Using audio out on Apple TV (3rd gen)
I currently have my 3rd gen Apple TV connected to a TV by HDMI. I would also like to connect the Apple TV by the optical audio out to a set of amplified speakers for streaming music via AirPlay. I've seen lots of posts about similar issues, and I'm seeing the answer I'm hoping for, but I'd just like to confirm before I invest in a cable. Audio will still go thru the HDMI to the TV when we are watching movies but also will go out to the amp when we are streaming music? That is, we don't have to have the amp & speakers on to hear the audio from movies once I connect the optical audio cable?
Thanks!
Robert
I have HDMI to TV and OA to sound bar, both play audio fine and the sound bar works independent of the TV, i.e when it is off, likewise I can play audio on the TV speakers when the bar is off. Mine is 2 Gen ATV but that has not changed with 3rd gen. So yes your plan should work OK.

Using Apple TV (3rd gen) as a remote speaker from original Apple TV (1st gen)
Just got my new Apple TV (3rd gen) - discovered I can't AirPlay to multiple speakers from it like my old Apple TV (1st gen). As a workaround, can I use the old Apple TV just for music, using the new Apple TV as one of its airplay speakers? Can't seem to. The 3rd gen Apple TV doesn't appear on the original apple TVs list of airplay speakers. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks, and thanks for your reply.
Yes, that does work - from iTunes I can see both apple TVs fine as options in the multiple airplay speakers - I was just really hoping to leave the main computer off and play my music from either the original apple tv's hdd or my iphone.
Prior to buying the new 3rd gen Apple TV I had been doing that for a while, using the original Apple TV to airplay music to speakers connected to its own optical out and via airplay to an express in the dining room.
It's odd that I can see both apple TVs and the express from the multiple speakers option from iTunes, but I can only see the express (and itself) from the original apple TV's multiple speakers menu. (Original Apple TV has been updated to latest software.) Maybe it's just too old to know about the new Apple TV.
Has anyone managed to get an original Apple TV to airplay to multiple speakers where one of those speakers is another Apple TV? -
Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps internet connection.
Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps. -
Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update
Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPortTry the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.

2014 Macbook Pro Retina crashes when extending display to Apple TV 3rd Gen
2014 Macbook Pro Retina running Mavericks 10.9.5 crashes and restarts every time I Extend Desktop in Airplay to new Apple TV 3rd Gen running latest update.
What can I do to avoid this?

JonHello Freytag,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Pro was getting recurring kernel panics when using an external display.
First, I recommend troubleshooting the connection with the external display. This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to the internal display. I recommend reviewing the section titled "No video or no signal, image distortion, 'snow,' or flickering" in the article below. I recommend reviewing the full article, but the following steps specifically stands out to me for the situation you are experiencing:
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
You can find the full article here:

If you continue expereince kernel panics, I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" in the article below to help isolate and troubleshoot this issue:

Netflix Streaming Nightmare on Apple TV 3rd Gen.
Hello all,
Within these forums I have yet to see my specific problem regarding netflix, so I am turning to you for help. -
Recently I switched out my Roku XS (Very happy with the performance of this streaming unit) for the Apple TV 3rd Gen. in the master bedroom--Roku XS went to guest room. After having had no problems with streaming content in HD over WiFi to my Roku, I began to notice that Netflix would simply stop playing after roughly 4 minutes and stop playback. I had not lost connectivity, there was no buffering prompt, and the Netflix app would not resume playback- It simply dropped out to the movie menu. Reinitiating the movie would start it from the beginning. Hulu plus does not share the problem, nor does Itunes playback. So, this is a netflix specific problem and I refuse to acknowledge any issues pertaining to my wifi because speed tests, and the previous box, show that it is VERY strong (also holds full signal as shown on the Apple tv settings). Has anyone found a fix for this particular problem yet? I am open to all suggestions, but leave any preconceived notions of me being tech ignorant out, I'm not.

Mine is a new MacBook Air and new Apple TV 3rd Gen, however whenever I try to play videos from my Mac Air, the videos are choppy. My internet connection is 8MBPS and both my devices connect on the Ethernet, not cabled. Please help as the Apple TV doesnt play Youtube videos either.

If you use a FireWire audio interface, disconnect it and test again. -
I would like to connect my Apple TV 3rd gen to a projector and not an HD TV (so I can watch movies on the big screen). Are there any decent price compatible projectors? Good quality but not professional! Many thanks
Thank you for the answer, I suppose the main thrust of my enquiry is to find out if 65 MBits is my ATV theoretical limit of reception. If that is the case then I am happy as a Pig in Mud
I may have allowed myself to become a victim by listening to Fanbois posting elsewhere who always seem to go one better than everyone else. Now I have learnt two things Today; 65Mbit/s = Good enough and only read the apple forums.
Many Thanks

Can't Login to YouTube on Apple TV (3rd Gen) (YT and Gmail merged)
So, I am unable to log in to my YouTube account on my Apple TV (3rd Gen). I have read a lot of suggestions and nothing has helped. In like 2006 I got my YouTube User Name, then in like 2009 I got my Gmail. Google bought YouTube, they merged so I have a YouTube UN and Gmail Account. I've tried logging in with each. I've tried using the the 2-step verification, and application specific password. But to no avail, not working. Im getting either this Username can't be used on this device for the gmail account log in info. And unable to login with this Username/password for YouTube UN.
Anyone have any suggestions! This is really frustrating!
Thanks BradI had problems back way back in the day with my gmail login so I made a new one (youtube user) for test and that worked fine

my iphone 4s wont connect in apple tv 3rd gen dont show the airplay icon, but apple tv can connect in Bose sound touch 20 via airplay, and the iphone also connect to sound touch 20 via airplay, ive just buy it yesterday in Mediamarkt Spain,, so it means theres something wrong between my iphone and the apple tv? please me
Hi jaredfox06,
If I understand the issue correctly, you have recently purchased a used iPhone and you do not see your Apple TV in the control center in order to AirPlay. To troubleshoot this issue please follow the steps outlined below.
Try these steps first
Make sure that you have the latest software on your iOS device and Apple TV.
Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi turned on.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
On your Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Network.
If you're trying to use peer-to-peer AirPlay, make sure that both devices have Bluetooth turned on.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
On your Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Bluetooth.
If you don't see AirPlay in Control Center
When an AirPlay-enabled device is available, you'll see AirPlay in Control Center on your iOS device.
If you don't, try these steps:
Restart your iOS device and Apple TV.
Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
On your Apple TV, go to Settings > General > Network. If your Apple TV is connected using Ethernet, make sure that it’s plugged in to the router you're using for Wi-Fi.
On your Apple TV, make sure that AirPlay is turned on. Go to Settings > AirPlay.

When watching my Apple TV (3rd gen) the picture jumps a few frames every few seconds, this happens when I rent a film or play back from my new Mac Pro, my Wifi is the Airport Express.
These may be different issues, but lets look at rentals first.
Poor motion can result from mismatched output. If your source is 24 or 30 fps you should set the output of the Apple TV to 60 Hz, for 25 fps content use 50 Hz.
Additionally motion software on the TV itself can cause the picture to jump, check your TV settings and turn off any motion settings in use, -

HT1600 Apple TV 3rd Gen Netflix issues
We have recently purchased an apple TV 3rd gen and Netflix worked for about a week and has not since. All updates are in.... can anyone suggest what needs to be done? We bought it for Netflix and not any better than the WD or Boxee we tried....so far.
Just found this:

I will consider myself lucky that it didn't update yet. I will just wait patiently till the bugs are worked out.
