Usb scanner with root permissions only
Hello
When I open xsane with regular a user, the scanner does not get detected by it. Only when I open xsane as root.
That's probably a permission issue. My user is added to the scanner group.
How would I correct this?
Thanks
brebs wrote:
Write a udev rule to identify the scanner and give it the right user group & permissions. Google search is your friend
Just to confuse the hell out of us, different distros use different group names. Some have "scanner", some use "usb", some don't even have "usb".
Example: In /etc/udev/rules.d/91-local.rules
# Scanner.
# sane-find-scanner ; scanimage -L
# From http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-33 … ml#3311185
# udevadm info -a --name /dev/usbdev5.3_ep00
# "libusb:003:015" probably means /dev/bus/usb/003/015
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{product}=="CanoScan", GROUP="usb", MODE="0660", SYMLINK+="lide25"
I googled it quite a bit to find out this process is rather difficult for newbies. I even read udev wiki but I can't come up with a rule myself. The gentoo forum post you referenced has udevinfo command while it has been replaced with udevadm and the script wouldn't work.
Would you give me more directions?
Here's the output of sane-find-scanner as root.
[root@myhost ~]# sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x2504 [Deskjet F4200 series]) at libusb:001:004
found USB scanner (vendor=0x050d [Belkin], product=0x705c [USB2.0 WLAN]) at libusb:001:003
[root@myhost ~]# scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_F4200_series?serial=CN83I3Y197052D' is a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet_F4200_series all-in-one
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname Kworld ATSC110/115 virtual device
[root@myhost ~]#
I understand the device would be 001:004, but how would I write a rule for it?
Thanks

4g USB modem with Android (wifi only, ICS) tablet?
Will the VZW UML290 4g USB modem work with an Android tablet (obviously without a built-in 4g radio, only wifi)? There is no VZ Access Manager software for Android, would an Android networking app do the trick?
Hi, I have the same question because I want to buy a Transformer Prime. <Content deleted per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service>
The best that I could find is that you'll do just fine with a MiFi hotspot device and the appropriate Verizon account. Reviews seem to favor the 4510 L over the Samsung MiFi device. If you have an account for the Pantech now, you can upgrade your contract to the MiFi. All of your computers, Android, Mac and Windows will work on the MiFi hotspot because there is no software needed to connect.
Alternatively, you can check out Cradlepoint wireless routers. They offer a boatload of portable WiFi routers that can tether to any number of mobile devices including the Pantech UML290. For the Pantech, you plug it into the Cradlepoint router's USB port and create your own portable hotspot LEGALLY with your Verizon Pantech account. You then connect your Transformer wirelessly to this hotspot bypassing the need to use the VZW interface that is not yet, and may never be, Android compatible.
As for your original post regarding an Android app for the Pantech UML290, I'm certain some 'enterprising' droid devotee is working on it, However, I've not yet found anything on the web yet that provides a viable work around except for the completely legit MiFi from Verizon or a Cradlepoint wireless router.
NB to Verizon support. You should have provided the MiFi information, it's your product for pete's sake.
Good luck!

Okay, I'm totally confused.
I have a Canon Lide-30 USB scanner which I have used under Arch Linux many times--but not for 2 or 3 months. However, I was never able to configure hotplug to set the permissions automatically; I always had to become root and manually set the permissions in order to access the scanner as a regular user. Now, of course, the devices are all different (I mostly keep up with the latest release, don't really use testing packages, so I now have kernel 2.6.14).
Here's what's happening:
I plugged in the scanner's USB cable after booting (my machine's been up continuously for a few days, so I would have to shut down to do otherwise).
Loaded the uhci-hcd module ... now /proc/bus/usb is mounted, and it contains a node for my scanner.
Run sane-find-scanner as root:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x220e [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:001:002
Run sane-find-scanner as myself: same as above
Run xsane as root: OK.
Run xsane as myself: No devices found.
# chmod 777 /dev/usbdev1.2 (which I think represents the scanner)
# chmod 777 /dev/usbdev1.1
# chmod 777 /proc/bus/usb/001/002
# chmod 777 /proc/bus/usb/001/001
No change. I still can't access the scanner as myself.
By the way, it appears that the hotplug daemon won't start, though I'm not quite sure why. There are no files in /var/log/hotplug. In /var/log/errors, I see
DEVPATH is not set (subsystem pci)
But according to a brief Google search, this is not a serious problem.
So what's the magic formula?Have you read this?

