US Verizon iPhone 4 - visiting Japan help needed to avoid roaming

hi
I've got an original Verizon iPhone 4 running iOS 5 and will be going to Japan. I want to avoid roaming charges but I would like to be able to use my apps on wifi.
After talking to Verizon, it sounds like if I break down and update to iOS 7, then I can put my phone on "Do not Disturb" and I won't get calls or texts, but can use wifi.
Does this sound right? Or should I just plan to turn my phone off before leaving the US and turn it back on only upon my return?
Thanks

No you CAN'T use that AT&T sim card for a Verizon phone.
You have a Verizon iPhone 4, which is a CDMA phone only and does NOT come with a sim card tray.  It was the Verizon iPhone 4s and above that came with the sim card tray to be used for international travel only.  There is nowhere for you put a sim card in a Verizon iPhone 4, so you can't do that.
If you want to be able to do that and use local sim cards, then you will have to buy a new Verizon phone such as an iPhone 5s that comes with a sim card tray that is unlocked for international use, but you CANNOT use it in a Verizon iPhone 4 because there is no sim card tray.

  • I bought iphone while visiting Japan, now in pakistan its not geting signals and can't connect to service provider

I have got Iphone 4, now when i am back in pakistan. Its not working, cant connect to the service provider. Dosn't accepts the sim.

    I would disagree to it.
iPhones sold in Japan are locked to carriers. Apple does not sell unlocked and contract free iPhones in Japan.

  • Urgent Iphone with new laptop help needed!

ok so i did a fresh reinstall of leopard on my macbook without thinking about syncing my iphone.
now whenever i plug my iphone into my laptop it thinks its a camera and opens image capture and asks me what photos i want to download off it. It wont show up on the desktop or in itunes.
I have all the music, apps etc backed up on my machine. i do not however have backups of my contacts!
i have a backup of the iphone in itunes, but i cant get to a point of restoring the phone to the back up i have, as plugging it in does nothing.
there is a setting to erase all content and settings on the iphone, will this render it as if i had just bought it out of the shop, meaning i can resync with my 'new' laptop?
    HELP!

I managed to fix it myself in the end, with a slight work around. once i had reinstalled leopard, i noticed a utility called migration assistant. I used that to transfer my old user account off my time machine and restore all the settings etc. now my iphone syncs with my laptop again. hoorah!
Interestingly, i tried the migration assistant when installing leopard (the whole 'setting up your computer' process) but it refused to do anything. I would tell it what to restore from time machine, it would accept, and then sit there with an empty progress bar that did not move all night. And i mean all night!

  • Mixed the iPhone & iPod cables up - help needed

I've been charging up my phone via the computer, and I now find I've mixed the USB cables from iPhone & iPod. Visually, there are slight differences between the two:
cable 1: connector end is slightly larger, and the USB end has both Apple & USB logos
cable 2: connector end is smaller, and USB end only has USB logo
Which cable is the one that came with the iPhone?
Functionally, are they the same - so I can safely use either one to charge up the iPhone.
    Thx!

The last difference, the iphone cable does not have a locking dock connctor & will not have the small releases on the sides like the ipod cable will.

  • Syncing iphone on new computer - help needed please

    Hi Everyone
I am stuck on a problem I have been trying to fix for a few hours with no luck after searching the community forums.
Last week we bough a new PC and set up iTunes one the new PC transfering the iTunes library successfully from the old PC to the new one.
All songs came across and appears to be working OK and iTunes is now looking at the correct library.
Tonight my son connected his iPhone to the PC to add songs.  Problem is it wouldn't let him add any songs.
Went into his device and checked the 'Manually Manage Music' and when I went to 'Apply' I got a message saying that this phone was not sync with this PC but with another library, which I assume is the library from the old PC, which I transferred.
The message said that if I sync everything will be deleted and updated from the new library.
If I do this does it mean that ALL his songs will deleted?
There are about 1000 songs on the iPhone and he doesn't want to have to manually add them all again.
So, what will happen if I do select Sync?  Will it delete his songs and he will have to reload?
Or will it delete the songs and replace them with the songs new library that are already on his iPhone?
    Does that make sense?

