Using ARD to reboot into XP

Hello, all,
There are 16 Mac Pro workstations in our lab which have a Bootcamp partition (running Windows XP)... most of the work we do is in OS X, but for one class we run Maya in Windows XP.
I want to remotely reboot from OS X to XP, but I don't want this to affect the default Startup disk (which is set to OS X). Has anyone done this? The "Automated Tasks" feature of ARD seems like it has potential but I haven't seen anything related to rebooting into XP.
I am aware of holding the Option key down upon restarting, but if it's possible to automate the reboot and have the workstations running XP when the students get to class, I'd prefer that.
Thanks for any help!
Phil

Hi Phil,
Try using the "Send UNIX Command" function in ARD with the following command:
/usr/sbin/bless --device /dev/disk0s3 --setBoot --legacy --nextonly
Then reboot. The workstations will reboot into Windows for just the next time. Thereafter they will continue to use OS X as the default startup disk.

  • Setting boot drive using ARD.

I'm trying to use ARD to help re-image labs. I need to be able to set machines to netboot for imaging. I have read and tried the Manage->set boot drive. This option is grayed out and I'm not sure why. I would appreciate any help in either getting this option working or a unix command to set the machines to netboot so I don't have to manually restart each machine. I would use the server to just push the command, but I only want to do 30 at a time rather than all 600 at 1 time which is why I'm using ARD.

    use send unix command
    set user to root
    send the command
    bless --netboot
then after the command is successful, use ARD to reboot the computer.
Check out How to NetBoot Across Subnets for more info on bless
test on one computer, ones you get the settings right , try a larger group.

  • Can not reboot into OSX from Windows using Bootcamp assistant

I'm having a bit of a problem with rebooting into OSX from Windows on bootcamp. Clicking on the icon in the system tray produces a message that Windows can not find the OSX disk. Trying to open the Bootcamp preferences also generates an error. I have no problem getting back into OSX if I shut down Windows and restart the MacPro while holding down the option key. This is with a Windows 7 install on Bootcamp, but I had the same issue with a previous install of Win XP. I nuked and paved OSX and the WIndows disk between installs so my current problem is not carry over from the XP install.

My bad I should have been more clear. The problem is actually with a XP install via bootcamp, my Win 7 install is in VM Ware Fusion.
The XP install is on a second drive. Since you asked about this I'm assuming it may be the reason Im having problems.
The error is I get when trying to access bootcamp via the Windows control panel or by right clicking the sys tray icon is - "An error occured while trying to access the start up disk settings. You may not have privileges ...blah, blah, blah. I only created one account and I have enough privliges to change admin stuff in windows so I cant see privliges being the issue. I reassigned the OSX partition a new drive letter and rebooted windows but this didn't help.
The only drivers I installed, other then updating the video driver, are the bootcamp drivers

    Hi there,
I've used the sbRIO-9612 for year on the project, recently it sometimes reboots into safe mode. In MAX I may find the status of the sbRIO is "Safe Mode with software error". Can anyone tell me, how can I find out where is the problem. I have the error log as attachment.

  • How do you automatically run software update using ARD?

Is there a way to automate running software update and downloading all updates using ARD? My current option is to log into each machine and do it manually. (I am also using a OSX server 10.6 if that helps.)
    Thanks

Use the the Send UNIX Command option. There's a template in the Miscellaneous section to have the workstations download and install updates; run it as the root user in the Send Command as field so you don't have to worry about a user being logged into each workstation. You can set the command as a task to run on a schedule if you wish.
Since each workstation will download each update, it's most efficient if you can run a Software Update Server and point your workstations to that instead of directly to Apple. Then you don't have multiple downloads taking up your Internet bandwidth. If you have on a few workstations and/or a really big pipe to the Internet, that may not be a concern for you.
    Regards.

  • Button or Widget to Reboot Into Windows

The Windows utilities have a feature to click and boot into OS X. Is there a widget, or something similar, for OS X that will allow me to click and boot into Windows? I really hate having to wait around just to hold down the Option key. And, I do not want to alter my primary boot partition.
    Thanx,
    Fred

    (bump)
I'm still looking for a solution... a widget, shortcut, or something similar and simple. I know of all of the NORMAL ways to accomplish this, but I'm not going to change out my boot manager or use another computer. I have plenty of OTHER machines I could use, but I'm looking to use this one box. Again, the goal is to have a SIMPLE way of clicking an icon and having the system reboot into Windows.
    Thanx, in advance.

