Using Advanced Feedback in a Question slide

Hello!
I am creating multiple choice questions using the question
slides in Captivate 3, and I want to provide feedback when the user
selects specific wrong answers. Like if they select answer A, it is
wrong, and I want to tell them why answer A specifically is wrong.
I am using the Advanced Answer Options in the Multiple Choice
Question editing dialog box, and I successfully created a feedback
box that pops up when they select answer A. However, after the
feedback box pops up, I want them to be able to guess again. The
action choices following the Advanced Answer Options allows me to
choose from continue to go to previous slide to jump to any
slide...but none of these allows the user to select another answer.
What I want to select is NO ACTION after the feedback text box pops
up, so that the user can select a new answer. But this isn't an
option. Am I missing something, or is there a workaround that will
let me let the user re-select an new answer?
Thanks!!!
Michaela

Thanks for the input friend,
I should have mentioned that in my application all
connections to Essbase use the same user name and
password so the filtering isn’t a concern. This is my
first Java application using Essbase has a data
source, I’m used to connecting to various SQL
databases and I always use a connection pool, how is
connection pooling handled in the Essbase java API?I'm not sure what happened to it since I never used it, but there used to be something called the High Availability Services or something that was essentially a connection pool for Essbase JAPI connections, but it required an extra license.
Since you don't care about identity (everyone has full access to everything), you can create your own connection pool, but you'll have to manage your multithreading yourself. Its been this way since the beginning. The C API isn't/wasn't thread-safe either (we tried).

  • Random question slide not shown when FP 8 or FP 9 output

    Hi everyone
I've just begun to use Captivate a month ago, so it is not
that much experience I can contribute with by now.
One thing I have recognized is that I get some problems with
random questions slides made from different question pools when
using Flash Player 8 or 9 in the output otions.
When using Flash Player 7 everything works as supposed: one
random question is shown for every random question slide using one
distinct question pool for each random question slide.
When using one of the two others some of my random question
slides are not shown. There are slides that are played - meaning
that the player shows an empty slide for the time of 3 seconds -
but the content is not shown. This happens only for some of the
random question slides, and those are the same question slides each
time, I publish - but when working or dragging around with the
random question slides and publish again, the problem would come
with some other random question slides, not positioned the same
place as before, but showing the same problem in each published
    version.
As written before each question pool is only used once. The
different question slides used in the question pools are all
    duplicates, naturally with adjusted content.
Does anyone has experienced something like that before? Could
there be any other trouble with the content when using Flash Player
7 in the output options, like quiz not playing in newly updated
Flash Players ore something like that? Anything?
I appreciate your suggestions or comments! Thanks in advance
    and kind regards,
    Lars

Some more info - and a working solution...
I have worked on this topic a bit more - and found out, that
I have a problem with output option set to Flash Player 7, too.
When I delete every other navigation option than the "next
question" (what is it called in english?) button, I get this
    problem:
The quiz now "freezes" randomly, not every time, but again
and again. The quiz has both random slides from question pools and
    simple question slides.
I have found out, that putting the simple question slides
into question pools and then showing a random slide from those
    question pools fixes the problem.
Has anyone experienced problems like that? Other solutions?
    Kind regards
    Lars
Maybe someone has a similar problem.

  • How can I make my question slide look and act like the rest of the project?

    Hi,
I have created my project without using a template. Each time I needed to create a new screen I simply duplicated the slide and then inserted new text. This worked quite well. However, when I tried to do this for a question slide, it wouldn't let me (obviously).
Is there a way of customising a question slide to look exactly like the rest of my project (and have the interactivity on the slide that the rest of the project has)? When I tried designing a new template and question template side and applying it to the question slide in my project, I could only insert a static image as the background on the template slide. Needless to say, there was no interactivity on the slide, i.e. no active click boxes etc, and I couldn't add these either when I applied it to the slide.
Any help is much appreciated. This is for a Masters project, so I'm still learning the basics.
    Thanks.

    Hi Lilybiri,
I am using Captivate 4. All of my screens so far look like a website - with menus and makeshift spry menus (image maps with click boxes). My preference is to use this layout for the question slides. However, it sounds like this isn't possible. What do other people do to make their question slides look a part of the course?
    Thanks.

  • Is there a way to restrict the number of attempts for a remediated question using advanced actions?

