I don't know if any of you noticed this,

Oracle is announcing that they are looking
for "business software users" in the Bay

I am a Product Manager in the Platform group, located in Burlington MA, responsible for usability especially of GUI interfaces, for example, the BEA Installer, the Configuration Wizard, etc.
I am recruiting test subjects to examine some new tools under development in WebLogic Platform 9.0. Each test session takes about an hour. Your input will materially improve GA release quality.

Export UI usability bugs

I'm in Windows 8, Lightroom 4.3
I have a set of User Preset exports.
It took me a long time to figure out why the changes that I was making to the presets weren't working and that if I wanted any changes to stick I would have to "Add" and create them under a new name and that there is no editing despite there being dropdowns. I was expecting that after a preset had been made, I could make an edit and then click the export or make an edit and then move to another user preset and the changes I'd made would save. If you want to keep that there should be no editing, it would have been more obvious if all the fields had been non-editable or there had been some "override" checkbox.
As long as we're on the subject. The selected item on the left loses focus once you start editing and there is no title at the top of the edit form, so you can't tell the context of the edits you are making when you are making them.
Perhaps this screen should go through some more usability testing.

Clearly the UI allowed you to form a mistaken impression of how these presets operate (and there may be some room for improvement there).
In certain other contexts within LR, such as when you are setting up a watermark, that dialog's purpose is the creation and management of presets. In these cases, the dialog shows the name of the preset you are currently working on, and adds the word (edited) to show when you have made alterations to the settings, which have not yet been saved. However, these dialogs do nothing else apart from manage presets.
The more usual way that presets work in LR, is that you work manually - with recalling presets is a purely optional aid. The Export dialog's purpose is the exporting of images, and no matter how you have set things and then changed your mind and set them differently, all that truly counts here is: what were the final settings when you clicked Export. These "last used" settings ARE remembered for the next time.
In this kind of context, whether the settings you have made are worth saving into a preset is entirely up to you - just as the recording of Develop settings into a Develop preset is entirely up to the user to initiate. There would be no particular benefit if as you altered images in Develop, you were continually being prompted that the individual adjustments of your current image were not saved into a preset. Only at specific moments and as a deliberate matter, will the user wish to make (or update) such a preset. LR cannot know which preset would be most suitable to update, or whether a new one is required, or not, once the user has started changing things around.
Similarly, some aspects of Export are of the nature that one might wish to update into a preset, and others - such as, the custom description in a destination subfolder for one individual import, or a particular set of keywords belonging to this particular batch of images - are inappropriate to be saved into a preset. Or the user may have a momentary requirement which will never happen again. LR cannot know.
So the way Presets work in these kinds of dialog, is the same as in Develop: when you click on the name of a Preset it OVERRIDES the current settings of the dialog so as to recall what was earlier saved. The occasion for saving a Preset is when you think: "these settings will probably be useful on future occasions". The occasion for recalling a Preset is when you think: "these current settings are not what I want, at this moment - I want those other settings instead." These two occasions are quite distinct.
LR cannot know what is in the user's mind: have the settings been changed because the user is planning to alter some presets, or is the user - as is much more typical - simply individualising the export of some images as a routine matter?

Adobe is currently doing a number of usability tests for various products.We're looking for participants for a brief (~1 hour) online work observation and interview. Compensation will be a $100 Amazon gift card.
The study I'm working on involves users who are in the beginning/novice stages of learning InDesign. I'll ask participants to perform several tasks related to page numbering. The study will be conducted over the telephone and Adobe Connect (software for screen sharing).
For the study, participants must meet the following criteria:
- some experience with InDesign CS4
- have any version of Creative Suite 4 or InDesign CS4 installed on a computer that can be connected to the Internet
- ability and willingness to install and use Acrobat Connect on the same computer as the above software
- a 90-minute block of free time between 10:00 and 16:00 Pacific Time (GMT-8) on a weekday August 5-14.

