Used "Merge clip" after rough cut, need to replace clips in timeline

I made a rough cut for a sequence I'm working on using just the embedded camera audio from the takes.  Now that the roughcut is done I've started Merging the external audio source with the clips.
What I need to know is if it is possible to replace the clips currently in my timeline with the new merged clips without having to go through and re-assemble the  entire timeline.
I read somewhere that alt-dragging should give me a green plus sign which I can use to replace the old clip with the new one but I am having no luck with that.

In the Project Panel, click the flyout menu; that's the little stack o' pancakes thing in the upper right corner of the panel. Select "Metadata Display." In the search box, type "usage"--this will reveal the Video Usage and Audio Usage metadata labels. Check those to add them, and hit OK; they'll now be added to the columns in the Project Panel. Now, you can sort on those columns to filter by usage--the unused clips won't have a number associated with that column. Select them all, and if you really want to purge them from the drive, hit Ctrl/Cmd+Delete--that will remove the media from the drive.
If you just want to get rid of the clips, Project > Remove Unused will do that.

  • Can i restore a clip after I cut it?

I have multiple vidoo clips with multiple cameras that i have matched up with audio. I made some cuts that sould not have, I would like to modify the entire clip, but not it has been chopped into smaller ones. Is there a way i can restore these small clips back into the original large one without having realign everything all over again?
I hope you know what I mean. Advise would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well, in reality, you "master Clip"has not really been Cut. It only appears that it has, and there are some instructions added to the XML Project file (PRPROJ).
If you do not want those "sub-Clips" showing any more, just Delete them (Lasso them to Select and hit Delete), leaving a gap. Now, Click-drag on the Tail of the first part, and drag it to fill the gap. Done. You are back to the un-Cut version. Everything is still there.
Note: I have use two terms, master Clip and sub Clip, that have other, official meanings in PrPro, so do not confuse these. Here, I am referring to the original Clip, that you dragged to the Timeline as a master Clip, and not a Master Clip. When you Cut, you produced sub-Clips here, and not Sub-Clips. Those terms are for example only. Just to be clear, as I do not want you heading to the Help Files and getting horribly confused.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I'd just leave the Cuts, as they will be meaningless, unless you Click-drag on the Head, or Tail at the Cut. Having a single Clip Cut into tiny pieces has no real meaning, until you do something WITH those Cuts.

I noticed another Event folder for the same clips so I "Merged" them. Still nothing. I've had nothing but problems with the waaay overdue project. I really need some help, please!

  • PLZ  HOW I CAN T  USE THE COMPRESSOR AFTER FINAL CUT PRO X  WHY???????

HOW I CAN EXPORT MY VIDEO FROM FINAL CUT PRO X TO COMPRESSOR TO YOUTUBE???

You don't need to use Compressor. In FCP, Share>You Tube and then choose the quality setting you want.
Alternatively you can use Compressor to give you more control over your settings. If so, choose Share and either  export a master file and bring that into Compressor…or SHare>Add Destination>Compressor settings.
    Good luck.

  • Using HDV clips from Final Cut in a 4:3 iMovie Timeline

I'm trying to use HDV clips in a standard def, 4:3 iMovie file. I export them as full quality QT clips out of my FCP timeline - to the desktop - then when I drag them into my iMovie file - they squish instead of letterboxing. I've tried everything but can't get it to work. Some clips import with the letterbox and others import anamorphic style. Very strange.
It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension - but I can't get that with the QT clips I make in FCP - when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down. I also tried converting them in Quicktime - but that isn't working. Any ideas?
Again - just trying to keep my 16:9 clips in 16:9 and not squishing them to be 4:3. I'd be happy getting my QT clips from FCP to be .dv files even.....
    Thanks

It looks like iMovie likes the .dv file extension
Yes, a correctly 4:3 or 16:9 flagged .dv imports best and most predictably to iMovie
when I use DVStream as an export the quality goes way down.
Of course there is downscaling when converting HD to plain lower res DV. Also remember that QT Player by default shows low-res preview of .dv -- you have to turn on HQ display to see all quality.

  • I can't use iMovie '09 after my hard drive was replaced

My hard drive crashed about two months ago and since then I can open iMovie 09' (version 8.0.6) but it won't allow me to do anything once it is opened.  Under the File tab only the options "optimize video", "import from camera" and "import are live - the rest are grayed out.  I have seen the suggestion to remove plist files from the library, but I can't actually see any there that have iMovie in the name.  I have verified and repaired disc permissions.  I have updated software and reinstalled the applications install DVD.
I think that I had mountain lion installed before the crash and that I am now back to 10.6.8 (lion?)  - I'm not sure if this is relevant.
    Thanks for any advice.

