afraid that I was going
to break the bottom panel in the process of removing
it, etc. The most difficult step was replacing the
heat shield. For a while, I thought that I would have
to give up and just attach it as best I could.
Glad to hear it all went back together.
Hopefully the extra parts and cable were not important. I would feel better figuring out what they were if it were my machine. But, it's up to you if you want to delve back in there and try and figure it out.
Well, that's a summary of Niku's excellent adventure
in the computer repair world. Tomorrow I'll know if I
    was successful. Wish me luck.
Thank you for the update. I hope all goes well and continues working for you.

  • Slot load iMac won't boot in OS X but will in OS 9

I'm running OS X 10.3.x and OS 9.2.2. Everything works fine in OS 9 but when attempting to boot in OS X it stops at the apple icon. A strange thing happens at that time....the apple icon drops slightly downward. I have booted from an emergency boot disk and was able to repair permissions using Apple's Disk Utility...no help. I have also replaced the OS X system folder from a known operating computer of the same setup.....no difference. (I've never done this so don't know if it will even work but I did not delete the old system)
    Ideas?????

    Mel,
Try rebooting with peripherals disconnected (if any) as per this Apple Knowledge Base Article along with the tip found in this same article for checking the disk with Disk Utility from your startup disk. Reboot with your install disk #1 while holding the "c" key and then (ignore the installer splash screen) go to the Installer Menu in the top menu bar and select Disk Utility and when this opens select your HD and then click Repair Disk. Note any errors it cannot repair and post them back here. If "OK" appears when run you can quit the Disk Utility and then quit the Installer which will ask to restart the computer. Let us know if that helps.
Post back if still no luck,

  • (L305D-S5934)Processor upgrades? Is it possible with my model?

I have the Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934, and everything about this laptop is dandy... Besides it's processor.
The AMD Turion X2 was a great processor, maybe 3 years ago... But, in this day and age - it doesn't help me run jack.  My ATI Radeon 3100 graphics card is growing old too, but I'm pretty sure that there is no way for me to change it.
    Help?

You can upgrade to Yosemite. You WILL NOT be happy running in only 2gb of ram, you need AT LEAST 4gb and more is better.

  • 16gb of ram compatible with late model 2.4ghz 15" mbp?

read online that people are putting 16gb of ram in thier mbp. any issue known to anyone by doing that? anything info would help, thanks.

    Hi ellachi,
I've had 16GB a little shy of two years.  I have a late 2011 MBP 15 inch.  You won't actually use the memory unless you have a memory intensive application like VMware fusion.
I do use virtualization for developer work, and it makes a huge difference to have 16 Gb.  I also use a windows VM to run MsOffice on a Windows 7 guest on my MBP.   When I'm not doing that; under normal use (I just checked right now), I use 5.17 GB of memory.
Buy very good RAM.  Don't buy the cheapest as intermittent memory problems are very difficult to diagnose.  Hope this helped and good luck.

  • IMac G3 DV Slot Loaded DVD 400 Mhz. 384RAM 10GB HD - Tiger Install?

iMac G3 DV Slot Loaded DVD 400Mhz.384RAM 10GB Hard Drive OS 9.2.2 - Tiger Install
Ok, I am getting Tiger Disks this week. I want to know the procedure for installing it, from beginning to end. I'm currently running OS 9.2.2 (latest updates) & I have the latest 4.1 Firmware Update. On this model, will I have to first Partition the Drive as suggested with the Tray Loaders ? Also, I read somewhere that I can upgrade to 1GB Ram on this model. Is this correct ? Help!!

Bringing G3 iMacs and Other G3 Macs into the Tiger Age
    http://lowendmac.com/macdan/md07/1207.html
There are some CD versions of tiger.
    http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=111
You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
Some machine may not contain the firmware level but some other number which can be translated to the firmware level.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the updates from the Apple site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1387?viewlocale=en_US
For tiger, you need 256meg of memory. For panther, you need 128 meg of memory.
Also, I read somewhere that I can upgrade to 1GB Ram on this model. Is this correct ? Help!!
    Yes.

  • Imac (slot loading) won't boot from CD

    Hello,
My imac (350 MHz G3 blue coloured) does not want to boot from a CD. I need to erase the hard drive with the Disk Utility but it will not start up from the CD. I held down the "C" key at startup and it keeps flashing the question mark symbol at the grey screen. What can I do?
Can I use open firmware commands? I already tried reset-nvram and reset-all but that didn't work.
You see I better give the background info here:
I removed the original 9 GIG hard drive and replaced it with a blank 80 GIG drive. I thought I could then format it from a startup CD and then reinstall the OS. No luck. It doesn't boot at all from the CD.
Then I tried taking out the hard drive again and this time I installed OS 10.1.5 onto it from another computer. (It is the only appropriate OSX I have.) I then put the hard drive back into the slot loading imac and hoped the imac would like it and boot up. Again, no luck.
    Any suggestions,
can I use some magic open firmware commands?
Did I not install the hard drive correctly? i.e. are you not supposed to just remove and swap hard drives with imacs? I just followed a pdf instruction manual - didn't take than long.
How can I make this imac boot? (Its stuck on the grey screen with the flashing question mark.
    Thanks!