Ios 7 : poor quality - usability and readability

As an project manager who helped to include in projects at an international level usability testing and as a major Project manager who included iterative usability design, testing and feedback in this project, I am sad to say that I am VERY disappointed with the 'so-called' NEW design of is ios7. I find the typography, design and colour scheme very poor from a usability and readability point of view and believe that ios6 design was, and is, much easier to READ and LESS TIRING on the eyes I would like to have an option of moving my ipad mini BACK TO iso6 (PLEASSSSSE...).
I have decided that our iPhones will remain on iOS 6 and I will NOT upgrade to OSX Mavrick. Moreover and consequently,I will NOT BUY any new versions of the iphones, ipads, or MAC computers that already have preinstalled ios7 !! {At least until APPLE comes back to decent designs, or at least gives users a design choice !}
The whole situation has been aggravated by the fact that when I upgraded to Pages 2.0 on the ipad mini, I discovered, to my HORROR, that Pages 2.O and the ios6 versions of PAGES nor the OSX10.8 versions of PAGES are not compatible. That is,I could no longer synchronize with my ios6 versions of pages nor with OSX10.8 (EVEN MICROSOFT DOES NOT MAKE THIS TYPE OF ERROR !!!).
I tried deleting Pages on the ipad mini {hoping that the ios6 version of pages would be recovered from my computer back-up, only to discover that Pages 2.0 (that I do not want) had reinstalled on the ipad mini.
To use PAGES with icloud on the ipad mini, APPLE wants me to upgrade to Mavrick (on my THREE Apple computers) and ios7 on my iPhones: this I do not want to do.
So, I will just be obligued to STOP using PAGEs and find another software program instead.
I require: more readable ios7 software and programs like contacts, calander, etc. Please do not modify ibooks original design !!
I require also : backward compatible PAGES (between ios7 and 6) buut preferably to switch back to ios6 as well as moving back a version on PAGES to the ios6 version. (For your infomration, there are many forums complaining about the design of ios7 ).
THIS FEEDBACK HAS BEEN SENT TO APPLE SUPPORT !

Questions on the ODT Tool enhancements

First of, great job on the ODT. It installed no problem and I like the new query window and the ability to run functions and procdures with test params. A couple of questions on the future of the product:
Are you guys going to be adding more functionality to the query window making it more like SQL*Plus?
Also is the an expected time frame for the PL/SQL Debugger and the .Net/CLR Extensions to the database?
Will there be sessions on the .Net/CLR extension at the upcoming Openworld?

Hard Drive problems / unable to Zero out Data etc.

Hallo.
Here is the problem: I have several WD Raptor Hard drives 74 GB working without problems. One of them is my system drive , others are used as Sample libraries HD or HD for recorded audio (I have Firmtek SATA card so I can use more SATA disks...). This summer I bougt new WD Raptor ADFD 150 GB drive to expand my storage for Audio Data... But I encountered a few problems like when I tried to copy a folder from this HD to another and this folder was quite big (15 GB or more) , it never get copied completly and the copiyng freezed in the middle or alike. So I had to move subfolders of this "big" folder manually... Also when I backupped Data from this drive to another with Apple Backup 3 it SOMETIMES did not backup and freezed. This happened in case of creating new backup file to new location, not when backupped to location with already existing backup file.
I tested the drive with the OSX Disk Utility (Verify Disk) and it said it was OK. Than I tested it with Tech Tool Pro 4 (Surface Scan) and it found a few ( two, sometimes three) bad sectors. Sometimes TecToolPro also freezed and I had to Force Quit it or shut down my Mac by pressing the Power button. So I moved the data away from this disk and tried to Erase it (Zero Out Data) with Disk Utility. Disk Utility started and reported that it will take 27 minutes. But after a few minutes it freezed and did not finish eerasingúzeroing the disk (I let it for whole night...). And Disk utility freezed so I had to Force Quit it. I tried it many times without success. Disk utility only could Erase it or create new partition but never Zero Out Data. Than I tried to Zero Out this disk in SoftRaid utility (even this disk was not in SoftRAID or any RAID setup) and it worked. But after I Scanned it's surface in Tech Tool Pro again, it found the bad sectors again...
So I took the disk to my computer dealer and he gave me new one - the same WD Raptor ADFD 150 model. I installed it (in lower bay inside my G5) , initialized in Disk Utility and than I did run the Surface Scan test in Tech Tool Pro. I could see the number of block that were tested increase for a while but than it stopped for a few minutes (10 or more ) and after a while it reported that it found 39 bad sectors! Wow! Fresh new Hard Drive! So again I tried the whole process: to Zero Out this new disk in Disk Utility and Disk Utility freezed. But SoftRaid utility Zeroed this disk successfully - but than after this procedure TechToolPro reported that 1 bad sector was found... I need to say that the Surface Scan test in Tech Tool Pro never got finished (only once when I let it work for about 6 hours) as it reported about bad block(s) after a few minutes or it freezed after a few minutes...
SO I took this new disk and installed it to a PC I have and I tested it with Western Digital Datalifeguard diagnostic utility (from Floppy disk). All tests were fine. It also wrote Zeroes to whole disk without problems. Fine. I reinstalled the disk back to my Mac and even before I initialized it in Disk Utility I tried to Scan it's Surface in Tech tool Pro. After a fef minutes it probably freezed , as it is scanning Block 19744512 for ever now - and it found three bad sectors already...
So what do you think about my situation? Shall I trust the Western Digital diagnostic utility (but on a PC) or should I visit my dealer again?

