Using 4-20ma Sensor on NI WSN-3202

I have a vibration switch http://ifmefector.com/ifmus/web/dsfs!VKV021.html that I am trying to get to work in my wireless sensor network. NI only offers a voltage input node (NI WSN-3202), but the sensor is only available in 4-20ma output. The analog output is only 1 wire.
Is there a way to convert that signal to use voltage and have the WSN read it accordingly?
Thanks,
Josh

Put a precision resistor in the loop and read the voltage across the resistor.  For a 5VDC voltage input, use a 250 ohm resistor.

  • WSN 3202: increase sensor power delay before reading?

On an NI WSN-3202, Is there any way to increase the time between activation of sensor power and the time an analog reading is taken?  I presently have the devices set for 250ms, but I would like to have the power turned on a good 2-3 seconds before a reading is taken.  Is there any way to facilitate this, perhaps through a custom firmware update?

    Hi,
    Thank you for the reply.
I use a wsn-3226. There seems that there is no option to send data with radio message.
Here a print screen of my sequence, it is fairly simple, I don't understand why it's getting stuck in always on power.
I also tried to change the power setting with a user message and it worked. But it is unpracticable, I really need that to work. I use sensor that need to be power up at least 2 sec before sampling.
    Thank you

  • Microseconds delay to control digital outputs in WSN-3202

    Hi,
I’m using the LabVIEW WSN Module to control the digital outputs of the WSN-3202 node. Is there a way to add a microseconds delay in my flat sequence structure? Because I’m using a pulse driven optical sensor which requires delays intervals in microseconds.
    Thanks,
    Ahmed

    Hi Ahmed,
The availability of a microsecond resolution for timing depends on the onboard clocks or setup that the system allows. These nodes are often used to control/acquire in a non-continuous way to save battery. Therefore, they are required to wake/sleep in cycles that take a couple of minutes generally. What are you exactly trying to do with the node?

Hello, for my application I'm using a proximity sensor to count pulses using the CTR-400. To obtain velocity, I can make some calculations based on frequency or period but I was wondering if I can delegate this annoying task to the QUAD-510 module At the moment I'm able to read velocity using an encoder, but what if I use a single phase sensor like a proximity?

  • Acquiring data from all the analog channels of NI-3202 NODE using a single sensor

    Hi all,
I would like to know that can i be able to get the data from all the four analog channels of NI-WSN node 3202(analog input node) connecting only single sensor on the analog input and connecting all the remaining analog inputs using wires and also shorting the ground pins corresponding to each analog input pin.
By configuring the each channels like 0.5 sec delay for every analog channels to acquire data. can we get the sensor data from all the channels by doing this. basically here i am trying to increase the minimum sampling rate of the ni-wsn NODE 3202 which is 1s.
I this approach is correct or we cannot do this.
    Thanks

    Stefan,
In terms of differential and RSE, channels 0-8 should default to differential when using test panels.  Differential needs two input channels to function correctly and these channels must be spread apart by 8 channels. (i.e channels 0 and 7 are a differential pair)  Channel 13, on the other hand, will default to rse if chosen as the reading channel because there does not exist another channel that is eight away.  I am not quiet sure if the virtual channels will default channel 5 into being differential but I will check into it.  If it is differential as default then you may run into problems since channel 13 is utilized in both strain gauge reads.
"The second question is, if we can also use the "voltage" setting for measuring strain gauges? we did that in the past, using LabView 6.2."
If you are referring to "voltage" as acquiring a signal with custom voltage with exciation then I would reccomend using example in LabVIEW called Acq Wheatstone Bridge Samples (with Calibration).  This can be found by navigating to LabVIEW's example finder and expanding Hardware Input and Output>>DAQmx>>Analog Measurements>>Strain.
I have also included some useful links that may provide more insight into the SCC modules as well.  Also, what is the excitation voltage and power that your strain gauges are expecting?

