Upgrading to Tiger AFTER installing PHP 5

Upgrading OS X to Tiger disabled PHP 5 for me, and I'm posting this in case it helps anyone with a similar setup. I have seen posts elsewhere on editing the Apache config file to re-enable PHP 4 after upgrade to Tiger, but the instructions there didn't work for re-enabling PHP 5.
One small caveat. I'm not a professional programmer and have little experience with command lines, so I have a little trepidation giving advice to others. But what I did here worked, so I guess it's okay.
After the upgrade to Tiger, PHP wasn't running, and PHP files would display in my Web browser as text. Apparently, Tiger installs PHP 4 and an Apache config file that points to that installation, ignoring whether or not PHP 5 might be present. It doesn't overwrite PHP 5, it just points the server back to the earlier version. Re-enabling PHP 4 left me unable to connect to my MySQL 5 databases, producing this error: "Client does not support authentication protocol." This is because PHP 4 doesn't have the MySQL library that PHP 5 has.
Following is what I did. Using BBEdit, I chose File > Open Hidden and opened Macintosh HD/private/etc/httpd/httpd.conf, which is the Apache Web server configuration file. I changed three lines.
The first is line 240 in my file:
#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
Remove the hash mark at the beginning of the line and change it to:
LoadModule php5_module /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so
NOTE: I installed PHP 5 from Marc Liyanage's installer. If you installed it another way, this path may not work for you. You need to find the path to the "libphp5.so" file and enter that here.
The second line is line 284 in my file:
#AddModule mod_php4.c
Again, remove the hash mark, and change it to:
AddModule mod_php5.c
Finally, near the end, in line 1079 in my file:
<IfModule mod_php4.c>
Change to:
<IfModule mod_php5.c>
Save and close the file. Go to System Preferences > Sharing > Services. Click on Personal Web Sharing and click Stop. When the server stops (it should take only a second), click Start. When the control panel says that Personal Web Sharing is on, test your PHP 5 files that connect to MySQL 5 databases. They should work now.

Web Sharing Not Starting Up After installing PHP

On Mac OS 10.4.9 on a G4 PPowerbook, using O'Reilly's "Learning PHP and MySQL," my Personal Web Sharing will not start up.
I enabled Apache per their instructions and things seemed fine.. Then I i installed PHP with these commands, sudo vi/etc/httpd/httpd.conf , then %s/#LoadModule php/LoadModule php/. Then %x/#AddModule php/AddModule php/. Then <espcape>:wq. Then

First of all, the test query from the book didn't work quite right, but now my Personal Web Sharing won't start up. It says "starting up." forever.
Help. And if you can't tell, I have extremely limited knowledge of Unix and command lines, etc.
What do I do? Assume I know nothing... : )

The first thing to do is read the Apache error log which will give you more detail about what's gone wrong.
<pre class=command>tail /var/log/httpd/error_log</pre>
The other thing to do is run configtest which might also indicate errors in the configuration:
<pre class=command>sudo apachectl configtest</pre>
although it'll probably tell you the same thing as the error log.

PB G4- Upgrading to Tiger after restore, update doesn't install

HI everyone..I restored my powerbook 17" 1.5Ghz. It came with panther 10.3.4. I restored the computer, erased everything, after installation i did NOT do any updates, i just put the Tiger DVD in and let it run. When 10.4 was installed i tried to get the updates for 10.4.10 , they download, but they don't install. It says it can't be installed?Any ideas? DO i need to download 10.3.9 before i just to tiger?

Would it be possible to upgrade an iBook G4 from Panther to Tiger by using the two grey Tiger install disks, or should an upgrade disk be used instead?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

IBook G4 looking to upgrade to Tiger after Leopard release

Folks - tried to search, but had no idea on how to search for it because this has to be a popular question.
I'm getting ready to buy an iBook G4 1.2/768/60 that has Panther. I'm making the assumption that the iBook may not be able to run Leopard or run it extremely poor. So can I do this kabookie-dance regarding OSs and licenses.
After I upgrade my iMac G5 to Leopard - can I use the iMac's install discs to put Tiger on the iBook? I know there are a lot of what-ifs - but I'm assuming the install process is smart enough to say "Hey - I'm install on a iBook - so load these drivers and such" and concerning the licenses - I see it as it's just being handed down - kinda like sibling clothes.
So, besides a lot of assuming (which I know what is does..), will this work/feasible?

