Urgent: A Choice of Technology Question

Hi Guys,
I am facing this situation that is unique for me. I have to download objects from salesforce and save them on local disk, so that they can be uploaded again to new tables or as needed. Now for object serialization, I have to use XMLEncoder.
The problem is that there is data for hundreds of clients and total data for each client is well over 1MB. Plus, I have to select clients by name in my application when data is to be posted back in future. What path should I follow? Should I just save each client in a separate XML file or should I use an XML database? I think that XML database would be the right choice to save me all the data housekeeping, but I need an expert opinion.
Please give your explanation as to why you think I should prefer one choice over other. That would really help me make a rational choice.
Thanks for your time.

  • URGENT: Monitor choice for New G5s (Nov 2005)

Sorry bout the "Urgent" but I need to decide on following before purchasing new G5 (Quad or Dual-Core 2.3) and Apple Monitors only have 3 year warranty if purchased with the computer.
    SITUATION:
I plan to go with either the default NVidia Geforce 6600 or the NVidia 7800GT(+$350) * Both cards (PCI Express models) - only have DVI ports (1 single link, 1 dual).
--I am truly baffled at how this (DVI vs VGA) affects both features and screen image)
MY CONCERNS: (please consider these in your answers)
    * Text:I stare at text for the better part of the day so Sharp Text is VITAL.
    * Color: Good color (proper balance consistency & controls) but most important: Monitor to printer translation so a good color profile counts, (most of my final output via ID to local Phaser6250.)
    * Compatibility: ie will I be able to take advantage of advertised features via DVI
*Lastly: I don't give a hoot about gaming, DVD playback not a big concern. I want a monitor functions well for running computer applications. Stuff like USB ports and media readers nice but not deal breakers...
    SUMMARY OF ISSUES
In most ways, the HP & Dell models sound preferable (feature wise). BUT:
    * Will I have the same controls & adjustments (brightness, contrast etc) available for these, (specifically since I'll be connecting via a DVI port) THIS IS VITAL. (but..don't care about Portrait mode)
    * Will image/text look as good on a Mac as a PC?
    * I assume there will never be Mac drivers for either of these, spooked that this will limit functions and/or could cause compatibility issues in the future.
How would I get color profiles for these?
    MONITORS BEING CONSIDERED
As i can find no good advice on CRTs I've pretty much narrowed my choice to following 23" LCD's (all priced similarly $1200-1300):
Following info from misc sources (of varying in reliability) the Web, sources but specs correct.
    1) Apple HD Cinema 23":(often compared poorly to Dell, but users seem to love) 25.6 dot pitch
Pros: Can count on compatibility: Firewire ports, aluminum bevel
Cons: Color issues: I hear there's a pinkish tint around edges, and generrally uneven color across the screen., greenish tint in greys. If my printouts match the screen I can live with this. **DVI ONLY
    2) Dell 2405FPW: (a lotta buzz on the net, good reviews) 27 dotpitch
Pros: Better outputs: (DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video, component video), better contrast),
Tilt, turn, Raise. (not a deal breaker)
Cons: Compatibility?. I heard this screen runs too bright even with adjustment (at least on a Mac), large dot pitch, questionable support
    3) HP L2335: (editors choice MacWorld Jan 2006) .258 dot pitch
Pros: Better outputs: (DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video, component video), better contrast)
Programmable user modes (have this on my current monitor - really nice), Tilt, swivel, Raise.
Cons: Compatibility?. questionable support, (supposed to be pretty ugly, but don't about this.
    FINAL QUESTIONS:
Has anyone worked with 1 or more of these monitors ON a Mac via DVI? --comments?
Since there's no way to view PC Monitors under these circumstances...
    * Can anyone comment on what questions I'd need answered to determine compatibility/feature function ability (via Mac DVI)?
    * Am I being paranoid about my using PC Monitor concerns. (my greatest being, that if things poor out of box will get little to no help from manufacturers).
Sorry so long, trying to be clear, THANKS IN ADVANCE- Xandra

PMac Quicksilver, PBook G4 Titanium, iMacDV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

