USB ports suddenly stop working: xhci_hcd and ehci_hcdwontload[SOLVED]

Hello everyone.  I am having USB issues on my HP dv6t-7000. I was using my USB keyboard/mouse and the USB was working fine.  I then plug in a flash drive and ALL USB PORTS STOP WORKING.  So I tried the usual fix of reloading xhci_hcd.
rmmod xhci_hcd
modprobe xhci_hcd
but nothing happens.  I check lsmod and the module is not loaded. Neither is ehci_hcd:

A new kernel was just installed via pacman.  I haven't booted it yet.  Maybe that will fix it?
EDIT: This is happening with kernel 3.7.6-1-ARCH.  Especially after the computer goes to sleep.

Well 2.0 ports work now.
3.0 works for a few seconds, then stops.

I have a mac book pro that both USB ports have stopped working one about a year ago and one recently. Is it possible to connect to another one of the other MBP's  ports with a cord that ends with a USB port?

Thank you For your time and thoughts!
I went by the Apple Store and they told me that there was a "Flat Rate" repair service for this particular part where they would replace the logic board along with the USB ports for $350. Seems like best avenue. All of this would have been moot but my wifi in the computer also doesn't work so I was using my phone as a hot spot and tethering it to the computer for Internet access when the last port quit. This left me with no internet and no printing capabilities on the computer I use for my business. Basically became a nice paperweight. lol
They will ship it off Monday and I should have it back Thursday!
    Again, thank you!

  • USB Ports Randomly Stop Working

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook with Windows 7. All of the ports, 2 2.0 and 2 3.0 ports, began to randomly stop working. My mouse light would still light up, but the mouse wouldn't work. If I rebooted the entire laptop, all of the ports would come back on for a short period of time before they randomly shut off again. They will also come back on for a short period of time if I close the lid for a few seconds and reopen it. However, lately, the 3.0 ports have stopped working entirely and the 2.0 ports stopping is becoming more frequent.
The first time I noticed this was when I was testing a micro usb cable (it has stopped charging and I was testing whether it was the cable or the wall adapter). I plugged the cable into one of the 2.0 ports and it gave me a USB surge warning. Other than that, I haven't received any notices. The drivers are up to date. I have uninstalld the root hubs multiple times. I have tried all kinds of Power plans for the laptop. Nothing works. The USB ports still stop working, and it's becoming increasingly more frustrating.

    Hello Abby_Renee,
With the USB 3.0 port not working, and your 2.0 port working intermittently, I would suggest the following document Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7) for troubleshooting.
In this document there is a specific option for USB 3.0 ports stop working, which would be the best steps to follow for your 3.0 ports. Now for the 2.0 ports, I would suggest USB device not detected by Windows (no device name in device manager), or the other option is USB devices are detected by Windows but are not working properly. The last two options are dependant on the specific errors you are experiencing.
Please let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting steps.
    Good Luck!
I worked on behalf of HP

  • Why has my USB Superdrive suddenly stopped working with my MacBook Pro?

Why has my Apple USB SuperDrive suddenly stopped working with my MacBook Pro?
Normally I plug it in and insert a CD or DVD and it is immediately recognised, but today it took the DVD, made a 'whirring' noise for a few seconds and then stopped without being recognised.

Try the options on this list:

  • Sound and USB ports suddenly not working

I have HP pavilion dm3-1103au which i bought about 3 years ago.. Everything was worked fine since the first time I use this notebook until about 3 weeks ago when I used it to watch a film suddenly the sound changed to noise sound and then my notebook sound not coming out at all from speaker and headset.. Then I restarted my notebook and then the sound working normally but after a moment the sound stop coming out again..
I check my sound driver to see any updates but it say my driver are up to date.. Then I go to sound control and test my speakers but it shows a warning that says "the device is being used by another application. Please close any devices that are playing audio to this device and then try again." I dont know what application that is using the sound because it happen when I didnt open any app..
After about several days later, the problem seems to became worst.. All USB ports suddenly have a problem too.. My USB mouse stop working at random time.. Then I try to insert my flashdisk and sometimes it can be recognized but when I try to copy files to my flashsdisk, it disconnected when the process of copying has not finished..
when i go to device manager the 'standard openHCD USB Host Controller' have a warning sign.. I check for updates but it says the driver was up to date.. So I try to uninstall it and restart my notebook.. but it didnt solve the problem..
I have reinstall and upgrade my windows from windows 7 to windows 8 but it still have the same problem and become worst.. now the sound not coming out at all from the speakers and headset from the windows starts.. Please help me.. I have no idea what cause the problems.. I think it's not hardware related..

