Use wrtu54g-tm or wrt54g v.8 as Wireless router?

Hi - already have the wrt54g v.8 as my network router attached to a comcast cable modem. leaving comcast phone for the tmobile@home service and now have their wrtu54g router. any thoughts on the relative performance of these two as routers? eg., should i just replace my existing router with the wrtu54g or should i plug the new tmobile router into the existing router? many thanks.

if you are just going to be using the wrtu54g as a phone adapter then you can connect that to the wrt54g with no problems, you may need to forward some ports on the router as well.
the best recommnedation is to just repalce the main router for the mean time and the wrtu54g function almost the same way. that way you would not have too may device plugged in.

  • Can I use time capsule as nas attached to another wireless router?

my 4 year old time capsule was starting to drop it's connection to the internet intermittently.  so I decided to buy a new linksys ea4500 and that's now setup as my main wireless router.  can I still salvage my time capsule by attaching it to the new linksys router, using ethernet cable, and using it as a NAS drive?  my purpose is to continue using the time capsule as a NAS hdd for time machine backups.
I read somewhere that the time capsule cannot be set up in client mode, so does this mean I can't attach it to non-apple wireless routers?
thanks in advance to anyone who helps

You can connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable to any router that you want. The key is to configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode.
Here is an example from a recent post a few minutes ago using a 2-Wire router:

  • WRT54GS linkage question/Netgear wireless router add-on

My house has a wired Linksys setup and my roommates and I wanna add wifi to it. Question is: Can EFAH05W EtherFast® 10/100 5-port Auto-Sensing Hub be linked up to WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster or WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router or WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router, so we can have wifi and have more then four 10/100 ports with wifi access for laptops?
    Our current configuration: EFAH05W EtherFast® 10/100 5-port Auto-Sensing Hub + BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch connected to BEFCMU10 Cable Modem with USB and Ethernet Connections
I figure with our current configuration, all that is needed is the WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point.
Also, I got a Netgear WGR614 v6 54 Mbps Wireless Router for free from Dell when I bought my laptop. Is there a way of connecting it to my households current configuration as a wireless access point? I tried connecting it to my cat5 plug in my room, but can't get anything to work but I do see activity on my network connection.Message Edited by DKSquall on 09-02-200601:54 AM

You can connect it this way:BEFCMU10 Cable Modem with USB and Ethernet Connections connected to  BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch then connect your  Netgear WGR614 v6 54 Mbps Wireless Router.
Your WGR614 v6 will be the access point for the network.
You can start with that thought for your network setup.

  • I am using BT Broadband home hub and want to use my time machine - Can I turn the wireless router off in TM?

    Hi,
I have BT home hub which is now my main router in the house.  I also have Apple TV which works off the router and a network adapter around the house which is perfect for all my needs.  However, I also have a time machine but haven't used it for a while now as it's internal router overrides my current network which causes problems.
Being that i'm not very 'technical' I was hoping someone could give me a  'guide for dummies' instruction on how to turn off the wireless signal inside my time capsule without messing up the BT router?
    Many thanks in advance
    Alex

    Thanks guys,
Sorry, just to clarify, I need to connect the ethernet cable to my home hub and my TC first before i can do this?
And once i've done this will my stuff be backed up via the cable or wireless?
I know these are probably very stupid questions but like I said, i'm a div when it comes to this stuff!

  • Can I use an Airport Extreme as a modem and wireless router?

I realize this shows my ignorance, but I am wondering if I need to lease my isp's (Comcast) modem or if I can use and Airport Extreme instead.  Thanks for your help.

AirPort Extreme is a router only.....no modem on board.....so you will need a modem to work with the AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to access the Internet.

  • How do i use a tc when i already have a wireless router

I have a wireless network set up in my house.  I want to add a time capsule for data storage and backup.  Do I have to plug the time capsule into the internet modem?  I already have all ports full.

Yes, you do unless you want it to be very slow. You could purchase a switch, Netgear is a good brand of switch.

  • MBP crashes WRT54GS wireless router

I have a new MacBook Pro, which I can't get to work with my wireless router, a LinkSys WRT54GS. In my debug of the problem, I tried cabling the MBP directly to my DSL modem which works fine. Then I cabled the MBP to the WRT54GS (which is cabled to my DSL modem). After 2-3 minutes of switching between various websites (using Safari), the connection goes down, and the wireless router is dead - it must be power cycled to recover. The WRT54GS has always worked (wired and wireless) with our Dell XP laptops. Since I'm seeing the router crash when connected via ethernet cable, it's not a wireless (AirPort) issue, but must be something IP related. Anyway, others are seeing this also (see http://forums.macnn.com/92/networking/305303/mysterious-crashing-with-linksys-wr t54g/). Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Safari Browser

My MBP is also crashing the router, Mines a netgear 108mps I have tried everything, disabled every feature, on both the laptop and the router, dropped its speed to the slowest possiable upgraded to the latest firmware everything. I'm sick of this. I'm heading to the Apple store right now and buying an airport extreme, and see if I have problems with it also. if so, then I'm going to have them replace the hardward in my laptop. I have written more about this in other threads and it's not limited to just my router but local hotspots freeze if I try to use them... this is an issue with the laptop for sure, but I don't want apple to try and use the excuse that I'm mixing hardware hence the proble.. I'm going to try using all their stuff and finish the testing that way. Sad that we have to deal with this. I have also updates all the drivers on the MBP so everything as current as it could be.. will keep everyone posted.