I recently purchased the 2405FPW in Canada for $900 CAD (in fact its still on sale) with free shipping. I can highly recommend it. It is certainly not too bright. I have zero dead pixels and am actually surprisingly impressed. Video playback was better than expected and reading Text is very easy at its optimal resolution of 1900x1200.
That being said, is 1900x1200 TOO sharp/small? The monitors performance does vary based on its resolution. The colour is also quite good. Not too oversaturated as with many LCD's (or washed out for that matter).
I suggest you familarize yourself with Colour Calibration Tool (go to Display Properties, Color Calibrate...)
The other big factor for me is the Component Video In that I am using to hook up a High Def signal (yes this is a capable HD TV). Don't kid yourself this is an excellent feature.
In regards to your concerns you can do ALOT of alteration of the LCD via the OSD (the on screen display). But you should make sure to setup ANY LCD via color calibration tool.
Images and text look better on a Mac than a PC in my opinion due to the nature of Quartz Extreme and Quartz font smoothing (your video cards will be excellent at utilizing these features).
In regards to drivers, NIETHER need it. You plug it in (I've used both) and the OS will automatically switch to the default resolution and the default color profile is installed (I tweaked the color profile a little via the color calibration tool...). Yes its true plug and play.
I've never used the HP but I own the Dell. I've tried the Apple. Personally, the Apple looks better physically (but you say you don't care) and it does have a smaller dot pitch (I couldn't notice a big diff and I saw them side be side). The Dell is brighter (you can turn it up or down to your preference) and has better contrast. I LOVE the component in on the dell and have a HD game system hooked up and it looks marvelous.
I also found the Dell more adjustable. Both the dell and the apple are excellent monitors and you can't go wrong. For me the addition of Component in for HD as well as a significant price difference (almost $800 CAD when taxes are added up, heck I could almost buy 2 dell for the price of 1 apple) made me buy the dell and so far I am very happy with it (although I now have to turn my head to game :D)

  • Old geezer with new technology question

I am old and I have an old cell phone.
It will make calls and receive calls.
I am thinking about venturing to some new technology... an iPhone maybe?
Wondering if it will do ONE THING that I might be wanting to do.
    With an iPhone... can you:
make a video/audio recording AND simultaneously, real time, upload it to... somewhere
as in... I have an iCloud account, maybe there?
    Thanks,
    James
P.S. Please make any answers at kindergarten level, and don't assume I know a bunch of terms or concepts, I probably don't.  Thanks.
P.P.S. If you need more information from me to answer/help, just ask and i will try to provide.

    Thank you, Novicii.
I don’t have Facebook or Twitter (and WON’T), so they’re out.
And don’t know about WiFi areas.
But if I have an iCloud account and (got) a cellular data plan (when I got my iPhone) then it sounds like I could do this.
    Only two questions:
    1-
    You talk about uploading “photos”.
I’m talking about uploading continuously running video as it is still recording.
Will it (progressively) upload the video (pari passu) WHILST the video is still in the process of recording?
Or would you need to END the video recording before it would SEND?
    2-
And the link you gave me (great link!)
Talks about PhotoStream vs. Shared PhotoStream and the requirements.
I’ve only got OSX 10.7.5 but it looks like that would suffice for (non-shared) PhotoStream, which would be fine for me.
    10.7.5?
    3-
But again, all I saw the link talking about was “Photos” (admit I haven't parsed my way through all there completely)
Does everything they say on that page you linked about photos apply to VIDEO?
    Thanks Novicii!

  • Java card technology question

    Hi all
Im new to the java card technology. I've downloaded and installed the java card kit and tested the demos on the virtual environment. I have the towitoko card reader, downloaded the cttwkw32.dll, but i dont know how to communicate with it.
Can pls anyone tell me what steps should i follow in order to be able to communicate with the reader? is there any IDE for building such applications (except for the eclipse and the jcop toolbox)?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Urgent help with quick translation questions