Something to try:
Open Disk Utility (Applications > Disk Utility)
Select your external HD on the left side of the Disk Utility window
Check the partition map scheme, near the bottom of the Disk Utility window
If it is not GUID (assuming you have an Intel iMac), consider repartitioning your HD to GUID. The Windows partition scheme on many external HDs. FAT 32, often has problems accepting large data transfers from Mac-partitioned hard drives.

One of the frequencies on Verizon FIOS TV does not work, and I can't get certain HD channels

So I've had two techs out to check the box outside my house where the wire comes in from the pole. The problem is I cannot get HD TBS, TNT, Fox Sports 1, Comedy Central and many other channels. These channels come in over the frequency that kicks out a fault (I saw when the 2nd tech came in and hooked my coax from the box outside my house directly into the tester)
The tech confirmed it was not coax in my house, but connections outside. he changed those connections and then all of a sudden it worked.
Two days later, not working again.
Verizon is incapable of figuring this out or setting me up with an appointment that is not in the middle of the work week at 2pm (i've already taken two days off from work to try and get this fixed...shall I just take a week long vacation and devote it to them?)
Anybody ever run into this and figured out a way to fix it yourself, since Verizon hasn't a clue?

Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.
Please go to your profile page for the forum, and look in the middle, right at the top where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
Under “My Support Cases” you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. This should be checked on a frequent basis as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions.
To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Open that and choose "subscribe".

Two resource groups one on each node.

Hi I am setting up a sun cluster with two nodes and storage.
I want to run oracle and weblogic.
I dont want to run both on the same server as the load matters and there are two boxes which can be used.
I am planning to setup two resource groups with logical hosts one on each box and buind oracle to one and weblogic to second logical host on the other box.
Now my requirement is,,
I want first box to be primary for oracle resource group and second box to be primary for weblogic resource group.
Can you please tell me how to configure different resource groupes to start on different boxes?

Hi, This document talks about bonding the resources in different ways. But doesnot suggest setting dependency between resources in different resource groups.
To make it little more clear.
I have box1 and box2 as nodes of cluster.
the resources are distrebuted as follows.
-----Box 1-------------------------Box2-------
resourcegroup1--------Resourcegroup2
logicalresource1-------logicalresource2
Weblogicresource-----Oracleresource
I will configure the resources to start on different nodes on startup by providing node list in different sequence for each resource group.
But I want to set the dependency here..the "WeblogicResource" should not start before "Oracleresource".
Can I straightaway set the dependency as we do for resources in same group or is there any other method to do this?
Since I donot have a ready/usable test cluster I am unable to try it before posting the question.
Please let me know the possible solution for this.

Installation problems with Windows

Hi,
I have the windows 7 beta and have been trying to reinstall it on my boot camp partition, however the installation continually reports a corrupt CD. I know that the CD is not corrupt because i have successfully installed Win7 beta on a boot camp drive before and on other computers. I have even tried on VMware and had the same error. The things that strikes me the oddest problem is that it always has the error at the same point of the installation e.g. 97% of expanding files. I have also tried installing a working Vista OS on boot camp and WMware and still had the same error. This leads me to believe a problem with the iMac's SuperDrive. I have run tests using tech tool pro and drive genius and had no anomalies. Any further steps to diagnose or a solution would be helpful, thank you.

I don't know about using Windows 7 Beta with Boot Camp. You may want to post that question in the category for Boot Camp.

However, I have messed around with using Windows 7 Beta under VMware Fusion. It works, with some graphical anomalies when the virtual machine is starting up. When I install a new OS into a VMware Fusion virtual machine, I always use the option to install from a disk image file, instead of a physical disc. That would avoid any issues you have there with your physical disc.
To do so, click the New button and then +Continue without disk+. Then +Use operating system disk image file+ and select the disk image file. In your case, that would be the Window 7 Beta .iso file that you downloaded. I told the VMware Fusion I was installing Windows Vista.
(Incidentally, I am using the 64-bit version. If your iMac is Core 2 Duo, you can. Don't know if that you make a difference in the Beta working or not working.)
To test the drive itself, you may want to start up from your Mac OS X installation disc and get to the Installer. From there, you can try running Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. While you are there in Disk Utility booted off another system, you might as well run a +Repair Disk+ in your startup volume. Then restart normally and try playing a DVD movie. If everything works, the optical drive is probably OK.
