Using HD Footage in SD Project

I have an old SD project for a set of video instructions that needs to be updated. Most of the old SD footage is still good, but I do need to reshoot a few scenes at the moment. I'd like to shoot the new stuff in HD and mix it in with the old SD footage. Eventually the whole thing will need to be redone in HD, and I'd like to begin accumulating HD foootage now.
The SD footage was shot about 5 years ago with a cheap camcorder, but looks pretty good. I've experimented with a new JVC Everio 1080i camcorder that shoots crystal clear video to hard disk in AVHCD format. Whenever I view the AVHCD files the quality is great. I experimented bringing in those files into my SD project. I set the magnification so that I will keep all of the vertical resolution and lose a bit on the sides when the 16:9 video is reduced to 4:3. The video was shot so all of the action was in the middle of the frame, so I can afford to lose the sides. Since I'm reducing 1080 lines of vertical resolution to 480, I expected to have at least SD quality as a result.
When I rendered the video, I was very surprised to see that the new HD video looks *much worse* than the old SD video. It seems that CS4 cannot de-interlace video very well. The video from the HD source are incredibly bad in quality, and the video from the cheap, 5 year old SD camcorder look great.
I originally did these videos in Premiere Pro 1.5 and had a very easy time of it. Premiere CS4 has so far been a real disapointment. The resulting video is of very poor quality and the program crashes quite a bit, which was never a problem with 1.5.

I've got a couple of tutorials on my web site that deal with scaling HD footage down to SD resolution.  One is about an all-CS4 workflow.  Here's a link:

  • Use recaptured footage in an old project, how?

    Hi everyone,
I am in a it of a weird situation. Years ago, I filmed and edited some silly stuff with my friends, using Premiere Pro 1.5 and a Digital 8 camera. I would really like to edit that project again, and I have since lost the footage from my computer, but kept the Premiere project which I have managed to find again. Since I have to recapture the footage from the tapes onto my computer, I was wondering if there was some smart way of putting the recaptured footage into the project in the correct places.
I tried using "Link Media", which seemed to work somewhat, but since I think the length of the avi file is longer or something, the whole thing is off cue.
Is there some easy way to align the footage so it matches correctly again?
    Kind Regards,
    Gustav Lassen

I tried this a while back and re captured the footage from the same tape making it roughly the same position, length and the same filename of course. I was hoping that PP would match the timecodes and sync it all in - but alas no. It was all displaced and PP seemed to have applied a new timecode to the re-imported footage. I gave up so would also be interested in Jim's expansion

  • How can I use footage from one project in another?

The best format for saving your video from one project so that it can be used in another Premiere Elements project is DV-AVI. For hi-def video, the format is HDV.
To save your video as a standard-definition DV-AVI, go to Share, Personal Computer and select the AVI output option with the DV preset. When you're ready to mix together these segments open a new project using the DV settings and assemble them on that timeline.
To save your video as a high-definition M2T video, go to Share,  Personal Computer and select the MPEG output option with the 1440x1080 MPEG preset. When you're ready  to mix together these segments open a new project using the HDV settings  and assemble them on that timeline.

  • I have recently received a project from someone who has already captured the footage, can I use the footage directly from the capture scratch for my new project?

Will this in any way effect my footage when working/exporting? I will be working off the same hard drive.

If all the footage played in FC to begin with and all the media is included in the capture scratch folder you should be good to go but I would check a few things.
Pull the new footage into your project and look under the compressor column. If any files are H264 or MP4 I would recommend converting these to a PR422 or another FC friendly format.  Also confirm any audio only files are aiff/48Khz(not mp3 or 44.1Khz).
In my experience you can work with H264,MP4, mp3 & 44.1 in FC7 but you are almost guaranteed to have problems later.

  • Capturing lots of footage for multiple projects?

I've got 50+ DV tapes with years worth of footage that I want to transfer to my hard disk so that I can eventually make some movies. Do I have to capture to a project in FC4? I want to transfer all the video and then pick out clips for projects as I need them. (Something like the clip browser in iMovie, but I can't stand editing in the new iMovie). My first thought was to create a single project and capture all my video there. Then when I work on a project I can just use clips from the "capture" project. Any thoughts on this approach?

I capture all my tapes in FCE and then copy the clip files from Capture Scratch to folders on an external FW drive that is my 'video store'. (Among other things, it simplifies backing up all my source media clips.) After copying the clip files to the external drive, I delete them from Capture Scratch and I do not keep the FCE project(s) in which I capture the tapes.
To help keep the clip files organized, I do this:
    • give each tape a unique reel number and name at the time of the shoot
    • assign the reel number & name in FCE when I capture
    • store related clip files in a folder with an appropriate name (for example, if I have 4 reels from a single shoot, I keep them together in a single folder)
    • keep a log of each tape in an Excel workbook
When I start a real project, I can import any/all of the clip files from my external drive for any project.

