Use Ext. HD for Scratch Disk

I have to edit a large project.... a very large project.  I have no other option but to use my MacBook Pro, and I wish to use my external hd to save my project and scratch disks.  Whenever I attempt to set my scratch disk to my external drive, PP (CS5) won't allow me to.  Why?  and can I fix this?
*please keep in mind, i'm a beginner PP user (let alone a beginner Adobe user)*

What KIND of external?
If eSata or Firewire 800 you should be OK... USB is too slow for video editing
I have not used this... for reference only... eSata Dock http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-BlacX-eSATA-Docking-Station/dp/B001A4HAFS/ref=cm_cmu_pg_ t

  • Best Volume Format to choose for Scratch Disk?

    Hello All,
Have an older internal HD (I'm assuming it's SCSI) in my MDD g4 (an 80Gb) and am planning on using it as a scratch disk for Photoshop/etc - what is the best format to choose (Journaled, Extended, etc) when making a scratch disk drive? Or does it even really matter, since there won't be data per se going to and from there?
    Thanks!

it's actually a 76.57 Gb (on the desktop info) HD - I referred to it as 80Gb because it was the original HD that came with the MDD when purchased. Here's what System Profiler gives me:

  • Firewire disk or USB2.0 disk for scratch disk?

I heard many times, everyone recommend Firewire for scratch disk if do video editing with FCP on iMac 27 quad-core i7.
But I feel a bit confused when I use my Sony SDR-12 only with USB2.0 (No Firewire port) to import AVCHD to my iMac. Since it is USB2.0 at the first place while importing, why do I have to upgrade my scratch disk to a higher level Firewire? I assume when manufacture – Sony, etc. default USB2.0 to be their interface, all the other parameters like bit rate etc won’t get any better or worse when I still use USB2.0 scratch disk with FCP.
    Is my assumption all right?
Or, if I use USB2.0 scratch disk, the quality of my video or processing time will be significantly downgraded then Firewire scratch disk?
    Thanks - Reno

Consumer drives at places like Costco are cheap for a reason. No-names often have older technology or limited specs that are not readily apparent but will show up in use. Even the big names reduce features or specs to get the price down for big-box retailers.
You can find good buys at big box stores, but you can do as well or better from places like newegg.com, buy.com, tigerdirect, etc. My personal recommendations are OWC ... and I wouldn't hesitate to get a Lacie d2 Quadra or d2 Quadra Enterprise class drive. And, the vendors StudioX suggested are top notch.
Your profile says you have a 27" Quad-core, i7 iMac, so you appreciate quality and capabilities. Don't skimp on external FW drives, especially for critical data & uses like video.
Best way to protect yourself is read reviews before purchasing, regardless of where you purchase.

  • Using SD Card or ExpressCard for Scratch Disk?

On my old laptop, I know that the patch for Photoshop CS3 allowed using scratch disks on removable media. But on my new computer, I've updated all the software and cannot get these drives to show in the list of scratch disks. The expresscard and SD reader are both built-in to the computer so they are pretty darn fast.
What trick do I have to perform to get these to appear and set them?
    Thanks!
    Kevin

Do you have any mapped network drives? One annoyance (on Xp) is that card reader drive letter assignment appears to ignore drive letters assigned to mapped network drives and will always start assignment with next drive letter after your local fixed drives. If you un-map network drives your card reader drive will "magically" appear. (I get around this problem by assigning mapped drives starting at high drive letters.)

  • What do you guys use for scratch disks on iMac?

We're about to upgrade to new iMacs / Mac Pros and I'm wondering what you guys use for your second scratch disk? Thunderbolt dock? Thunderbolt G-Raid?
Has anyone successfully made their global scratch disk their fibre connected shared storage (Terrablock) and not had Premiere behave strangely? That would be the best option I think, but found that Premiere froze up a lot more when we did.

I have a pair of 4-bay Pegasus Thunderbolt 2 enclosures attached to my Mac Pro, and one of the volumes in one of the enclosures is my scratch space.

  • External solid state drive for scratch disk?

After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
    Thanks!

Chris, here is the most recent one from right after I added the additional scratch drive. Thanks for taking a look at it!

  • Which is better for scratch disk?

Which would be a better solution to use as a scratch disk, a 500gb external firewire 800 drive (5400 rpm)or a seperate partition dedicated for FCP on a Macbook Pro's internal HD (also 5400 rpm)?

You don't want to use your internal for media. The system drive has enough work, just running the OS and FCP, without trying to read/write video media...particularly PRORES.
I've not worked with it, but understand it to be pretty hefty and generally requires a hefty RAID to function well.
Partitioning just makes the drive head have to jump around even more than when using a non partitioned drive.
7200 drives will be better as your external(s).