    Hello,
I am somewhat new to Java. I have a translation to hand in in a few hours (French to English). Argh! I have questions on how I worded some parts of the translation (and also if I understood it right). Could you, great developers, please take a look and see if what I wrote makes sense? I've put *** around the words I wasn't sure about. If it sounds strange or is just plain wrong, please let know. I also separated two terms with a slash, when I was in doubt of which one was the best.
    Many thanks in advance.
    1) Tips- Always ***derive*** the exceptions java.lang.Exception and java.lang.RuntimeException.
Since these exceptions have an excessively broad meaning, ***the calling layers will not know how to
distinguish the message sent from the other exceptions that may also be passed to them.***
    2) The use of the finally block does not require a catch block. Therefore, exceptions may be passed back to the
calling layers, while effectively freeing resources ***attributed*** locally
    3) TIPS- Declare the order for SQL ***statements/elements*** in the constant declaration section (private static final).
Although this recommendation slightly hinders reading, it can have a significant impact on performance. In fact, since
the layers of access to data are ***low level access***, their optimization may be readily felt from the user’s
    perspective.
    4) Use “inlining.”
Inlining is a technique used by the Java compiler. Whenever possible, during compilation, the compiler
copies the body of a method in place of its call, rather than executing a ***memory jump to the method***.
In the example below, the "inline" code will run twice as fast as the ***method call***
5)tips - ***Reset the references to large objects such as arrays to null.***
Null in Java represents a reference which has not been ***set/established.*** After using a variable with a
large size, it must be ***reassigned a null value.*** This allows the garbage collector to quickly ***recycle the
    memory allocated*** for the variable
    6) TIPS Limit the indexed access to arrays.
Access to an array element is costly in terms of performance because it is necessary to invoke a verification
that ***the index was not exceeded.***
    7) tips- Avoid the use of the “Double-Checked Locking” mechanism.
This code does not always work in a multi-threaded environment. The run-time behavior ***even depends on
compilers.*** Thus, use the following ***singleton implementation:***
    8) Presumably, this implementation is less efficient than the previous one, since it seems to perform ***a prior
initialization (as opposed to an initialization on demand)***. In fact, at runtime, the initialization block of a
(static) class is called when the keyword MonSingleton appears, whether there is a call to getInstance() or
not. However, since ***this is a singleton***, any occurrence of the keyword will be immediately followed by a
call to getInstance(). ***Prior or on demand initializations*** are therefore equivalent.
If, however, a more complex initialization must take place during the actual call to getInstance, ***a standard
synchronization mechanism may be implemented, subsequently:***
    9) Use the min and max values defined in the java.lang package classes that encapsulate the
    primitive numeric types.
To compare an attribute or variable of primitive type integer or real (byte, short, int, long, float or double) to
***an extreme value of this type***, use the predefined constants and not the values themselves.
    Vera

    1) Tips- Always ***derive*** the exceptions java.lang.Exception and java.lang.RuntimeException.***inherit from***
***the calling layers will not know how to
distinguish the message sent from the other exceptions that may also be passed to them.***That's OK.
while effectively freeing resources ***attributed*** locally***allocated*** locally.
    3) TIPS- Declare the order for SQL ***statements/elements*** in the constant declaration section (private static final).***statements***, but go back to the author. There is no such thing as a 'constant declaration section' in Java.
Although this recommendation slightly hinders reading, it can have a significant impact on performance. In fact, since
the layers of access to data are ***low level access***, their optimization may be readily felt from the user’s
perspective.Again refer to the author. This isn't true. It will make hardly any difference to the performance. It is more important from a style perspective.
    4) Use “inlining.”
Inlining is a technique used by the Java compiler. Whenever possible, during compilation, the compiler
copies the body of a method in place of its call, rather than executing a ***memory jump to the method***.
In the example below, the "inline" code will run twice as fast as the ***method call***Refer to the author. This entire paragraph is completely untrue. There is no such thing as 'inlining' in Java, or rather there is no way to obey the instruction given to 'use it'. The compiler will or won't inline of its own accord, nothing you can do about it.
5)tips - ***Reset the references to large objects such as arrays to null.***Correct, but refer to the author. This is generally considered bad practice, not good.
Null in Java represents a reference which has not been ***set/established.******Initialized***
After using a variable with a
large size, it must be ***reassigned a null value.*** This allows the garbage collector to quickly ***recycle the
memory allocated*** for the variableAgain refer author. Correct scoping of variables is a much better solution than this.
***the index was not exceeded.******the index was not out of range***
The run-time behavior ***even depends on compilers.***Probably a correct translation but the statement is incorrect. Refer to the author. It does not depend on the compiler. It depends on the version of the JVM specification that is being adhered to by the implementation.
Thus, use the following ***singleton implementation:***Correct.
it seems to perform ***a prior initialization (as opposed to an initialization on demand)***.I would change 'prior' to 'automatic pre-'.
    ***this is a singleton***That's OK.
***Prior or on demand initializations***Change 'prior' to 'automatic'.
    ***a standard
synchronization mechanism may be implemented, subsequently:***I think this is nonsense. I would need to see the entire paragraph.
***an extreme value of this type******this type's minimum or maximum values***
I would say your author is more in need of a technical reviewer than a translator at this stage. There are far too serious technical errors in this short sample for comfort. The text isn't publishable as is.

