Using air app when not active

Does anyone know how to maximize an air app without clicking on it?
I will try to explain this but it is hard so bear with me?
I want an air app that will be minized to the system tray to open when the user highlights text in a desktop application and the presses a certain keyboard command. The keyboard commant would be something like ctrl + t.
Once the event is trigger I want that text to be sent to a text box in the air app from there it will be translated.
The reason I want to do this is that I want an app that uses google translate api to translate any selectable text that may be on the screen.
I have the translator already finished. I just want to add the feature explained above but I am not sure where to start.

Thanks kglad.com. I will try this and see if it works. Can you check my code a bit to see if it's right?
var continueFile:File = new File(File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("savedgames/continueGames.txt").nativePath.toString());
Does this look right to work across all desktop OS?

  • IChat using  processor power when not activated

    Hello,
    Activity Monitor CPU Usage this morning shows excessive use of CPU, by something called 'iChat Agent' (process ID 187), and the monitor window shows between 45 and 52% CPU usage for a computer I haven't been using and which was offline.
    I have never activated nor used iChat, so can anyone suggest what might be going on? Thanks....BC

    Bill,
    1st do you have other users on your computer? If that is the case I would make sure whilst in Activity Manager your looking at My Processes (Top right) and not All Processes? Also If you or anyone else has opened iChat it will load the agent. You are more then welcome to quit it. Also Mine starts on my computer because I have iChat start in the Menu bar with my computer but iChat itself is not running. I googled What it was and got the definition below:
    An agent is a special type of application designed to help the user in an unobtrusive manner. Agents typically run in the background, providing information as needed to the user or to another application. Agents can display panels occasionally or come to the foreground to interact with the user if necessary. User interactions should always be brief and have a specific goal, such as setting preferences or requesting a piece of needed information.
    An agent may be launched by the user but is more likely to be launched by the system or another application. As a result, agents do not show up in the Dock or the Force Quit window. Agents also do not have a menu bar for choosing commands. User manipulation of an agent typically occurs through dialogs or contextual menus in the agent user interface.
    The iChat application uses an agent to communicate with the chat server and notify the user of incoming chat requests. The Dock is another agent program that is launched by the system for the benefit of the user.
    I hope that helps,
    Weston

    macbook air runs hot and makes noise like processor running hard when connected to display - even when not actively using air book

    You could use the free tool iStat Pro to see what changes when you connect your MBA to the display. Without doing anything the CPU pane should show a high percentage for "Idle". If the idle value is too low, launch the Activity Monitor and sort by CPU usage. There is a pane showing the different temperatures of your computer. Watch them for a few minutes after connecting the display.

  • How to listen for key press when air app does not have focus

    Hi,
    I am developing a application in air and part of the functionality I need is the ability for the app to listen for when a specific key is pressed, even when the air app does not have focus.
    Is there support for this for windows or mac? If not, how might this be accomplished? ANE?

    Ok Mr. Smartass...Ok
    I'm building a browser that is always open, and when
    a user presses Ctrl+F1 (notice, just those two keys,
    I don't care what else they press...) the browser
    will open up. That way, you don't have to wait for it
    to load all the time.You have two ideas here. One is having a universal key map that always gets ctrl-f1 sent to your app. The other is a program that is constantly running so that you don't have to wait for it to open up. The former is not possible (and this is a good thing) As warneria and I have been saying, it is bad design for an app to try to force an OS to implement this kind of feature.
    If you're not going to help please don't post at all;
    it's a waste of time for both you, me, and anyone
    else who may need help on the same subject. Why wouldBelieve it or not, I am helping you.

    http://oracledisect.blogspot.com
    Ignacio,
    The excessive waits on log file parallel write and the related client wait of log file sync may be due to insufficient CPU availability, and may not point at an actual redo log size problem or a problem with the disk speed where the redo is written to disk, especially if there are 3 Oracle instances on the server with a single CPU.
    Paraphrased from "Optimizing Oracle Performance":
    The log file sync wait event is one of the first events to show increased latencies due to the time a process spends waiting in a CPU wait queue while processing excessive logical IOs.
    Kevin Closson wrote a couple blog entries that examined the potential problems of insufficient CPU capacity and its effects on log file parallel write when writing to solid state disks, and even when writing redo was explicitly disabled:
    http://kevinclosson.wordpress.com/2007/07/21/manly-men-only-use-solid-state-disk-for-redo-logging-lgwr-io-is-simple-but-not-lgwr-processing/
    "Once LGWR loses his CPU it may be quite some time until he gets it back. For instance, if LGWR is preempted in the middle of trying to perform a redo buffer flush, there may be several time slices of execution for other processes before LGWR gets back on CPU..." Fix the CPU problem, and the other significant waits may decrease.
    JesusLuvR,
    yingkuan's suggestion to look at the SQL statement that performs the 4,365,564 logical IOs, consumes 186.03 CPU seconds, and has an execution time of 225.06 seconds, is likely a very good starting point. You might also want to check the value of the SESSION_CACHED_CURSORS parameter to see if it needs to be adjusted.