"Went into his device and checked the 'Manually Manage Music' and when I went to 'Apply' I got a message saying that this phone was not sync with this PC but with another library, which I assume is the library from the old PC, which I transferred."
This is correct. Iphone will sync or maually manage with one and only one computer ar a time.  Sycning or manually managing with another will indeed erase teh current content and replace with the selected content from the new computer.
If you have moved everything from the old computer to the new one, then hes should be able to sync everything right back to the iphone from the computer.

  • Help need in Avoiding Loop

    Hi,
    My table and data:
    Create table Sample(Empid int primary key identity(1,1),EmpName varchar(50),Empsalary money,EmpDesignation varchar(30));
    insert into Sample values('Jhon',8000,'Manager'),
    ('Smith',6000,'Lead'),
    ('Samuel',4000,'AccountExecutive'),
    ('Simson',4000,'AccountSpecialist'),
    ('Eric',22000,'Director'),

    Expected Result
    select 'EmpName','Jhon','Smith','Samuel','Simson','Eric','Jonathan' union all
    select 'Salary','8000','6000','4000','4000','22000','12000' union all
    select 'Designation','Manager','Lead','AccountExecutive','AccountSpecialist','Director','SeniorManager'
Is it possible to do without using loop? can anyone please give me some sample query to achieve. Also
I have 2k * 1000 reocords in my table. Is it possible to bring the data based on by passing the page size.

  • Can I use a Verizon iPhone 5S with a Japanese au SIM?

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use a Verizon iPhone 5S on Japan's au with an au SIM card???
(Verizon iPhone 5S comes factory unlocked and freely accepts GSM nano SIMs from other US carriers. This question is specifically for people with firsthand knowledge of American phones working on Japanese networks with Japanese SIM cards.)
I'll be living in Japan for just 7 more months, so it doesn't make sense to buy an impossible-to-unlock Japanese iPhone now. I'll be back on Verizon when I move back to the States, so if I can use an American Verizon phone on au, I would love to buy one right now while I'm home in Hawaii for the holidays.

You can't. Doing so is not supported.

  • Can I turn off GSM radio of my Verizon iPhone 5?

So My Verizon iPhone 5 runs on the CDMA network, but it also has GSM unlocked capabilities.
I know that it comes with a Verizon SIM for roaming internationally, which I'm not interested.
I have an international sim from my home country, which I use when I go home. It works perfectly. When I'm back to the US, I take it off and I'm back to CDMA on Verizon.
My question is - is there a way to eliminate this SIM switching steps? I mean, when I'm in the US, I'd like to turn OFF the GSM radio so I use Verizon's CDMA. But when I travel, I'd like to turn it ON to activate the SIM card and use the GSM. Right now, if I have the SIM card inside the iPhone 5 when I'm in the US it will overide my CDMA signal and will pick the GSM signal (in roaming from my home country). I have to take it off everytime I'm back in the US, which it's not nice.
Any chance this is possible? Any ideas?
    Thanks.

To expand on what Tim said, the iPhone 5, to work on Verizon's network requires that the Verizon 4G LTE SIM be installed in the phone. The SIM that came in your Verizon iPhone 5 is not a GSM SIM for roaming internationally.
The Verizon iPhone 4S comes with a Vodafone GSM SIM for international roaming. The SIM slot is not required on the 4S for Verizon's 3G CDMA network.

Absolutely not true. There is no difference, spec wise, between the iPhone sold in Japan & the GSM iPhone sold everywhere else. iPhones in Japan use UMTS 2100.

  • IPhone 5 and Verizon customer Service Nightmare Please help!