  • CS5 using wrong drives for scratch

I'm running CS5 in win7/64bit, booting from C: and have a bunch of other drives, one of which is a FAT formatted external I: I have scratch set up on L: and C:, I: is unchecked in the performance prefs, yet PS is using I: for scratch. I can tell this because I see files like 5380_982581875_MVM_0.tmp created (interestingly they appear when running liquify).
I'm getting a disk full pop-up in liquify even though the disk isn't full - the problem is that the scratch file is getting to be 4gb which is the limit for FAT. Procmon (from sysinternals) confirms that it's the file on I: that's being written to when liquify gives the pop-up (and that a disk full error is happening).
Anyway, the real question is why PS is using the I: drive when it's not configured to do so..?
    thanks,
    ...rob

Thanks for the quick (and helpful) reply. I think you're on the right track; the 'Photoshop Temp' file is in the right place, and the MVM files are only created when I'm running liquify (and perhaps other plugins as referred to in the post you mentioned).
I tried creating a c:\Temp as suggested but the files still go in a 'random' place. Disconnecting the FAT drive means liquify works for me now as they are going to an NTFS drive but it would still be nice to decide where they go.
I've not come across Mondo before, and google isn't coming up with anything interesting. Do you know where I can find any info on it?
    thanks,

  • My g5 keeps asking for scratch disk...

when i try to open fce, my g5 askes me for my scratch disk, i have the option to reset it or find it. if i pick reset and set up new scratch disk, it goes back to the same window. I cant get it to open fce?
    what do i do?

It should be Mac OS Extended, Juornaling can be either on or off. Most hard drives are formatted for windows use and won't work right on a Mac.
Go to Applications>Utilities>Disc Utility. Select the external in the left payne of the window, choose the one slightly offset to the right (there are two disc names). Then in the ERASE section of the main window click the ERASE button (the one next to First Aid. In the Volume Format there are options, choose Mac OS Extended, give the external a NAME and hit ERASE (the one next to Security Options). The drive will be ready for use.
I hope this is a brand new drive?
If you already have some files on this drive you should back them up before this operation or they will be gone.

  • Does anyone know if running Photoshop thru a external SSD (using firewire) as a scratch disk, on a imac early 2008- make photoshop any faster doing tasks?

Has anyone tried this and if so, was there a noticable difference in photoshop doing its various tasks?  Again, its a imac early 2008, and I looking to use a firewire to attach a Solid State Drive to use as the scratch disk. I am maxed out a 6gb ram.
    Thanks

    CanadianBear
KiltedTim's right of course. You seem to have adequate RAM.
I would ask you if this sluggishness is NEW?  If so, what has changed that you can identify? Updates or upgrades? New software etc?
What kind of tasks? Any operation on a big image is processor heavy, but you have the RAM so scratch disk is the right direction. What is your 'History' preference in PShop? Keep that as small as you can afford to. Save often. Keep as few images open as possible - each image has its own History. Save often.
For scratch info on an image, choose that from the 'triangle' pop menu at the bottom of the document window. That seems a good way to tell if scratch disks are even at fault.

  • Use ext. harddrive for time machine or just as additional storage?

I was wondering, given the problems some people have had with TM, should I maybe just use it to store stuff and free up space on my laptop, or can I use one drive for both my TM backups as well as additional storage?

    Mark_Clemons wrote:

First, take what you read here with a grain (or large block) of salt. This is the ER for Time Machine, and no more representative of the average user's experience than your local bricks-and-mortar ER is of the health of your community. Second, most of the problems here are either misunderstandings of how TM works and how to use it; or hardware problems that would be the same with any backup app.
should I maybe just use it to store stuff and free up space on my laptop, or can I use one drive for both my TM backups as well as additional storage?
You can do both, but if you do, your best bet is to partition the drive so TM has it's own, exclusive partition. And TM can back-up the other partition. See item 5 in the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum for instructions.
Still, this isn't a very good solution, as both the original and copies of those files will be on the same physical disk drive: when (not if) it fails, you may lose both. So you may want to archive those files to DVDs instead of (or in addition to) TM.

  • Using udev devices for ASM disk on Linux

    Hello all,
I need details related to using udev devices as ASM disk on Linux.
What I want to know is, once i get the list of ASM Disks that are used to create the DiskGroups, based on the path of the Disk (whether /dev/sdj or /dev/dm-3 or /dev/asm_udev_device, /dev/vx/<vxvm-volume>, /dev/<lvm-volume>) how do i get to know if the device type is a udev device?
I want to know an automated process, so that i can script it out to separate out each device easily.
Please let me know if anyone has expertise on using udev devices with Oracle ASM.
I have referred the link but no much details available http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/pdf/device-mapper-udev-crs-asm%20rh4.pdf
Further, the behavior of udevinfo command is very different across version of Linux. From Suse 10 onwards, udevadm has to be used instead.
    Its confusing to me.
    Please help.

