USB3 drive appears to be detected...

Hey all, wondered if I could have some assistance in getting to the bottom of why my USB 3.0 HDD is not working on my archlinux system...
When I plug it in to a USB 3.0 slot, although it gets power, nothing appears to happen. It all works in Windows. If I run "dmesg -w" then when I connect the drive I get the following response:
[ 2762.101985] usb 4-2: new SuperSpeed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd
[ 2762.118116] usb-storage 4-2:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected
[ 2762.118441] scsi7 : usb-storage 4-2:1.0
If I disconnect the drive, I receive:
[ 3977.365140] usb 4-2: USB disconnect, device number 3
I would have thought that this would mean that the device is being detected, but not automounted. However, if I run "fdisk -l" as root, then the USB 3.0 drive is NOT listed. As a control I plugged in a USB 2.0 drive into a USB 2.0 slot, and then run "fdisk -l" again; the USB 2.0 drive was successfully listed.
Not sure where to go from here... if anyone has any ideas, their input would be fantastically appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ok. I have tested it with another USB3.0 hard drive ( a WD MyBook) and it works fine. This is the output given by connecting it.

I realise that I forgot to mention that very rarely my USB3.0 drive DOES work if it is plugged into the computer on bootup. However I have not been able to replicate that over the past few days.
I have run lspci -nn both before and after connecting the drive; there is no difference before or after I connect. The output is:

  • CD/DVD Optical drive appears and then disappears, replacement also does not show up

    My laptop: HP Pavilion dv9601AU
I have read a similar post here but my problem is different. My problem is that the DVD drive *sometimes* show up in My Computer and *sometimes* dont. Even the BIOS does not detect it.  When I formatted my laptop with Windows 7, to my surprise it was gone. But it appeared again and I somehow installed all the required drivers from my driver DVD.... then it dissapered again. It never came back.
Failed attempt 1: I tried to re-format the PC using virtual drive but the problem persists.
Failed attempt 2: Thinking it to be a physical loose connection, I took it to local HP service station, they removed the drive, put it back firmly, but in vain.
Failed attempt 3: They attached other similar optical drive but to my surprise, the new drive was also not detected.
Failed attempt 4: I tried Microsoft's "Fix It" thing and also read about removing "upper filters" and "lower filters" in registry. However, I didnt have any of those filters entry in the first place so no question about making changes to the registry.
    Facts:
    1) The drivers are installed. There should not be any problem with the drivers.
    2) The lens is perfect. I was able to install all the drivers from DVD when the drive appeared for a short period of time.
    3) The HP logo tht appears upon starting the laptop lingers for a longer period of time compared to what it was doing so when the drive was fine.
    4) The boot menu does not show the optical drive.
    5) I live in India where normal room temperatures go upto 42 degrees Celcius and my laptop gets much much warm most of the times. I think some damage has been done to the internal circuitry.
Please, if somebody can provide me a solution to this. How can I get back my DVD Drive working. The support personnel here are having no clue (especially after learning the fact that their new optical drive also didnt show up) I hope I get some guidance from you guys as what should I do next. Please help me.

I am having the exact same problem with my customer's dvd drive sometimes showing up during boot (BIOS) and sometimes not. Also ran full system diagnostic software and everything else tests fine, although the drive is not showing present. I have also tried 2 different drives but they do the same thing. I would go on to say that if you always left the dvd drive out of the laptop, your boot problems would probably go away. This would then tell you that it's not your drive at all, but the connections on the MOBO or the traces (wires) connecting the drive to the MOBO.
I work on computers and have for several years and most times this is related to a MOBO issue since that is the only item left in this situation. You know it's not the drive since it's been replaced with the same issue so drivers/firmware are not the case. I am assuming you have already updated the BIOS as well,  but this shouldn't matter. There could be a dirty contact, faulty component, or a bad trace (wire) on the MOBO which is almost always harder to fix and is better to just replace the MOBO. However, replacing the MOBO is usually expensive when you have to buy the part and then pay someone to install it making it not usually the best option. Even if it is a dirty contact, it was probably caused by something that was spilled which could cause problems later. In this case, I am probably just going to recommend disabling the internal dvd drive and buying a slim external usb dvd drive, and then saving their money for a new laptop. You will still have to wait through a slower boot while staring at the HP screen, but I don't think replacing the MOBO is the most economical thing to do, unless you are the manufacturer and have several laying around.
I know this isn't good news, but it is what I've found to be the case in my experiences. Anybody else care to chime in?

  • External Hard Drive is not being detected

I recently purchased an iomega 1.5TB external hard drive and I cannot detect it anywhere in my computer. I can hear the device hum and start running once I connect the two, so I'm assuming there is enough power, but the computer can't see it. Please help someone!

Does it appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried FINDER PREFERENCES>GENERAL and checked off the appropriate boxes?

  • Booting from external usb3 drive

Hi, I am trying to boot Linux from an external USB3 drive.
    Here are the symptoms.
    1. I have uefi boot disabled.
    2. I connected a Toshiba USB3 drive to an USB2 port. The device is NOT recognized as a bootable device under Legacy Boot Devices list hence I cannot boot from the USB drive.
    3. If I boot from internal HDD, then I can access the USB3 drive without any problems.
    4. Plugged in an external USB3 Docking Device to the USB2 socket.
    5. Then the USB3 Docking Device is recognized as a Legacy Boot Device and I can boot from the Docking Device.
    6. Installed USB3 PCIe card.
    7. Connected the USB3 Docking Device to USB3 port.
    8. Now I the Docking Device fails to appear as a Legacy Boot Device.
    9. Connected the USB3 Docking Device back to the USB2 port and straight away it is now recognized as a Legacy Boot Device.
I would appreciate if any one can give some hints on how to get the USB3 devices recognized as legacy boot devices.
    Many thanks.

