Using AIC in ProRes timeline

I currently edit a lot of videos - mixing high quality original footage with found low quality clips from the web. I edit in ProRes, but for the sake of storage space, would it hurt much to convert the low quality web clips to AIC instead of ProRes and use them in the timeline? Even when I use ProRes, I encode at the resolution of the source clip, so it has to be rendered in FCP anyway. Just curious what your thoughts are about this. Thanks!

I think they are basically the same sort of idea.
AIC was the original and ProRes is the "new improved" version though I've never noticed any difference in quality.
Of course, that doesn't mean that others with more specialised eyes and requirements can't see vast improvements.

  • Stills look better when using ProRes timeline instead of HDV

I thought I'd share a discovery, and also ask for some advice.
    Discovery:
When exporting stills (as PSD files), I exported from an HDV timeline, and I exported from a ProRes HQ 1920x1080 30p timeline (I took the same shots from the HDV timelime and pasted them into the ProRes timeline before exporting).
The HDV exports are not only the incorrect aspect ratio, but have many more "jaggies" than the ProRes export.
The HDV exports also have a slightly higher contrast ratio.
Personally I prefer the look of the ProRes 30p stills.
Now my question: If I edit in the ProRes 30p timeline, will that also improve the look of my video?

Stands to reason. ProRes is a full raster 10-bit I-Frame codec.
HDV is an anamorphic (squeezed) 8-bit GOP codec. ProRes wins.
    Good discovery...thanks for sharing.

  • Can I edit on a ProRes timeline containing XDCAM EX footage and DVCPRO?

I have a documentary project of which the majority was shot with the EX-1 at 1080 24p and I have been editing that footage contained in a 1080 24p ProRes (standard quality) timeline. We have some extra interviews that were shot with a Panasonic Varicam at same frame rate and resolution. Will I be able to drag the DVCPRO HD files directly into the ProRes timeline and edit with it and the EX-1 footage?
I assume that whatever footage I insert into the ProRes timeline is being converted to ProRes on the fly. This has worked well with the EX-1 footage. Not sure how it will be with the DVCPRO HD footage...will it be too taxing on the CPU? If it was, I think my fallback option would be to transcode all the DVCPRO HD footage to ProRes using Compressor...and then pull it into the timeline.
If anyone has had experience with this, I would very much like to hear your comments.
    Thanks, John

HI Tom, thanks for the reply, I was afraid of that, I did not know you could do limited trimming in the QT PLayer, this might just help me out

  • ProRes timeline/export on mac in Premiere CC

I've posted about this earlier but thought it was worth another try.
Using Premiere CC on a Mac Pro (with Mountain Lion and Quadro 4000 Cuda card) - when in a ProRes timeline (whether it be 422 or LT), and trying to export to ProRes (whether "use preview files" is checked or not), Premiere consistently hangs on export whenever it hits a graphic file (tiff, psd, etc) or a Premiere generated title.  If I export into another format (h264, etc) - it exports fine (just takes awhile).
In Premiere CS6, "use previews" never worked with ProRes, but you could still export to ProRes - it just didn't use the preview files.  Now with CC, you can't do either - at least not if you are using any graphics files or titles.  If you're just using video clips in the timeline, then it works fine (using previews or not).  I've tried this on 2 systems and have found other users on these boards as well as the Creative Cow forums that are experiencing the same issues.
Being able to export with previews was perhaps the biggest reason I upgraded to CC, but instead I feel like its taken a step backwards (at least on a Mac in a ProRes environment).
    Is anyone from Adobe listening??

Since this is an export problem, you'll probably get more response on the AME forum. At the very least, staff members who visit that forum are more likely to know if this is a known issue.
What are the dimensions of your still images and, for that matter, of the PPRO titles?
If you have GPU acceleration enabled, please try encoding with it switched to Software-only (in Premiere; there's no switch for this in AME.)

  • Why poor quality AIC & Apple ProRes HQ  when compared to original video files!