I need help with Verizon customer service. I would like to know if I am being unreasonable. Here is my story. I ordered an iPhone 5 from apple to add to my Verizon account. This will be my fourth line of service with Verizon. I spend over 200 dollars a month with Verizon. I ordered the iPhone on the first day it was available to order. I received my iPhone on Tuesday 9/25/12. The nightmare begins. I call Verizon customer service to activate service. I get bounced from department to department because they are unable to activate my phone. This goes on for about an hour. I then get to a nice young lady that was very friendly and worked hard to try to help me. We spend for hours on the phone speaking to all of her different departments and even calling apple care and apple directly. The problem is Verizon set my new line of service to start in the middle of October. After about 4-5 hours on hold with customer service I am told they can't activate my new phone until the middle of October because when the order was placed they set up my activation date wrong. They went on to tell me they could do nothing more and transferred me to apple as they said only apple can fix the problem. I spend the next two hours on the phone with apple. Apple class all their tech support and calls Verizon back and explains my phone is a working phone and Verizon is the one providing the service so this is definitely a Verizon issue. I am advised by apple that I need to call Verizon back to fix. At this point Verizon is closed as I have been on hold with reps past closing time. I call back to Verizon and get a really helpful customer service rep the next day. Spend two hours on hold with him and he gets my service turned on. He states they should have been able to help me with this yesterday and apologized to me. He advised I would have to call back the next day to change my phone numbers around. Total time invested today 2 hours. Total time invested so far over 8 hours. I call back the next day to get my numbers moved around. Takes about an hour. When we are done I ask if I can get a credit on my next bill for having to spend over 8 hours on the phone to fix Verizon's mistake. I am transferred to a very condescending manager who laughs at me and tells me in essence they don't care about my time. He offers me one day of service credit. I advise him this is unacceptable. He gives me an analogy that this is like me getting my electric turned off for not paying and then wanting a credit for the time it took to turn back on. He even laughed at me on the phone and told me he wasn't going to do anything. When I asked to speak to a higher up manager I was told no. My question is who do I advise to get this rectified, and is it unreasonable to expect a credit when I spent over 8 hours on the phone with Verizon to correct their mistake?  Pleas help!

Yes, don't feel it is as black&white as other posters here, but it is impractical.
What is the value of your time for example?  If you are not self-employed, were you still being paid during these 8 hours.  A court would consider actual economic loss, did you lose money during these 8 hours?   And do you/your employer pay customers in similar situations?  In my experience, you get credit based on the service (e.g. the 1 day credit) rather than being paid for your time.
And on the flip side, if I call up Verizon complaining that my phone doesn't work, and it turns out that I had forgot to charge it, do you want to be billed for the rep's time when it was your mistake?  (Of course, wireline DOES do this, if Verizon dispatches a repair tech and the fault is inside your house etc (without a wiring contract) you do get charged)
Certainly the one day credit is the minimum they should provide.  As others have said, your real recourse is to return the phone.

  • Help with Straight Talk on old Verizon Iphone 4S Data Apn

So I have had an old Iphone 4s that once worked on Verizon but I had been using it for over a year as just an IPOD basically with a GPS for Golf app and Music etc.  I saw posts about this bring your phone to Walmart and go onto Straight Talk for $45 a month for everything.  Sounded good so figured I would try.  I purchased a micro Sim for Straight Talk that said it was "compatible with T-Mobile" I didn't know what that meant but figured it was Straight talk and it was a Micro Sim which it didn't look like I could get from Walmart.  I got the Sim and unlocked my old Verizon Iphone.  I was able to get the Phone working, went through many pains to get Web working but at this point I still can't get Apps that need to connect to the internet to work.  Has anyone else figured this out?  So again I can use the Phone, I can Text so I have MMS, I can surf with Safari and Maps works without Wifi but if I want to use BofA app or Ebay app that has to use data plan It says it cannot connect to the internet or some message saying it times out.  Any idea what more I need to get my full IPhone working on Straight Talk.  Also even though I'm on Straight Talk up in the left corner it says T-Mobile, is it supposed to?  Not new to Apple but definitely new to straight talk and or any other carriers other than verizon (which everything worked for but was too expensive!!).  Thanks for anyone that can help.

That means you hacked the phone.

  • Help, AT&T iphone3 to VERIZON iphone..?

How can i transfer an old AT&T Iphone 3 to a VERIZON Iphone.. THanks this would help alot as my old phones broke...

In short.. You can't. The iphone 3 is a GSM phone and does not have a CDMA 'bit'. Verizon is a CDMA carrier.
You will need to buy a phone specifically for Verizon as they don't usually let you bring your own device for them.