  • Workaround? - Using Interpret Footage AME renders active content only for original movie length

I submitted a bug on this behavior, but I am hoping that someone has found a workaround or maybe I am just using Interpret Footage incorrectly.
    Here is the problem:
    1. Import 20 second long 23.976fps source file into AME
    2. Right-click item in Queue and choose Interpret Footage
    3. Choose "Assume this frame rate:" and set to 18fps - Duration will update as expected to 0:00:26;19
    Results:
Output file will have correctly re-timed active content up to 0:00:20;00 and then hold that frame (which correctly corresponds to 0:00:15;00 from the source file) to the end of the file at 0:00:26;18
    Expected results:
Output file should contain the full content of the source file re-timed for the new duration.
NOTE: This behavior will also be apparent in the Export settings Preview window prior to encoding.
    Mac OSX 10.7.5
    AME: 6.0.2.81 (64-bit)

We are actually generating the files ourselves and keeping them 23.976fps (or 25fps for PAL-country clients). We're interpreting the incoming 23.976fps file as 18fps because that is the speed at which it was shot. Super-8 sound film like most other sound film was 'supposed' to be shot / projected at 24fps, but many shooters used 18fps to get more time out of a 50-foot camera load. Our company provides 24p (or 25p) files to clients, and in addition to providing 1 to 1 representations of their film at 23.976fps, we also provide 24p files with duplicate frames inserted so they are easy to work with in NLEs, yet approximate the correct motion for material that was shot at 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 fps. Our Apple Compressor workflow works great for the 90+% of material that is silent or is sound film shot at 24fps. We would experiment with moving the entire speed-correction workflow to AME if it solved the 18in24 sound problem, and it _almost_ does. The behavior I described is obviously a bug and not 'works as intended' - it will then be a question of whether such an outside use case gets any attention. If I can come up with another use case that would be more popular, then I might get more visibility for the bug. I suppose that some may wish to batch out 24p files from 25p files using the same technique. That is, throw a pile of 25p files into AME, interpret them as 23.976 and write them out to 24p files. I would expect that the last 4% of those files would show a freeze frame...

So you can ping and nslookup from your ms to these agents and vice versa right?  I wouldn't do a manual install, I would push the agent from the management server.  You can uninstall the agent manually, or use cleanmom to get rid of them.  Then
do an install from the console.  When you initiate the install from the console (management server), should it run into any issues it will dump out an error which will give you an idea of where the problem may be.

  • Using 24p footage and 60i footage together?

    Hello,
I am working on a project that will combine 24p footage and 60i footage. What would be the best way to go about combining these two. It's for a short that is shot similar to Cloverfield. I want to use 60i footage for the hand held footage shoot by the actors who are capturing their experience. I'd prefer to have that footage shot on 24p as well and degrade the quality in post, but I don't want to run the risk of them dropping my DVX100a and destroying it. I don't have any experience with 60i, or combining two kinds of footage, so advice is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

    > that they are not true 30p but really 60i rendered to 30p
Well, I certainly can't speak for all of these cameras, but I have played around with some of this "30p over 60i" footage -- but most of this was from HDV cameras, not AVCHD. Avoid if you can. Basically, the luma is progressive and the chroma is interlaced.
I have a function (it's actually part of the dv2film and hd2sd functions) that will deinterlace only the chroma, so can recover greatly true progressive output... but this is an unmitigated a pain in the *** to deal with all the time, and you certainly lose at least a little chroma resolution. Avoid :)

  • 4k footage in 1080p project for SmoothCam

    Guys,
I have a 4k footage 2:1 (4096x2048) which I want to use SmoothCam to smooth out some bumps. The project setting is 1080p HD. The reason for using 4k in a 1080p project is that I have a big enough picture space for SmoothCam to do rotation and translation(my final product would be BlueRay). Now the problem I'm having is that the 4K image seems to rescale and fit to the monitor window. I was hoping to have full size 4K image in 1080p monitor with much area go over the border so I can see how much I can scale down after SmoothCam has been applied.
Does anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks.
    Shaun

I found that I can make Video Motion scale to 100% instead of default fit to screen 43%. Answered my own question. Thanks!

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

  • How can I use a module of another project?

    Hi
I am using Visual studio 2013.
I have a solution with 2 projects (console application).  In the first one there is a module that I want to use it in the other project (without compliantly recreate it in the second one, otherwise what is the benefit to have several projects in one

    MacBook, iMovie 9.0.4

    Hi
You can do this - by not doing it the way You describe as it will not work.
    a. the external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO (iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut doesn't matter)
    b. Do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder - at all
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done within the iMovie Application - then connections will not break.
(move them back and see if iMovie remembers them - then do move as described above)

  • 7.2.1: Can't add any new Footage to existing Project (PC)

After updating to 7.2.1 and adding new Footage to a project, the project gets unusable. The whole project plays no sound any more. After pressing "SPACE" to play the clips I only hear a strange cracking sound and then silence.
    Anyone else with this behaviour?

If you haven't already  cleared the cache files, I'd try that. To do so, delete all the contents of the "Media Cache" and "Media Cache Files" folders here:
    Mac: /Users/<USERNAME>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
Windows: c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common. You should find two cache folders there. (If you can't find the AppData folder, you'll have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files.)