USB Scanner Permissions without hotplug
After getting rid of hotplug, the permissions for my usb scanner aren't set to scanner:root anymore. Udev is supposed to take care of everything hotplug used to do, but it doesn't seem to do this automatically. Could anyone explain how I can make udev set the permissions correctly for my usb scanner?
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot I had made my own sane-package, since a former version broke the support for my scanner (Epson CX3200), but that's fixed now. I updated Sane, and everything works. (Still, I have to replug the scanner after booting, for the permissions to get set, though)

User permissions problem? Problems with 1 account only
Hello,
I have some weird problem that've been driving me crazy for weeks/months.
There may be different problems or they could be related (as they only happen on 1 account, the other is fine).
Problem nr 1.
Google chrome is loading blank pages. And I don't mean : 'sometimes' - only blank. Even if I try to open 'Bookmarks Manager' or 'Preferences' or 'Extensions' - blank blank blank. I tried deleting the extensions manually in the Library/ Application Support/Google/Chrome - but it didnt help. Tried reinstalling Chrome - meaning adding a new 'Chrome 2' in the Application folder (doesnt help as it appears to take the preferences/settings from the 'library') so again pages are blank. If I delete the whole folder - Chrome crashes and doesnt want to start at all.
I also tried restoring the Library Chrome folder from the Time Machine, but it didnt help either - maybe I was restoring the wrong files/folders..
Other browsers work just fine.
Problem nr 2.
iPhoto doesnt detect an inserted SD card (whereas Finder and Image Capture detect it just fine, its only iPhoto)
Problem nr 3.
Cant update any software as I'm being told I don't have permissions (cant recall the exact message and now the software is up to date so cant check)
More context:
I believe it happened after a software update where due to lack of disk space things got a bit out of control (imac wouldnt start and I had to start the mac in the safe mode in order to make space on the drive etc).
It only happens on 1 of the profiles , the other is working just fine (both have Admin rights) - that is why I supposed it's something to do with the permissions.
Steps already taken:
- Verify/repair Disk (no errors found)
- Verify/repair Permissions - several times
- Reset Permissions via "ResetPassword" utility via Repair HD on reboot
- all the other Google Chrome manipulations described above
Questions:
Is there anything else I can do to try to reset/repair the account?
Is there a way to create a new account but to use the same 'login name' (from what I read it's kinda difficult but maybe there is an easy way)
Any other ideas for any of the individual problems.
Any help greatly appreciated.
MartaMy speed reading failed to catch that nuance. Since it works in the new admin account, peruse the preference files in the hidden user /Library/Preferences/. One of those in the borked account is corrupted or causing a conflict. Start with moving the obvious ones to the Desktop, restarting, and seeing if the default ones restore usability.

iPad will not charge if hooked by USB to pc or plugged into wall. How do I know if the problem is with iPad, cable or power adapter. I have a 12, 10 and 5W adapters no success with any. Only one lightening cable so can't swap cables.
I'm sorry but this is too funny to pass up.

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.
Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