  • Cannot log in to OSX Server using ARD

I am struggling with a problem that I cannot figure out. I posted this on the ARD discussion group and did not get a reply.
I use ARD, latest version, all updates, to remotely control about 9 machines across two locations that are linked by a pair of NetGear FVS124G routers connected by fulltime VPN. All of the Macs are running 10.5.4, all have the latest updates across the board, as do the single OSX servers in each location both of which are running OSX 10.5.4 server with current updates.
I can access all of the workstations using ARD without difficulty, both locally and across the VPN.
The servers will not authenticate, returning the message, "Authentication failed to ....... Server"
The message seems straightforward enough, its cause more obscure, and I get the same message on each of the two servers.
The login I am attempting to use in ARD is an administrator account, sharing on the servers is set to allow full access in the sharing setting in System Preferences in both servers, and I have no trouble using either the server preferences or server admin tools to control the two servers.
It is just that ARD won't allow the login that works with either local login or the server tools. I am able to login to each server with SSH without difficulty.
In checking the two servers, I am surprised to see them both listed in ARD info page as OSX 10.4.11 clients (which they clearly are not), whereas they are both listed (accurately) as running the current ARD client.
I suspect something fairly simple in my configuration of the two servers that I am overlooking since I can log into all the OSX workstations at either location from ARD at either location.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. As I think I understand what you are saying, you do not use the "all users" setting for remote access in the server settings, and then allow ARD to provide remote control.
I have used the all users setting for ARD, and will try changing this on the servers. The other settings are already as you suggest.
Thanks and will see if this works....

  • Using ARD to change user settings

I was wondering if it was possible to use ARD to change the desktop background for all users? This kinda turns into two questions for me since I know nothing about Macs. First, is there an "all users" settings type thing at all, if so where? Second, is there some sort of config file that would store the location of the desktop background so I could eventually copy a new background to a location and change that file to point to the new file, thus upgrading the desktop background?

    Hi,
I have created a script to change other functions of remote macs. So this version is an adaptation of my script to your needs. Note that I am changing the admin password. For other user just change the admin name and password accordingly.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
    Start of Applescript------
    property my_ip : ""
property my_password : "the admin password"
property new_password : "the new admin password"
    tell application "Remote Desktop"
-- this is a fixed group of macs that should be added or deleted as needed in ARD
set the_list to computers in computer list "to change"
repeat with i from 1 to number of items in the_list
    set this_item to item i of the_list
-- if mac offline skip it
if the status message of this_item is "Available" then
set my_ip to Internet address of this_item
-- log as admin into remote mac
    set my_log to "ssh admin@" & my_ip
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    -- log as admin
    do script my_log
-- there is in some cases the security issue.
-- RSA key fingerprint is ... Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
    delay 3
do script "yes" in window 1

-- do whatever in the remote mac, in this case change admin password
do script "passwd" in window 1

  • Using ARD remotely connecting to work computer with Airport Extreme...

So I've looked through the forums, over the interwebs, through the ARD PDF manuals online and I'm coming up short. Ugh.
I want to connect from my home laptop to my desktop at my small business where we're using an Airport Extreme for a router. I can NOT figure out how to get this configured to work. We use ARD within the business, so on the same network, no problems. With the router, I'm guessing I need to get the computer setup to have a locked in IP and whatnot but no where can I find the instructions that tell me EVERTHING I need to do. Can someone here point me in the right direction please or hit me over the head with a 2x4 of exact instructions!
    Thanks for your time! Shawn