I have the following slides in my project:
    content slide 1
    content slide 2
    question slide 1
    question slide 2
Question slide 1 is a question about content slide 1. Question slide 2 is a question about content slide 2. I would like to restrict the total number of attempts to two for each question. If question 1 is answered incorrectly on the first attempt, the learner would be returned to content slide 1 for review. Clicking the next button will take the learner back to the missed quiz question and allow them a second attempt to answer it correctly. If they answer it incorrectly again, it is scored as incorrect and the learner is taken to question slide 2.
Can this be done or does remediation keep repeating until the learner answers the question correctly?
If that is the case, can I achieve my objective by using advanced actions? And, if so, can you provide step by step instructions on how to do this?

I think it could be possible, but giving you step-by-step instructions, sorry, that would take a lot of time. Did you use advanced actions already? My archived blog has a lot of use cases and tutorials, but I think it is not fair to ask on a forum for step-by-step instructions for each use case you want to create.  The most important thing will be to make sure that the user always remains in the Quiz scope, you can use the new system variable cpInQuizScope while testing. There is no system variable for attempts on question level, only one on Quiz level, so you'll have to create a user variable to track the attempts on question level. A big problem is that when you leave a question slide, without using the remediation work flow, the attempts are considered as finished. Personally I would prefer for that reason to not use the default question slides. You could try out a combination of remediation and advanced actions, never did test that?

  • Question slides auto advancing prior to an answer being selected

    Hi-
I have searched the postings and cannot find anything similar to what I am experiencing.
This only happens once the user has gone through the quiz once and has failed.  The passing grade is a 100%, so the chances of someone needing to re-take the quiz is rather high.  What happens is when the user gets to say question 3 or so, after about 10 to 15 seconds, the slide auto advances to the next question and does not allow the user to go back and answer the question.  Then on the next question it will not allow the user to select an answer.
This does not happen the first time through the quiz, only the second time through.
Has anyone else experienced this before?  Any ideas of what setting I have wrong?  I have all of my question sides set up the same; I have T/F and M/C.
I am using Captivate 4 (with all updates) and running the quiz through GeoLearining (our LMS).
    HELP!
    Thanks,
    Michelle

Just a note...I have checked the timing in the playbar and it is the same for all questions and it happens on question 1 and question 9 as far as I can tell.  I am not able to see how these questions are set up any differently than the other quesitons in the quiz.  There are only 15 questions total in this program and a total of 20 slides.

  • Question slide not advancing on click to continue

I have only one question slide out of 6 and it is a
true/false question. When answered the user clicks submit and the
correct success caption appears and it indicates click anywhere to
continue. The slide doesn't continue when you click on the slide.
When you click the success caption disappears but then you have to
click submit again, the success caption appears, you click anywere
and then the slide continues. I have this slide set the same way as
other true/false slides but it does not function the same way. Why
    is it doing this?

    Hi,
Please try it by changing the 'on correct answer' setting to 'jump to next slide'.

  • Adding variables to match question slides

    Hi All,
I am using Captivate 7 and need your help/idea/expertise on this. I am trying the following:
Adding a drag and drop slide wherein I should be able to drop the source to any target.
If the drop happens on the correct option (this is the challenge, how can I define the correct answer!), a message should flash saying "You are right"
If even a single drop goes wrong, then I the right answers should flash, (this I can create a new slide though)
But to set such conditions what should I exactly do? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Roja

The title of your question is bit confusing. Why should you have to add variables to match question slides?
The content of your question is totally different: each D&D slide can act as a question slide. It doesn't really have all the features of a question slide but most of them: Reporting, Score (only black/white, not partial score/penalty), Attempts, Actions On Success/Failure. When it is configured as a question its score will be reset when the user 'Retakes' a quiz with multiple attempts on quiz level etc. Progress quiz indicator will not be included however. And defining the correct answers is a breeze with the wizard or with the button Correct Answers.
The best part about D&D are IMO the 'Object actions': you can specify an advanced action for each drag&drop act and that is what you need. Do not use a simple action, because it will release the play head. That action can show a feedback text/object that was previously hidden, it can apply an effect to an object like flashing, etc. This blog post was written for CP8, but can help maybe:

  • Question slides distributed throughout CP7 project

I'd like to know if it is possible to have a Captivate 7 project made up of a number of content slides with pre-test question slides being used at various different points of the course?
At the moment when I add more than one pretest question slide they are all grouped together. The list below might help explain what I need to acheive. The reason I'm using pre-test question slides is that I don't want the results to be mixed in with the Graded questions at the end of the course.

As always any advice is gratefully received. Thanks.