Help us to help you by posting the following information.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of the desktop PC - see This HP web document if you don't how to locate the model number and\or product number.
Enter the BIOS after you have setup the bootable Linux hard disk as shown in the following video andenable usb 3.0 configuration in Pre-OS if it is available in the BIOS. That will enable you to use the USB 3.0 port to boot your usb3 external hard disk with Linux installed.
Which flavor of Linux? The video explains how to do this with Ubuntu.

  • Old External drive appears on SYS. Info., not Disc Utility.

-I have a external enclosure containing my used hdd from my old windows machine connected to my macbook pro retina.
-I am trying to clear it to use with just my mac and cannot see it in my Disc utility, yet can see it in my System info under the usb location.
-There is data on the drive that I wanted to save, but now im desperate enough to just want the drive to backup on.
-I was able to see the drive on my replacement windows machine in disc management but was unable to access it because anything i would do would respond "disc is not ready" or something along those lines.
-I've ruled out connection problems due to the fact that I can see the drive appear in System Information when plugged in, and it is gone when unplugged.
-I have tried a cold boot and get the results above, and trying to hot boot makes my computer not able to boot up at all, even when I dictate to boot with my internal boot drive.
    Thank you for any advise!

you can only repair and verify permissions on a drive with OS X installed. so that part is completely normal.

  • My external drives no longer appear in Finder, BUT they do appear in Disk Utility (and network drives appear also)

Hi folks, I hope someone can assist.  I have a Mac Mini 2011 running 10.8.5.  All has been well. Suddenly, when I plugged in an external flash drive (USB), nothing showed up in Finder.  Things I have done:
Confirmed SideBar and other Finder preferences are set to show/reveal external, network, and internal HDs
Tried multiple flash drives and hard drives, using drives formated in GUID/OSXExtended as well as FAT and NTSF. None show up.
Confirmed that the Hidden flag in terminal is not set.
Note:  I can see the drives in Disk Utility, but the partitions/volumes are gray and will not be mounted.
Note: Network drives and internal drives appear and work as expected
Note: My network Time Machine also appears and performs as expected.
The only suspect I can think of is a small, free app I installed this morning called Caffein (which manages the sleep mode).
Also, I loged out and switched to another user account on the same machine (that I use solely for the purpose of troubleshooting), and it was similarly affected.
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave

this is more widespread of a problem than expected.  After trying several forum recommended fixes, the Only thing that gave me back my CdRom drive was doing a Windows Restore to a date prior to iTunes 11 install.  I got my drive back but it also restored me to the prior 10.0.7.21 vers of iTunes which no longer worked due to missing files. iTunes help

I created a (very) kickass linux install on a 16GB Super Talent Pico-C flash drive that I keep on my keychain!  I have a couple issues I'm working through to make it perfect, and one of them is what drives appear on the desktop.  XFCE usually puts removable media as desktop icons so they can be easily (un)mounted, but in this case, I would like everything except for the partitions on my flash drive to appear.  This includes whatever is present in the machine, other flash drives plugged in, etc.  ATM it just shows the two partitions that exist on my flash drive at any point in time.  What do I need to configure for this to happen?

I have my K8n Neo2 Platinum board configured just fine for 2 WD raptor sata drives in raid 0.  However, I need to add more space so I went out and got a Seagate 180gb IDE drive.  I plug it into the primary IDE slot and the board won't detect the new hard drive.  I have 2 DVD-ROM drives working fine in the Secondary IDE slot.  Why won't the K8n detect what is plugged into the primary IDE slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Jeff

    Okay...
First, remove both of your DVD Drives and try connecting the new HD to the Secondary IDE Interface as master.  Use 'cable-select'.  If the drive then works, leave everything set to cable-select, and try installing the HD as master, and one DVD drive as slave, on the primary channel.   Next, set the other DVD drive to cable select, and install it on the secondary interface as a slave.
If the drive is still not detected after removing both DVD Drives, then try installing the DVD Drives onto the primary interface.  If they work, then you've most likely got a bad HDD.  If they don't...  your mainboard may be bad.

The drive must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - if it is try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database
Note that multiple libraries is not necessary and is generally a bad idea.

  • Seagate USB drives appear on desktop but can't be read or ejected.

I have two different Seagate 1TB USB drives, both formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utilities that work fine on my early 2013 MacBook Pro running Mavericks but cause various issues on my late 2013 Mac Pro (also running Mavericks). The drives will show up when connected to the Mac Pro, but when I try to view the contents of the drives, nothing appears and I cannot eject them. Sometimes, I end up with a spinning beach ball in the Finder. I have run the hardware test on my Mac Pro and no issues were detected. I have also Verified and Repaired the disks using Disk Utilities on my Macbook Pro and no issues were detected for those operations.
I'm figuring this must be some sort of driver issue, but I don't understand why the drives operate fine when connected to my Macbook Pro running Mavericks but not the Mac Pro running Mavericks. I didn't install any drivers on the Macbook Pro to get them to work, they just work.

    >> also Verified and Repaired the disks using Disk Utilities on MacBook Pro
... and why would they need to be repaired on the nMP:?
It sounds like there is an issue with the port you use and assume you used the same cable.
Q: Does the case have its own power brick adapter or one of those cheaper and smaller bus powered?
Seagate does have a Thunderbolt docking station which is very nice and convenient, and of course will cost more than a USB3
Generally I recommend avoiding vendor's cases.
Seems like we need more information  about the drives and case and interface etc.
