UserEventAgent

Hi all. I was trying to figure out why my computer won't sleep when it's scheduled to, and I came across this item in Activity Monitor: "UserEventAgent(not responding)". It's highlighted in red, takes no CPU cycles, but lists about 800 MB in virtual memory. It's always there, regardless of restart, quitting all apps, priv reset, etc. I don't know if this is causing my problem- when I quit it in Activity Monitor, nothing seems to happen. Does anyone know what this is, and how to get rid of it? Thanks.
John

I just had the same problem. 'Usereventagent' wasn't responding in Activity Monitor.
I noticed it was interfering with iTunes and other apps.
It began after I installed 'Steermouse' a program to re-key buttons on a Bluetooth mouse.
Using info found on a google search, I deleted the following file: BluetoothUserAgent-Plugin.plugin (System>>Library>>Usereventplugins) I also uninstalled 'Steermouse'. Problem solved.
I'm still using my Bluetooth mouse (and headphones) without incident.

That's not an error. 184 indicates the process ID for the UserEventAgent process. What you're seeing is that it's crashing. Repair permissions and restart. If that doesn't fix it, manually download and install the COMBO update, repair permissions, and restart.

  • UserEventAgent won't let me eject my external hard drive, and other problems

I'm running a MacBook Pro (2008-ish model) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 with 4Gb of RAM and 750Gb of internal HD (the original 250Gb seriously cramped my style), and UserEventAgent is acting all weird.
Because of that old 250Gb HD, I was in the habit of storing files I didn't need at the time on an external hard drive, a LaCie 500Gb connected by FW800 (probably not relevant). And lately, whenever I plug it in, I can't eject it without forcing it to eject.
Using the "list open files" command and searching for that drive [ lsof | grep LaCie ] reveals that UserEvent drops an immediate hook in it for some reason. This connection is immediate, and short of force-quitting UserEventAgent in Activity Monitor at the exact moment I try to eject that drive, I can't disconnect it properly without forcing it or shutting down completely.
In fact, looking at UserEventAgent's open files and ports in Activity Monitor, something just plain doesn't look right:

The repetitions (I mean seriously, who needs three open connections to /dev/null?), and the multiple instances of "count=0, state=0", suggest that UserEventAgent is getting bad info from somewhere.
If I can track down what's making UserEventAgent imitate an overly amorous octopus, maybe I can straighten out this mess. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that this list has picked up funky smells and bad habits from all the earlier versions of OS X I've run.
    Help? Please?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • UserEventAgent(Not Responding)  Process ID 369 ?

    What is this?
I have been getting it since I bought the computer.
In the activity monitor it is showing as 3 threads/3.71 Real Memory/856.23MB Virtual memory
I was told it would be fixed in a upgrade.
Anyone else see it in Activity Monitor?
    Is it slowing performance?
whenever I check Activity Monitor- there it is and I force quit it. It just comes back after a few minutes.
    It bugs me.

OK, I'm just guessing based on my prior experience with this problem. I'm thinking it's caused by the audio software you have installed - Motion, DigiDesign, etc. I think these are part of Pro Tools, right? It's possible that the version involved is not fully compatible, and that's what is causing the problem with UserEventAgent.
You can test this assumption by quitting all those applications and then uninstalling them and any daemons, etc. that they may install including any system extensions they may install. If uninstallers are available use them. If not see:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
Also, disconnect any peripherals associated with the software. Then restart the computer and monitor UserEventAgent. If it doesn't display in red as non-responsive then you know generally what caused the problem. Otherwise, rescan the same information so we can see what's running when all the audio/video stuff is not.
I'm going to hazard a guess it may be the DigiDesign software because they tend to lag a bit behind OS X upgrades. Worse comes to worse you may need to downgrade OS X to the last version known to be compatible. You should also report the issue to the developer.

  • Coreaudiod and UserEventAgent both not responding

I noticed in Activity Monitor showing all process on a clean boot I get both coreaudiod and UserEventAgent both not responding. I though this might be something to do with sound but the funny thing is everything seems ok. Audio and video and the general running of the computer seems to be fine unless i had not looked in activity monitor i probably would not of noticed.
If i quit both processes they dont appear again in red not responding.
But if i start an app or play a sound ot video they both pop back up again as not responding yet the system functions as normal seemingly and sound and audio works fine.
Any Ideas. Sure seems a little strange.

OK fixed it after a bunch of research I found 2 plugins that can ause problems in the
    go to :
    Library\Audio\Plug-Ins folder
I had a folder called HAL which had a plugin for protools which i dont have anyways and i deleted it. Also there is a app called Hear which had a plugin i deleted as well. So basically if you are having similar issues check the various plug-ins in these folders and try removing them The Protools one is a known culprit as well as the Hear one.

  • Mac has become insanely slow : Processes SystemUIServer, UserEventAgent and loginwindow using a lot of memory

I have been using my Mac for for many months without any problem. But recently all of a sudden the Mac became insanely slow.
I opened Activity Manager to see what was happening. For three processes SystemUIServer, UserEventAgent and loginwindow, the memory gradually increases and reaches upto 2 GB for each process. This completely hangs up my Mac.
    I tried the following:
    Restart Mac
    Restart Mac in safe mode
    Manually kill the processes
Remove Date and Time from Menu bar (this was supposed to be the problem for the SysteUIServer process's memory according to many users)
Removed the externally connected keyboard and mouse(some had suggested this for UserEventAgent's memory)
No luck with any of those. The moment I log in, the memory spikes up.
Any idea what on earth is happening? Please help.