  • Hp Blades - flex10 technology questions

Hello, I have a few doubts regarding HP blades and Oracle VM. In particular:
    - HP BL460c G6 model comes with an embedded "flex10" network adapter.
If connected to a standard switch interconnect module (NOT to a VC interconnect module!), this adapter should be seen by the system as (2) standard 1 Gbit network cards.
Adding another flex10 adapter in an expansion slot should result in seeing (4) standard 1 Gbit NICs, on a "server point of view".
    The questions:
    - I'd like to know if anybody has tried this config with Oracle VM (embedded flex10 adapter + additional flex10 adapter + standard interconnect switch module), and if it is true that this is seen as 4 standard NICs...
    - Any troubles with NIC teaming/bonding with this config and Oracle VM?
    - Finally, a slightly different question, but given that we're here :-) anybody knows if the newest G7 blades with Opteron 61xx processor(s) are supported/certified for Oracle VM?
    Thanks!

i'm very familiar with the hp pdt, what i'm lacking of is the real equipment to test it out:
In theory, if you will put standard 1 Gbit Ethernet switches in the front end (e.g. GbE2C), the flex10 cards should be seen by the physical servers as if they were Broadcom 1Gbit NICs. Therefore, no special drivers should be needed. Everything should work right away.
    -->Yes, flexNICs are backward compatible.
With this config, each flex10 card will "provide" 2 "Broadcom" NICs. Therefore, if you have the embedded NC532i and if you add a mezzanine NC532m, you will end up seeing 4 standard 1 Gbit Broadcom NICs.
--> Yes, this is provided you put in non Flex10 VC
To see the 8 NICs, and to have the possibility of shaping the bandwidth allocation on each of them up to a total of 10 Gbits, you need to put 10 Gbit switches in the front end, e.g. ProCurve switches. In THIS case, the flex10 cards will be seen as 4 NICs on each card, for a total bandwidth of 10 GBits (and a total of 8 NICs if you have 2 cards). I don't know if you need special drivers in this case, but I guess so...
-->No, the only way for you to have 8 FlexNIC with a G6 is thru flex10 virtual connect ONLY. yes, there is a special driver for it, but i can;t seem to find it for OVM. Btw, Virtual Connect are not switches, this is a common misconception.
Please note that I haven't effectively tried a real configuration... This is just what I've been getting to know after speaking to HP people.
--> This is what i'm lacking as well. HP does not officially support OVM with flexNICs though.
Also, it looks like the G6 blades are going to be soon out of production (nothing official, but I've heard it should be around february). After that, only the BL460c G7 will be available (with flexfabric NICs, so it's going to change AGAIN).
-->G6 are still selling but will be replaced with G7 that comes with FlexFabric adapters (FCoE). nothing is going to change. if you place a G7 blade and pair it with flex10 virtual connect, you will still get the 8 flexNICs. if you were to place a G6 blade and pair it with flexFabric (FF) virtual connect you are still going to have 8 flexNICs. FCoE capability will only be available if u pair FF VC with FF CNA (converged network adapter)

  • Urgent but I think simple question

    Hello!
Actually I've got a Maxtor 80 gig ATA133 connected on my ATA133 socket on my mainboard, an MSI 875P Neo.
This disk is now divided into 2 NTFS partitions, with Win2000 Pro.
This disk is visible just because at the startup it loads the controller Fastrak 378 driver; this controller, as you know, manages the ATA133 channel, and the SerialATA channel, and also the RAID capabilities.
My hd - i read at the startup- is managed as a RAID 1+0 Stripe.
Is this the correct way to use this hard disk?
The urgent problem is that I've got to format a partition (by the way: how can I format the NTFS partition in which win2000 pro is installed?) and install WinXP. I don't need now the RAID capabilities, so I think I can let the controller driver away from my pc... But without that driver, my pc doesn't see the hd... just like I have no hd on my pc.
What's wrong? What should i do to fix this? Is RAID mode needed to use an ATA133 (in ATA133 mode, of course) hard disk?
Thanks a lot for your help, I'll really appreciate it! :-)
    Matteo

It would be better if you could stay in one thread to solve your issue. Thanks for your cooperation.