I was attempting to update iphone 4s today, laptop went flat during the last stages. The iphone now only displays USB cord, with an arrow pointing towards iTunes emblem. iTunes will not accept/read the iphone. HELP??
If you have the latest version of iTunes you should not have to download the ipsw file separately as jalp suggests. iTunes will download it automatically.
This error (9) most often means that your antivirus or firewall (or router) is blocking access to Apple's servers. In rare instances it can also mean that the phone was hacked (or "jailbroken") to unlock it. If this is the case you must do a DFU restore, not Recovery Mode, as follows:
Reboot your computer
Disable your antivirus and firewall. If you has Kaspersky you may actually have to uninstall it, as it can never be turned completely off.
Connect the USB cable to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. DO NOT connect the other end to the phone
Disconnect all USB devices except for mouse, keyboard and iPhone cable.
Launch iTunes
On the phone hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time for EXACTLY 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP button but continue holding the HOME button. The screen should be black. If it has an Apple logo this means you held both buttons too long. Release the HOME button and do it again.
While holding the HOME button connect the free end of the cable to the phone.
After a short while iTunes should recognize a phone in "recovery mode" (iTunes doesn't know the difference between DFU and Recovery modes, but the phone does)
Release the HOME button and don't touch the phone or the computer until the process completes or you get an error message. Ignore any displays on the phone.
If the error recurs the phone was probably messed up when it was hacked. This is not a hardware problem, or if it is, it isn't one you can fix.
You can try repeating these steps with a different computer and a different cable. If that fails also the phone is probably not repairable. -
How to make form field read only for users with certain permissions
We need to make two form fields read only for users with certain permissions. Kindly guide me on how to do this in Infopath. I searched and there is an option to disable to the column, but no option to select user permissions.
Please give your suggestion on this.
thanks.Hi,
See the link below:
http://info.akgroup.com/blog-0/bid/69277/InfoPath-Restrict-visibility-to-users-in-a-SharePoint-Group
Here you can add the fomatting action on the field to disable the field if those users belong to certain Sharepoint group (does not matter the permission levels though). Hope it helps.

iPhone contacts: file transfer to Windows 7 via USB-cable
My iPhone can communicate with the computer only via USB-cable (no mobile data, no bluetooth, no internet, no outlook). As I want to get the phone to the "doctor" I want to save specifically my contact data and calendar details on the computer (OS: Windows 7). How can I solve this task? I will appreciate your valuable information, thanks.Using the iPhone, the USB cable, iTunes and Windows Contacts, sync the iPhone contacts to Windows Contacts. That will save them there. They are also included in the iPhone backup made in iTunes, and if you use iCloud.
I'm sorry, I missed the calendar part the first time I looked. For calendar, you need a supported application on the computer (Outlook) or if you use iCloud, you can use the iCloud contacts and calendar app to sync. -
I downloaded IOS 7 but my iPad is solid black! It wont show the apple or charging sign! It only shows a usb cable with an iTune logo but that is it! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are in Recovery Mode. Follow the instructions below to recover your iPad.

USB devices automounted with wrong permissions
When I plug in my usb hardrive (in KDE) the volumes are automounted in /media/volume-name with root as owner and group - which means I'm not able to access the volumes.
I'm using KDE 3.5.4-6, all my packages are up to date (hal/udev/dbus etc.).
How can I get the volumes to be automounted so that I can access them (also, some of the volumes are fat so I'd like them to mount as umask=000).i've got the same problem after updating my system (pacman -Syu) two or three weeks ago.
i decided to wait for an update of hal and dbus at first. today they both got an update - the problem still exists.
before upgrading everything was fine. plugged in my usbstick/hdd and it was available in "media:/" for users
now it's available too, but owner is always root.
my user is added to the groups "storage, hal, dbus"
dbus and hal are running and working.
i don't know where to say kde to mount it as user or with umask=000 -
USB scanner stopped working after PC upgrade
I have HP Officejet 4500 all in one printer. It has both USB and ethernet connections.
This week I have upgraded all PC components (so everything is new) except SSD drive so that I was able to continue where I stopped working.
However, my USB connection with printer stopped working.
First of all, I need to say, that I had to make scanner working over ethernet, so now my printer/scanner works without USB, but:
1. what may be the reason to stop USB connection working?
scanimage -L has usually expected output:
scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=CN141F219005CQ' is a Hewlett-Packard Officejet_4500_G510g-m all-in-one
but sometimes:
scanimage -L
and sometimes:
scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=0' is a Hewlett-Packard Officejet_4500_G510g-m all-in-one
When I try to scan over USB:
scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=CN141F219005CQ failed: Invalid argument
sometimes it stucks and sometimes:
scanimage --format=tiff > test.tiff
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Officejet_4500_G510g-m?serial=0 failed: Invalid argument
I have tried all steps on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Scanner site. I remind, that on the old PC it was working correctly. The problem appeared after upgrade.