  • Anyone used Airport Express as bridge w. wireless router other than Apples?

I have my QS 867 hardwired to my highspeed modem and a Netgear 624GT wireless router attached. My PB has been having trouble with the signal in certain spots due to all the jazz about the alum interfering w. the antenna. When I try to setup the Airport Express with my Netgear network and use the Airport as a bridge/range extender, it does not recogize the Netgear router. It seems to specify in the instructions that you MUST use an Airport Extreme Base Station. Is this true? Has anyone used the Express as a bridge with a wireless router other than the Base Station?

At one point in time I did have an Airport Express working in WDS over WEP with the Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7130. It's unsupported and difficult to get setup. It tends to causes them to lock up and need to be rebooted.
We ended up just dropping the Belkins and getting more Airport Expresses as the Belkins couldn't support doing WDS over WPA (which we've since moved too).

  • Using a WRT54G as a second wireless and wired router on a LAN

I have setup a WRT54G as a second wired and wireless router on my local LAN.
The WAN wired side of the WRT54G is setup completely DHCP. It gets IP 192.168.1.104 most of the time. (I have used a PC with DHCP on theis ethernet wire and it gets to the internet OK).
The LAN side of the WRT54G is setup as 192.168.20.1 and all wireless and wired devices connecting to it get ips of 192.168.20.xxx and communicate between them selfs perfectly.  However, none of them can get to the internet through the WRT54G.  What have I done wrong?
    Thank You

I guess your WRT54G is not connected to Internet directly, but it's connected to another router that has Internet access.
If this is the case, you can configure this device as access point/hub only in order to get Internet access from the other router. Ignore the WAN connection on this WRT54G, just connect both router's LAN port with crossover cable.. After that configure the WRT54G's wireless setting. You can get more detailed info on how to do it in following article:
Quick Guide to Configure Wireless Router as Access Point
    Hope helps..

  • Using a WRT54G v5 For Isolated Wireless

    Hello,
I am wondering if it is possible to use a WRT54G for the following.  I have a cable modem/router combo that is attached to a larger network.  Can I attach a WRT54G to the cable modem/router's LAN ports and provide isolated internet access via the WRT54G's Wireless?  I have attempted to set this up.  However in practice I have run in to a problem.  Though users on the WRT54G can not browse by FQDN, they can still browse devices on the WAN side of the WRT54G network via IP address.  Is there a way to restrict this from the WRT54G?
    Thank You.

Who is your Internet Service Provider ?
Yes, you can configure WRT54G with cable modem .
You can follow this link to configure the cable modem with the router.

  • Using WRT54G and WET11 with another router as the Gateway

I have a wired network in the house with access to the Internet through a router on the 2nd floor. I connect a ReplayTV DVR in the basement to the network with a Cat5 cable running across the floor between the DVR and a switch. I'd like to replace that with a wireless solution.
I have at my disposal one WET11 bridge and two WRT54G routers. Neither of those routers is the one connecting the house to the cable modem. Is there a way I can connect one of the WRT54G routers to a switch in the basement and have it talk to the WET11 connected to the DVR on the other side of the basement?

I made some progress, but then ran into a couple of snags. I'm not routing with the WRT54G so I connect it to a switch through one of the 4 ports that is not the one labeled Internet. The network looks like this:
    Cable Modem --> Netgear Router --> Switch --> WRT54G(port 1)
    Laptop --> WRT54G(port 4)
With that cable arrangement I was able to log in to the WRT54G's administration page from my laptop, give the WRT54G a name and change it's IP address to 192.168.1.251. I left the subnet as 255.255.255.0.I also started to configure some other settings, but I did not write them down. I was able to access the Internet from the laptop at that time.
I was also able to move the cable going from the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G with the WET11 Ethernet Bridge and could access the Internet. And, I was able to remove the bridge, turn on the laptop's wireless capability and access the Internet through a wireless connection to the WRT54G.
I tried to access the WRT54G's admin page wirelessly, but was not able to get to the login screen. I ran out of time and set everything aside for a week. When I got back to it, I was unable to access the WRT54G's loging screen. I can still connect the laptop to port 4 on the WRT54G and reach the Internet, but I cannot do so using the bridge.
Is there some tool I can use to determine the IP address of the WRT54G? I tried resetting (using the button on the back), and I tried several IP addresses in addition to the one I'm pretty sure I used. I'm assuming that I'm trying to log in using the wrong IP address.
I have a second WRT54G that I can still log on to. However, I don't want to do anything with it until I understand what I did wrong with the first one. (Both of them are version 6.)
Another snag is that I was never able to get the setup program to find the WET11. It claimed that it couldn't find the one I had plugged into the laptop's Ethernet port, even though I was able to connect to the Internet using that bridge to the WRT54G. However, that does not work anymore.
Pointers as to what went wrong would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Can I use my WRT54G wireless router as a signal range extender?