  • Can USRP be used as a Gateway for NI-WSN Nodes

    Hi everyone,
I am using NI-WSN kIT comprises of gateway(9792) and NI-WSN NODES(3202,3212,3226 all programmable) and i am also trying experiments with NI-USRP 2921 so i thought to replace NI-9792 REAL TIME ETHERNET GATEWAY with NI-USRP 2921 as it is also operating on same 2.4GHz.
Can USRP 2921 act as a gateway or Not? is this is possible please suggest.
    Warm Regards,
    Abhinav Sharma
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    The short answer is No.
The longer answer is that a WSN node uses a fixed function radio with a full protocal stack.  The USRP is a general purpose radio covering a common set of frequencies however a fully functional turnkey stack does not exist.  Could it be designed?  Perhaps over the course of many focused man-years of development.
The USRP mostly used as a research device.  Most research implements a small aspect of a protocol, ususally focused on the physical or MAC layer, and then customizes it and evaluates the results.
The right solution for WSN is a WSN gateway.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#* In Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

  • Help with an Algorithm for using a level sensor to estimate consumption.

I'm developing a small HMI-Scada application for monitoring the level of Diesel in four vertical tanks similar to the screen shot below.
    Tank Information:
    20 Feet High
    8 Feet Inside Wall Diameter
    5,000 Gallons Capacity
(These Tanks supplies four Caterpillar Generators)
Since each tank already has an Ultrasonic Level transmitter installed (accuracy is plus or minus one Inch) I was thinking of using this Tank level information coming from that sensor to estimate consumption.
The problem I'm having right now is figuring out the correct math to use inside VB.Net to make this calculation work, considering that Diesel not used by the Generators will be returned back to the tank.
The consumption data we need is not needed in real time necessarily it is more like at the end of the day we need to know how much diesel was used by each generator, this will help management figure out and print a report with the total carbon emissions
    for that day.
The HMI-Scada application is going to have a Microsoft SQL Sever collecting the Tank Level Information every one minute.
To avoid further complications when Mr. Diesel comes with his truck to refill the tanks we are planning to have him manually enter into the HMI-Scada application the total amount of gallons pumped into each tank.
Do anyone in this forum have an idea of how this can be done?

    Hi,
Is the 20 feet actually measured from the inside Bottom to the inside Top of the tank? Is the Inside Diameter actually 8 feet all the way from the bottom to the top of the tank?
If those two answers are true then it seems like it would be easy enough to calculate.
     20 feet * 12 inces = 240 inches
    5000 gallons / 240 inches = 20.833333333333333333333333333333 gallons per inch
So, if i am right then for example, if you had 200 inches of fuel at the beginning of the day and 80 inches at the end of the day it would be:
    20.833333333333333333333333333333 * 200 = 4166.6666666666666666666666666667 gallons to start with
    20.833333333333333333333333333333 * 80 = 1666.6666666666666666666666666664 gallons at end of day
So the gallons used would be
    4166.6666666666666666666666666667 - 1666.6666666666666666666666666664 = 2500.00 gallons used for the day
    Example code:
    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
    Dim GallonsPerInch As Double = 5000 / (20 * 12) 'Gallons Per Inch
Dim StartingInches As Double = 200.0 'get inches at Start
Dim EndingInches As Double = 80.0 'get inches at End
Dim GallonsUsedToday As Double = (StartingInches - EndingInches) * GallonsPerInch 'Gallons used from Start to End
    MessageBox.Show("Gallons Used = " & GallonsUsedToday.ToString)
    End Sub
If you say it can`t be done then i`ll try it
    Thats right Razerz.
So where height is the change in the tank levels the volume is
    V = (pi)(radius ^ 2)(Height)
    V = (3.14)(4)(4)(Height) = 50.24 (height) cubic feet
    V = (50.24 cuft) (7.48 gal/cuft) (height) = 376 (height) gallons
So for an inch of height:
    V = 376/12 = 31.3 gallons per inch
    Just for fun
    5000 gals / (12)(31.3) = 13.29 feet high
Normally the tank does not fill to the top.
    Check my math.
So all you need to do is Constant(change in height) = gals. Once we get the constant right.
PS In fact it would be best to just measure the depth when the gas man fills the tank and calc the constant. I doubt the tank is exactly 8 feet. I mean you calc the constant once. And at that time check it is linear ie the tank is a cylinder.

