Upgrading to FCE4?

Hi all,
I just got an HDR-SR12 Sony Handycam for Christmas and I'm trying to get started editing. I have FCE v3.5 and from what I understand, I need to upgrade to FCE4 to edit the HD footage from the camera.
On the Apple store website, it says that I can upgrade my copy of FCE v3.5 to v.4 for 100 bucks. However, the fine print says that Academic and not-for-resale copies of v.3.5 aren't eligible for the upgrade. I received my copy of v.3.5 pre-installed on my MBP when I bought it. I added it to the bundle which cost and extra 200 bucks when I was going through the purchase options on the Apple website. This was over a year ago.
What I'm asking is whether I'm eligible for the upgrade. Technically, I purchased the full version of 3.5 for 200 dollars but I don't know if it's considered a not-for-resale copy.
Any help?

Technically, I purchased the full version of 3.5 for 200 dollars
You purchased the full version. Is there a reason you think that it isn't eligible for an upgrade?

  • Cannot capture Hi8 run through digitizer

Bought FCE2 installed with Mac g5 a few years ago only to capture and copy to DVD old video - Hi8 and DV. It virtually never worked. Dozens of hours trying every conceivable combo of settings. When I hit NOW, it either 1] gave "General Error," froze, wouldn't close or force quit without restarting, or 2] appear to be capturing for 5 minutes 13 seconds (consistently), then freeze, yielding a file of 21.27 GB (when "Limit capture" was set to 100 minutes) that was labelled Quicktime Movie, but would not play.
But about once a year, it successfully captured an hour or so of DV tape or Hi8 tape run through a Sony TRV950 with "A/V>DV OUT" set to "ON." That is, I play the Hi8 tape in an analog camcorder running its output into the TRV950 set to digitize it. Output from 950 goes to computer. I got playable Quicktime movies from both Hi8 and DV tapes.
With resentment, because I paid for FCE2 to work, I bought the upgrade to FCE4. It is working reliably to capture DV tape (but not export it), but it will not capture the Hi8 run through the Sony digitizing feature. When I hit NOW, I get the large black rectangle and "Waiting for timecode." But never get past that. I am using the identical setup as with FCE2 during the very rare occasions on which it functioned normally. The Hi8 tapes have a timecode, the same type that occasionally worked with FCE2.
Any helpful insights from the experienced?
For capture scratch, I use a second internal HD - 750 GB with 32 MB cache. I have also tried a large external HD and the Mac's primary HD. Same result.
    Thanks for your time.

    Great news TT.
    1. With the new Setup setting, I have successfully captured a long Hi8.
An Easy Setup change only effects NEW Projects. DV Converter is the correct Easy Setup for use where a NON-Controllable device is being used.
    2. On my newly installed second internal drive, I formatted as Extended (journalled). I do not know >the formatting of the main Mac internal drive.
Right/Option Click on your system drive icon on the Desktop and select Get Info from the menu.
What is the significance of these two items?
Anti-virus apps can think your incoming footage is nasty and tries to block it. iSight if active is competing for a chunk of incoming video.

  • Big Difference in Final Cut Express Versions????

I still own Final Cut Express 2.02 (2004) but never really was able to master it, and went back to iMovie for my editing.
Now, I'm thinking about making the jump again, but am curious how different Final Cut Express HD or Final Cut Express 4.0 is from the version that I own. (Which by the way doesn't even work on my iMac because it says I don't have a APG Graphics card).
I guess that's a long way of asking your opinion if the newer versions are better and/or any easier or more user friendly than Final Cut Express 2.0. Also curious what the learning curve is. I really struggled on the 2.0 version.

    Hello Todd,
The user interface and all of the basic functions including editing, filters, exporting are the same in the later versions of Final Cut Express.
Later versions than 2.02 added more filters & features including support for HD video (HDV & AVCHD). The one major deletion was SoundTrack was removed from the FCE package when FCE4 was released.
Beyond features, one of the main considerations is what versions of OSX and QuickTime you are running. With Leopard, you should really be on FCE 4. Since you already have v2.02 you can purchase the upgrade to FCE4 ($99) instead of another copy of the full program.
With regard to learning FCE, you should get a copy of Tom Wolsky's book Final Cut Express Editing Workshop and his tutorial DVD Final Cut Express Made Easy. They are excellent materials for learning how to use FCE quickly. The book also includes a DVD with sample clips that go with the examples in the book; and he explains the differences between iMovie and FCE, which can be very helpful for someone making that transition.

