USB audio dropout

I've been listening to audio on standalone DAC/Amp/Speaker via USB of iMac. After upgrade to Yosemite, this audio very often drops out, sometime a fraction of a second, other time almost a second or two. I had not noticed this drop outs before Yosemite.  It usually happens when Safari is trying to load a new page, Photoshop is trying to open a file, etc. In other words, it happens when the processor seems to be working heavier.  I have asked a few of my friends in audio field to confirm this is not only my issue.
Any work around?  Set-up adjustment to prevent/lesson this?  Not using Safari, Photoshop, etc. is obviously not a workaround.
Thanks.

I had similar issues, but I've since resolved them. The cause was some incompatible software that I hadn't upgraded yet. The biggest culprit was a program called SteerMouse which allows you to map input buttons on mice that don't have Mac drivers. Everytime I pressed a mapped button (other than the normal buttons that always work), my audio would cut out and if I pressed any of those buttons rapidly, my DAC input would die and I'd have to turn it off and back on again.
I just installed the latest version of Steermouse and everything is back to normal again.
I also previously had problems when switching Spaces and my DAC would cut out during the screen swap. That seems to have gone away. It may have been related to another third party piece of software, but I don't know. I've upgraded a lot of stuff in the past few months and I can't say which ones improved my issues since I upgraded so many.

  • Usb audio drop-out and problems on 2010 Mac Mini

Hello!  I recently purchased an Apogee Symphony USB audio interface for my Mac mini.  I have been trying for over a month to get it fully functional without having any dropouts.  The interface runs fine for about 15-20 minutes before I hear static (using my DAW, using iTunes, streaming movies on Netflix, etc).  Sometimes the DAW (reaper to be specific) can't play back because the computer lost the connection to the USB Audio interface.  I know this because I launch Audio Midi setup and it does not recognize the Apogee Symphony interface.  I restart the interface and it works fine.  There is intermittent loss at times, inconsistent latency, etc.  I have worked with Apogee support and we've tried everything - newest drivers, firmware update, etc.  I used to run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and had the same issues; I upgraded to 10.7.5 but had major kernel panics due to the display (or something, couldn't quite figure it out) but I reverted to 10.7.4 and everything runs smoothly... except the audio interface.
This led me to doing some research online and I think the problem is with USB audio dropouts.  I've tried disabling Bluetooth, Airport, not putting my HD to sleep, etc and still has the same issues.  I've tried two different USB ports:  the one closest to the display and the the one next-to-last.
My question is:  what causes the USB audio dropouts and is there a fix for it??

This happened a bunch of times; I only copied the main gist of the error message:

  • [SOLVED] Audio dropouts with USB sound card

Hi! Recently I bought an external USB sound card (Music Fidelity V-DAC). If I plug in the USB cable the sound device is recognized by Phonon in KDE4 (kdemod).
If I play an audio file in Amarok (or VLC) the audio is indeed redirected to the USB sound card and played correctly. However, if I use my USB mouse, or USB keyboard dropouts are occurring in the audio signal. It seems that other USB devices are interfering with my USB sound card.
    More details:
Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.33 and kdemod 4. Phonon backend is Xine. I also tried gstreamer, but this crashes Amarok/

I also tried an Ubuntu (9.10) live CD. Using ALSA or Pulseaudio a clean audio signal without dropouts is produced.

Thanks for your suggestion. I added the following line to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf file:
    options snd-usb-audio enable_msi=1
After a reboot the problem still persists. I also tried another suggestion from this forum:
    options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1
This doesn't work either. I tried to change settings in /etc/security/limits.conf, which looks like this:
    @audio - rtprio 99
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 250000
The USB sound card doesn't share a IRQ with another USB devices, as can be seen here:

  • Audio Dropout Adobe premiere pro cc(2014) "adobe player"

I'm having the following problems with my adobe premiere pr cc 2014. I'm in the middle of a big documentary for Dutch Television. Because of the really buggy adobe premiere I can't work. The director gets frustrated and we can't work fast. I need to restart frequently but still the problem persist. Whenever I hit the space button to play I get audio dropouts and the software freezes and doesn't work well.
-Audio dropouts, they happen randomly and quite often. It happens on a relatively powerful macbook pro r (2.7 ghz i7, 16gb ram, ssd hard drive, usb 3.0 external hd.
    - Bins take ages to load with thumbnails. Instead we see the grey square. It keeps on happening throughout the editing session.
    - Multicam, when playing timeline, sometimes it doesn't stop when prompted and it keeps on playing for a random amount of time.
I really need help. I can't seem to find the previous version of adobe anymore. Can I please have the previous version and can you convert my current project to work with the previous version.  Help me please,  Help me please!!, Adobe help. Help your client!Mitch W@