Create a new user account with admin status. Log out of your account, then log into the new one. Does your problem stop? If not then boot into Safe Mode. Does the problem stop? Boot normally. Does the problem stop.
If none of the above help, then you have a corrupted system and need to reinstall Lion.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Programs not in dock?!? Must Force Quit/ UserEventAgent!?!

    I recently upgraded to Leopard.
I have had no issues other than SEVERAL programs (itunes, metax, Popcorn 3, etc) don't show up in the dock when they are running..... if they do show up in the dock, when I'm done with the program they won't go away (after closing).
Even a force quit won't get rid of them.
    A restart will!
All of my programs are updated to work with Leopard!
Any suggestions as I'm lost on what to do.
Also I found that I have a UserEventAgent error in the Activity Monitor...
    Any ideas........
    Thanks in advance

WRT to UserEventAgent, search these forums and read the various threads.

  • Finder & UserEventAgent (Not Responding) Leopard 10.5 Upgrade

So I upgraded to 10.5 last night and when I log onto my main admin account everything loads up except for the Finder. I can open applications I already had in my dock before the upgrade and can use system preferences and the lot, but when it comes to the Finder all I get is the spinning rainbow wheel. Funny thing is that I logged into one of my other user accounts and the Finder loads up perfectly and I can use it there but not the case with my main admin account. I've looked into Activity Monitor and it shows both the Finder & UserEventAgent as (Not Responding). I've restarted multiple times and relaunched Finder as well and I still get the same thing. Being me and very confident in Apple's work and my experience with upgrading from Panther to Tiger smoothly, I didn't think about backing up my files.
So now I'm trying to figure out why the Finder won't load and that hopefully I can get past it so that I can back my files up once and for all.
Anyone have any ideas of why this might be happening on my main admin account and not on one of my others?

Same problem here, but I think I know what the problem is...
Most likely Spotlight is re-indexing your entire drive. Click on the Spotlight icon on the right end of your menu bar, and if you are like me, it shows that Spotlight is busy at work.
After about ten minutes My desktop finally came up, although Spotlight is still chugging away.
Oddly, when I first installed last night, everything went smoothly on my first boot. But Cover Flow was pretty choppy, taking a while to move through files and render their previews.
Also, check your available hard drive space. As my indexing is happening right now, it's disappearing rapidly (I installed with about 400MB free, and after ten minutes of indexing it's down to 288 and shrinking.
All in all, this seems to add up to Spotlight work in the background.

  • UserEventAgent hangs

Activity Monitor hightlights it red and says it doesn't respond.
So far I couldn't find any helpful information in the threads here.
Thanks a lot for a hint!
    Peter

You have a third-party application (probably audio related) that is not fully compatible.
In Activity Monitor double-click on the UserEventAgent entry. In the dialog click on the Open Files and Ports tab. Now carefully examine the listed data which should reveal what that third-party item is. You may be looking for an M-Audio file, for example. Or you may find something like SRS Wow or Hear. If so it's this that's causing the problem. Either install the current version of the software or contact the developer about the error and need for an update. Meanwhile don't use the software or don't worry about the problem as it tends to be innocuous.

  • Launchd and UserEventAgent hogging CPU

I've just taken delivery of a new MBPr for work and wanted to set up a second user account to keep my personal stuff separate.
When I log into this account, within minutes the fans start whirring, even though no programmes are running. According to Activity Monitor, launchd and UserEventAgent are using 77% and 48% of the cpu respectively.
When I log out, the problem goes away. I've tried deleting and the account and starting again, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help?

Look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console
Chances are a launch daemon is trying to start and keeps dying, so it is launch again, and again, and again, ....
The Console should show the logs where you should see a repeating log entry for the failing daemon or launch agent.

  • Macbook is stuttering, UserEventAgent is CPU hog!

My Mac is running really slow. I opened up the Activity Monitor and saw that UserEventAgent is at 90%+ for CPU. How can I get it to calm down?

Select the process in the Activity Monitor list then click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button in the dialog.
You will need to track down what is using UserEventAgent to determine the problem's cause. The process often serves AppleScripts and inter-process events.

  • Bluetooth plugin crashes UserEventAgent

The UserEventAgent in the Activity Monitor was continually Not Responding recently. I traced it down to the Bluetooth useragent plugin in system > library > Usereventplugins. I have the file quarantined (moved to another folder nowhere near the System folder). My Bluetooth device still works (1st generation Apple Bluetooth keyboard), but I did hear that removing the file screws up data syncs and more intricate routines involving Bluetooth. Has anyone found out what's causing the Bluetooth plugin to crash the useragent? It's apparently not the plugin, I've swapped the plugin with another from an OS-matching computer, and the UserEventAgent still crashes. The data table has also been rebuilt by Diskwarrior.
This is on a 2.66 Quad-core Mac Pro, running 10.5.7.

System upgraded to SL. Problem avoided.

  • UserEventAgent problem, cannot unmount disc?

UserEventAgent seems to block the unmounting process for external discs. I have studied several threads that circles around the issue and come to the conclusion that it is a part of the UserEventAgent since:
    a) Unmounting works fine in safe mode
    b) Unmounting works when UserEventAgent is killed with Mountain Lion Cahe Cleaner
The question is, what seems anormal in this this UserEventAgent log?

I would be very grateful if anyone with an expertise on the subject could check the log out!
The problem persist on any discs, NTFS or HFS+. My version of mountain lion is a fresh install however the problem was also there after an upgrade from snow to mountain lion.

    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