    My iPhone3GS has started crashing. I'll be mid-phone call, or using an app, when the screen will go dark. I'll have to do a restart. It dumps to the warning screen that there's no power and needs to be plugged in.
    Once I connect the phone to a power source, in a couple of minutes it's ready to roll again, and displaying a "full battery" icon.
    The phone is almost always fully charged when this happens, and I don't get a crash when the phone is plugged into a power source.
    Took my iphone to apple store, they informed that battery is very good and there is no need for replacement. Might be there is a problem with iphone motherboard. But they can't repair it as my 3GS crossed warranty.
    Where should I go to repair this. Within 2 years...this 32GB 3GS is almost garbage for me with no support from apple. I am ready to send it to apple for repairs and pay the repair charges.

  • When to use inheritance and when not to?

    I've just been trying find out when to use inheritance and when not to use inheritance? I know that inheritance gives advantages such as code reuse and maintainability. But when are their times not to use inheritance that may effect the design of a project?
    Also when should one consider aggregation over inheritance(is-a relationship)?
    thanks,
    plandis

    Hi
    Answering this question usually requires a few books, so, I'm sorry, it's not really as simple as choosing between using a screwdriver vs. a hammer.
    But, very short, inheritance should ideally only be used when there exist a strict 'is-a' relationship. However, sometimes it may be clever to inherit when you have a 'is-almost-a' relationship... And sometimes this is a stupid move. This depends on the context/circumstances.
    Aggregation is normally considered a 'has-a' relationship, thereby differing clearly from inheritance. The old 'car' model says "a car is-a vehicle and has-some (at least) wheels."
    The wheels are aggregated to the car class, that itself is inherited from vehicle.
    However, this is just a good rule-of-thumb and there may be circumstantial reasons for not following these guidelines.

  • WHEN TO USE SYS_REFCURSOR AND WHEN NOT TO USE REFCURSOR

    SYS_REFCURSOR is a Weakly Defined Cursor
    DECLARE emp_refcur SYS_REFCURSOR;
    when this is so simple
    why this
    DECLARE TYPE emp_cur_type IS REF CURSOR RETURN emp%ROWTYPE; my_rec emp_cur_type; ?
    Can anyone explain in what situations we should prefer among these ..when both can give same result set .

    > WHEN TO USE SYS_REFCURSOR AND WHEN NOT TO USE REFCURSOR
    When the requirements define that one is better suited than the other.
    There are no hard and fast rules about when to use a specific tool. There are however basic concepts of what the purpose of the tool is, and what typical problems the tool can address.
    Ref cursors in PL/SQL.. usually not the best of ideas. Ref cursors are designed for client-server processing.
    1) The client makes a request for data/information.
    2) PL applies the back-end server logic and construct a SQL statement for the client.
    3) PL passes the SQL to the SQL engine where it is parsed and a SQL cursor created.
    4) PL passes a reference handle to SQL cursor back to the client
    5) The client can now fetch the rows output from the cursor.
    Advantages.
    - The client does not need to know SQL, db structures, business logic, etc
    - The PL code can be improved, modified, new business logic added, without even touching a single byte of client code
    So what are the advantages where the "client" in the above is another PL/SQL program? None really.
    A "real" client (an external one like Java, C#, Delphi, etc) can receive the ref cursor handle and dynamically at run-time determine the projection (output) of the cursor.
    PL code cannot (unless using the latest 11g features). In PL code, a ref cursor is actually implemented as a DBMS_SQL cursor. A DBMS_SQL cursor is to PL code what ref cursor is to Java/C#/etc.
    So whether you define a strongly typed or weakly typed ref cursor in PL/SQL code... typical response is "so what?" as ref cursors are not really intended for PL code. Not that there are exceptions - they do come in handy at times.. but as exceptions to the rule.
    So my response is "so what?" - it is more important to *correctly" chose what type of client cursor data type you want to use to interact with the back-end SQL cursor. Once that decision has been made (based on technical sound logic), then one can look at  (minor) issues such as weak vs. strong ref cursors.