Hey Mitch, Thanx for your reply.
I don't it's false. The reason for that is whenever I get that "audio dropout" event, adobe reacts really slow and I can't edit fluently.
I've been busy the whole day trying to figure out what the problem is. I contacted adobe support and the remotely accessed my computer and see for themselves.
We opened the activity monitor to see what's happening. Monitoring system memory revealed something interesting. The free memory dropped low after working for 20 minutes. when the "swap used" reached 5gb I got an "audio dropped" event. So we purged the memory with the terminal application.
I restarted my computer and reopened Adobe premiere pro CC and started editing. After a few minutes it gave me an audio drop event again. Whenever I get them, premiere reacts slowly.

  • External display at 1920x1200 causing audio dropouts

I've got my Macbook hooked up to a Samsung Syncmaster 245B+ 24" monitor running at 1920x1200 with the Macbook in clamshell mode, I bought the monitor a couple of weeks ago and ever since I've been having problems with audio dropouts, both with the onboard soundcard and my external Presonus Firefox Firewire audio interface.
It seems the CPU is being overloaded at random, usually when there is some kind of graphical happening in a web browser for example. If I load up a page with a lot of graphical elements on it, sometimes the audio cuts out for a few seconds and then comes back, even then it can come back distorted. I can usually force these dropouts by briskly resizing the browser window, which makes the CPU usage level increase somewhat and thus the audio cuts out.
I first of all put this down to the Macbook not being able to display at this resolution sufficiently, but I have seen no other complaints from people running a 24" external. What's even more concerning is that I can switch the external down to lower resolutions (ie 1024x640) and still get the audio dropouts, which should not be happening as the Macbooks own display runs higher than this and I never get a problem when using it that way.
I've tried creating a new user account and the problem persists. Tried repairing disk permissions (although I knew it would make no difference) to no avail. I suppose the next step would be a complete reinstall of Leopard, but obviously would like to avoid this.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be? Do you think it's just the Macbook in general not being able to handle this monitor or a specific problem with mine?
I hope I can get this sorted, it's really off putting having music dropouts while I am working...
    TIA,
    Alex

Next time is happens, try unplugging the external monitor, but only the external monitor. Leave everything else plugged in, including any peripherals, like the Personus and also any attached USB devices. If the problem persists, then start unplugging the peripherals one-by-one.
Generally a display should have no bearing on sound since the GPU (X3100) is completely separate from the CPU where sound is managed.
You haven't said anything about your MacBook's configuration but maybe there is an insufficient amount of RAM for the number of processes running. That's another possibility.

  • Audio Dropouts. Pops & Clicks

I run a Studio using a brand new install of Windows 7 64 Pro (licensed and activated). I am experiencing serious audio dropouts on some of my USB hardware and in windows as well.
The interfaces have been checked with a clean bill of health and run on other machines. Different story with this PC. My processor etc. is plenty hefty enough to handle audio.
When I run latency monitor I am redlining on the USBPORT.SYS port drivers. This cannot happen in an audio production environment. I am getting very noisy recordings and brief stutters. I have tried everything to fix this.
My equipment is designed for 2.0 but I see 3.0 capability is installed on my PC. I have done all I can do to improve performance in "power options". Still the conflict remains.
I cannot find any documentation as to how one would disable the offensive settings. I tried disabling the 3.0 in device manager but it made no difference. I would like to disable all or some of  things that relate to this issue, and may appear in the
Bios. These might include Speedstep, EIST, turboboost, c states.
Can someone please advise how I might fix this terrible problem? Thanks in advance.

    try different port to check
because USB controlled by chipset, I suggest update your chipset
use different USB cable to check
also check all the cable which connected to your recording HW

  • Intermittent audio dropouts

This week I upgraded to a late 2008 3GHz 8 Core mac pro from a dual 2.3 G5. At the same time I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I am using USB Harmon Kardon soundstiks.
I have noticed that when playing video content in QT or VLC, occasionally the audio will stop. Most of the time I can go into system preferences and click on soundsticks and the audio will return. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt. I do not know if this is a hardware or software issue.
The processor load is negligible. I have run all updates, repaired permissions, run disk warrior and other maintenance apps. All of my standard tricks do not seem to be working.
I have limited experience with the Intel machines. My lack of monetary fortitude made me a bit late to the party:-)