    I can't see backups for a disk/partition that's no longer connected

  • Rough Cut Issues in Premiere

    REALLY FRUSTRATED!
So I send my rough cut to Premiere, then I drag my rough cut to the timeline, all seems to be fine. But if I delete that rough cut from the timeline it is no longer available to bring into the timeline again, it is just blank and error message "No content in sequence In/Out Range".
I've tried it with the "write XMP ID to files on import" checked and unchecked. I don't even know if this has anything to do with the rough cut, ugh!
Also, if I rearrange the bins I sent from Prelude in any manner whatsoever the rough cut is lost!
So frustrated I am beginning to think I have wasted months of time making rough cuts in Prelude,

    Hey Michael,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon   Sorry, I have to give you links to imgur for pictures of my desktop. I tried everything people suggested, but I still cannot get the insert link or insert photo on the forum to work, ugh!
The problem I was having yesterday is that the rough cut sequence file remains in the Premiere Pro Project Panel after deleting it from the timeline, but does not contain anything once it is deleted from the timeline, the thumbnail becomes blank/black and the rough cut footage cannot be brought back into the same or a different timeline without going back to Prelude and resending the rough cut and associated footage to Premiere. I was getting "No content in sequence In/Out Range".
    http://i.imgur.com/74uBHvI.jpg
However, this morning I start up my computer, reopen Prelude and start Premiere project from scratch. Then I sent the same rough cut as yesterday to Premiere. This time when I drag the rough cut to the timeline Premiere makes a new duplicate sequence. That did not happen yesterday. I have no idea why as all settings are identical.
    http://imgur.com/L0KirVB
*Note I put the additional sequence on the timeline cause I wanted to see if it was identical.
So, my next step was to delete the rough cut from the timeline and bring it back into the timeline. I get the same message "No content in sequence In/Out Range".
Then I repeated everything again, only this time if I double click the rough cut to bring it into the timeline instead of dragging it. It does not make a duplicate sequence.
    http://i.imgur.com/YlfvQ2h.jpg
Then I delete the rough cut in the timeline and try to bring it back in to the timeline and get the "No content in sequence In/Out Range" message. So in order to have access to that rough cut again I have to go back to Prelude and have it send the roughcut and associated footage back into Premiere.
    http://i.imgur.com/iQ9ozDY.jpg
All the footage used in the rough cut sent over to Premiere from Prelude is still accessible in the project panel after deleting the rough cut from the timeline. It is the rough cut itself that is no longer available once it is ingested into the timeline and then deleted.
My real concern in working with my rough cuts from Prelude is the stability of the rough cut. Once I start working within the roughcut footage and I decide to add, edit or delete clips am I going to have issues. If I have to start going back to Prelude to resend rough cuts then this will be a huge issue and it would just be better for me to start with my original footage as opposed to the rough cuts.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of the problem. If you need any more info or if you need to do remote access to my system please let me know. Thanks again!

  • Rough cut on iMovie

Hi I have got a quick project to complete..
I am planning to have my rough cut on iMove then finalise it in FCP5.
I know there might be some problem when I import iMovie clips into FCP... but not clear of what they are.
I will be very greatful if anyone can give me a quick outline of what I should be aware....
Thank you so much in advance.
OH, the only reason I will be doing the cut in iMovie is because, at my client's environment, there is only iMovie to use and I have to work together during importing clips & the rough cut stage.
    PowerBook G4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I highly doubt this will work. MANY reasons why:
-iMovie projects cannot be opened by FCP
-iMovie DOES NOT CAPTURE TIMECODE. That is HUGE for offline/online edits
-iMovie captures .dv files...very different than .mov files...again...no timecode.
And this footage will have to be rendered in FCP.
-iMovie edits destructively (or it did last time I looked) and doesn't allow for re-use of shots
In fact, I cannot think of one good reason...ANY reason to do what you are suggesting. It just plain won't work.
Buy Final Cut Express...or does FCE do timecode? I know you can't log and capture, and that it works with DV only...but not sure about the TC issue.
    ANYWAYS. No. Don't do this.
#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...

  • IMovie08 as a rough cut editor for FCE4?