  • Pictures are shaking as key framing moves them

I make montages with FCE--I upgraded to FCE4. My current montage is shaking when played on DVD--I burn through iDVD. The image 'lines'appear to shake when I have key framed them to move as in the Ken Burns effect. Haven't had this problem before--any suggestions? Last time I saw this 'wavy' 'shaking' was when I tried to put a document with text and the text appeared to wave. Should I upgrade my operating system? I have noticed FCE drops frames frequently during playback. Connected?
    Thanks for help

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You see interlace problem as your material start from a still frame, an non interlaced material. This problem is normal with interlaced video sequence.
Apply a de-interlace filter or a deflicker. Add some blur may help to.
There are many posts in this forum about stills picture. Look at them there are many workarounds.

  • FCE version 3.5 compatible with Snow Leopard?

I have a new Mac Pro running OS 10.6.2. Does anyone know whether Final Cut Express (version 3.5) is compatible with Snow Leopard? I really like that this version has Live Type and Soundtrack, which is why I want to install it, instead of upgrading to version 4. Thanks.

I believe FCE4 is technically the only version supported by Apple for use with Snow Leopard. (I'm sure Tom will correct me if I'm wrong!) That being said, many people have found that it still works.
If you upgrade to FCE4, the projects from the old version will work fine. However, you will not be able to open any FCE4 projects in your old FCE3.5 (you probably wouldn't want to anyway).

  • FCP on PBG4 - Here's the plan

So, my upgrade to FCE4 (from FCE3) didn't go as well as planned. I thought I'd be able to work on a sequence in FCE4, then move to FCP6 and finalize it. (I have access to a Mac Pro with FCP6, but only on occasion). I found out that FCP6 won't read FCE4 sequences because FCE4 is too new.
So, how about this plan: Buy and install FCP6 on my aging PB G4 (1.67, 2gbs ram). Then I can work on the sequences (albeit slowly), and move the sequence to the Mac Pro when I'm ready for heavier lifting and finalization (Motion, Color, Compressor, etc.).
AND, when I upgrade to a MacBook Pro in the coming months, I can just reinstall FCP6 there, right?
So, does that make sense, or am I missing something? (Like, it won't translate well from PB to Mac Pro, or something).

Your plan will probably work, your powerbook is underpowered for FCP 6 as you know.
But if you can get it installed (the video card is the limiting factor, I believe), you should be able to limp along.
You will want all your media on an external hard drive (firewire, 800 if the PB has it). (you didn't mention your format, hopefully dv).
Get that new Macbook Pro asap. and yes it will install just fine on that. Get lots of RAM (quality 3rd party)

  • Is my old version of FCE HD obsolete?

I have just bought a closeout MBP that won't open my old version of FCE HD. I get a message saying that I don't have a AGP graphics card (which is probably correct, i have a much better one, right?).
But i don't use the program so often that i want to buy an upgrade. is there a patch or something i can download to make FCE HD work?

Press <esc> and FCE will probably open.
What version is this? You should upgrade to FCE4 take advantage of your Intel processor.

  • Can one deauthorize FCE HD 3.5 so that another user can install?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
    1. Is there a limited number of installs one is permitted with FCE? How do I deauthorize 3.5 in my computer so that it can be installed anew on another's computer? Put another way, how do I transfer the 3.5 Serial Number over to someone else?
    2. I have FCE 4 now. Can I install that over my FCE HD 3.5 imbedded in computer now? Or should I uninstall FCE 3.5 first? From what I read, no easy way to uninstall 3.5
    3. Like in iTunes, if one gets a new computer, you can deauthorize your old one, and reinstall your iTunes purchases anew in your new computer.

    1. The FCE license allows you to install on one desktop and one laptop as long as you own both, are the user of both, and only use it on one machine at at time. This is somewhat on the honor system. There is no formal deauthorization like there is in iTunes. You can transfer the 3.5 license to someone else as long as you don't keep 3.5 on your system and you don't use 3.5 as the basis for upgrading to FCE4 (i.e. the $99 upgrade as opposed to the $299 full license).
    2. Yes, you can install FCE4 over FCE 3.5. If you really want to uninstall FCE3.5 first, here are the instructions.
But be honest here. If you purchased the FCE 4 upgrade (as opposed to the full version) for the purpose of upgrading from FCE 3.5 then you are legally not allowed to transfer the 3.5 version to someone else, or even to another computer that you own. You will need the 3.5 serial number in order to install 4.0
    3. FCE is not like iTunes.

  • Can she use Final Cut Express 3.5?

My daughter, a journalism grad student, asked me to get Final Cut PRO for use in a class. I have new unopened Final Cut Express, v3.5 in hand. (Purchased a few years ago and never used it). Can she use this product? What will we lose with FCE?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
The suitability of FCE will largely depend on the media your daughter is working with. FCE works in fixed resolutions with a limited number of codecs. FCP is much more flexible in that regard, but is only available as part of the Final Cut Studio package. If she'll be using AVCHD media, she'll need to upgrade to FCE4.