First, I'm a long time PC user who has recently switched to Mac's and I'm rather picky about the quality of my videos.
Problem: I have HD video from a Canon HF S10 camcorder and Canon EOS 7D that looks fantastic on a PC... but looks very so-so once imported into a iMovie or FCE or FCP. I've tried all three programs using AIC and yes I've even tried Apple Pro Res HQ and still end up with very poor quality mov files when compared to the originals. Part of the problem (or benefit of a PC) is that the PC actually plays the original RAW MTS/M2TS/MOV files without any trouble and and they look unbelievable. Where as my Mac has to import/convert the file to AIC or Apple Pro Res HQ... so no matter what codec I use, my Mac produces video that is not even close to what I get out of my PC. My original RAW files are all 1920x1080 60i and are MTS files from the HF S10 and Mov files from the 7D. Even the original RAW Mov files produced from the 7D don't look as good on my Mac as they do on my PC. I even took a SD card with the original files down to the local Apple store to see how they look on a Macbook Pro and they still don't look like the originals on my PC. Also, all my comparisons are being done side by side on two 24" Apple cinema displays that are calibrated. Any ideas as to why the quality is just so-so when compared to the originals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you're working in Final Cut Pro you should try that forum. What version of the software are you using? The AVCHD media should be ingested using log and transfer. The 7D media should be converted using Compressor. You don' need HQ, ProRes is sufficient. How are you monitoring the video? Are full size on a video monitor? All this should be explained on the FCP forum. FCE does not work with ProRes in any form.

  • Aic and prores

    Hi,
I have HDV footage which I captured as AIC and been editing in that since (the reason I used AIC is because I was using FCE before and only now have moved to FCS).
The last step for me was colour grade and I decided to use Color. When I sent the sequence back to FCP. Color rendered the sequence as ProRes. But the footage was very lossy and the quality much lower than the non colour corrected footage.
Reading around it appears that AIC is not a good codec to use in Color and I should be working in ProRes.
So, apart from recapturing as ProRes,
    1. Do I further loose information (quality) if I convert my AIC sequence to ProRes?
    2. To convert the AIC sequence to ProRes, is it just changing the render format to ProRes?
    thanks
    Ajay

Yes, the technical specs say that you can easily use ProRes 422 on a MacBook Pro but they seem it indicate that capturing it may be a problem. I have been online with Apple and they say that I can use a different intermediate but not Pro Res 422 - has anyone tired using PropRes 422 on Macbook Pros?

  • ProRes or AIC or ProRes(HD) when transfering???

    Hi,
What codec will you transfering into FCP when connecting your AVCHD camcorder?
    AIC or ProRes or ProRes(HD)?
    and Why you choose it?

not HDV .... use ProRes or AIC. For what its worth, AIC has the lower data-rate so may offer the best performance. Run a couple of quick tests on a 10" clip rendered out to each of the 2 formats and post back with your results

Any ideas as to why the quality is just so-so when compared to the originals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The thing that is wrong is that you are judging the quality of VIDEO on COMPUTER monitors. Properly calibrated or no...this is not how you do it. Calibration for computer monitors sets them right for PHOTOSHOP and color, not VIDEO and proper monitoring. Only getting a signal to a broadcast VIDEO monitor, or HDTV, will show you what you really have. And for that you need an HD input/output device or capture card...and the HDTV or HD monitor.
Computer monitors are never the place to judge video quality. Resolution is typically lowered to allow for full frame playback. Even if paused.

Legacy FCP has Revert Project to return to the last saved version, and it has Restore Project to go back to one of the autosaved versions. The maximum number of undo's can be set in user preferences. A lot different than X.