    Hi All,
(I know there was a reference by Euisung Lee on this topic but no replies are currently allowed hence this new post...)
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5317430
I'm interested in the experience of anyone using iMovie08 as a rough cut editor for FCE4.
Why do I want to do this?
    * I love the sheer speed of putting together videos, even lengthy ones, in iM08.
    * Also the integration with the iApps
    * Love having an accessible skimmable library of all my DV
What I can't really live with in iM08...
    * The poor titling facilities
    * I've been trying the titling workaround noted in Karsten Shluter's website (ie. import a semi transparent TIFF or PNG from Photoshop and drag it onto clips). This works great except for one of my key projects where iM08 accepts the image file as normal, but doesn't display any overlayed image in the viewer.
    * Also concerned about the loss in quality on export (for DV files)
So...I'm thinking about the following workflow...
    a) import DV to iM08 (no loss in quality)
    b) within iM08, perform rough cut video selections, and intersperse with image files from iPhoto (gives a documentary feel with video + stills)
    c) export XML to FCE4
...I understand in this step that audio, transitions, KBE, adjustments, titles etc is lost in this process, but I'm assuming that the cuts and also the interspersed photos are retained
    d) so then in FCE4 perform the titling, KBE on the photos, edit the audio and do any effects such as slowmo etc...
I'm hoping this is a 'best of both worlds' solution in that I keep the speed factor in pulling together the backbones of the project, but also gain the functionality of FCE4 for the other components.
    My questions
    1. Does this work effectively - has anyone tried it? Any traps which would make it more cumbersome than I'm anticipating?
    2. Does FCE4 need to re-import or convert the original DV clips referenced by the iM08 XML. Does this duplicate the source files? Is there any loss of quality in the files then used in FCE4.
    3. Following from #2, will the export quality from FCE4 be superior to what I'm currently getting in iM08? (Noting that the majority of my output needs to end up as a DVD...not yet living in Steve J's DVD-less world yet)
    4. Has anyone run into the same titling/image overlay problems as I'm having with iM08.
A big thanks to the regulars who provide a huge source of great info here for us all...

    Hi Joey,
thanks for appreciating my post ..
.. do you think using iM08 as a rough cut editor in this way could work?
I guess, that is a way..
when iM08 araised, in one of my posts, I said, skimming would be on my wishlist for FCE4 .. skimming is, imho, excellence in UI design.. a 'switchable' timelne in FCE (skimming mode/timeline mode) would really speed up editing.. (if speed is an issue )
.. it appears that this workflow would also get me around the iM08 export quality issue.
as far as I understand the process, there's no loss in quality in this process.. the xml is just 'in-/out data' (like Midi in audio processing) and you transfer/clone the raw imports from iMEvents to FCEproject... I'm not indepth will this workflow, I guess, you double the data = hdd space issues.. but, +you never have enough space while doing video+ ...
.. It sounds like putting KBEs into photos is harder in FCE than iM08
I'd like to phrase 'different' ..
less intuitive, but with much more options (e.g. rotation, transparencies, multi pic, drop shadows ...) and with more control (e.g. no automatic 'smoothing'/acceleration as in KB/iM, creating 'paths' of movement .. .)
with some craftmanship, you could create a slideshow looking like those 'Themes' in iMHD6/iDVD ...
fo sure harder, but imho .. better ...
.. _I assume_ that FCE4 would operate in the same way as FCE3.5
    me too, vers3.5. here, no hands-on on vers4 ...

  • Large size of video clip after drag and drop

I'm putting together an iMovie. I'm dragging very small clips from one pane (on one hard drive) to another pane (on another hard drive). The move is successful, but the size of the moved clip is just too large.
For example, I'll have a 20 second clip that I drag -- let's say it's called clip06.dv and it will take up 4 or 5 GB of space on the HD. Needless to say ,I'll never get anything done this way. Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Alan
Busily working on the son's bar mitzvah video

Here is the trick I have found to reduce the size. After having cut and reordered your clips as wanted, with all transitions and titles, but without sound, export them to iDVD.
In iDVD, choose a basic theme without animated title and save an image of the film on your hard disc. This creates a .img file which size is less than 10 times smaller than the original iMovie file. Double click this file: you will find two folders. Open the VIDEO_TS folder and look for files VTS0101.VOB, VTS0102.VOB, etc.
Go back to iMovie, open a new movie and drag the .VOB files in it. Et voila ! The operation takes a quite long time, but you will obtain a few clips with the minimum possible size. You can then throw away the original oversized iMovie file and also the .img file.
Note that QuickTime and iMovie needs the MPEG-2 Playback module (19.99$ at Apple Store) to read the .VOB files.
    Hope this help.

  • After using Merge Clips in CS6, the resulting file now has two audio tracks

    Hey guys,
I'm running into a weird problem after using the Merge Clips option. I have my video and audio selected, I've already moved the audio so they're both synced. It looks like this:
Then I use Merge Clips and pull the new file into a new sequence which in turn looks like this:
I checked the audio channels for both and apparently the merged file separated the left and right audio channels into two separate streams as opposed to using the single stream for both channels like the original.
Anyway to prevent it from doing this?

    So according to Adobe's website: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS2bacbdf8d487e582-73725e6a12e5a6165d0-7f ff.html
At the very bottom they list limitations, one of which being "Merged clip audio results in mono track audio only."
Which I was familiar with before posting this. It doesn't seem however that the two tracks are mono it looks like they are two separate stereo tracks. If I mute one I still get audio in both speakers even though I muted the "right" track.
Here's what they look like in the audio mixer
The original only has the left most track.
I guess the only thing to do is just deal with it or render out each clip uncompressed to have that single audio channel.