  • Generic platform/technology question

Hi, sorry to ask but I'm stuck...
I've been asked to develop an applcation and I'm stuck on what technologies to use.
I will have an Oracle database at the backend but need to find what front-end to use. Java desktop? ADF? JSF?
One thing I do know is that the company would prefer zero cost.
I'm looking at using JDeveloper to design the database and would prefer not to use Visual Studio 10 with ASP and ODT.
The application is for a small number of people to track audit checks on work carried out.
I've had a bit of a look at Apex but I need to run jobs behine the scenes to generate checks etc.
I'm by myself and have written applications in the past in MFC and a bit of JAVA, ASP etc.
I'm happy to learn new languages but need a pointer on a direction to start with.
I like Java but not hung up on going that direction.
Sorry if this is a bit wooly.

Oracle ADF is a powerful end-to-end framework that covers all the layers of the modern applications (e.g. data access components, business services, data bindings, controller, presentation layer). Oracle ADF is suitable for both small applications and large enterprise systems. However, Oracle ADF requires a considerable amount of Java & ADF knowledge and corresponding practical experience. It is not a framework you can learn in a week. Have in mind that you will need at least several weeks to learn and try the framework before starting development of real applications for a real customer.
One thing I do know is that the company would prefer zero cost.
Oracle ADF (incl. ADF Business Components, ADF Faces, ADF Bindings, etc.) is not free. It is free to develop ADF applications, but ADF needs runtime licenses when running in a production environment.
Oracle ADF licenses are included in the WebLogic Server licenses (so if your customer has got WebLogic licenses and you are going to implement an ADF Faces application deployed on these WebLogic servers, then no separate ADF licenses will be necessary). But if you are going to use a different application server (e.g. IBM WebSphere), then your customer will need separate Oracle ADF licenses. However, your application is going to be an Intranet application used by a small number of fixed users, so your customer may avoid purchasing expensive "processor" licences but it may need only a small number of cheap NUP licenses (Named User Plus licenses). If you are going to implement a desktop ADF application (e.g. ADF Swing application), then your customer will need a corresponding number of NUP (Named User Plus) licenses for Oracle ADF.

  • Urgent!!! A question about p6.7 stand alone

I had P6.7 stand alone installed and have used it for a while. Last week, I suddenly couldn't login. After I entered password and clicked Login, and when "loading data" came to 99%, error message popped up and task ended itself, not able to enter into Primaver interface.
I decided to reinstall. I didn't uninstall the existing one. I just run R8.2 set up and tried to upgrad based on the existing 6.7 version. During the installation, up until the step “Creating PM database.....might take a few minutes.......”, I waited for more than 2 hours but the message still there and nothing happened. I didn't think it was good and I ended the installation.
Next, I went to Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs, uninstalled "Oracle database" and "Primavera 6". I changed back to P6.7. During the installtion, it was unfortunately the same as before, up until the step “Creating PM database.....might take a few minutes.......”, I waited again for more than 2 hours, but the message still there and nothing happened. I ended the installation again. In addition, I found "Oracle database" and "Primavera 6" were in Start Menu and the directory I choosed during the installtion. However, in Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs, there was only Oracle Database, no Primaver 6.
And then, I uninstalled the Oracle Database from Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and tried to reinstall again. But I got the same bad luck. I repeated this process for a few times without success.
Who knows a SOLUTION? Much much appreciated.

Hello, well the Oracle Xe database is not the same that the Primavera database. If you already installed Oracle XE, go to Start menu --> Oracle XE --> Go to database homepage. Try to log in with "system" and the password that you configured in p6 installation. Go to Users, if you only have 1 user, that means that p6 database is not installed, and you need to created manually (probably windows configuration is blocking the .bat file)
to create the database manually check http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16688_01/Product_Manuals/adminguide.pdf , Section:Automatically Installing an Oracle Database and Loading Application Data, page 49
And once the database is created, you need to configure the alias (connection between p6 and the database) (click on ellipsis button, add, select your name and driver type, for database connection string use XE, type your public user (eg: pubuser) , finish and try to log into p6
    Best Regards!

  • Technology Question for Droid Razr M

I have a Droid Razr M.  Can I use it as a projector in a presentation?  If so, what do I need for accessories?

    hatluvr wrote:

"A Projector is designed to receive a video signal from some external  device-usually a DVD player, a Blu-Ray player, or a computer-and project  that signal onto a screen. It does this by displaying the image  represented in the video signal onto a small screen inside the projector  itself, which is then projected onto a screen using a bright light and a  lens. The lens is a piece of glass shaped in a very specific way  designed to take the small image and turn it into a dramatically larger  one."
If you mean that you want to display something from your phone out to another source, then you would NEED a projector to do that. You have a phone. You could get an HDMI cable to send the output to a projector, or I am sure there are apps that will do that also through bluetooth or wifi somehow.