  • AIC in a ProRes timeline=multiple crashes during audio edit

I have three clips in a ProRes 1440x1080i60 sequence. Two were capture into FCP ProRes, the other was captured into iMovie08 1920x1080 AIC.
Curiously, the AIC clip shows up as 1440x1080 in the Properties database.
When rendering the T/L I get an error about the codec not supporting the frame size (??)
I finished the rough cut and now am working on the sound track, adjusting levels and normalizing.
First I separated one camera's stereo channels into two, moving one, copying the other and placing it into the original R channel...FCP crashed.
Next I just muted the R channel and moved the Pan for the L channel to center. Then I was working on levels, adjusting the keyframes, and up popped the twirling beach ball of death.
I sent off the report and tried 'er agin. Same thing--while editing the keyframes and playing back, it hangs, then crashes.
All audio clips report in as 48khz 16bit.
    Any ideas?

So, what happened to the idea of a codec agnostic timeline?
BTW, this time, I just restarted and kept saving every few actions and it never crashed. Finally finished the segment.

  • Apple ProRes Timeline playback problem - Please Help

I am capturing 720p 60 video from a Panasonic Varicam using a Blackmagic HD Extreme card and using the Apple ProsRes (HQ) setting (Blackmagic HDTV 720p 59.94). We are editing the film in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 24fps. In my timeline all the clips are marked for render preview (green). When I play back sequences, some scenes seem to be stuttering or playing back two duplicate frames. Some scenes play fine. I've rendered the sequences and it corrects the problem with some scenes and causes the problem in others. There seems to be no consistency to what is happening. I would deeply appreciate any input on this problem.
    Thanks.

The clips and the sequence don't match. We are capturing 60fps from the Varicam, but need to edit in 24fps for a film release. I don't mind rendering the sequences, but it sometimes fixes the problem and sometimes causes the problem. Thanks for the thought though.

  • Using ext monitor for timeline and laptop screen as preview?

is it possible that when i connect my external monitor to my macbook pro i can use the external for the timeline and the laptop screen for the previewing?
    cheers

I'm trying to do this exact same thing and am coming to the conclusion that it is not possible given my setup. I have a MacBook Pro 2.2 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and a NIVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Graphics Card. I'm running FCS 3 and all media is read from a 1TB Seagate 7200 SATA drive read through a SeriTek 2SM2 PCI card in the Express Slot.
You can easily arrange your monitors to do what you're asking (as outlined above), but the problem is the Graphics Card is not powerful enough to run both monitors and you will experience dropped frames with any HD codecs. I've tried XDCAM, DVCPROHD and ProRes 422 -- all dropped frames immediately. In fact, even if I use the "closed clamshell" mode, so the graphics card is powering ONLY the external monitor, I still get the same dropped frames issue. The only way I can edit or play back without dropped frames is by using NO external monitor whatsoever.
Is this a unique problem for me? Is there a solution to this? Would the new 17 inch i5's with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512MB) be able to power an external monitor?
EDIT: And the External Monitor is a Dell 2408WFP connected through the DVI port.

  • Avid segment coming to FCP, HD Prores timeline

Is there a way to get anything off the AVID onto an Apple Prores 422 1080 60i timeline? I've read here about using Avid codecs, but I want to make the AVID material totally FCP-neutral. I don't want to change my timeline. I have no idea how to work in this area. Can it be fully transcoded? Just a six minute piece of media.

Avid can export to a QuickTime .mov file.
Depending which version, maybe even to the ProRes 422 codec.

  • Using Numbers as a timeline program?

I am writing stories as a hobby and have so many characters and events now with my 3th book that I start to forget what happened when and who was born at what date. I looked for a timeline program on the web but could not find anything that is special made for writers. I was wondering if Numbers could be used for something like this. Does someone has a good template or could tell me how to make this kind of project?
    André

    Numbers might be helpful.
List the characters in columns across the top and time in rows down the left (on the theory that there are more time segments than characters). It's easier to scroll down than across, IMHO.
or you could try this program: http://www.beedocuments.com/index.php

  • Premiere Pro CC crashes when using jpg pictures in timeline. Any help?

My PP CC (on Mac) crashes when using (large) jpg pictures in a HD timeline. PP gives me this path in an error message: [/sirreact64/releases/2013.03/shared/adobe/MediaCore/Backend/Make/Mac/../../Src/Video/Vid eoPreviewCache.cpp-75]