  • PPro CC 2014 freezes upon clicking Browse for scratch disk

    Hi forum.
I just upgraded from CS6 to CC 2014. When I open up one of my many current CS6 projects, CC says it needs to save it as a new CC file, ok no problem.
Then it pops up with scratch disk options, and they are all set to the C:\ by default. When I click Browse, to locate and select my cache drive, Premiere freezes for about 2 minutes. In fact, I thought it froze indefinitely until it unfroze while typing this post
I don't have any drive issues, no disks in the bd rom, no memory cards in the usb card reader, no drives set to sleep....what's causing this?
    Thanks

Thanks for the quick response, Mr. Haugen. So I tried that. It kind of works, and it'll have to do for now just so I can finish up.
Opening up a previous auto-save actually does the same as the main project file I'd been working with. But like I mentioned, if I open a working project file first and then this one, it does allow me to play back. The auto saved one at least let's me make edits and export without freezing. But I still can't switch over to another timeline, otherwise it freezes again. So, problem not really solved, but I'll kind of walk on eggshells as I work just to complete the edit, and then hopefully never have to come back to this project file again if I can't figure out the issue completely.
I'm still open to more suggestions if anyone has them!

  • Using ext monitor for timeline and laptop screen as preview?

is it possible that when i connect my external monitor to my macbook pro i can use the external for the timeline and the laptop screen for the previewing?
    cheers

I'm trying to do this exact same thing and am coming to the conclusion that it is not possible given my setup. I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and a NIVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Graphics Card. I'm running FCS 3 and all media is read from a 1TB Seagate 7200 SATA drive read through a SeriTek 2SM2 PCI card in the Express Slot.
You can easily arrange your monitors to do what you're asking (as outlined above), but the problem is the Graphics Card is not powerful enough to run both monitors and you will experience dropped frames with any HD codecs. I've tried XDCAM, DVCPROHD and ProRes 422 -- all dropped frames immediately. In fact, even if I use the "closed clamshell" mode, so the graphics card is powering ONLY the external monitor, I still get the same dropped frames issue. The only way I can edit or play back without dropped frames is by using NO external monitor whatsoever.
Is this a unique problem for me? Is there a solution to this? Would the new 17 inch i5's with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512MB) be able to power an external monitor?
EDIT: And the External Monitor is a Dell 2408WFP connected through the DVI port.

  • What to use for scratch disk?

I'll be getting a new mac in the coming year, probably either macbook pro or imac. In either case, I'll have a single internal hard drive. I know that I want to get more into Final Cut Express, and am trying to think ahead for my scratch drive purposes.
It seems to me that I will need a fast external disk drive, and that there are two ways to accomplish this. Either through an eSATA connection, or through a RAID product (or both!), so here are my questions:
    1. Should I be more interested in the notebook because it enables me to add an eSATA drive via the express 34 slot?
    2. What about RAID drives such as those offered by g-technology? These also seem to be a way to obtain good disk drive speed through striping. If these are good, then am I just as well off getting something like this and using with an iMac via firewire 800?
    3. Should I get the best of both worlds by looking for an eSATA product with RAID O? Or is this overkill (i.e. would I do fine with just one or the other?)
    Best,
    Corey

    Corey,
FW400 and FW800 both have sufficient bandwidth to handle video demands in Final Cut Express.
Since most modern hard drives can actually deliver more throughput than either Firewire spec, using SATA (or in your case eSATA) will usually give you better performance. FW800 can nominally deliver 80 MB/sec whereas SATA 1.5 can deliver 150 MB/sec and SATA 3G theoretically 300 MB/sec.
There are two situations where you may see a difference 1) if you have a camcorder that conflicts with other Firewire devices connected to your Mac at the same time (like many Canon models) or 2) when you are copying files/folders between drives. I don't think you will see much of a difference in routine editing in FCE.
Regarding Raid 0, imho the answer depends mostly on three questions - 1) have you covered your backup needs? Raid 0 does not provide backup, in fact Raid 0 alone (without some additional backup capability) actually increases the likelihood of data loss over time. 2) Are you doing enough video to need the benefits of RAID striping? 3) Do you have the budget - RAID will cost you quite a bit more than a plain external drive (eSATA and/or Firewire).
I think eSATA is probably the way things are headed in the market and if you have the choice you wouldn't go wrong with an eSATA express card/34 + external eSATA hard drive. Many of these external drives today support both eSATA and Firewire, just make sure that the actual drive inside is a SATA drive and not a PATA drive with an eSATA/FW bridge board.
