Using Forte Free Agent newsreader

Purchased my iMac 27" about a week ago but just opened this morning. All has gone well until I tried using Forte Free Agent newsreader. The program worked fine on my Dell laptop, but on the iMac the executable file is listed as a document. When I try to run it it opens as a sort of text file. Is there a different way to use this program, or is it simply not capable of running on the Apple OS?
Thanks!

I've heard a little about Parallel but nothing about Crossover and Bootcamp. What criteria would you recommend to help me decide which is the best choice? I use Forte Free Agent but it's not an essential item. I use MS Office 2003 quite a bit, especially Outlook, Excel and Word and so I'd like to be able to continue that. I've already begun looking at MS Office for Mac.
One suggestion I got was partitioning the hard drive and installing Windows 7 so that I could run all those apps that are supported by Windows and MS, but not Apple. Does that make sense?
IMHO it would be foolish to install MS Windows on your iMac for only MS Office duties for several reasons. First you if feel you have to have MS Office in order to be compatible with your co-workers then you will find MS Office 11 a very capable product. However if you have been using MS Office out of habit then iWork is a an extremely capable product line. Your iMac already has Mail, Address Book, and iCal which integrate beautifully together and replace Outlook and are robust products. In addition the iWork and iLife applications integrate very well together. And iWork documents can be shared with MS Office users. MS Office 11 is also a very capable product but for most people it's overkill.
While you could run MS Windows on your Mac from what I can tell from your needs it's a waste of money, time and resources. Your iMac has Boot Camp built into it, Boot Camp allows you to turn your Mac into a machine that runs 2 operating systems, MS Windows and OS X. However if you take this route when you install Win 7 (which you would have to purchase unless you already own a license) that part of your Mac is susceptible to all the maladies (viruses and malware, funky drivers, etc...) you were probably trying to get away from. Also if you use Boot Camp you are running either Windows or OS X but you can't run them simultaneously. If you were a gamer or someone that has to have Windows only applications or were doing 3D CAD/CAM work then Boot Camp would be a good solution. However for MS Office duties it's a total waste!
You could also use virtualization software like Parallels or Fusion or other alternatives. If you insist on running Win 7 on your iMac then for your needs this would be the route I'd recommend. However again whenever you run Windows you are susceptible to viruses and other malware. The reason being is you can run Windows and OS X side by side. When I switched to a Mac several years ago I did this and ran MS Office apps which I quickly weaned off of, I happened to use Fusion as my virtualization tool and found the performance good. However after I began using Mail, Address Book, iCal and iWork I found out how clunky, old fashioned and well to be blunt crappy MS Office really is so I abandoned Office! While i still have Fusion and Windows loaded on my machine I don't recall the last time it was used.
My recommendation is spend more time with those links and learn how powerful your machine is the way it shipped. Play with the tools it already has (Mail, Address Book, iCal) and I think you may be not surprised but shocked how capable and easy to use they are. Macs aren't like PCs, what I mean by that is PC's come loaded with lots of useless software that is simply awful. However Macs come with extremely robust software which includes iLife (Garage Band, iMovie, iWeb) and Mail, Address Book, iCal. If you decide to take a look at iWork ($79 retail but easily found for much less) that includes Numbers (Excel replacement), Pages (Word replacement) and Keynote (PowerPoint replacement.)

This article has a link for more information on finding your profile directory: [[Fix the "Could not initialize the application's security component" error message]]. On Windows 7, you can try this (either in a Windows Explorer window address bar or from the start menu search box):
    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
You may see one folder in there and that's the one you want. If you see more than one, look for the one with the most recently modified files.

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

10.7.4 is not Snow Leopard.    10.7.4 is Lion.
Also, is the drive connected via USB or Firewire?
If USB are there other devices on the USB bus?

    Hi,
The easiest way to send e-mail from Forte is using ExternalConnection class
    - no "C" wrappering required. Simply, just use SMTP. It is very easy to
implement and because it could be written in Forte you get all the
    advantages that come with it.
On Forte -users list look for mail that I send a few weeks ago about SMTP
    email client.
If you can not fidnd it let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB fit in MacBook Pro 2010 13?

Is that Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB fit in MBP 2010 13.
I want to take out hdd from Seagate free agent go flex from it's casing and put in MBP.
Its that possible? what height of actual size Seagate Free agent Go Flex 1TB HDD?

You would be a whole lot smarter just to buy a 1TB bare drive with a height of 12.5mm or less, install it in your MBP, and keep the external GoFlex drive intact to use for backup.

  • Seagate Free Agent Pro 750/Leopard Incompatible?

I have been trying to use a Seagate Free Agent Pro 750 (purchased off the shelf at Costco) as a Time Machine backup drive. Leopard is unable to format this disk as anything other than FAT32 (which cannot be used for Time Machine). I spent about 2 hours on the phone with Seagate tech support, and finally returned the drive. I got another, duplicate unit, and repeated the experience (except this time I used Seagate's online chat tech support instead of the phone). I tried this with 4 different machines (2 G4 12"s, a Macbook and a Macbook Pro), and with both the firewire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces (the Free Agent has a replaceable interface module that I switched out to try both ways).
Is this a known incompatibility? Anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
I have the exact same hard drive that I bought at Costco and think I experienced the same error as you did. You probably got some file formatter error using disk utility? This issue is known and there is an easy workaround. Here is the Gizmodo link to the solution:

Please let us know if this solves the problem you are experiencing. The solve involved creating 2 partitions, reformatting, then combining the partitions again.

airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Your external drive compatibility depends on the file format it uses.
You won't have any problem reading your external drive because exFAT, FAT32 and NTFS are compatible with OS X. However, if your external drive is formatted with NTFS, you won't be able to write in it. You will notice it when you try to copy data to your external drive from the iMac. If that happens, you have two options:
    1. Use a third-party application like Parallels NTFS.
    2. Format the external drive with exFAT or FAT32. You have to do this in a PC. Copy your data to the internal disk of your computer before formatting the external disk.
If the external disk is formatted in FAT32 or exFAT, your external disk will work correctly

  • Free agent drive installation help

When I try to reformat my external free agent drive I get an error message saying that it quit unexpectedly. Anyone know the problem?
I can't use my drive until it is reformatted.

That's not how you format the drive. Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