  • AVCHD in Final Cut Express HD?

I just got myself a Canon HG10, I have final cut express HD. Is there a way to get Final Cut Express HD to support AVCHD?

There's the Voltaic converter (http://shedworx.com/), but that might be more complicated than upgrading to FCE4, unless you're using a PPC Mac or there's some other reason why FCE4's AVCHD support won't work for you.

  • Do the Mac Pro comps come loaded with Final Cut Express 4?

I have Final cut Express 3.5 which i bought for my G5 mac. but i'm moving to a Mac Pro soon and i heard that it may not be compatible in snow leopard.
I know the Mac store includes FCE 4 with your mac pro purchase( they allow you to select between FCE , iWorks, etc) but does FCE 4 come with the mac pro if you buy in your town's mac store?

If you have a retail version of FCE3.5 and your original serial number, you can purchase an upgrade to FCE4 and save $100.

  • Final Cut Express 2.0.3

Late last year I this new iMac with OS 10.6.3. I tried to open my old copy of Final Cut Express 2.0.3 which has always worked fine with my old Mac.(with 10.4.11). It won't even load. It says I need an AGP Graphics card! Both systems are fairly stock. I never added any graphics card. I find it very annoying that my new system has no technology equal to that and that I can not use my software any longer. Is there a patch out there or some other solution?

Try hitting the Escape key when you get the message.
I'd suggest an upgrade to FCE4 as the newer OS and the newer FCE will give you a happier marriage.

  • FCE 4 Problem: Color bar thru the Viewer

I just upgraded to FCE4 and have found two annoyances already....
1)I get a horizontal color bar running thru the middle of the image in the viewer. It's mostly an aqua color but there are shades of other colors in it (which vary from image to image). Is this some sort of new feature or is something wrong here. I sure can't see (or imagine) any purpose to it. I did two installs -- on an iMac and a MacBook Pro -- and the problem is only showing up on the iMac.
    2) The controls seem very different... In 3.5 you could right click on a clip to cut it from the timeline. Can't do that now. Are the controls really that different from 3.0 & 3.5, or is this another glitch?
As long as I'm asking questions... Anyone got a good text/manual to recommend? It's feeling like I need to re-learn how to use FCE. I wouldn't have expected an upgrade to be so different from the earlier version (eg, right clicking to cut and paste clips should have stayed unchanged, in my book).
Thanks for any help you care to offer..

    Tom,
Thanks for your response. Here's a screenshot...
    http://bp3.blogger.com/_GjFJqLYOsHk/SFkdJVij1wI/AAAAAAAAAB4/THLT-fZ41v4/s1600-h/ Picture+1.png
I've also deleted FCE4 from the HD (also deleting the plist file and the project file) and reinstalled it; after importing the same files, I get the same result. Other things I've noticed...
    1) If I import the same files into FCE4 on my MacBookPro I have no problem.
    2) Once I drop the file from the Viewer onto the timeline, and then re-open it in th Viewer from the timeline, the color bar is gone.
    3) The color bar is not showing up in the Canvas or the icons on the Timeline.
    4) If I import the same files into FCE 3.5.1, I have no problem. (BTW, I'm back to using 3.5.1 until I receive my copy of your book.)
So the imported files are not corrupt; the problem is somewhere else. Or maybe I'm just missing something obvious (well, it'd have to be less than obvious).
Thanks for any thoughts you may have,
    Seismo

  • FCE and Canon HV20/30

I'm about to upgrade my camera. Anyone hear or experience any problems with compatibility between the above cameras and FCE3.5HD?
    Thanks.
ps Is it worth upgrading to FCE4?

Short and sweet, answers I like. I assume you've done good work with the HV20?

  • FCE 4 Installation

I upgraded to FCE4 from FCEHD. First, the look has not changed. The browser is still in the upper left.
Also, I thought the current project I'm working on would automatically transfer to FNC4. All my captured video is on a Lacie d2 Quadra external hard drive. Do I have to import all those hours of video from the external hard drive to FCE4? So far, I've only captured video. I have not done any editing.
Finally, when I tried to register FCE4, the "register" option was not active. So I clicked on "register later." Now I can't find it.

well, if the look hasn't changed, maybe it's because there are no issues with it. why would you wanna change if there are no problems and you have a great look and great versatility?
"the browser is still in the upper left... well, if you don't like it upper left make it upper right! you can change position, size, format on every window of the FCE.
for your last question, you dont need to import it all over again. simply go to file>open and open your old project...
    cheers!