Probably won't work. The install discs that come with a computer are made to look for that computer model. Therefore an iMac install DVD or CD will look for an iMac and won't work on an iBook.
Don't give up on Leopard. I have a feeling it will work on the iBook, with enough memory. The iBook you have is a farely recent model, in the scheme of things.
I wouldn't expect it to run on a G3, but probably a G4.

Won't upgrade iphoto library after install of iphoto 6!

I keep getting an error message that says "library can't upgrade because current user doesn't have access" .
This happens after I installed iphoto 6, everything seems to have gone fine, but then after waiting 10 mins from my previous library to update, I get that message. (my friend burned me the ilife 6 dmg. file which is what I used to upgrade from previous iphoto)
My question is, can I just delete any existing iPhotos and just start from scratch and install iPhoto 6 all over again? In other words, instead of trying to use my friends burned dmg. file. can I just erase everything and start from scratch by purchasing the iLife 6 Install DVD??
I won't lose all of my pictures right? I've backed them up via an external harddrive and they are also in my pictures folder as well.
I just want to know if I can erase iphoto (by placing in trashing can) and starting fresh with the iphoto 6 install DVD.
any help would be great.....right now I'm stuck in limbo, and can't order new prints or anything

Problem with starting IWS6.0 after installing PHP

I recently installed php40 with IWS60 running on sparc sol8. When
starting webserver from either command lines or admin panel, the server
failed to start with the following errors:
start failed. (2: unknown early startup error)

failure: server exit: status 1 (Interrupted system call)

An error occurred during startup.
The server https-dhcppc0 was not started.
Looking at error logs, these are the following errors:

security (18731): Temporary directory /tmp (specified by the TempDir
magnus.conf directive) is not owned by the server user. This is a

Ok - now I look at /tmp folder and its owned by sys and group sys. In
addition, I went in and look at magnus.conf file and there is a line of:
TempDir /tmp/https-dhcppc0-ab0d7966. I deleted (remaned to something
else) that file in /tmp folder but still getting the same errors.
Could someone help to tell me what going on with these errors which
prevented the server to start.

The error is pretty explicit about wha tthe problem is.
Look at the /tmp/https-dhcppc0-ab0d7966 directory. What are it's
permissions? They should be 700 for the UID iWS runs as. Here's mine:

Photoshop did not upgrade to Extended after install?

I had cs6 creative suite standard and upgrade to Cs6 creative suite design and web premium, and it did not upgrade my Photoshop to the extended version (which is the whole reason i bought it) Heeeelp?

Deactivate the suite under Help --> Deactivate and let it reactivate. Also you may need to clear out your cache.db for the activation system (C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD\cache on Windows). Other users have reported this problem. And of course make sure your system actually supports all Extended features so they are accessible, meaning your graphics hardware and configuration must be up to speed to use 3D and otehr features...

I can see all the apps, click on them, but none of them will open. How can I make them work again, since the Appstore will not allow me to reinstall the apps? The only apps that are working are the ones pre-installed by the upgrade.

Try downloading any free app using the App Store on the phone.

Help upgrading to Tiger from OS 9.2

Okay. I have a PowerBook G4 (400) with 512 MB of RAM and 20GB of disk space running OS 9.2.2. I've updated the Firmware and am attempting to upgrade to Tiger with install disks that I received with my new G5 tower.
After selecting the language, I'm getting an alert that says "This software can not be installed on this computer." What am I missing? Can I not upgrade with these install disks?

May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
Besides being illegal, the install disks for a G5 tower are specific for that hardware and don't have the drivers necessary for the PowerBook.

I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

Installing Office 2004 after upgrade to Tiger

I am upgrading to Tiger from Panther and do not want to lose Office for Mac. I have the 2004 version which I have upgraded in Panther up to 11.3.8. I will have to install the standard Office 2004 for Mac from the CD. Can Tiger accept this early version so that I can upgrade by downloading improved versions?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Just be sure to Repair Permissions before & after any upgrade/install/updates.
The usual reason why updates/installs/upgrades fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.