A Jumper is meant a little -mostly- black plug that connects two pins of your harddrive. That Pins are next to the connector where the cable is plugged into. There you have two pins for Master, two for Slave and two for Cable select. You must select Master in a 350 MHz to get the HD working.
Just ask someone in a Computer store to help you with the Jumper.
By the way, my 350 is the only iMac I have seen which doesn't even take a notice of presseing "C" at startup. I have to press the Option (ALT) key and select the CD Rom from the boot up menu. Everything else is ignored...

  • Problem with OSX software updates on Slot Loading Mac

Hello to all. Here is my situation. I recently upgraded my Mac (400)from 9.2.2 to OS X.3. After installing the first round of updates all is fine. As soon as I run the second round to 10.3.9 my machine starts acting weird. On start, when you see the grey screen w/ an Apple, the circular progress bar thing seems to hesitate a lot. As soon as the desktop appears. I can barley control my mouse. It is so choppy, it seems to jump all over the screen. I've made sure my firmware was up to date. I tried swapping out my memory and hard drive and still have the problem. Does anyone havve any suggestions??? Thanks guys.

    I originally had a 10GB hard drive. I also tried a 15GB hard drive.
Yes, but how much was free/available? Click once on the hard drive icon, then from the File menu select Get Info. You will see how much free space you have on the hard drive. IME you need 2 GB or more free to make OS X happy.
I read someplace that you had to have memory in pairs...
That it not true for the slot loading iMac.
Usually choppy performance is due to lack of RAM or lack or hard drive space.

  • Graphite slot-loading G3 iMac drive failure

Hi. My G3 Graphite slot-loading iMac hard drive died this past week, or at least I thing it did. It has the original hard drive in it and is at least 10 years old, maybe more. It is a 60g drive with 2 partitions: 50g for OS X and 10g for OS 9.2. Now I hardly ever use the OS 9.2 partition, but I just never got rid of it.
It's the OS X partition that failed. I was working on it this past Saturday and I notice it was acting strange and slow. It froze on me twice and I was force to shut it down both times by pressing the white glowing on button on the front. Well, after that second restart is when the trouble started. I heard the start-up chime and that was it, just a gray screen for a long time, then the question mark and then, after several minutes, it booted into OS 9.2.
The OS X partition was completely unavailable. The only way I was able to see it was to boot the G3 in target disc mode and attached it thru firewire to my G4 iMac. In Disk Utility, the OS X partition came up as an unmounted drive. Disk Utility could not verify or fixed it. So I tried Disk Warrior 4. Disk Warrior was unable to fix it. So I purchased Prosoft Data Rescue ll and a new internal hard drive.
Data Rescue ll was able to recover all my files, but with some errors. So, I went and purchased a hard drive enclosure, put the internal hard drive in it, had Data Rescue II clone the entire G3 hd, and then had Data Rescue recover from the clone, with the same results. Prosoft support decipher the error messages to be reporting that some data was missing. Still waiting to hear from them exactly what that means.
Now I wrote all that to get to this question: If a partition fails on a single hd, does that mean the whole drive is bad? I thought that when you drive fails, you would not be able to see any of the partitions on it. Obviously, I'm going to replace it with the new internal drive that is currently serving as my clone drive. But, I was just wondering how this drive failed. I was going to try and see if I can reinitialized it and if so, reinstall OS X and see what happens. Or do you thing that is a waste of time? As i write this, the G3 is running in target disc mode and the drive sounds fine, not making any noise what so ever. I was wondering if this is an actual drive failure or somehow, when I rebooted the system folder got so damaged that it put the partition in the state it is currently in.
I'd like to know becuase, if I can just reinstall OS 10.4 and have access to that partition, I could back-up all my files that way and possibly have no missing data.
So any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Is the OS X partition installed at the beginning of the hard drive? If so, that's the area of the platter(s) that has seen the most usage over the years, so it may have developed surface damage, affecting the reliability of reads and writes. This wouldn't necessarily cause a difference in operational noise coming from the drive. One partition may continue functioning normally, while the other one occupying a bad area of the drive continues to have errors. The problem with copying files from a quirky drive is that you can likely duplicate the same corrupted files as were found on the original. If time is of no consequence, you could erase that partition and install Tiger again, but I'd use the original installer disk and not clone from the problematic partition. I had a 40 GB drive in a beige G3 that would cause unexpected system hangs. Because Drive Setup's Test Disk function and NDD's Media Scan would hang after a few minutes into the process, I estimated the problem area to be within the first 2 GBs of the drive. My solution was to create (3) partitions, with the first one set to 2 GBs, and the second and third partitions equally dividing the remaining drive capacity. With Drive Setup, I de-selected the "Mount on Startup" option for partition 1, so it disappeared from the desktop. I installed the OS on the second partition and designated the third for file storage. With that partition configuration, the G3 never had the unexpected system hangs that had plagued it previously.