    Hi Shawn,
So the steps listed bellow assume some things. They assume that the Airport Extreme Router your configuring is connected directly to the internet connection. And that the Airport Extreme is the only router between your computers and the internet.
That means we're talking about say a DSL modem plugged directly into the Airport Extreme, or a cable modem. in ether case, this assumes that said modem, is not acting as an internet router.
If your modem has multiple ethernet ports on it, or has a little antenna sticking out of it, then your modem is probable also a router, and these steps listed bellow will probable not work.
Also these steps are so one person, can connect to one computer at your work.
    Open Airport Utility:
    go to the dock
    Click on the finder
    go to the menu bar
    Click on the "Go" menu
Chose "Utilities" from the "Go" Menu
    double Click on "AirPort Utility"
    Access the Base Station:
Double Click on your Airport Extreme BaseStation that is your internet connection router.
a new window should pop up with your Airport Base Station as the Window Name
Configure Static Address for the computer you want to connect to via ARD:
Click on the internet Icon from the toolbar
    Click on the "DHCP" tab
For "DHCP Reservations:"  Click on the "+" button
    For the "Description" put "ARD"
For "Reserve Address by:"  set "DHCP Client ID"
    Click the "Continue" button
For "DHCP Client ID:" set "ARD"
write down the number in "IPv4" address field
    Click the "Done" Button
    Configure routing to ARD computer:
Click on the "Advanced" icon from the tool bar.
Click on the "Port Mapping" tab
    Click on the "+" button
for "Service:" Chose "Apple Remote Desktop"
for "Private IP Address:" copy the exact IP address you wrote down in step "3. 8)"
    Click the "Continue" button
    Click the "Done" button
    Click the "+" button
For the pulldown menu "Service:" Chose "Remote Apple Events"
for "Private IP Address:" copy the exact IP address you wrote down in step "3. 8."
    Click the "Continue" button
    Click the "Done" button
    Click the "+" button
For the pulldown menu "Service:" Chose "Remote Login - SSH"
for "Private IP Address:" copy the exact IP address you wrote down in step "3. 8."
    Click the "Continue" button
    Click the "Done" button
    Click the "Update" button.
wait for the Airport Extreme to update, and for your computer to reconnect to the airport extreme. (make sure you can load and browse websites.)
Configure the ARD computer to use the correct IP address:
Go to the computer you want to be able to remotely connect to
On that computer, Go to the menu bar
    Chose the "Apple" menu bar
    Chose "System Preferences…"
Click on the "Show All" button
    Click on the "Network" icon
For the active network connection, (the connection on the left side with the green dot), click on it
    Clock on the "Advanced…" button
    Click on the "TCP/IP" tab
for the "DHCP Cient ID: field put "ARD".
    Click the "OK" button
Click the "Apply" buttonNOTE: Under "Status" you should see "(connection name) is connected to (airport base station name) and has the IP address (IP address)." the "(IP address)" address displayed should match the IP address you wrote down in step "3. 8."
Find out what your public internet IP address is.
On the computer you wish to connect to over the internet, goto http://whatismyipaddress.com/
when the web page loads, you should see "IP Information:" fallow by a number like 192.168.0.1, write down what ever number it is.
At this point you should be able to connect to the computer remotely
connect to the internet from another location.
    open Apple Remote Desktop
    go to the file menu
chose connect to computer using ip address
set the address to the address to the IP address you wrote down for step 6. 2.
use the same password as you used to connect to the computer at work using ARD.
So here the catch. If your router gets reset... well then your going to have to configure it again. Also all the same rules you have to connect to the computer at work, also apply to connecting to the computer from over the local network. That means your computer need to be on or sleeping. And if it's sleeping it need to be configure to wake for network access.
Also some network connections change.  When it comes to internet connections, some connections are static IP, while other connections are DHCP. If your connection is static... great! if it's DHCP, your address may change. If it dose.. well then your ability to connect will break. And then you'd have to do step 6 & 7 again.
Of corse there are ways around this. But that's kind of another conversation.
Some internet locations may block your ability to connect to your computer at work. This is very common at schools, and companies. Basically any place that tries to control your ability to browse the internet, may block remote access to computers; because a remote computer would completely by pass their web filter.
ALSO there is an easier option. As far as setup. There are programs designed to make remotely accessing your mac as easy as possible. For instance there is LogMeIn or Slack. With both of these programs, it's simple. make sure your computer is always on. Then install the software. Create an account with the service. And then you can connect to the computer almost any where by going to their website.
This option requires no router configuration. It handles DHCP. It's designed to work in as many locations as possible.

  • Can I manage my parents MB from my computer using ARD. Even though they are on different networks

Can I manage my parents MB from my computer using ARD. Even though they are on different networks?>

When you say a diffrent network, do you mean accessing the computer over the internet?
VNC is built into the computer, so you don't need ARD to remote into a computer. To access your parents computer over the internet will most likely require configuring their router/firewall. And unless they're paying for a static ip, you'll also need some way to track their computer.
    OR
you can use logmein, or teamviewer. Both programs are desgined to access a computer over the internet. Most of the time they don't require re-configuring the firewall.

  • Deploying Microsoft Office Preferences using ARD

I've been working on deploying MS Office to a lab of iMacs. Mactopia has a really vague explanation of how to deploy preferences using ARD. I've gone through and created several packages that contain the necessary files and folders, permissions set, etc, but don't know how to run the package each time a new user logs into a machine.
Our machines are bound to AD, running MS Office 2008, 10.6, ARD 3.3 and Faronics DeepFreeze.
I've gone through and configured http://www.entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangesetupv3.html for Entourage as well as collected the necessary files each user will be designated to use.
So my question is, how to I get my MS Office preferences and Microsoft User Data files deployed for each user that logs in? The package files will deploy to ~/Documents and ~/Library/Preferences.
Please help!! I'm going to lose my mind!!