    I am going to desperately to develop my application. Hope someone can help me........
    I am using badger for air which I get it here http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/badger_for_air_apps.html and it launch my app correctly, but I can't pass any variable into my app when launch.
    I have read the instruction and adding some code like this :
    on index.html(show my badge installer):
        var so = new SWFObject("AIRInstallBadge.swf", "", "215", "180", "9.0.115", "#000000");

            so.addVariable("appname", "Secure%205");
            so.addVariable("appurl", "http://localhost/testing/source/secure5.air");

            so.addVariable("pubid", "B71ED76ECC937067D72BB9A0CDB516D1A8F43A9E.1");
            so.addVariable("arguments", "launch from browser");// this is my code
            so.addVariable("appversion", "0.1");
            so.write("flashcontent");
    on index.html(my initial content) :

    My application running smoothly but there is no alert that show applauncharg variable.
    then I am trying to know if invoke event run correctly or not by adding code
    alert ("OK");
    and it works, so there is no problem with the event listener.
    does any one know if I missing something or any thing wrong with my code?

    alert (applauncarg);//just to make sure the variable had been sent correctly
    I have get the answer. If someone need the source code, just Pm me and I'll give you my Source to help you.
    The first is to make sure that your action scipt code can handle the argument that passed by javascript.
    Make attention between invoke event and browser invoke event! it is almost same but they are different.
    If you type browser invoke event, it seems browser invokeevent doesn't recognized, but it works.
    The second is my mistake on source code. onInvokeevent shold be like this :
    function onInvoke(e)
    //my code
    applauncarg = .arguments;
    alert (applauncarg);
    -closed-

  • Air App will not read local text file using openAsync/readUTFBytes on user (non-admin) mode

    I am running an Air App I did for the desktop, from the actual installed executable already deployed in the machine (Not from Flash Pro / Flex dev. environment). For some reason the app will not read a text file stored in the same application folder unless I run my app as administrator from the OS.
    When I run the app as admin, or within the development environment it works fine. Maybe this is related to some security issue? I read the adobe air documentation, and this should work...
    I am using openAsync/readUTFBytes on user as shown here:
    var continueGamesConnection:FileStream();
    var continueFile:File = new File(File.applicationDirectory.resolvePath("continueGames.txt").nativePath.toString());
    continueGamesConnection.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, openSavedGames);
    continueGamesConnection.openAsync(continueFile, FileMode.UPDATE);
    function openSavedGames(event:Event):void
         continueGamesConnection.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, openSavedGames);
         var content:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
         var loadedContent:String = new String();
         loadedContent = continueGamesConnection.readUTFBytes(continueGamesConnection.bytesAvailable);
         content.decode(loadedContent);
         variableX = content. variableX
         //etc, etc.
         continueGamesConnection.close();
    By the way, I have also, tried using FileMode.READ, and others, and it still gives me the same problem. Only works if ran on admin mode or from the dev. environment.
    It's very frustrating, I tried reading other posts without any luck... What solutions do people use for this kind of problem?
    I have seen that you can set the app to run as admin somehow, and I guess that could work. However, this should work just fine, since it doesn't seem to violate any of the security APIs of Air. Seems like an overkill. But even so, how do I do that?
    You help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks kglad.com. I will try this and see if it works. Can you check my code a bit to see if it's right?
    var continueFile:File = new File(File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("savedgames/continueGames.txt").nativePath.toString());
    Does this look right to work across all desktop OS?

  • AIR app does not open anymore after minimizing on windows

    Hi guys,
    I need some help in figuring out a strange issue I am facing.
    I have an AIR app whih is minimizable. When I run it on windows XP and minimize it, it gets minimized. But
    clicking on the task bar does not open the app anymore. The task manager shows that the CPU usage for the app has gone upto 50%
    and it consistently stays over there with out recovering from it.
    Right clicking on it and then trying it to close shows me the windows dialog: "the program is not responding".
    MInimizing and re-opening works fine on MAC.
    Anyone has ideas on what might be happening? Suggestions or pointers on how to debug this?
    thanks,
    Sunil

    It turns out that in one of my UI components, the top level item was a VBox which was using a list of HBox components and the height of each HBox component was set to VBox height /5.
    I modified the height to be set to "100%" for each HBox.
    and everything worked fine.
    I really do not know how it can cause the application to hang earlier.
    thanks,
    Sunil