  • Use of different sensors with scc-sg24

    Hi,
in my application I've to use two type of sensors with following characteristics:
    -a pressure sensor : 10V Ex V , input nominal 950 Ohm output nominal 300 Ohm
(what does it mean? I know that should be a 350ohm full bridge...)
    -a load cel: 10V Ex V, 700Ohm full bridge
It is the SG24 able to read this kind of sensors?
Can I use a single SG24 module to read the two sensor using the two
    channels at same time?

    Hi Pets,
by looking at the scc-sg 24 specifications at this link http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371073b.pdf you
you can see that your module has a 10 V excitation which is the same amount required by your sensor.
The module will work with either the 350 Ohm resistance and 700 Ohm, but since it's been designed for a 350 Ohm bridge, this will be more sensitive.
I hope this informations will help you.

  • Is there a way to turn 'passcode on immediately' while also using the fingerprint sensor?

If I turn my fingerprint sensor on in the new iPhone 5s to use as the passcode, it requires it to be used immediately after locking. I would like to change this to 1 minute but there aren't any other options when the fingerprint sensor is on. Is there a fix to this?

i am wondering the same thing. Also there should be an option where you ONLY have the fingerprint unlock instead of also having the numerical password when sliding phone.

  • Liquid transfer control/monitoring using valves, pumps, & sensors

    Hi there,
My project is writing a labview program to control & monitor the transfer of a liquid from a tanker truck to a 70-tonne storage tank, and from the storage tank to multiple 3-tonne railroad tankers. We will be using a NI controller (I don't remember the name of it right now) to control this system. The piping network for this transfer process consists of several remote control valves, 1 flow meter, 2 pumps (centrifugal & diaphragm), level sensors, & load cells. The labview program needs to:
    1. control the flow of liquid (i.e. start/stop transfer, open/close valves & activate/deactivate pumps when certain setpoints are reached)
    2. monitor the inventory of liquid in the tanker truck, storage tank, & railroad tanker (flow meter will indicate the flow rate, level senors will be in both tankers to indicate levels, and storage tank has a load cell which can be used to indicate the inventory of liquid iside the tank)
The transfer is split into 2 phases: tanker truck to storage tank & storage tank to railroad tanker. Both are separate processes (i.e. they do not occur simultaneously). So my labview program needs to be able to switch between these two processes.
I am relatively new to using labview, and this is a pretty tall order. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how I could set the program up? Or possibly lead me to some example programs I could look at to help me out.
    I appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks,
    Daryn

    Daryn,
You are right that "this is a pretty tall order" for a LabVIEW beginner. However, if you are patient and do not try to do too mcuh too quickly, you should be able to get it working.
First, I recommend that you get some LV training to make sure that you are sound on the fundamentals before you do mcuh on this project.  Fumbling around making novice errors could become a big problem for a project like this.
Next, break the problem down into "bite-sized" chunks. You will need to be able to read from the sensors. Write to controllers. Perform logical decision-making. Display data to the operators. Probably log information to files. Certainly handle error conditions.  LabVIEW makes it easy to keep things modular by using subVIs.
Also, carefully design the program before you write much code.  Your system will probably include a state machine. Document the states, what happens in each state, and the conditions for transition to other states. (Do not forget error conditions and "that will never happen" possibilites).  This state design document will make writing the program much easier.
Then look at the examples which come with LV. There are examples for data acquistion, for control, for state machines, and for other relevant parts of the code.  The examples most likely will not be directly useful in your final program but will save you lots of time in learning how to do some of these essential parts of your project.