Credit goes to MS for core script (its to long to post here).
Credit goes to the guy who wrote the cleaner script.  Whoever packaged it and didn't build in silent switches gets zero points.
Please note that this will only work for C2R installs of Office 2013.
This is not true.  There are scrub scripts specific to C2R as well as MSI.
I extracted the scrub vbs from O15CTRRemove.diagcab
This is what worked for me.  Use 7-zip to extract the entire package to a directory.  Then run "OffScrub_015msi.vbs all".

  • Using ARD to copy Parental Control Whitelist?

I'm relatively familiar with ARD and use it to manage many aspects of a 50+ mac school. Older students have accounts (and thus Parental Controls) managed by Snow Leopard Server, but each computer also has a local account which is managed by the Parental Controls on the local computer. Unfortunately Parental Controls in Snow Leopard turn out to have a rather disasterous bug which prevents connections to secure sites. This is causing havoc when students try to use the state-mandated testing sites. We of course filter at other levels, but we have to have Parental Controls in place in this account.
All I wish to do is use ARD to copy whichever files are necessary to copy a master "Whitelist" to each of the client computers, but I've had no luck whatsoever figuring out how to do this.
So, let's say "Master" is my master computer and "Clients 1-50" are the rest of the systems. I should be able to go into my "Master" computer admin account, access Parental Controls for my "master copy" of my "localstudent" account, set the whitelist for that account, and then copy the necessary files to every client machine in a few seconds using ARD.
Can anyone please (PLEASE) tell me which files I need to copy?
    Thanks in advance!

I've located a couple threads on this topic here and at other forums, but the solutions are always absurdly complex and cumbersome (and, the ones I've tried returned errors, so no go anyway). Every setting on a computer (other than those few in firmware, such as your Startup Disk preference) have *got* to be in a file of some kind somewhere, and thus should be able to be copied from one computer to another.
Does nobody know where this darn whitelist file is stored?
(I don't need to copy all Parental Control settings, just the whitelist, but I sure don't want to have to add multiple exceptions to 50+ computers just to get around Apple's stupid SSL bug with parental controls.)

  • IPhone 3GS keeps rebooting into iOS 6 screen

My iPhone 3GS (Which is updated to the latest version, and not jailbroken) keeps randomly crashing and then rebooting to a screen that says iOS 6 on the slide to unlock screen, and then when I slide to unlock it shows a connect to iTunes screen. iTunes says it's in recovery mode, but I've recovered it a million times and it still keeps happening. TinyUmbrella says it's not in recovery mode and I can use it to get into recovery mode and then out of it and it works like normal for like 20 minutes and then it crashes again. Does anyone have a fix or a similiar problem?

Here they are, sorry for bad quality, I can only take pictures with my webcam since my phone broke.
When I connect it to iTunes it tells me it's in recovery mode (Which I'm pretty sure it's not, since recovery mode has a black background and TinyUmbrella says it's not)

  • Pushing Out User Account Using ARD

Does anyone know if it is possible to push an entire user account from the administrative computer to a client computer? I am trying to come up with an easy way to create a new user account on 35 student computers in a lab setting. Thanks

    Hi
You should be able to achieve this using the command line? The commands that follow need to be run as root. As an example let's use one of Apple's 'favourite' test users - Howie Doitt.
Create a new entry in the local domain under the category /Users
    dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt
Create and set the shell property
    dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt UserShell /bin/bash
Create and set the user’s full name
dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt RealName "Howie Doitt"
Create and set the user’s ID (assuming only one account?)
    dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt UniqueID 510
Create and set the user’s group ID (the default staff group)
    dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt PrimaryGroupID 20
Create and set the user home directory
    dscl . -create /Users/howiedoitt NFSHomeDirectory /Local/Users/howiedoitt
Set the password - if desired?
    dscl . -passwd /Users/howiedoitt whateverpasswordyouwant
If you would like howiedoitt to be able to perform administrative duties
dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership howiedoitt
Restart the workstation(s) or log out the current user and log in again as the new user for changes to take effect. If there was no home folder created it will be created on successful login with the appropriate POSIX permissions set. You could pre-create the home folder in /Users using the mkdir command making sure you define that folder's name as the created user's shortname.
There are a number of ways of doing the above using ARD. You could do it command by command applied to a selected list of computers. Or combine the whole lot into a script and run the script. You could even schedule when the script can be run.