Yes, I have done all of that. I even tried to set defaults in open firmware only to discover the Intel machines do not have that functionality.
When I upgraded to the intel machine I also discovered that my USB FCP keyboards drivers were no longer supported. I switched to an older bluetooth Mac keyboard and mighty mouse. I do not know if these could be the issue.
I have noticed that when the audio dies during media playback I still have audio for system alert sounds etc. The audio is not being lost on a specific application though. It is being lost on both QT and VLC. I have yet to view one of my long format productions in FCP to see if it will play without audio dropout.
Unfortunately the symptom seems to be completely random and cannot be reproduced at will. If I play a piece of media it might drop audio during the beginning, and the next time it might wait 15-30 minutes before dropping audio.
This makes troubleshooting a bit more problematic. Because I still have the system alert sounds, I tend to think it is a software/OS issue rather than hardware.
I use a seperate firewire diagnostic hard drive for the majority of my troubleshooting. This drive has a current system on it, TTP, Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, iDefrag, and of course disk first aid. It didn't help. Permission repair was accomplished while booted from the disk under test. Other than that, all tests were accomplished from the diagnostic drive. All indicate a strong Pass.
I don't know if this is a snow leopard issue or a conflict with other software. When I purchased this computer it came without a system installed and only one bare 500GB drive. I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard and a migration from my old drive. I am almost at the step of accomplishing a fresh install of the system and manually installing all 250GB of my software. This would be a serious pain. I would really rather avoid it if at all possible. Unless there are other ideas, this is where I am headed.
If this seems to be my best option, then the question remains, should I stick with Snow Leopard or go back to leopard for the system?

  • USB-Audio does not work correct on T430/T530

    Hi all!
I'm owner of a T430 and a T530. Both are new PCs where I have installed Windows XP. The reason for XP is that I own older software and hardware, which is not supported on Windows 7. But it works fine and I have no reason to change hard- and software as long it fulfills my requirements! And Windows XP runs fine and fast on the T430 and T530.
Only problem is an EgoSys USB Audio interdace U2A. It is possible to install and run it, but there is a problem in the communication between operating panel and the hardware. When I move the slider for the level, the level jumps instead a smooth increase of the level, which means not alle values of the slider are transferred to the hardware. There is a similar behaviour with checkboxes: there are states of the U2A which are indicaed with LEDs. When I change the checkbox, sometimes the LED changes, sometimes not. This errors happen very frequently but not reproducable.
I tried several settings in the BIOS, like disabling one CPU, hyperthreading, USB3 etc. I tried the U2a also on a fresh XP-intallation without other software, but all without success, the behaviour of the U2A is always the same!
I also tested with an ExpressCard with USB-port from LogiLink, but this card does not recognize the U2A at all.
Up to now I have used the U2A on many different PCs without problems. What might be the reason that it does not work on an ThinkPad? Up to now I was very satified with the U2A and I would not like to replace it!

  • Kanex MIni DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter --NO SOUND

    Hi,
I just purchased a Kanex Mini DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter for my new Samsung flat screen so I could watch netflix movies. The guy at Tekserve (NYC based authorized dealer) said it's really cool b/c it's audio and video all in one. Two cables are attached to a small box on one side and on the other side of the box is for the HDMI cable which goes to the TV (most of you prpbably already know this) .
The two attached cables fit into the the USB (audio) + mini display port. The video works great, but no sound. I called Apple for tech support and we tried a few things like changing the sound output to USB, but no luck.
I can call Tekserve on Monday, but would love to figure this out before then for the week-end.
    Thanks everyone for your help.
    Mary

There are actually 2 different Mini Display port to HDMI adapters from Kanex. One supports 2 channel audio through the USB audio out cable, which is the one you have Mary. The other one with the extra audio plug cable supports 5.1 digital audio.
    http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3323
    http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
I don't have either of these adapters but I would think that you "should" be able to go into your System Preferences under Sound. If the USB plug from the adapter is plugged into your MacBook, then it should show up in the output window in the Sound preferences which you would then choose instead of outputting the sound to the built-in MacBook speakers.
At the bottom of the product description page of the adapter that you have (the USB 2.0 version), it says this:
+Sound Output setting on Macs must be changed to "USB Sound Device/USB Type" to have the adapter operating correctly.+*
Let us know if you get it working properly. I'm considering getting one also.
Sorry.... I just re-read your initial post and it sounds like you already DID try switching the sound output to USB with no luck. The only other thing I can think of is the adapter might be bad and maybe exchange it for another one from where you purchased it. Or you could maybe exchange it for the 5.1 digital audio out version. Although it sounds like your sound is going directly into the tv via HDMI and not a surround sound receiver.
Kanex does have tech support and contact links on their web page. Maybe you should email them directly about your problem. Unfortunately I'm sure you'll have to wait til sometime during the work week to get a reply back.