    Hello lynz00,
Did you check out this page to see if your computer has been tested by HP with Windows 8, prior to upgrading to Windows 8?
HP is not going to support hardware for Windows 8 on any system purchased before Oct 1st 2011.  I realize your issue began prior to upgrading to Windows 8, but don't think the upgrade is the way to fix it.
Did you backup everything in Windows 7 in order to downgrade, prior to upgrading to Windows 8?

  • The ethernet ports suddenly stopped working on airport extreme wondering why and how to fix the problem

I use the ethernet cable to connect my airport extreme to a linksys router to extend the network but suddenly all the ethernet cables on airport extreme stopped working and now the linksys won't get a connection. I was wondering why this might of happened and if there is a solution to fix the problem. Also i wondering if i should get rid of the linksys and get and airport express to just extend the network.

The Extreme to Express without the Linksys router is the most compatible way to go but I would first check out the Extreme by itself and make sure everything is working properly

  • My mini DVI port suddenly stopped working! :(

Hi! I hope everyone is doing well. I bought a mini DVI port to connect my macbook pro to the projector. It was working perfectly until yesterday, it suddenly stopped. I mean the laptop won't show on the projector. when I play around with the port and the cord and move them, they show a blue screen like the one that appears when the laptop detects a projector but NOTHING happens then. The laptop normal screen comes agian! I know that there is a problem maybe with the cord or the laptop mini DVI slot! How can I know where the problem is? I don't wanna buy a new port then the problem appears to be from the laptop.
    Peace and thanks in advance!

They tested it with their cable and mine.  First off, they connected an external screen to the mini port.  With their cable and mine, they could not get the "detect display" to see the screen.
Then they rebooted the machine from an external drive/os and it immediately recognised the external screen.
So the diagnosis was that it was a software thing.  I asked them if they could refresh the drivers or clear the settings but they were pretty unhelpful - did not want to go there.  Basically they said rebuild the OS from the ground.
I find this somewhat frustrating as surely there is some soft settings that can be done without rebuilding.  Are there any "preferences" or similar types of things that I can delete out of the library file.....?  (I am not a Mac tech guy - I am a user.....).

  • HT1338 MiniDVI port suddenly stopped working

I first thought my external monitor or HDMI cable stopped working, but when I tried with my iMac, I realized it must be the port on the MacBookPro. I upgraded to Mountain Lion about a week ago and the external worked until this morning. Anyone else have trouble, or should I assume the port went bad? 15" late-2011 MBP.

Not sure if your advice is what fixed my port or not... I tried reseting the parameter RAM but nothing happened like you explained. I looked on Apple’s site on how to reset it, and their instructions were pretty much just as you described. (Except there were supposed to be two chimes and not three). Ithink pressing commandoption+pr had some kind of effect because the computer seemed to take longer to start up than usual. Unfortunately the USB port at this point still doesn’t work.
Finally I decided to take off the back panel, thinking maybe one of the gold pins on the Mobo were some kind of ground, and that they somehow (at-least one of them) were no longer grounding. I put the computer back together and start it up... And YES! the USB port works again!
You think it was a grounding issue? Or did I just need to take out the battery for several minuets?

  • Could both of my USB ports have stopped working at once?

Before today, I have repeatedly connected my printer and camera to my MacBook Pro. But today nothing has worked through either USB port: not a Seagate external hard drive, not the printer, and not my camera. Could something have gone wrong with the ports all of the sudden? Can I do anything other than send it in for repair?

  • USB ports have stopped working on my 975 power up platinum

For some reason the usb ports on the mb & the front of the case antec p160 have stopped working, I have not added anything new or removed anything, the firewire ports are still working though. I have tried removing the usb root hub  restarting the pc and letting windows reinstall the driversbut it does not make any difference. Does any one have any idea what the problem my be.

He means what is in the thread labled "If you're having problems with USB ports, read on...  "
The USB issue has followed several boards. Here is a quote from a post I've made on the subjetct.
    Quote from: Frankeputer
Check to see if there is a wire running from your Front USB ports to the #10 slot of your USB block which connects to the motherboard header.
USB connector block layout which corresponds to the pin layout on boards with the Intel spec for USB. Do not cut the pin on the MOBO. You are removing/cutting the wire to the connector block from the case.
    2 4 6 8 10(this wire, #10, not needed)
    1 3 5 7 9(filled/key)
If you find a wire leading to the #10 spot on the block, remove that wire. My block has tabs so that you can pull the wire out, or you could snip/cut the wire leading to that position--if you cut the wire, be careful to cut the correct one and cut it in such a way that it may be repaired if you make a mistake.  Make sure you wrap the wire, the exposed end/s, you remove/cut with electrical tape so as not to accidentally cause a short. I actually folded the wire back and wrapped it.
2 posts to read--Here and Here.
This seems to be a common issue involving many different case manufacturers. I don't know how it applies to other MOBO manufacturers, but in these forums it is not limited to a specific MSI model or supported chipset(Intel or AMD).