  • Trim mode 'wrong frame' problems when using merged clips

    Hello there,
We are having a problem with the trim mode on FCP 6.0.4. We're working with 1080psf 24 Apple ProRes 422 material, captured using a AJA Kona card.
The sound and picture were recorded separately, and synced manually (by creating merged clips) in FCP.
When we go into the trim window, it shows a different frame as the incoming or outgoing frame on some clips. In other words it's not actually showing us the real frame before or after the cut. Instead it shows a frame that's half a second back, for example. When we preview the cut, it cuts in the 'right' place, but when we pause and try to fine cut the transition using +1 keys (or trim back/forward keys), it shows us the wrong frame. When we preview it again, the cut is still in the 'right' place - not the frame represented when it's stilled. This makes using trim mode nigh-on impossible since it's not actually showing you the frames you're cutting.
Are there any patches or workarounds to fix this issue? I can't find any fixes on forums/help sites or the FCP manual.
Tried trashing prefs, repairing disk permissions and all the usual maintenance stuff!
Exporting new Quicktimes of the merged clips and then re-importing them is not an option, as they need to be timecode accurate to be recaptured for the online and vfx work.
Any advice would be much appreciated - if no solutions exist we'll have to switch everything over to Avid, and that'd be a mammoth job.
    Many thanks in advance!

You may not be zoomed in enough in the Timeline window, the more you zoom in, the more detailed edit you can perform. Zoom out too much, and you won't have the sensitivity.

  • How can i use cropping  in imovie 11 on the clips that i cut away with and still put it in HD

    Hi there,
I do have one problem dealing with the videos I make in my iMovie 11: I want to set my videos to HD using Quicktime. I already know how to do that. But, the problem is that I use cropping and ken burn effects on my vids when I use cutaway (a really major problem since I use this most frequently in my videos), picture-in-picture, and side-by-side. After I exported my vids to Quicktime, I wanted to look at them. But, for some reason when I was watching my iMovie videos on Quicktime, it included every little bit of my clips. It didn't crop the clips at all. It showed everything. I'm kind of upset about this because I have projects due this month and I really didn't want part of some clips to show. I really needed them cropped and/or ken-burned. Plus, I need to set them on HD.
Whenever I played it back in the iMovie preview, my videos played exactly as I wanted it to play. The cutaway clips, picture-in-picture clips, and the side-by-side clips were cropped and ken-burned just as I wanted it to be. But, on my Quicktime, it didn't do the same.
Here's the procedure that I use to export my videos:
Step 1:  I finish making my video with the cutaway clips, picture-in-picture clips, and side-by-side clips already cropped and/or ken-burned.
Step 2:  I click on "Share." Then, I click on "Export using Quicktime."
Step 3:  I click on "Options."
Step 4:  I click on "Settings." Then, I make sure the Compression Type is H.264, Frame Rate is Current fps, Key Frames is on Every 24 frames, Frame Reordering is checked, Compressor Quality is on Best, Encoding is on Best Quality (Multi-pass), and the Data Rate is on Automatic. After this is done, I click "OK."
Step 5:  I click on "Size." I make sure the Dimensions is on 1920 x 1080 HD (mainly because I really need it in HD for doing projects for school and uploading other videos to Youtube, Dailymotion, and other sites). I also click on Preserve aspect ratio using: Letterbox. Then, I click "OK."
Step 6:  After I set the settings for Sound, I make sure that Prepare for Internet Streaming is on Fast Start. Then, I press "OK."
Step 7:  I save my file name and export to Quicktime.
Step 8:  Once it already exports to Quicktime, I open the file and look at my video that I just made. (At this point, I realized that my videos that were used as cutaways, picture-in-pictures, and side-by-side clips didn't show the parts I cropped or ken-burned on. It practically showed every little part of that clip that I use those effects on. I really wanted it to be cropped or ken-burned as much as possible.)
So, that's my problem that I have at the moment. I really needed it cropped and/or ken-burned and set the video on HD. I would really appreciate your thoughts on how I should fix this problem.

On one of my clips it says:
Format:  Apple Intermediate Codec, 1280 x 720, Millions
                 16-bit integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Current Size: 1280 x 720 pixels (Actual)
    Another clip I use says:
Format:  Apple Intermediate Codec, 960 x 540, Millions
                 16-bit integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Current Size:  960 x 540 pixels (Actual)

TThose aren't bins. Those are just groupings based on when the content was created or any other selected parameter. Use the action popup in the toolbar tho change the setting.