  • Wireless Technology question

My experience with wireless devices is almost close to nil, and I was just wondering, is there anything special that has to be done in order for a wireless device just to connect and view a web page in the internet?
For example, let's say www.boo999.com is a web site that has no preliminary preparations for access by a wireless device, would any wireless device be able to view that page (however ugly it might look through the tiny wireless screen)? Or is the downloading of a MIDlet the only way?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can use MIDlets which are capable of connecting to server and downloading a HTML page. MIDlet is just like an applet, if you use applet to connect to a server and download a HTML file and display , it will display with all the HTML tags but you can write logic to parse all the HTML tag and format the display.
Most of the devices have built in micro browser applications that can be used to view a web page.

  • Simple Question Please URGENT

    Hello All,
I'm having a little problem in witting an SQL statement.
I'm sure there is a simple solution for it but its just not clicking with me!.
    Anywayz,
I'm trying to write a statement that in the FROM clause, there is a formula, and i would like to assign conditions to this formula in the WHERE Clause
    Ex:
    SELECT DateValue(FLD_AS_STRING) FROM Table1 WHERE ???
I want the statement to convert the FLD_AS_STRING field (which is in string format) to Date format, and in the same time i want to only view fields that it's FLD_AS_STRING is greater than today's date (after it is converted to Date)?
How can i do that in this statement?
    Thanks in advance,
    Best Regards

who do you mean "we"?Forum members that are quite fed up with people declaring their matters (more) urgent then other people's questions. I'm also one of them.
I just wanted to grab people's attention for helpA simple thread with an appropriate subject line that describes the problem in short and a message that includes enough information to develop a solution for said problem would suffice.
in the same time, it IS urgent, because my work is
based on the solution for this issue...So what about everybody's else work? Not as important as your task?
BTW, i dont see how rude that could be, could you plz
explain!?Just imagine if everyone that wants to grab attention in this forums uses urgent in the subject line. Do you really consider that the way to go?

  • Please help me choose a technology to connect !

Hi, I am a MSc (Software Development) student from University of Huddersfield, UK. I have to submit a final year project proposal by the end of July.
My real client is a pharmaceutical company with many offices in many cities. They maintain a central database in one city. The need is to develop a means of accessing this database via a Java technology over the Internet as well as Intranet. The use of applets and web pages is discouraged by the non-technical company advisors. I wonder what can be the solution ?? Please guide me in the right direction and kindly point a right Java technology to be used in a Java Application for this need.
    The relevant detail is:
1). Back end Database is in ORACLE.
2). Front END is supposed to be an Internet + Intranet enabled Application.
3). The choice of technologies to be considered:
RMI ??? (may be a rediculous question)
    EJ Beans ??
    Servelets ??
What should I think of ?? Please help me out as the time to decide is slipping out of my hands.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

    The use of applets
and web pages is discouraged by the non-technical
company advisors. I wonder what can be the solution ??You sure? That pretty much rules out any normal 'web' solution. Maybe they want a web solution which does not use applets, but other web technologies are ok.
    If not...
The only thing left is a client-server application. Every client box will have to have the client application installed.
This means that you now have to implement not only a client solution but you will also have to create an install and handle security yourself.
The security problems are rather large. The server will have to have a port which is open to the internet. Transmissions will have to use encryption just to keep the kiddie-hackers out.

    Hi,
First (non-technical people - like overpaid business managers) don't usually have a clue what they are talking about.
So, first, you need to make a case fro using simple well-known technology eg a tomcat server and the new buzz-word is SOAP (well it's not that new, but then the internet is getting old too).
Three web sites in 1996 (I quote Bill Clinton in the Dimbly lectures), maybe it was four!
On to SOAP, do a google/msn search on the subject.
It is a way of running a thin client/ server operation, passing all data as text or maybe xml (another buzzword?) through good old html.
You can therefore bypass firewalls with any data sent, there is not a need for expensive pcs (front-end users machines). The server does all the processing and returns a response as either a text response, an xml response, or just maybe a href link to a resource.
Just some ideas to think about.
    Hope this helps
    best