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro, running OS10.9, to recognize USB audio?

The audio source I'm using is an M-Audio Audiophile USB box.
I tried downloading the driver from here:
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=6&PID=41cf7347b2 0eff77b69588578a74aa58&OS=x114#tabs
But when I double-click the executable, it says it won't launch because it's from an "unidentified" developer.
In desperation, I then tried this:
    http://download.cnet.com/USB-Audio-ASIO-driver/3000-2120_4-6405.html
But it appears to be designed for Mac OS9, and won't open.
Any ideas?  I can't imagine the modern OSX10.9 operating system simply won't support USB audio sources.
    Thanks.

In the system preferences under the security & privacy section click the Lock icon and type in your password. Then in the section for "Allow Apps downloaded from:" area tick the Anywhere entry. Your app and drivers will now install.

  • Audio dropouts since updating to iTunes 8

Had a stable working iTunes to Airport Express to stereo connection going for at least two years until I installed iTunes version 8 shortly after it came out. When I updated to version 8 I started receiving an error message and I had to upgrade the firmware on the AX to fix that. Ever since that time I haven't been able to use iTunes for more than 30 minutes or so without audio dropouts. Nothing else in the environment changed.
I have tried these fixes (some suggested in other posts) and they all failed:
    1) Switched from optical to standard RCA cables between the AX and stereo.
    2) Used Airport Admin Utility to enable Interference Robustness. This made the problem worse.
    3) Switching to multiple speakers.
    4) Leaving the Airport Utility program OPEN.
    5) Removing interference from 2.4Ghz phones
    My set up:
Windows XP Pro on 2 Gb RAM
    iTunes 8.0.2.20
    AX 6.3
I live in the country 200 yards away from the nearest neighbor.
I was hoping that Apple would come out with a fix. Am I waiting in vain?
Been forced to go back to my 400 disc changer, but it's not the same.

  • IPod Touch 2nd gen. audio dropouts

I just received my 2nd gen 8GB touch. Transferred one album to it for testing. The sound every now and then drops out for a split second. Never in the same spot in music though- so it's not a bad rip or faulty transfer. The dropouts also occur when listening to Pandora. I did a complete restore- and it didn't help. Turned off WiFi, no better.
Is this a known problem or is it unique to my iPod?
    Any known solutions?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem with audio dropouts with the Gen 2 32GB iPod Touch running Apple lossless, yet I never had this problem with Apple Gen 1 16GB iPod Touch running Apple lossless. This is a serious quality control issue and reflects lack of beta-testing. I have toyed with the idea of jumping into the Apple laptop world (from the PC world), but not now. I think this company has become marketing hype and does not care about quality control or perfection of a product. Lastly, I realy believe the audio quality is not on par with the Gen 1 iPod Touch (Klipsh IMAGE Headphones)-another suggestion of quality reduction to pay for marketing.

    Problem Solved!
It turned out to be a combination of the usb cable and the OTG USB hub.  On my desktop the iBaso was cable specific as to the device being recognized.  When I tried the working cable witht the OTG hub on the Stream 7 it failed as usual.  But when I tried the cheap monoprice adapter it worked.
The usb audio solves the horrible sound problem with the Stream 7 for anybody who is lookiing for a Fix.
The OTG hub works with a mouse and  a mSata drive perfectly but not with the iBAso DAC.
Thanks to everyone who replied for keeping me trying.

  • No Digital Output available in Playback devices (USB audio device)

If one has USB audio device with coax/toslink out, with proper drivers (like ie TurtleBeach Micro Advantage) available & installed then Digital Output is available to select in Playback devices. (and one can play AC3/DTS to external amplifier with ie
VLC or MPC-HT with AC3Filter DS filter)
But some USB devices (ie Phonic Digitrack -
http://www.phonic.com/en/digitrack.html ) do NOT come with drivers (as Windows has default build in). Digitrack uses TI
    Burr-Brown USB Audio Codec 2906 -
    http://www.ti.com/product/pcm2906
Sadly these Windows drivers do NOT have a clue about what the device actually has as inputs/outputs
So even it had coax digital out & the sound IS send via it, the actual data send is in right way, not recognized/played correctly by Digital Amplifier (AC3/DTS)
Does anybody know of a hack to make Digital Out available?

    Hi,
Generally speaking, An Audio Device do need more driver besides USB driver to make itself work properly. In terms of your situation, USB driver is not enough to make your Audio Device works properly.  I think S.Sengupta
is right. Actually it would be better to contact Digitrack support to confirm its product compatibility with Windows 7.