Hello, I have a couple wireless routers in my home, and basically I guess I can only use one as the main wireless router.
I'd really like to know if I can use one, specifically my linksys WRT54G wireless G router as just a range extender for the wireless signal from the main wireless router. It would save me a bunch so that I wouldn't need to go buy an entirely new device for this. If there is ANY way.
    please help
    thank you

You can connect as many WRTs as you like to your network if you wire them together. They create a big roaming network then (or several different networks if you want that). You have to set up the "internal" WRTs as access points, though, i.e. you don't connect them through the Internet port to your network but through a numbered LAN port. Also make sure to turn off the DHCP server on the internal WRTs and to assign them a free LAN IP address in your LAN (usually 192.168.1.2,3,4 will work).
In a roaming network there is no main router. All wireless routers are the same in this respect. Your "main" router is only defined by the fact, that it hosts the internet connection. But from the side of the wireless is does not matter. For a roaming network, make sure to assign all access points the identical SSID and wireless security settings. The only difference in the wireless settings should be the channels, where you should use different ones if possible. 1,6, and 11 are non-overlapping and thus are best to be used.
O.K. This was with a wired connection. If you actually need a wireless bridge, i.e., connect to access points through a wireless connection without any wired connection between them, then you have two options:
    1. Buy access points like the WAP54G or wireless bridges like the WET54G. They have can be configured for wireless bridging. A WRT54G with standard Linksys firmware does not have this capability.
    2. Get a 3rd party firmware for your WRT54G if there is one available for your hardware version. I think not all hardware versions support 3rd party firmware. Check on the label underneath the router to see what hardware version you have. Search for "WRT54G" on wikipedia. You'll find an article about the different hardware versions, which 3rd party firmware projects exist and where to download it. 3rd party firmware usually adds functions like wireless bridging to a WRT. I know HyperWRT+Thibor works well on my WRT54Gv2. Remember, however, that uploading a 3rd party firmware will void your warrenty...

  • Configure WRT54G Wireless Router with PUBLIC IP address and use DHCP for internal computers

Hi,I have an Internet online service with 5 public IP addresses. The router and the AP are connected to a switch. I would like to configure a WRT54G wireless router with one of this IP public Address and use DHCP (with private ip address)  for the computers that will connect to the AP. As the AP is connected to the switch it is possible that other wired computers that are connected to the same switch can obtain an IP address from the DHCP ?
     Thansk in advance

Thanks for your help. Please correct me if Im wrong. After connecte the equipments the way you suggestI setup a static IP address (The public IP)  in the WRT54GI enable DHCP in the WRT54G with a range from 10.10.0.100 to 10.10.0.200 (as an example) The gateway is the Public IP address right ? How do I route the 10.10.0.x addresses to the public IP address. Thansk again

  • How to use modem port on WRT54GS

Hi,  I have a network like this:
ADSL -> THOMSON wired modem -> LinkSys SR2016 wired switch -> LinkSys WRT54GS wired/wireless router
My problem is with the connecction between the SR2016 -> WRT54GS.  As you probably will know the WRT54GS has 5 ports, one is called 'INTERNET' and the others are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4. According to the documentation of the WRT54GS it should be possible to configure the internet-port (the 5th connector on the back-side) so that it can be connected to another router.I can't get this to work.
My current workaround is to sacrifice one of the 4 router ports to connect to the SR2016. This works well, but takes up 1 wireless channel.
I would like to hear if there are any tips or experiences in this forum to get this working.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If the purpose of the WRT is to provide a wireless access point for your LAN (and not create two separated and protected LANs) then you have to connect the WRT through one of the numbered LAN ports. You also have to turn off the DHCP server on the WRT.

  • WRT54G & FIOS Wireless Router Used Together - POSSIBLE???

Hello guys, I pretty much drew a picture of what I wanted to do so hopefully you guys will understand me much easier. Sorry, I am new here, so I like to introduce myself, I'm Mo. I'm pretty good with computer but learining more and more about networking. I just recently got FIOS in my house. It comes with a wireless router but problem w/ my basement is that I cannot get good connection on the 3rd floor. So my speed is really really slow.
I wanted to install the Linksys router to help that. Am I able to hook up my linksys router and use it as a "hotspot" for my 3rd floor? I get the connection from the Verizon router then goes into the 16 port switch I have installed, which sents wired connection to each rooms of the house. So I took my linksys router and plugged into one of those rooms and tried to get connection from the switch but didn't work.
Is there a way of doing this? Here's a picture I drew up. Thank you!

Yes, it should be possible to do what you have described.  However, we need more information.
Please connnect your computer, by ethernet cable, directly to your FIOS wireless router.  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connnection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   Post all the results.
Also please state the make and exact model number of your FIOS wireless router.