  • USB audio suddenly stops working

It's really weird.  Regular audio output works fine, but if I plug in a USB audio device it will work for about a minute and then stop.  I can reproduce this reliably with both a Griffin iMic and a C-Media USB audio widget.  Once the device has stopped working, if I unplug it and plug it back in it wiil work for another minute or so and then stop again.  This only started happening in the last week or so.  Before that it was working fine for months.  AFAIK I haven't changed anything.  I haven't done any major software updates, and I'm not running any new applications.
Also, while it's not working, it's not off 100%.  It seems to have something to do with the audio driver.  If, for example, I do this at the terminal:
say hello world ; say hello world ; say hello world
I will hear "hello ... hello ... hello ..." (where the elipses indicate about a second of silence).
    If I do:
say hello ; say hello ; say hello
then I just get little blips of sound.
Has anyone seen this problem before?

  • My Toshiba Satellite A660 USB ports don't work and the webcam doesn't either.

For some odd reason all my USB ports doesn't work. It worked fine with I got it and this laptop is pretty much new. I also tried to uninstall and install the USB device back but I always get an error saying it didn't work. Any solutions to fix this?
Also, my webcam doesn't work. Every time I log into my laptop I always get this error saying "Web camera initialization failed. Please check your camera device and restart application or computer." I have no idea how to fix this. Can anyone help me out please?

For your USB ports, try this one first..
    1. Make sure that the power light is off.
    2. Unplug you AC adapter form your laptop then remove the battery.
    3. Without those two, hold down the power button for 10 seconds then release it. After that put the battery and the AC adapter in.
    4. Turn NB on and just choose start windows normally.
This is the simplest thing that you can do. Basically, the reason behind this is because it will reset the microprocessor on your system board. Try this first then if it failed check these links:
USB port may stop working after you remove or insert a USB device

For your webcam, you said it is giving out a message "Web camera initialization failed. Please check your camera device and restart application or computer.", that means the application is not installed properly. You only need to uninstall it first from Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features (make sure that view should be in large icons) then look for the Web Camera Application (looking at your laptop model I assume it's Toshiba Camera Application) then uninstall it. To reinstall it back, pull up the Toshiba Application Installer by going to Start then type in Toshiba Application Installer. Once you got it pulled up, click on Next Button and look for the application that has a name webcamera from the list and install it.

    HELP ME
My usb ports work fine until Sunday, I restart the W8 OS and they don't work (my last activity was configure a router but I didn't install anything). I've two OS (W8 and Ubuntu 11.1) and I tried all and my USB ports don't work. I don't have any idea about the cause of the problem. All work fine except my USB ports. They are enable according to the BIOS but the OS (W8, W7 or Ubuntu) doesn't recognize any device.
    I tried this things:
    - Change my porwer supply
    - Restart the BIOS to the Fail-Safe and Optimal value default
    - Clear the CMOS (Changing the jumper and remove the battery)
    - Remove the W8 and install W7
    - Remove W7 and install Ubuntu 11.04
    - Flash the BIOS to the last update (it's the same that was loaded in the BIOS)
Currently, I don't know what I must do it. I'm really disappointed with this board (MSI 880GMS-E35). This is my second problem with these model. Previously, I've one and it didn't supply the energy to start the proccesor (Phenon X4 955). My actual board works fine until Sunday.
Please help me to solve the problem.

OK, I have no idea but fortunately my usb ports work fine now.
I don't know how to fix the problem. But I can assure that thanks to Ubuntu it's fixed. My last two operations were:
    - Flash the BIOS
    - Check lsusb
Yesterday, I'm full disappointed and I was going to prepare my hard discussion with my provider when suddenly I found a this post:
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/69594/my-usb-ports-randomly-stop-working-till-a-reboot
But before to enter the command in the Ubuntu's console, I saw that my USB devices work. It's amazing!!! I'm a newer electronic engineer and I saw events similar that this more than once time in my labs (Typical student experiences).
If anyone has the same problem, I could recommend:
    - Check BIOS usb options
If these are ok, else enable the propertly options
    - Check # lsusb (In Linux)
If your ports don't appear check the PSU (Maybe there are others things that you should check) else
    - Check # dmesg | tail (Before and after to connect a usb device)
If there is an error saw in forums, maybe it's the common problem so far (Incompatibility in the kernel -error hci-)
    - Type # acpi = force irqpoll
    ELSE
    - Flash the bios as show in this forum
ACLARATION: I think that this algorithm might help you but I don't prove this. It's your responsible to do that. I only write the items that I learn with this issue.
CONCLUSION: I don't wish that anyone has this problem. I lost one week trying to solve it.

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.