Where I am using prestest question slides I am doing so simply to make use of the built-in question-types in Captivate, specifically the MCQ, Matching and FIB.
In this example I require feedback to be given after each individual question (incorrect, correct, try again - 2 attempts allowed per question).
The overall concept is to provide 2-3 content screens that teach the information before displaying a question slide to re-enforce what has just been taught. Once the user has tried the question and received basic feedback they continue to the next content slide.
All would be solved if I could place the built-in question slides wherever I want but by the sound of it this isn't possible unfortunately.
Is it possible to customise a survey question slide to displaycustom feedback (correct/incorrect) using advanced actions?

  • Advanced Feedback feature

    Here's the issue.
I'm using the multiple choice style question with advanced feedback on each answer.  I want the user to be able to go back and re-answer a question to see all the feedback.
For example, if the question was what color is the sky?
    A. blue - adv feedback "Correct good job, blah blah blah"
    B. green - adv feedback "Incorrect, although blah blah blah"
    C. red - adv feedback "Not quite, during sunset it can look blah blah blah"
I want the user to be able to select A, which advances the slide, but then go back and select B or C if they want to.  Right now they can select B or C first, but as soon as they get the right answer they can't select another one.  I'm using the quiz as a learning tool and it's not graded.
I'm using Captivate 5.  Any other information that you would need?
    Thanks,
    josh

Not quite...I don't want them to have to take the whole thing over again.  I want them to have the option to read the Advanced Feedback to incorrect answers even after they answer it correctly.  I used to be able to do it in Adobe Connect/Presentor.
The format of the module is as follows:
Pre-test - Multiple choice questions, we record there answers with the Adobe Connect - No feedback at all (just a gauge to see where they are)
Content - The user then begins the actual module, there will be informational slides, scenarios, pictures, etc.  Along with "content" questions, these are the ones with the advanced feedback with clarification of why an answer is correct or incorrect.  These results do not matter to me, we don't use the data as a factor in the test, it's purely informational.
Post-test - The same questions as the pre-test, except this time it tells them if it was correct or incorrect with feedback feature.  This is recorded and is the sole factor if they pass the course or not.
I'm having the issue with the content questions.  Once they select the correct answer it locks the question out and they can't select another answer.  If they select the wrong answer they can read the feedback and try again, but not if it's the right answer.  It doesn't even need to be a "quiz" I've been trying to figure a way to use the buttons and advanced actions, but it doesn't make sense to me.

  • Multiple fill blank objects on one question slide?

Hellou CP users, is it possible to put multiple fill blank objects on one question slide? And if, how can I manage them for quiz reporting and correct results?
    Yarik

I think indeed that you want a score for each fill-in-the-blank object, and that is not possible with the default FIB question slides. Only MCQ has partial scoring.
With TEB's and advanced actions that is possible. Also with the TextArea widget, as I explained in this blog post:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/widgets-and-custom-questions-part-2
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/extended-textarea-widget-more-functionality
TEB's have the advantage that as interactive objects, you can attach a score to them which is not the case for the TextArea widgets. But I would recommend getting Jim Leichliter's enhanced version of the TEB's as well, so that you can control what is shown in the TEB if you want to create a question with multiple attempts. I have described a use case recently in these forums but cannot remember exactly which thread. Jim's widget is free:

  • Can Retake Quiz button take me to 3rd question slide of the project?

    Hi,
I am happy to join this forum. I hope anyone of you answer my question.
I am using captivate 4. I am not storing score onto any LMS.
I am developing an e-learning course of 30 slides. First 20 slides are content slides. I have 2 question slides as 14th and 15th slides. I don't want these 2 questions be part of my main Quiz which starts from 21st onwards which has 10 question slides. The quiz result page has "Retake Quiz Button" which is taking to the 14th slide which I dont want. Actually Retake Quiz button should take me to 21st slide only.(..and all the question slides in my course showing "Question x of 12". But I want this to show "Question x of 10" only). Because I have used 2 question slides (14th and 15th) to check the user for better understanding.
    Can anyone help me out.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Manoharan.A

    Welcome to the forum,
Each Captivate file, if you enable scoring will report a total score, in your case the score of the 'pre' questions and of the 'real' questions. Same with the progress (which you can disable).
Since your pretest only has 2 slides, to achieve your goal without having to create multiple files (pretest or final test separated from the main course), I would propose not to use the default Question slides for the pre-test, but to create them using standard objects, variables and advanced actions. This is perfectly possible for the most Question types, so which type did you use for the pre-test: true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank...? Instead of reporting the score the usual way (they get stored in the system variable cpQuizInfoPointsScored), I would store the results of the pre-test in a variable.
Both your issues will be solved: when retaking the Quiz, since only regular Question slides are considered as a Quiz, you will be taken to the first Question slide and the progress will be as you want it to be.
If you want to go this way, and need more help, please post your questions. I did publish some articles on use of variables and advanced actions but examples were made with CP5 (principles are the same). Captiv8r (moderator of this forum) has a gooberguide about Advanced actions (for CP4) that could be of great help:

  • Can I modify a question slide to include more than 5 qs in same slide

    Hey everyone.
I'd like to know If I can modify a question slide to include more than one question in the same slide.
I'd like to include a slide with audio and some video in the left page and on the right page I'd like to include a q slide that can have more than one question to pertain to the input in the left page. But I wouldnt want to dupicate the left page.I'd like to include one page with input and the other page (right) with questions ( fill in the blank, multiple choice etc) just one slide of course.
I don't want to fill up the project with a bunch of question slides. The purpose of the activity is for the participant to listen to the input only once and start getting quizzed ( extracting detailed info, forecasting etc etc)
    Thanks

Please take a look at the screenshots,
you can see how I have selected to execute the following advanced action on the submi tbutton howver there are a number of things going wrong and I doubt it's cause of the syntax as I've done ertythig as instructed!
I'm executing the actions once the Submit button is clicked.
I've placed the actions in the same "file" TF1 -TF5.
After TF5 I've placed the show to shoe the results ...
    QUESTION:
This action was created seperateley cause it's  a standard action and autmatically sent me elsewhere, not the same file... ???
    Is that right?
I'm not getting a slide to show the feedback.
    Why?
    Timeline in question...???

  • Rating Scale (Likeart) question slide

    Hello cp experts!
I wish to use the Question slide 'Rating Scale (likert)' at the end on the presentation to provide a feedback.
Is it possible to report the student selection to LMS and view statistics over time? if so, how do I do that?
I didn't manage to make this work....
    your help is much appreciated.

If your LMS is truly SCORM-compliant, you should be able to track the Likert questions. Be sure to choose 'completed/incomplete' in the SCORM setup, not pass/fail, since there's no score associated with such questions.
The ability to report on those results and see any trends is, as others have said, completely dependent on your LMS capabilities and features.

  • Can I unpause a question slide automatically?

Once a question slide enters the pause state, waiting for the button to be pressed to move on, can I make it advance to the next slide automatically if the user does nothing for say 5 seconds?
    Thanks

Thanks Lilybiri, I think custom slides will help me and your blog is very useful.
The real reason I want timed slides is that I'm trying to make a quiz which will syncronise to a DVD playing on another device. The idea is to start the DVD playing and start the Captiv8 quiz at exactly the same time. The video will then play (it can't be skipped or paused) and contains 5 questions over 5 minutes. I need question 1 to appear  at exactly 1 minute in, question 2 to appear at 2 mins in, and so on for all five questions. The problem is that these question slides need to appear at the right time, every time, no matter if a user has answered a question, pressed something, changed their mind, done nothing at all , or had several attempts or whatever, without changing the total length of the quiz which will always be exactly the same length as the video on the DVD whatever the user does.
I really need a kind of 'master clock', perhaps on a master slide (?), which will force the Captv8 to turn to the right question at the right time, no matter how long the users take to answer, or even if they do nothing and ignore a question completely. I would like to add a countdown timer on each question too, so they know how long they have to answer before the slide disappears and moves on automatically. It's a high pressure quiz, as you have written about in the timer blog you wrote, but where the Captiv8 quiz won't alter its overall length whatever happens. Obviously I need to give them a score at the end.
    Hope you have some suggestions!
    Thanks again.

  • Audio on Question Slide

    Hi,
I am building a program where the participant listens to a
conversation and then has to answer questions about what he/she
heard. I would like to add a button to the question slide called
"hear it again" where they would click on it (or rollover) to hear
the audio track again. In a regular slide I would add a Button but
that option is blanked out on the question slide. Anything else
such as a caption, automatically plays the sound track.
Help! Anyone have any ideas about this?
    Thanx in advance!
    Gary

    Hi again
No, you aren't doing anything wrong. That's the way rollover
Images and Captions work. They don't display until your user mouses
over the rollover area. You asked for something that could be
clicked or rolled over to hear the audio track. Since clickable
items are a no no in Question slides, the rollover is your best
    bet.
Note that you don't need any Image or Caption to actually
appear if you don't want that. Just use an image that's a solid
color and set it as transparent. Or, for a caption, set the caption
as transparent with no actual text. The key is assigning the audio
to the Image or Caption itself and not the rollover area.
    Cheers... Rick