Optical drive problems after upgrade to Tiger 10.4.10

I've just had my machine updated to Tiger 10.4.10 after having two new hard drives installed after a hard drive failure. I'm now having issues with burning data for backup purposes.
I can't burn anything with Mac OS Disc Burner utility, it doesn't seem to recognize blank disc's DVD's or CD's. It keeps telling me to load a disc when one is already in the drive.
System profiler recognizes CD-R's & DVD-R's when they are in the optical drive
I can burn with Toast Titanium ver 6.0.3 DVD's & CD's. The burned CD's will mount. The burned DVD's will not mount.
I have checked the burned DVD's in the optical drive of my iBook G4 Mac OS 10.3.9 and they mount on it fine.
Movie DVD's will mount & play. Software DVD's will mount and load applications.
I have cleaned the drive with a cleaning disc.
The Optical Drive was working fine before the upgrade, so what is the problem?
I can only assume two problems now!
1.) the optical drive has a physical malfunction
2.) there is a software issue between Tiger 10.4.10 & this optical drive (this is my favorite at the moment)
The upgrade was done by an Apple Authorised Service Provider they say there are no issues with Tiger & the optical drive.
So any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I bought my G5 with Panther OS on it a few years ago. The DVD drive functioned perfectly back then. Then I upgraded to Tiger this past year which caused the DVD drive to open later..that is, I'd have to hold down the eject button for a good 2 or 3 seconds before it would open or close. Previously it responded instantly. Now what happens more and more is it can't read DVD-ROM disks that it has burned. My imac G4 with Jaguar has no trouble reading the disks but Tiger 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 simply refuse to mount DVD ROM disks that it burned.
I'm trying to make a duplicate DVD of the offending disk on my single-processor G4 and then put THAT disk into the G5 so it can read the info. Hopefully that will be my work-around.
It's got to be a software issue and I keep hoping the Apple wiz kids will put out an update to remedy this. Something's fishy with the DVD drive programming.

I upgraded 2 days ago to Tiger via Erase and Install. I was very nervous but I had no problem with the upgrade itself. The Set up assistant brought back my files from my back up on FWdrive and everything seems to be fine. I followed the "take control of upgrading to Tiger" step by step. I have not yet restored missing files as it is advised but I really don't know what to restore !
When I went through the Preference system, the panes all worked fine except the "desk and screen saver" pane, which behaves strangely: it opens and immediately crashes. A dialogue appears with 3 choices: "close/report or open again" (in this order). I choose "open again" and the same happens when I select the "desk and screen saver".
But, this time, another dialogue appears with "close/ retry/report" (in this order). I choose "retry" this time and the whole Preference system reappears… in japanese !
I live in Japan but I am french so my system is in french. Now, with the Pref Sys in japanese it works when I click on the desk and sreen saver pane, but I don't have anymore my selection of pictures for the desk (of course I can get them back from my pictures). When I close it I get a message (in english): "new settings have been created for this application. Do you wish to use these settings from now on ? "
choice is: use new settings / use original settings.
I tried both. But this pane crashes again after I open it (in french and not in japanese) from the Apple menu or the icon on the side as usual.
It is not a life threatening situation but it is bothering if I have to go through the whole circus each time I want to change the picture of my desk !
other anomalies:
the Iphoto and iMovie applications do the same.
the Quick Time Player does not open at all.
the iTunes app tells me that the files cannot be read because they were created with a later version of iTunes (the install DVD of Tiger is for Tiger 10.4.6 and the iTunes version is 6.0.4. But I had updated my iTunes while I was using OSX 10.3.9 and I have the 7.6 version on my back up). I guess updating the OS will be enough to fix this ?!
last thing (but not the least): when I want to add an URL to my favorites the favorites window doesn't open. "Show all the favorites" and "add a new file" work though.Do I need another kind of manipulation with Tiger ?!
I have been through all the applications, including in the Utilities folder and they are the only ones that don't work.
I'm considering downgrading and performing a simple upgrade (but in that case, I might again have trouble with iTunes, no?)
tell me if my conclusions are right:
during the upgrading, somehow some files necessary for some applications were not transfered and when I want to open these apps the computer goes back to the original language when I first bought it (japanese).
I could still use them in japanese but it is not very confortable for me and I really would like to have the french or english version of the same app !
I hope someone will shed some light on this !

ok. One by one:
1- i'll try re-installing iPhoto and iMovie. But you did not tell me if it was enough to just bring the application to the trash or if I had to look somewhere else…
2- QT: there is no pkg in the /Library/receipts !
but there are many QT "things":
QTPlayer app in /applications/QTPlayer app.
QTUpdater in /system/library/QT (together with many components)
QTPlayer in /applications(mac OS 09) /QT/QTPlayer

does "alias" means that they are not really there ? what should I do ?
